Mosquito Lagoon is located in the northern part of the Indian River Lagoon system and the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. It extends from Ponce de León Inlet in Volusia County, Florida, to the north end of Merritt Island, and connects to the Indian River via the Haulover Canal. The Lagoon divides the city of New Smyrna Beach. It also runs next to the Canaveral National Seashore on Cape Canaveral and the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. The Kennedy Space Center is located on the lagoon as well.
Mosquito Lagoon is an acclaimed red drum fishing habitat and a well-known destination for birdwatchers and nature tours.
The Nature Conservancy is coordinating an oyster restoration project, developed by the University of Central Florida. The goal is to restore about 40 acres (160,000 m2) of oyster reef habitat within the Canaveral National Seashore.the Nature Conservancy - Indian River Lagoon
Winter, the bottlenose dolphin notable for her prosthetic tail (whose story was featured in the film Dolphin Tale was rescued from Mosquito Lagoon in December 2005. She plays herself again in the sequel, Dolphin Tale 2 to join with another dolphin named Hope.
A lagoon is a shallow body of water separated from a larger body of water by barrier islands or reefs. Lagoons are commonly divided into coastal lagoons and atoll lagoons. They have also been identified as occurring on mixed-sand and gravel coastlines. There is an overlap between bodies of water classified as coastal lagoons and bodies of water classified as estuaries. Lagoons are common coastal features around the world.
Lagoons are shallow, often elongated bodies of water separated from a larger body of water by a shallow or exposed shoal, coral reef, or similar feature. Some authorities (such as Nybakken) include fresh water bodies in the definition of "lagoon", while others explicitly restrict "lagoon" to bodies of water with some degree of salinity. The distinction between "lagoon" and "estuary" also varies between authorities. Richard A. Davis Jr. restricts "lagoon" to bodies of water with little or no fresh water inflow, and little or no tidal flow, and calls any bay that receives a regular flow of fresh water an "estuary". Davis does state that the terms "lagoon" and "estuary" are "often loosely applied, even in scientific literature." Kusky characterizes lagoons as normally being elongated parallel to the coast, while estuaries are usually drowned river valleys, elongated perpendicular to the coast. When used within the context of a distinctive portion of coral reef ecosystems, the term "lagoon" is synonymous with the term "back reef" or "backreef", which is more commonly used by coral reef scientists to refer to the same area. Coastal lagoons are classified as inland bodies of water.
Mosquitoes are small, midge-like flies which comprise the family Culicidae. Females of most species are ectoparasites, whose tube-like mouthparts (called a proboscis) pierce the hosts' skin to consume blood. The word "mosquito" (formed by mosca and diminutive ito) is Spanish for "little fly". Thousands of species feed on the blood of various kinds of hosts, mainly vertebrates, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and even some kinds of fish. Some mosquitoes also attack invertebrates, mainly arthropods. Though the loss of blood is seldom of any importance to the victim, the saliva of the mosquito often causes an irritating rash that is a serious nuisance. Much more serious though, are the roles of many species of mosquitoes as vectors of diseases. In passing from host to host, some transmit extremely harmful infections such as malaria, yellow fever, Chikungunya, west Nile virus, dengue fever, filariasis, Zika virus and other arboviruses, rendering it the deadliest animal family in the world.
First trip of 2017 and it's back to Mosquito Lagoon. With the water really beginning to clear up and with all the fish I was seeing the last couple trips, I decided this would be a good time to fulfill my promise of filming more of my fly fishing. I went in with the idea of targeting gator trout with a popper and the results did not disappoint!
Yet another great day on the waters of Mosquito Lagoon. This time it was the sight-fishing that made the trip and we had multiple shots at several quality redfish and some monster trout. The big trout didn’t cooperate however, but the redfish did, including another overslot for yours truly.
First trip back to Mosquito Lagoon since Hurricane Matthew devastated the coast. Due to forecasted high winds and closures of many southern boat ramps, I launched and fished the northern Lagoon for the first time in months. Fishing was so so, but water clarity did seem better. I would have liked more fish, less rain and fewer boats to deal with, but it was what it was...
Although not traditionally thought of as part of Mosquito Lagoon, the North Indian River Lagoon has been one of my long time favorites at certain times of the year. So, this trip I headed to Scottsmoor Landing, a tiny, single lane ramp that is often so shallow that anything more than an 8-10" draft can't even navigate the channel. It's a fun area, known for big schools of black drum, but it's definitely hit or miss. There are very few "in between" days, as it's usually either very good or very bad. It's been close to a year since I've been there though, and I'm sad to report the water quality is awful. Far worse than the eastern estuary. Still, the bite was pretty good and I'm glad I went.

Smithsonian Marine Station Director Dr. Valerie Paul and postdoctoral fellows Chris Freeman and Eve Galimany are the presenters in this informative presentation. The Smithsonian Marine Station (SMS) has maintained an active research program on the biodiversity and ecology of the Indian River Lagoon for over 40 years. In 2011, the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) had a very dense and prolonged bloom of phytoplankton that caused many negative effects including loss of seagrasses. Since early 2014, SMS researchers have joined other Florida scientists and the St. Johns River Water Management District in the IRL-Algal Blooms Investigation to study the northern IRL system. In addition to monitoring biodiversity and functional groups of invertebrates that feed on phytoplankton throughout the northern ...
