Korean family reunions suspended
The cancellation of a reunion for families separated by the Korean War has dealt a devastating blow to elderly Koreans.
After a long selection process, 96 South Koreans had been set to travel to the North's Mount Kumgang resort this week for a gathering with family members they have not seen for 60 years.
It would have been the first mass reunion in three years, but with just days to go, North Korea postponed the event, blaming "hostility" from South Korea.
Al Jazeera's Harry Fawcett reports from Seoul, South Korea.

Renowned Korean ovelist Choi In-ho has passed away after a long battle against cancer.
Choi wrote a number of bestsellers starting in the 1970s, with many of them used as the basis for a number of popular Korean movies and TV dramas.
Our Sohn Jung-in reports. Renowned novelist Choi In-ho died on Wednesday after a long battle with cancer.
This year is the 50th anniversary of the start of Choi's career, which is marked by his winning a literary contest at the age of 18.
The 68-year-old writer is known for critically acclaimed novels such as "Another Man's Room" and "Heavenly Homecoming to Stars," and continued to write even after being diagnosed with salivary gland cancer in 2008.
Friends and colleagues paid their respects to Choi at a memorial service in Seoul on the night of his passing.
"I once sat on the jury of a literary competition with Choi In-ho. It lasted an entire day and it was a very agonizing job. When I told him how I was feeling, he gave me a hug and cheered me up."
The novelist reached into the souls of contemporary readers with a range of works spanning the genres of fiction, historical fiction, essays and even children's books.
Many people remember him for the television shows and films inspired by his works, including the historical novel "Sangdo," which became a huge success after being made into a TV series of the same name, and the novel "Deep Blue Night," which was made into a movie.
"Choi was very interested in movies as well. He played a very important role in the Korean film industry, especially in the 70s and 80s when he wrote many books that were made into movies."
A Catholic mass for Choi will be held at the Myeongdong Cathedral in central Seoul on Saturday.
He will be buried at Bundang Memorial Park in Gyeonggi Province.

Korea is home to the KTX, one of the world's most modern and fastest train services in the world, but sometimes people prefer to take it a little slower and take the train for fun.
Some specially designed trains and train routes have been developed to let travelers see the country in comfort and at a leisurely pace.
Our Song Ji-sun jumped onboard for us, and sends this report. Don't expect a typical train ride -- because what you'll see or sit on won't be like anything you've tried before.
From the locomotive that resembles Korea's Geobukseon -- or Turtle Ship each passenger carriage is decorated according to different themes.
You can enjoy a traditional tea ceremony on board sitting on the floor.
"It's really amazing that we can have tea ceremony on a train sitting down The tea seemed to taste even better, and the whole experience is very new and just great."
Take a walk around the street of memories here at Deukryang station.
This 'Lucky Cafe' is just one of the dozen stores that have maintained their original eighties facade.
Cafe owner Choi Su-ra is overjoyed about having this new tourist train running through her town.
"My son would tell me not to renovate the cafe and keep it as it is.
I'm thrilled that our small town will be bustling with young people now the train is running."
These regional tourist trains are expected to stimulate balanced growth within the nation -- especially in underdeveloped rural areas.
"We are anticipating 500-thousand passengers over the next five years on this route.
As our train passes through small-sized way stations in mostly agricultural towns we expect the S-train to boost the local economy and help local farmers boost their incomes."
The S-Train is the second of five-regional train routes designed to accentuate the characteristics of each region.
In addition to the S-train that'll be open to public on Friday the overall economic impact of the five railway tourism belts is anticipated at some 1-point-4 billion U.S. dollars in extra production.

For thousands of years, Korean cuisine has centered on a table of rice and side dishes made of grains and vegetables. Arirang TV's "Tales of Hansik" introduces the secrets of Korean cuisine, now attracting global attention as healthy slow food.
In the "Jeon" episode, we talk about Korean-style pancakes, or jeon, which is an all-time favorite on rainy days. We talk about the image that Koreans have about jeon, and the kinds of jeon that are enjoyed with regular meals, at celebrations, and alongside alcoholic drinks.
Joen is made with a variety of ingredients, including vegetables, meat, and fish, but the most common type of jeon is pajeon (green onion jeon). We visit the Dongnae Halmae Pajeon restaurant to learn about the history of Dongnae pajeon and the reason that Koreans have looked to jeon all these years in times of joy and sorrow.
We explore the customs associated with jeon and what it symbolizes in Korea. We look at the formation of jeon restaurants and the jeon alley in Mapo.
Jeon culture - including the history and misunderstandings about bindaetteok and the process through which it became a food for the common people; the buckwheat jeon in Gangwon Province; the jangtteok of Chungcheong and Gangwon Provinces; and modern forms of jeon ?gives us a glimpse of the lives of Koreans.
- We track the history of Korean cuisine by comparing the traditional jeon made in Dudeul Village for over two millennia with the modern jeon. We also join a family as they prepare food for the New Year's celebrations and stop by jeon restaurants to see the ambience that jeon creates as well as its healing powers.

