Abstract:
Serpentinizing systems -- in which aqueous alteration of ultramafic rocks yields highly reducing and alkaline fluids -- have been suggested as possible niches for photosynthesis-independent ecosystems on Earth and beyond. To date, most research has focused on systems characterized by extremes of pH or redox potential, and on surface expressions (e.g., springs or vents) where deeply-sourced fluids mix with the surface chemistry.
To capture a broader cross-section of the geochemical diversity in serpentinizing systems, and to assess the biological potential of unmixed subsurface fluids, we established the Coast Range Ophiolite Microbial Observatory, a series of wells drilled into the actively serpentinzing subsurface of the McLaughlin Natural Reserve (Lake County, California).
Observations of mineralogy and microbial community composition in cored materials, aqueous geochemistry in recovered well fluids, and biological process rates in fluids and cored materials were combined with geochemical and bioenergetic models that relate host-rock composition and hydrology to biological potential. Both modeled and observational results indicate that natural variability in serpentinizing systems can generate a broad spectrum of geochemical conditions, and correspondingly wide range of biological potential. This range of conditions appears to cross the boundary from habitable to uninhabitable with regard to biological energy requirements, tolerance to extremely alkaline pH, or both.

The alkaline hydrothermal theory for the emergence of life holds that the endergonic (thermodynamically uphill) reactions vital for life's origin and continued existence require free energy converters (nano-engines) fuelled by various disequilibria. The first two primary engines were i) a carbon fixation engine to generate the organic building blocks of life by reaction between hydrothermal CH4 and H2 with the CO2 and NO in atmosphere and ocean, ii) a proton pyrophosphatase engine exploiting the natural pH gradient between alkaline hydrothermal solution and acidulous ocean to drive biosynthesis by condensations of these same building blocks.
To this end there occurred on the early Earth and other such rocky bodies, inorganic prebiotic molecules that would have been precipitated at the interface between a submarine alkaline hydrothermal solution and the metal-bearing acidulous ocean.
Dr. Russell will show how these metals, especially iron, occurred as readymade nano-scale sulfides and oxides with the same structures and valences as the active centers of those biotic metalloenzymes shown to be present in the Last Universal Common Ancestor of all life.

Proponents of so-called "abiotic oil" claim that the PROOF is found in the fact that many capped wells, which were formerly dry of oil, are found to be plentiful again after many years, They claim that the replenished oil is manufactured by natural forces in the Earth's mantle.
Until now these believers in "abiotic oil" have been dismissed as professing "bad science" but -- alas -- a new study has proven them correct!
Reported in ScienceDaily, researchers at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm have managed to prove that fossils from animals and plants are not necessary for crude oil and natural gas to be generated. The findings are revolutionary since this means, on the one hand, that it WILL be much easier to find these sources of energy and, on the other hand, that they can be found all over the globe.
Abiotic Oil
The abiotic oil formation theory suggests that crude oil is the result of naturally occurring and possibly ongoing geological processes. This theory was developed in the Soviet Union during the Cold War, as the Union needed to be self sufficient in terms of producing its own energy. The science behind the theory is sound and is based on experimental evidence in both the laboratory and in the field. This theory has helped to IDENTIFY and therefore develop large numbers of gas and oil deposits. Examples of such fields are the South Khylchuyu field and the controversial Sakhalin II field.
"The savings will be in the many billions," says Vladimir Kutcherov.
According to Vladimir Kutcherov, these research findings are extremely important, not least as 61 percent of the world's energy consumption derives from crude oil and natural gas.

I was researching serpentinization, the metamorphic hydration and oxidation of the earth's deepest rocks with liquid water, at an unimaginably beautiful sight as part of a NASA astrobiology project laying the groundwork for the search for life beyond our own planet. Along the way I discovered that there are real aliens already present around the earth and tried to get a real investigation by my boss Ken Nealson, the founding Chief Scientist of NASA's Life Detection Group. He censored me from a stellar astrobiology career, but I am battling my way back with truth and humble offering of my unpublished work to the world via Youtube. It's calcium++ in the water binding CO2 from the atmosphere extremely rapidly, highlighting the extreme disequilibrium between the emerging serpentinized fluids with the atmosphere, literally being etched in the stone before your eyes.

Everybody knows that oil and gas drilled out of the earth comes from the remains of plants and animals trapped underground millions of years ago. This received wisdom so dominates our thinking that it is enshrined in the very language we use--fossil fuels. They took eons to form, and we are using them up far faster than they can be replenished.
What if the whole theory is wrong?
That's the premise of a small but passionate band of Russian and Ukrainian contrarians. They argue that oil and gas don't come from fossils; they're synthesized deep within the earth's mantle by heat, pressure and other purely chemical means, before gradually rising to the surface. Under the so-called abiotic theory of oil, finding all the energy we need is just a matter of looking beyond the traditional basins where fossils might have accumulated.
The idea that oil comes from fossils "is a myth.
We need to change this myth," says petroleum engineer Vladimir Kutcherov, at the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden. "All kinds of rocks could have oil and gas deposits."
Alexander Kitchka of the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences brashly estimates that 60% of the content of all oil is abiotic in origin, and not from fossil fuels. He says companies should drill deeper to find it.
Kitchka says oil may be found in all sorts of geological structures such as volcanic rock or deep-sea thermal vents where companies aren't looking today.

