Walter Daniel John Tull (28 April 1888 - 25 March 1918) was the first black officer in the British Army, and the second black player in the top division of the Football League. Tribute to a fallen second world war hero - Walter Nock

Here is a small amateur tribute to a fallen soldier. Private Walter Nock was 19 years of age when he died in battle on 10th June 1940. Walter was in the East Surrey Regiment, 2/6th battalion. He was originally buried where he fell, but the villagers of Criquiers in the department of Haute-Normandie, Seine-Maritime agreed to have him buried in the Criquiers Communal Cemetery. Since then the Commonwealth War Graves Commission have adopted the grave. It is the only war grave in the cemetery and the plot was donated by a local family for which Walters family will be eternally grateful. Walter was the brother of my fiance's mother, Sylvia. The son of Walter and Alice Nock of Roehampton, London. Walter and his fallen colleagues were heroes and must never be forgotten. I am in his debt as are the rest of us. May he rest in peace for ever.