http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=arirangkoreanThe Korean table has been made up of bap and side dishes for thousands of years. On Arirang TV's "Tales of Hansik," we introduce thirteen stories of hansik, which has become a symbol of healthful, slow food.
On the "bap" episode, we talk about the significance the staple food in Korea. Learn about the meaning of bap eaten on a baby's first birthday, the basic Korean table set with bap, soup, and kimchi, and the types of bap that are commonly enjoyed in Korea today.
Excavations of carbonized rice grains and pots called siru suggest that Koreans have prepared and eaten bap since the fourth century B.C. With the advent of cauldrons in A.D. 20, bap was boiled, steamed, and burned to become the bap we know today.
We explore the process of creating traditional Korean pots, as well as the meticulous process of cooking rice in these pots, to see how bap has kept its place at the center of Korean food culture for so many years.
- By analyzing white bap and mixed-grain bap, their nutritional content, and the various kinds of bap that have appeared over the years, we find out how Koreans maintain their energy and health. We also learn why Koreans are eating less bap than before, and why they prefer mixed-grain bap to white rice bap.
- Bap is present in every stage of a Korean person's life, from birth to death, and even after death. It is also a medium for strengthening the communal culture. By exploring these traditions, we determine the significance of bap in Korean culture.

Improving North Korean Human Rights
The UN has established Commission of Inquiry(COI) at the beginning of this year and COI has visited Korea last August to do the research on the actual conditions.
On today's [AFTER 10], we are joined by a North Korean human rights activist to discuss what kind of efforts are needed from the international community to improve North Korean human rights.

The 18 minute "Connecting" documentary is an exploration of the future of Interaction Design and User Experience from some of the industry's thought leaders. As the role of software is catapulting forward, Interaction Design is seen to be not only increasing in importance dramatically, but also expected to play a leading role in shaping the coming "Internet of things." Korean High School (Documentary Preview)
In sixty short years, South Korea went from being one of the poorest countries in Asia to having the world's 13th largest economy. Korean students have some of the highest test scores in the world, and a higher rate of acceptance into American Ivy Leagues than any other foreign country. But Korea also leads the world in two not quite so stunning ways- the highest rate of plastic surgery per capita, and a higher suicide rate than any other developed nation.
So. What's life like for a Korean student? In one of the most competitive societies in the world, how does one find their place? What does it take to achieve your aspirations and goals? Our documentary will take a look at the lives of five Korean teenagers on the verge of either reaching- or losing- their dreams. The film will follow the students during the most stressful time of their lives- their last year of high school. After studying for roughly sixteen hours each day, their futures boil down to one last exam. On November 10th, 2011, thousands of high school seniors will take a nine hour test that for many, will determine their economic and social status for the rest of their lives.

An Audio-Visual collaboration between Drasko V, AudioAndroid, Yoko K Yongsub Song and Yongchan Kim -presenting the idea of Singularity.
Machine's road towards singularity. Exponential growth in technology. Radical changes in our society. Expectance and acceptance of technology. The existential threat is yet to be felt, as even a simple smile cannot contain the energy and feel humans possess.
판 is an episode in which something occurs or is played. The mask of the machine is used in Korean traditional folk play. In the animation, the machine plays 판 for singularity.

Two Weeks (투윅스 ) Starring Lee Joon Ki and Park Ha Sun
The aimless and indifferent Jang Tae San (Lee Joon Ki) never had much going for himself, but the worst-case scenario just happened: Tae San is shaken back into life when he's not only wrongly accused of murder, but also discovers he has an illegitimate child—a young daughter stricken with leukemia. As the desperate days unfold, Tae San must save his dying daughter and find a way to clear his name. But for a man who's never lived with purpose, will it be possible for him to make his time count in these crucial moments? Life may not always give second chances, but it's given Tae San two weeks.

North Korean Camps - North Korea
November 2008
The only escapee of North Koreas most brutal prison camp has lived to tell us a story of unspeakable horror. Starved of food and common humanity, Shin proves that gulags are still a tragic reality.
We were always hungry. Shins most vivid memory of his life in the camp is the constant hunger he felt, food made me escape, even if it was going to cost me my life. The only thing that interested me was the food. Before his escape three years ago, he didnt even know that a world existed beyond the barbed wires. Until then, his life had been one of torture, hard labour and complete isolation. My mother was supposed to inform on me and me on her. He believed she deserved her fate as he witnessed her execution. I blamed her. I had no real feelings as a kid. Shin didnt know love, only violence. Once the guards beat a little girl on the head so hard, she died the next day. He eventually escaped through a gap in a high-voltage fence. His charred legs still bear the scars. As horrible as it is, Shins story is not unique. Wang, himself a former prisoner, is a prominent writer on the subject. He believes that oppression in North Korea will keep increasing: The brutality of the system has grown to the point where Kim Jong Il now fears that he will suffer the same fate as Caucescu of Romania. He simply wants to kill all his enemies.
