Transportation Bill Update -- The League of American Bicyclists Thanks You!
www.bikeleague.org The League of American Bicyclists and president of the League Andy Clarke thank all of you for taking part in this very important action alert to encourage your senators to pass a clean extension of the transportation bill. Thanks for telling your senators that "I bike. I vote."; that bicycle and pedestrian projects are important to you, your businesses, and our economy; and for spreading the word in your clubs and stores, with your colleagues and friends, and on your social media sites. All of your calls and e-mails to your state representatives made the difference. We will have a lot of work ahead of us in the next six months to protect bicycling in the next transportation bill or extension, and we will be on Capitol Hill March 22 at the National Bike Summit asking our representatives to SAVE CYCLING. wwww.bikeleague.org

The Rights and Duties of Cyclists - Bicycle Safety
League of American Bicyclists certified traffic cycling instructors demonstrate the rights and duties of cyclists in the United States. The video shows cyclists acting as drivers of vehicles making normal vehicular maneuvers including lane control, lane sharing, left and right turns, through movements and a freeway ramp crossing. This video is intended to show cyclists and motorists how it looks when cyclists act and are treated as vehicle drivers in normal urban traffic in the City of Long Beach, California. These skills are taught by the League of American Bicyclists, Smart Cycling program. You can find instructors and classes in your state at the education area of the League website: www.bikeleague.org

Greenville: Bicycle Friendly Community
The League of American Bicyclists has honored Greenville with its prestigious Bicycle Friendly Community award. Greenville was granted the bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community designation for four years and the League of American Bicyclists will provide the City with feedback on what it can do to make Greenville even more bicycle-friendly. Over the past five years, the City has installed eight miles of bicycle lanes and there are currently 10 miles of paved bicycle trails throughout the city. The City plans to install an additional five miles of bicycle lanes on city streets within the next year. The City also has a Bicycle Parking Ordinance that requires most new developments which provide vehicular parking to also provide bicycle parking and in 2008, City Council passed a Complete Streets resolution which ensures that all roadway users are accommodated in new road construction projects. The City submitted its Bicycle Friendly Community application in August 2009. The application was carefully reviewed and scored by a committee, which also consulted with local cyclists in the Greenville community. Communities are judged in five categories, which the League of American Bicyclists refers to as the Five Es: Engineering, Education, Encouragement, Enforcement and Evaluation & Planning. A community must demonstrate achievements in each of the five categories in order to be considered for an award.

Bicycle Driving on SoCal Arterials
Two League of American Bicyclists certified traffic cycling instructors demonstrate how to safely and legally ride on major southern California arterial roads by acting as vehicle drivers. All of the video is un-staged, shot in real daytime traffic. The key lesson of this video is that cyclists who first act as drivers, are then treated as drivers. These advanced traffic skills can be learned in the League of American Bicyclists Bike Ed Program.
