After attempting to ram down the gates to the White House, Miriam Carey, 34, a dental hygienist who once lived in Brooklyn led Secret Service agents and police on a pursuit toward the U.S. Capitol where she was gunned down. The chaos temporarily put the U.S. Capitol in lockdown.
A crazed Connecticut woman who tried to ram her way into the White House was shot and killed Thursday after she led police on a high-speed chase through the heart of Washington that left two police officers injured.
Miriam Carey, a 34-year-old dental hygienist from Stamford who once lived in Brooklyn, had a year-old child in the car with her who was not hurt, officials said.
"This appears to be an isolated incident," said Capitol Police Chief Kim Dine. "There is no nexus to terrorism."
ABC News reported the woman had a history of "mental health issues."
The drama began around 2:20 p.m., officials said, after Carey --- driving a leased black Infiniti -- sped into the driveway leading into the White House and tried to breach security at 15th and E Streets, officials said.
Thwarted by the pylons and confronted by cops with their guns drawn, Carey spun the car around and hit the gas -- knocking a Secret Service agent over the hood of the car as she sped away.
With Capitol police and Secret Service agents in hot pursuit, Carey raced 12 blocks toward the Capitol, chased at speeds of up to 80 mph at some points.
At Constitution Ave. and Second St., she collided a Capitol Police car and then barreled into some barricades outside the Hart Senate Office building, Dine said.

RAW NEW FOOTAGE VIDEO -- Car Chase Shooting in the White House Capitol Washington DC 2013 Driver rams Car Chase Shooting in the White House Capitol Washington DC RAW Footage Car Chase Shooting in the White House Capitol Washington DC Car chase ends with shots fired near U.S. Capitol, suspect dead.
WASHINGTON — The woman who led police on a high-speed chase that ended near the U.S. Capitol building has been pronounced dead, Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier said Thursday evening.
The pursuit ended when police fired shots at the suspect at a traffic circle near the Capitol building, and then again on the corner of Maryland and 1st Street NE only a few blocks away.
Two officers were injured during the incident: one was a Secret Service agent and the other, a 23-year veteran of the U.S. Capitol Police, Chief Kim Dine said. The injured Capitol Police officer, Dine added, "is doing well."
Police located a 1-year-old girl inside the suspect's car, a black Infiniti sedan with Connecticut plates. The child was not injured, police and the Secret Service said, but was taken to a local hospital after the car crashed.
Authorities did not identify the suspect at an early evening press conference, but the Associated Press reported that Stamford, Conn., Mayor Michael Pavia said the FBI was searching a Stamford address in connection with the investigation. Police cordoned off a condominium building and the surrounding neighborhood.
The incident, which began around 2:20 p.m. ET, initially led to a shelter-in-place warning at all U.S. Capitol office buildings, but the warning was later lifted.
"We have no information that this is related to terrorism or is anything other than an isolated incident," Dine told reporters. But law enforcement authorities also said the chase appeared "to be no accident."
The matter is currently under investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department, with assistance from U.S. Capitol Police, the FBI and the Secret Service.
Earlier Tim Wilson, a spokesperson with the District of Columbia Fire and EMS Department, told Yahoo News that medical personnel transported one patient from the scene who suffered life-threatening injuries. He would not disclose the gender of the patient or the nature of the injuries.
Police could be seen swarming the grounds near the Capitol Building with guns drawn as the incident unfolded.

WATCH: Video of Female Suspect Car Chase after Ramming White House Gate in Capitol Shooting
Shots fired near Capitol after car chase starting at White House
(Fox News) A chaotic car chase that began when a woman tried to ram a security barrier near the White House ended with shots being fired near the U.S. Capitol, putting the Hill temporarily on lockdown and causing what one witness described as "mass panic."
According to U.S. Capitol Police, one officer was injured in a related car crash.
The chase and subsequent stand-off near the Capitol went down as lawmakers were debating under the dome about the partial government shutdown. Officials say the incident was not related to terrorism, and the suspect is in custody.
One person could be seen being carried off in a stretcher -- it's not clear if that was the officer in question. It's also not clear who fired the shots.
Terrance Gainer, the Senate sergeant at arms, told Fox News that this appears to be an "isolated incident." Gainer also said the officer injured crashed a police cruiser while trying to join the chase. The cruiser "seriously clipped" a barricade, he said, but the injuries are "not life threatening."
The chase and stand-off caused panic on Capitol Hill, with sirens blaring inside the building and lawmakers and their staff being ordered to stay in place. The lockdown has since been lifted, and those inside the Capitol are no longer being ordered to "shelter in place."
Sources told Fox News the incident began with a car chase, which started when a woman tried to ram a gate near the White House.
Several police cars pursued her to a location near the Capitol building. When they boxed her in, sources said, the driver got out and five or six shots were fired. Witnesses saw a baby being taken from the car.
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene.
"We were definitely caught off guard, we were scared," said Matt Knuppeo, who said he was touring the Capitol building when the stand-off unfolded. "It was mass panic for a while."
"We just heard the gun shots -- pow pow pow pow," witness Emily Wheeler told Fox News.
The developments come as lawmakers were debating a series of small spending bills, amid the ongoing partial government shutdown.

