The Globe and Mail is a nationally distributed Canadian newspaper, based in Toronto and printed in six cities across the country. With a weekly readership of approximately 1 million,^[2] it is Canada's largest-circulation national newspaper and second-largest daily newspaper after the Toronto Star. The Globe and Mail is widely described as Canada's English-language newspaper of record.^[3]

History[link]

The predecessor to The Globe and Mail was The Globe, founded in 1844 by Scottish immigrant George Brown, who would later become a Father of Confederation. Brown's liberal politics led him to court the support of the Clear Grits, precursor to the modern Liberal Party of Canada. The Globe began in Toronto as a weekly party organ for Brown's Reform Party, but seeing the economic gains that he could make in the newspaper business, Brown soon targeted a wide audience of liberal minded freeholders. He selected as the motto for the editorial page a quotation from Junius, "The subject who is truly loyal to the Chief Magistrate will neither advise nor submit to arbitrary measures." The quotation is carried on the editorial page daily to this day.

By the 1850s, The Globe had become an independent and well-regarded daily newspaper. It began distribution by railway to other cities in Ontario shortly after Canadian Confederation. At the dawn of the twentieth century, The Globe added photography, a women's section, and the slogan "Canada's National Newspaper," which remains on its front-page banner today. It began opening bureaus and offering subscriptions across Canada.

On November 23, 1936, The Globe (which had a circulation of 78,000 by this point) merged with The Mail and Empire (circulation 118,000)^[4], itself formed through a merger in 1895 between The Toronto Mail and Toronto Empire. The Mail was founded in 1872 by a rival of Brown's, Tory politician Sir John A. Macdonald. Macdonald was the first Prime Minister of Canada and the founder of the party that spawned the modern Conservative Party of Canada, and The Mail served as a Conservative Party organ.

With the merger, The Globe became The Globe and Mail. Press reports at the time stated, "the minnow swallowed the whale". The merger was arranged by George McCullagh, who fronted for mining magnate William Henry Wright and became the first publisher of The Globe and Mail. McCullagh committed suicide in 1952, and the newspaper was sold to the Webster family of Montreal. As the paper lost ground to The Toronto Star in the local Toronto market, it began to expand its national circulation.

In 1965, the paper was bought by Winnipeg-based FP Publications, controlled by Brig. Richard Malone, which owned a chain of local Canadian newspapers. FP put a strong emphasis on the Report on Business section that was launched in 1962, thereby building the paper's reputation as the voice of Toronto's business community. FP Publications and The Globe and Mail were sold in 1980 to The Thomson Corporation, a company run by the family of Kenneth Thomson.

In 2001, The Globe and Mail was combined with broadcast assets held by Bell Canada to form the joint venture Bell Globemedia. Nine years later, at the end of 2010, the Thomson family, through its holding company Woodbridge, acquired direct control of The Globe and Mail with an 85-percent stake. BCE continues to hold 15 percent.^[5][6]

The Globe and Mail has always been a morning newspaper. Since the 1980s, it has been printed in separate editions in six Canadian cities: Halifax, Montreal, Toronto (several editions), Winnipeg (actually printed in Brandon, Manitoba), Calgary and Vancouver.

In 1995, the paper launched its Web site, globeandmail.com; on June 9, 2000, the Web site began covering breaking news with its own content and journalists in addition to the content of the print newspaper.^[7] It later spawned a companion Web site, globeinvestor.com, focusing on financial and investment-related news. In 2004, access to some features of globeandmail.com became restricted to paid subscribers only. The subscription service was revised a few years later to become a service called Globe Plus, which offers an e-edition of the newspaper, access to its archives, as well as membership to a premium investment site.

Political stance[link]

Even before the Globe merged with the Mail and Empire, the paper was widely considered the voice of the Upper Canada elite—that is, the Bay Street financial community of Toronto and the intellectuals of university and government institutions. The merger of the Liberal Globe and the Tory Mail and Empire prefigured the paper's characteristically Red Tory editorial stance, as its support alternated between the two established national parties. In the past century, the paper has consistently endorsed either the Liberal Party or the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada in every federal election. The paper had endorsed a third party on two occasions at the provincial level: it endorsed the social-democratic New Democratic Party in the 1991 Saskatchewan provincial election and British Columbia provincial election. The New Democrats won both elections and went on to form provincial governments.

