Tito Schipa sings 4 Neapolitan songs: O' Marinariello, Come facette mammata and plus...
Tito Schipa (27 December 1888 -- 16 December 1965) was an Italian tenor. He is considered one of the finest tenore di grazia in operatic history. He was endowed with a natural, sensuous voice which he deployed with great intelligence and taste.
[edit] Biography
Schipa was born Raffaele Attilio Amedeo Schipa in Lecce; his birthday was recorded as January 2, 1889 for military conscription purposes. [1] He studied in Milan and made his operatic debut at age 21 in 1910 at Vercelli. He subsequently appeared throughout Italy and in Buenos Aires in Argentina. In 1917, he created the role of Ruggiero in Puccini's La rondine.
In 1919, Schipa travelled to the United States, joining the Chicago Opera Company. He remained with the Chicago company until 1932, whereupon he appeared at the New York Metropolitan Opera from 1932 to 1935, and again in 1941. He also sang at the San Francisco Opera, beginning in 1924.
From 1929 to 1949 he performed regularly in Italy, including at La Scala, Milan and the Rome Opera. He returned to Buenos Aires to sing in 1954. In 1957, he toured the USSR but, oddly, never appeared in opera in England.
Schipa's artistry is preserved on film. For example, in 1929 he appeared in a Vitaphone movie short, singing "M'appari tutt'amor" from Flotow's opera Martha.
Schipa's stage repertoire, which in his early career had encompassed a wide range of Verdi and Puccini roles, eventually contracted to about 20 congenial Italian and French operatic roles, including Massenet's Werther, Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore and Cilea's L'Arlesiana. In concert, Schipa performed a preferred array of lyrical operatic arias and songs, including Neapolitan and Spanish popular songs. He delivered each of them with an infectious spirit and a refined sense of style.
Schipa made numerous audio recordings of arias and songs during his career, beginning in Italy in 1913. His recorded output included a famous 78-rpm set of Donizetti's Don Pasquale, made in 1932. This was one of the earliest complete opera recordings and it is still in circulation on CD.
Like his contemporary Richard Tauber, Tito Schipa was an early exponent of that rare breed of tenor who also conducts. (Latterly, Plácido Domingo carries on that tradition.) Although some contemporary critics considered Schipa's voice to be small in size, restricted in range and slightly husky in timbre, he was still capable of provoking intense public outpourings of support among his legion of fans. These fans were enthralled by Schipa's superior musicianship, as well as by his winning personality and his ability to breathe life into even the most trite song or hackneyed aria. Michael Scott (Record of Singing: 1978) whilst admiring Schipa's charm and taste point out that it is not correct to say that Schipa was a master of bel canto; indeed Scott and others regard Schipa's recording of Il mio tesoro from Don Giovanni as one of the worst ever made, with sloppy runs and sketchy ornamentation. To be fair Schipa himself did not claim to be an exponent of the bel canto style.
Schipa retired from the operatic stage in 1958, (although he undertook concert engagements until 1962,) to teach voice, firstly in Budapest. He died from diabetes in 1965 at the age of 77 in New York City, while teaching there.
He was a National Patron of Delta Omicron, an international professional music fraternity.

-------------------------------------
A charming and flirtatious rendition. The cast is simply stellar and teaches a great lesson of ease of vocal emission, clear diction, and acting naturalness...
Ernesto Badini (1876-1937), here 56, "is" Don Pasquale, experienced, natural, buffo, but not over-caricatured. Badini shows us the heights reached by a lost tradition of "recitar cantando" and the art of being highly expressive while easily singing.
Adelaide Saraceni (1895-1995) perfectly renders the difficult role of "acting an actress", as Norina naturally is. In the meanwhile, she is the same able to render the tender and sincerely enamored soul of the courageous, vivacious and protective Norina. Combining expressivity with showing-off (surely, Donizetti did not conceive of "So anch'io la virtù magica" as an occasion for maidenly modesty) is the genius of Italian singing.
Obviously here Tito Schipa (1888-1965) is playing one of his best suited roles. The idealistic, romantic, sincere, a bit divorced from reality, Ernesto gives him all the right occasions to put in evidence his best and, to some extent, unmatched skills of "tenore di grazia".
M° Cavaliere Carlo Sabajno (1874-1938) served as Toscanini's assistant during the latter's period as chief conductor at Turin and also conducted there himself. From 1904 to 1932, he was the house-conductor of the Italian branch of the Gramophone Company, in fact a "general manager" of the recording projects. Certainly several of his recordings, most of which were made with the Orchestra of La Scala, Milan at a time when Toscanini was musical director there, have stood the test of time.
The quality of this 1932 registration is simply astonishing for its epoch (there are certainly recordings from the 1960s that are no better).

NOTE BY CHARLES MINTZER
In 1983, making a video of an event such as the Coe Glade interview was not as easy as it is today. A VRCS member, George Henderson, rented a video camera and was able to tape 25-30 minutes, the beginning of the program. Another member of the organization, whose name I don't know, taped the program with a hand-held tape recorder from several feet away, and another member of the organization gave me the cassette with most of the remainder of the program. As Coe made no commercial recordings herself, I obtained from the late Andy Karzas of Chicago, dubs of radio checks from the 1930 and 1940s. These radio checks had been copied several times over the years and this accounts for the less-than-ideal sound.
I had met and interviewed Coe Glade several times at her New York apartment on West 73rd Street and Amsterdam Avenue. Therefore I knew very well her stock of stories and anecdotes. In order to have a free-flowing conversation that would elicit her stories we (Arthur Naftal and Eli Solis) did not prepare a printed program; instead the late Arthur Naftal, who had a world-class 78rpm record collection, prepared individual cassettes with the selections we would offer, but did not know the order, or if time constraints would mean some of the prepared selections could not be offered. Therefore the order was relatively spontaneous. In lieu of a printed program I prepared a twenty-plus page handout with biographical information and photos of the very photogenic lady.
In my notes, I did not know, in 1983, a wonderful story that Coe told me about a year later. It seems that The Washington Opera gave a performance of "Carmen" at the Kennedy Center, and the next day several senators were discussing the performance in the senate dining room. Senator Mark Hatfield, Republican senator from Oregon, expressed the opinion that the best Carmen he ever saw over the years was that beautiful and sexy Coe Glade with the touring San Carlo Opera Company in Portland, Oregon. He wondered what ever happened to her. A staff aide located her in New York and he telephoned her to reminisce about that performance and to wish her good health. Coe was very touched.