Serpentinite is a rock composed of one or more serpentine group minerals. Minerals in this group are formed by serpentinization, a hydration and metamorphic transformation of ultramafic rock from the Earth's mantle. The alteration is particularly important at the sea floor at tectonic plate boundaries.
Serpentinization is a geological low-temperature metamorphic process involving heat and water in which low-silica mafic and ultramafic rocks are oxidized (anaerobic oxidation of Fe2+ by the protons of water leading to the formation of H2) and hydrolyzed with water into serpentinite. Peridotite, including dunite, at and near the seafloor and in mountain belts is converted to serpentine, brucite, magnetite, and other minerals — some rare, such as awaruite (Ni3Fe), and even native iron. In the process large amounts of water are absorbed into the rock increasing the volume and destroying the structure.
The density changes from 3.3 to 2.7 g/cm3 with a concurrent volume increase of about 40%. The reaction is exothermic and large amounts of heat energy are produced in the process.

Everybody knows that oil and gas drilled out of the earth comes from the remains of plants and animals trapped underground millions of years ago. This received wisdom so dominates our thinking that it is enshrined in the very language we use--fossil fuels. They took eons to form, and we are using them up far faster than they can be replenished. What if the whole theory is wrong? That's the premise of a small but passionate band of Russian and Ukrainian contrarians. They argue that oil and gas don't come from fossils; they're synthesized deep within the earth's mantle by heat, pressure and other purely chemical means, before gradually rising to the surface. Under the so-called abiotic theory of oil, finding all the energy we need is just a matter of looking beyond the traditional basins where fossils might have accumulated. The idea that oil comes from fossils "is a myth. We need to change this myth," says petroleum engineer Vladimir Kutcherov, at the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden. "All kinds of rocks could have oil and gas deposits." Alexander Kitchka of the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences brashly estimates that 60% of the content of all oil is abiotic in origin, and not from fossil fuels. He says companies should drill deeper to find it. Kitchka says oil may be found in all sorts of geological structures such as volcanic rock or deep-sea thermal vents where companies aren't looking today. -

Observations of mineralogy and microbial community composition in cored materials, aqueous geochemistry in recovered well fluids, and biological process rates in fluids and cored materials were combined with geochemical and bioenergetic models that relate host-rock composition and hydrology to biological potential. Both modeled and observational results indicate that natural variability in serpentinizing systems can generate a broad spectrum of geochemical conditions, and correspondingly wide range of biological potential. This range of conditions appears to cross the boundary from habitable to uninhabitable with regard to biological energy requirements, tolerance to extremely alkaline pH, or both.

The abiotic oil formation theory suggests that crude oil is the result of naturally occurring and possibly ongoing geological processes. This theory was developed in the Soviet Union during the Cold War, as the Union needed to be self sufficient in terms of producing its own energy. The science behind the theory is sound and is based on experimental evidence in both the laboratory and in the field. This theory has helped to IDENTIFY and therefore develop large numbers of gas and oil deposits. Examples of such fields are the South Khylchuyu field and the controversial Sakhalin II field.

I was researching serpentinization, the metamorphic hydration and oxidation of the earth's deepest rocks with liquid water, at an unimaginably beautiful sight as part of a NASA astrobiology project laying the groundwork for the search for life beyond our own planet. Along the way I discovered that there are real aliens already present around the earth and tried to get a real investigation by my boss Ken Nealson, the founding Chief Scientist of NASA's Life Detection Group. What you see is literally 162 days of footage with one image per day shown from the 6pm hour, replayed several times at various magnification from the same spring. These springs are incredibly abundant at The Cedars, which was my PhD research site prior to resigning in protest after being censored from speaking to the NASA Chief about real aliens and the simple scientific process I'd followed to "detect them", including listening to the hundreds of NASA and military whistle blowers who were trying to get a real investigation.
When honest people with great minds and great talent get supported by their community over the blind censorship of rich egos then our world will know it can attain peace. Until then, we've got a lot of work to do...

This received wisdom so dominates our thinking that it is enshrined in the very language we use--fossil fuels. They took eons to form, and we are using them up far faster than they can be replenished.
What if the whole theory is wrong?
That's the premise of a small but passionate band of Russian and Ukrainian contrarians. They argue that oil and gas don't come from fossils; they're synthesized deep within the earth's mantle by heat, pressure and other purely chemical means, before gradually rising to the surface. Under the so-called abiotic theory of oil, finding all the energy we need is just a matter of looking beyond the traditional basins where fossils might have accumulated.
The idea that oil comes from fossils "is a myth.
We need to change this myth," says petroleum engineer Vladimir Kutcherov, at the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden. "All kinds of rocks could have oil and gas deposits."
Alexander Kitchka of the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences brashly estimates that 60% of the content of all oil is abiotic in origin, and not from fossil fuels. He says companies should drill deeper to find it.
Kitchka says oil may be found in all sorts of geological structures such as volcanic rock or deep-sea thermal vents where companies aren't looking today.