While the paper was known as a generally conservative voice of the business establishment in the postwar decades, historian David Hayes, in a review of its positions, has noted that the Globe's editorials in this period "took a benign view of hippies and homosexuals; championed most aspects of the welfare state; opposed, after some deliberation, the Vietnam War; and supported legalizing marijuana." It was a 1967 Globe and Mail editorial that coined the phrase "The State has no place in the bedrooms of the nation," in defence of legalization of homosexuality. The line was later picked up by future Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau to become one of his most famous slogans.

Under the editorship of William Thorsell in the 1980s and 1990s, the paper strongly endorsed the free trade policies of Progressive Conservative Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. The paper also became an outspoken proponent of the Meech Lake Accord and the Charlottetown Accord, with their editorial the day of the 1995 Quebec Referendum mostly quoting a Mulroney speech in favour of the Accord.^[8] During this period, the paper continued to favour such socially liberal policies as decriminalizing drugs (including cocaine, whose legalization was advocated most recently in a 1995 editorial) and expanding gay rights.

In the 1990s and early 2000s, the paper generally supported the policies of Liberal Prime Ministers Jean Chrétien and Paul Martin. In the 2006 federal election, the paper turned away from the Liberals to Stephen Harper's Conservative Party of Canada. In the subsequent 2008 federal election and 2011 federal election the paper's editorial board again endorsed the Conservatives.^[9]

Recent developments[link]

In recent years, the paper has made changes to its format and layout, such as the introduction of colour photographs, a separate tabloid book-review section and the creation of the Review section on arts, entertainment and culture. Although the paper is sold throughout Canada and has long called itself "Canada's National Newspaper", The Globe and Mail also serves as a Toronto metropolitan paper, publishing several special sections in its Toronto edition that are not included in the national edition. As a result, it is sometimes ridiculed for being too focused on the Greater Toronto Area, part of a wider humorous portrayal of Torontonians being blind to the greater concerns of the nation. (A reverse criticism is sometimes applied to The New York Times, with regards to its shrinking New York coverage in relation to its US coverage). Critics^[who?] sometimes refer to the paper as the Toronto Globe and Mail or Toronto's National Newspaper. Recently, in an effort to gain market share in Vancouver, The Globe and Mail began publishing a distinct west-coast edition, edited independently in Vancouver, containing a three-page section of British Columbia news.^{[citation needed]}

Other satirical nicknames for the paper include Mop and Pail or Grope and Flail, both of which were coined by longtime Globe and Mail humour columnist Richard J. Needham. The University of British Columbia's student paper, The Ubyssey published a parody issue titled Glib and Male. The spring 2008 issue of the Ryerson Review of Journalism referenced the nickname "Old and Male" for the paper's employee base and perceived target audience.

Since the launch of the National Post as another English-language national paper in 1998, some industry analysts have proclaimed a "national newspaper war" between The Globe and Mail and the National Post. Thus far, however, The Globe and Mail has continued to outsell the National Post.^{[citation needed]}

On April 23, 2007, the paper introduced significant changes to its print design and also introduced a new unified navigation system to its websites.^[10] The paper added a "lifestyle" section to the Monday-Friday editions, entitled Globe Life, which has been described as an attempt to attract readers from the rival Toronto Star. Additionally, the paper followed other North American papers by dropping detailed stock listings in print and by shrinking the printed paper to a 12-inch width.

