The College of Saint Elizabeth (CSE) is a private Roman Catholic, four-year, liberal arts college. It is located in an unincorporated community called Convent Station, in Morris Township, Morris County, New Jersey, United States. A large portion of the college's campus extends into the neighboring municipality of Florham Park.
There are about 500 part-time undergraduate, 650 full-time undergraduate, and 300 graduate students. About 50 men attend the college part-time. As of the 2004-2005 academic year, 1,976 total students were enrolled, with 668 in the Women's College. As of the 2016-17 school year, the college will become co-educational.
The college was founded in 1899 by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth and is the oldest women's college in New Jersey and one of the first Catholic colleges in the United States to award degrees to women. It is named for Elizabeth Ann Seton (1774–1821), who founded the Sisters of Charity and who, after her death, was canonized as the United States' first native-born saint. (Seton Hall University in New Jersey and Seton Hill University in Pennsylvania are also named after Elizabeth Ann Seton.)
Saint Elizabeth may refer to Elizabeth (Biblical figure), the mother of John the Baptist
Saint Elizabeth may also refer to:
College (Latin: collegium) is an educational institution or a constituent part of one. Usage of the word college varies in English-speaking nations. A college may be a degree-awarding tertiary educational institution, a part of a collegiate university, or an institution offering vocational education.
In the United States and Italy, "college" formally refers to a constituent part of a university, but generally "college" and "university" are used interchangeably, whereas in Oceania and South Asia, "college" may refer to a secondary or high school, a college of further education, a training institution that awards trade qualifications, or a constituent part of a university (See this comparison of British and American English educational terminology for further information).
In ancient Rome a collegium was a club or society, a group of people living together under a common set of rules (con- = "together" + leg- = "law" or lego = "I choose" or "I read").
Elizabeth is a common female given name. For more information, including people with that name, see Elizabeth (given name).
Elizabeth may also refer to:
Women's colleges in higher education are undergraduate, bachelor's degree-granting institutions, often liberal arts colleges, whose student populations are composed exclusively or almost exclusively of women. Some women's colleges admit male students to their graduate schools or in smaller numbers to undergraduate programs, but all serve a primarily female student body.
A woman's college offers an academic curriculm exclusively or primarily, while a girl's or woman's finishing school (sometimes called a charm school) focuses on social graces such as deportment, etiquette, and entertaining; academics if offered are secondary. The term finishing school has sometimes been used or misused to describe certain women's colleges. Some of these colleges may have started as finishing schools but transformed themselves into rigorous liberal arts academic institutions, as for instance the now defunct Finch College. Likewise the secondary school Miss Porter's School was founded as Miss Porter's Finishing School for Young Ladies in 1843; now it emphasizes an academic curriculumn. A woman's college that had never described itself as a finishing school can suffer the misnomer. Throughout the 114-year history of the women's college Sweet Briar students and alumnae have objected to calling it a finishing school. Nonetheless the finishing school characterization persisted, and may have contributed to declining enrollment, financial straits, and the school's near closure in 2015.