During the 2010 Winter Olympics, which were staged in Vancouver, The Globe and Mail published a Sunday edition, making it the first time that the paper has ever published on Sunday.^{[citation needed]}

Redesign and relaunch 2010[link]

On October 1, 2010, The Globe and Mail unveiled redesigns to both its paper and online formats, dubbed "the most significant redesign in The Globe's history" by Editor-in-Chief John Stackhouse.^[11] The paper version has a bolder, more visual presentation that features 100% full-colour pages, more graphics, slightly glossy paper stock (with the use of state-of-the-art heat-set printing presses), and emphasis on lifestyle and similar sections (an approached dubbed "Globe-lite" by one media critic).^[12] The Globe and Mail sees this redesign as a step toward the future (promoted as such by a commercial featuring a young girl on a bicycle),^[13] as well as a step towards provoking debate on national issues (the October 1 edition featured a rare front page editorial above the Globe and Mail banner).^[11][14]

Margaret Wente (born 15 February 1950) is a columnist for Canada's largest national daily newspaper, The Globe and Mail and a director of the Energy Probe Research Foundation. She has received the National Newspaper Award for column-writing twice.^[1]

Wente was born in Evanston, Illinois and moved to Toronto in 1964, and has since become a naturalized Canadian citizen. She holds a BA in English from the University of Michigan and a MA in English from the University of Toronto.^[1] She joined The Globe and Mail in 1986. She has been editor of the paper's business section, the ROB [Report on Business], and managing editor of the paper.^[1] Her columns have appeared in the Globe and Mail since 1992, and she has been a full-time columnist for the paper since 1999. She is a frequent commentator on television and radio, and has won numerous journalism awards.^[1]

Leah McLaren is a Canadian author and newspaper columnist.

Born in Peterborough, Ontario, McLaren attended Claude Watson School for the Arts in Toronto. She studied English literature at McGill University in Montreal, and Trent University in Peterborough, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the latter in 1998. While at Trent she wrote the radio drama Percy and the Pomegranate.

When she was eighteen, McLaren worked as an intern and wrote a feature article for the Canadian monthly This Magazine. After several summers as an intern at The Globe and Mail (the national newspaper at which her mother - Cecily Ross - was an editor at the time) McLaren became an arts reporter, and then the newspaper's London arts correspondent. While in England, her writing was published in several newspapers including The Times, The Evening Standard, and The Sunday Telegraph, as well as in the weekly magazine The Spectator, for which she wrote a controversial and widely read cover story on the romantic failure of the modern English male.^[1] In 2008, the CBC shot Abroad, a television movie of the week, written and produced by McLaren and based on her experiences as a young Canadian newspaper reporter living and dating in London. It aired once, on March 14, 2010 and was being developed as a series; until CBC Television axed it before any other episodes were made.^[2]

McLaren was best known for her regular Saturday column in the Life section of The Globe and Mail, in which she talks about living as a single woman in modern-day Toronto. She now writes a column in the Arts section. She also writes "The Leah Files", a monthly column in Flare, Canada's top-selling fashion magazine. She has written for other publications including Toronto Life, McGill Daily, ROB, Fashion, and EnRoute.

McLaren's first novel, The Continuity Girl was published by Harper Collins in 2005. It follows a young film professional — the titular "continuity girl" — in her search for a perfect — and unsuspecting — man to father her child. She is currently at work on her second novel for HarperCollins.

Jan Wong (Chinese: 黃明珍; pinyin: Huáng Míngzhēn; born 1952^[1] in Montreal, Quebec) is a Canadian journalist. Wong worked for The Globe and Mail, serving as Beijing correspondent from 1988 to 1994, when she returned to write from Canada. She is the daughter of Montreal businessman Bill Wong, founder of Bill Wong's buffet which was the city's first Chinese restaurant to open outside of Chinatown.^[2]

Life after the Cultural Revolution[link]

Towards the end of the Cultural Revolution period, she left McGill University and flew to China. The Maoist became one of two foreign college students permitted to study at Beijing University. While at Beijing she denounced a trusting fellow student who had sought her help to escape communist China to the West. The student was subsequently shamed and expelled.^[3] "She suffered a lot ... she was sent to the countryside for hard labour. When she came back, she fought hard to clear her name." Long after, Wong takes comfort in having returned from her own escape to the West, and eventually found this person again, learning she had not been her confidante's only betrayer, and that she expressed no anger.^[4] Wong wrote another book, and did interviews on her own experience.^[5]

Wong met her future husband Norman Shulman while studying in China and married him in 1976. The couple have two sons: Ben (b. 1991) and Sam (b. 1993). Shulman, an American draft dodger of the Vietnam Era, had joined his father Jack Shulman in China and remained there when Jack and his wife Ruth left China during the turmoil of the Cultural Revolution. Shulman worked as a text-polisher for Chinese propaganda magazine China Reconstructs.

Journalism career[link]

In the late 1970s, Wong began her career in journalism when she was hired as a news assistant by Fox Butterfield, China correspondent for the New York Times. Wong became tired of Party ideology and returned to Canada from Beijing. She then studied journalism at Columbia, receiving a Masters degree, and found work with the Montreal Gazette, Boston Globe and the Wall Street Journal before joining the Globe and Mail as a business reporter.^[6]

In 1988, sent her to China where she worked for six years as its foreign correspondent among other things covered the Tiananmen Massacre.^[7] She later chronicled her Chinese experience in a book, Red China Blues, which was promptly banned in China. After a return trip in the late nineties, she produced a second book entitled Jan Wong's China, a somewhat less personal account of social life, the economy, and politics in modern-day China.

After China[link]

From 1996 to 2002, Wong was best known for her Lunch with... column in The Globe and Mail, in which she had lunch with a celebrity, who was usually but not always Canadian. Her Lunch columns were often noted for publishing her take on the private, titillating side of her lunch companions — Margaret Atwood was depicted as a prickly diva who refused to eat her lunch because she was unhappy with the table, and Gene Simmons revealed the size of his penis.^[8] In one of her most famous Lunch columns, Wong took a homeless woman to lunch.

After Lunch with Jan Wong was retired in 2002, Wong moved on to other journalistic roles with The Globe and Mail. In 2006, Wong attracted attention by imitating the work of Barbara Ehrenreich and going undercover as a cleaning lady in wealthy Toronto homes.^[9] While employed by the Globe and Mail as a reporter Jan Wong impersonated a maid and then wrote about her experiences in a five-part series on low-income living. The newspaper published the stories in the spring of 2006. Members of a Markham family sued the newspaper and Wong, alleging they suffered "significant embarrassment and mental distress."^[10]

Dawson College controversy[link]

Wong published the article "Get under the desk" in The Globe and Mail on September 16, 2006.^[11] In it, the author drew a link between the actions of Marc Lépine, Valery Fabrikant and Kimveer Gill, assassins of the shootings of the École Polytechnique, Concordia University and Dawson College respectively, and the existence in Quebec of bill 101, the "decades-long linguistic struggle". She implied a relation between the fact that the three were not old-stock Québécois and the murders they committed, since they were, according to Wong, alienated in a Quebec society concerned with "racial purity".

Public outcry and political condemnation, and publicity soon followed. The Saint-Jean-Baptiste Society lodged a complaint to the Press Council of Quebec and Quebec Premier Jean Charest called the article a "disgrace" and, in an open letter to the Globe, wrote that it was a testimony of her ignorance of Canadian values demonstrating a profound incomprehension of the Quebec society.^[12] Charest demanded an apology from Wong to all Québécois. Prime Minister Stephen Harper denounced Wong's article in a letter to the newspaper published on September 21, 2006 saying that her "argument is patently absurd and without foundation."^[13] On September 20, the House of Commons unanimously passed a motion requesting an apology for the column.^[14]

Globe and Mail editor Edward Greenspon responded to the controversy by publishing a column asserting that Wong's opinion should not have been included in the piece, which Wong viewed as a betrayal by her employer as Greenspon had previously read and approved her story.^[15]

Wong descended into a long period of deep depression following the controversy and, unable to work, went on sick leave. The Globe ordered her back to work,^[6] withdrew her sick pay and ultimately negotiated her dismissal with an undisclosed monetary settlement.^[16][17][15] According to Wong: "I wrote a feature story that sparked a political backlash, my employers failed to support me and later silenced me, and after I became clinically depressed, they fired me.”^[15]

Recent work[link]

As of 2009, Wong was an occasional Friday host on The Current on CBC Radio 1.^[18]

In 2010, Wong was Visiting Irving Chair of Journalism at St. Thomas University in Fredericton, N.B. She now writes a column for Toronto Life magazine about such topics as mixed marriages, monster houses and Mayor Rob Ford's mysterious wife. She also writes for Chatelaine. A British documentary company is planning a film based on her book, Beijing Confidential (published in the U.K. under the title, Chinese Whispers).^[19]

She is also a columnist for the Halifax Chronicle Herald, the largest independently owned newspaper in Canada.^[20]

Her new book, Out of the Blue: A Memoir of Workplace Depression, Recovery, Redemption and, Yes, Happiness, is a memoir of her experience with clinical depression where Jan Wong described in detail the backlash she received immediately after her article published and how the Globe and Mail management, in her view, abandoned her in front of the torrent of negative reactions from all sides. She found the 'exact moment I began my descent into depression' when she was shattered by racial attack. ^[21] This book was self-published after Doubleday, the publisher of her previous books, pulled out mere days before print although Doubleday denied any legal interference from The Globe.^[15]. It was released May 5, 2012.^[22][23]

Stephanie Nolen (born September 3, 1971 in Montreal) is a Canadian journalist and writer. She is currently the South Asia bureau chief for The Globe and Mail. From 2003 to 2008, she was the Globe's Africa bureau chief, and she has reported from more than 40 countries around the world. She is a six-time National Newspaper Award winner for her work in Africa, and a four-time recipient of the Amnesty International Award for Human Rights Reporting. Her book on Africa's AIDS pandemic, 28: Stories of AIDS in Africa^[1], was nominated for the 2007 Governor General's Literary Award^[2] and has been published in 15 countries. She is the co-founder of the Museum of AIDS in Africa.^[3] She currently lives in New Delhi.

Early life and education[link]

Nolen was raised in Montreal and Ottawa. She earned a degree in journalism from the University of King's College in Halifax, then earned a Master's degree in economic development from the London School of Economics. Fluent in French, she can also work in Arabic, Spanish and Hindi.

Journalistic career[link]

Nolen was a freelance journalist based in Jerusalem from 1994–97 and an investigative reporter at Maclean's 1997–98. She has been a freelance contributor to Newsweek, The Independent and other publications. Her career at The Globe and Mail began in 1993. She was an Arts Reporter from 1998-2000 and a National Reporter from 2000-2003. She served as its correspondent covering the invasion of Afghanistan and the fall of the Taliban. She continued this theme in covering the 2003 invasion of Iraq. In 2003, Nolen became the Globe's Africa Bureau Chief (2003-08). Her dispatches concerned the consequences of war and political instability in a variety of places within Africa, particularly Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, Zimbabwe, and Uganda (specifically the Lord's Resistance Army). However, the most recurring theme in her coverage was the health, social, and political consequences of the AIDS epidemic in Africa. She is currently The Globe and Mail's South Asia Bureau Chief.

National Newspaper Awards

• 2003 – International Reporting, profile of Stephen Lewis and his dogged campaign to help Africa with its AIDS crisis.
• 2004 – International Reporting, for her story about Rwanda 10 years after the country was ripped apart by genocidal warfare.
• 2007 – Explanatory Work, for her story on how inexpensive vaccinations, mosquito nets and vitamins are saving the lives of children in the developing world.
• 2009 – Explanatory Work, for a piece on the paradox of newly prosperous India's malnourished children.
• 2011 – International Reporting for a series of stories, videos and interactive maps, profiling girls at the bottom of India's caste system attending a groundbreaking school.
• 2011 – Arts and Entertainment, Nolen gained access to the secretive set of Midnight's Children in Sri Lanka, where director Deepa Mehta – whose films have outraged Hindu fundamentalists in India – adapted the most celebrated work of Salman Rushdie.