Driver Miriam Carey killed in U.S. Capitol Shooting
Miriam Carey, the woman identified in news reports as the suspect in a shooting incident that left Capitol Hill on lockdown for a brief period Thursday afternoon, and has now reportedly been shot dead by police. Carey, a 34-year-old dental hygienist.
Miriam Carey and her 1-year-old girl led Secret Service and police on a harrowing car chase from the White House past the Capitol Thursday, attempting to penetrate the security barriers at both national landmarks before she was shot to death, police said. The child survived.
"I'm pretty confident this was not an accident," said Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier. Still, Capitol Police said there appeared to be no terrorist link. The woman apparently was unarmed. Tourists, congressional staff and even some senators watched as a caravan of law enforcement vehicles chase a black Infiniti with Connecticut license plates down Constitution Avenue outside the Capitol. House and Senate lawmakers, inside debating how to end a government shutdown, briefly shuttered their chambers as Capitol Police shut down the building.

Miriam Carey, Capitol Suspect, Suffered Post-Partum Depression
Miriam Carey, Capitol Suspect, Suffered Post-Partum Depression A woman killed by police today after a high-speed chase through Washington, D.C., that led to a lockdown of Capitol Hill suffered post-partum depression following the recent birth of her daughter, the suspect's mother told ABC News.
The woman was believed to be Miriam Carey, 34, a dental hygienist from Stamford, Conn., authorities told the woman's family, according to a family spokesman.
Police earlier said they were witholding the name of the driver of the car involved in the chase pending positive identification and notification of next of kin.
Authorities said the woman led police on a chase down Pennsylvania Avenue to the Capitol after ramming a gate at the White House.
Authorities described Carey has having a "mental illness."
"She had post-partum depression after having the baby" last August, said the woman's mother, Idella Carey.
She added, "A few months later, she got sick. She was depressed. ... She was hospitalized."
Carey had a 1-year-old daughter named Erica, her mother said. Police confirmed that a 1-year-old girl was taken from the car and put in "protective custody."
Idella Carey said her daughter had "no history of violence" and she did not know why she was in Washington, D.C. She said she believed Carey was taking the little girl to a doctor's appointment today in Connecticut.
Dr. Steven Oken, her boss of eight years, described Carey as a "non-political person" who was "always happy."
"I would never in a million years believe that she would do something like this," he said. "It's the furthest thing from anything I would think she would do, especially with her child in the car. I am floored that it would be her."
A neighbor, Erin Jackson, said she believed Carey lived in the Stamford home with the baby and the girl's father. Asked if she believed Carey suffered from a mental illness, Jackson said "absolutely."
Jackson recognized the black Infinity sedan seen on television from the incident as resembling Carey's car. She said the woman's tires recently were slashed in an incident in Connecticut.
Police, including SWAT and bomb disposal units, surrounded Carey's home in Stamford Thursday evening. Police there said they were awaiting a search warrant from Washington, though 50 people from the apartment building already were being evacuated for the night.
Cops said Carey eluded police after they stopped her car and drew their guns. When she continued to flee, she drove "very erratically, very dangerously," said Senate Sergeant at Arms Terrance Gainer.
She ultimately rammed a police car and was shot by police without exiting the car, Gainer said. Two officers, one from the Capitol Police and one from Secret Service, were injured in the incident.
No weapons were found in the car, police said.

Breaking: Reports of shots fired on Capitol Hill
(CNN) -- Police are reacting to reports of shots fired on Capitol Hill in Washington. CNN's Ted Barrett reports an order was given over the Capitol speaker system to shelter in place because of an active shooter situation.
There were reports of multiple gunshots near the Senate Hart Office Building. People were seen running, and staffers are being instructed to shelter in place.
Capitol Police sent out the following advisory to staffers:
"SHELTER IN PLACE. Gunshots have been reported on Capitol Hill requiring all occupants in all House Office Buildings to shelter in place. Close, lock and stay away from external doors and windows. Take annunciators, Go Kits and escape hoods; and move to the innermost part of the office away from external doors or windows. If you are not in your office, take shelter in the nearest office, check in with your OEC and wait for USCP to clear the incident. No one will be permitted to enter or exit the building until directed by USCP. All staff should monitor the situation. Further information will be provided as it becomes available."

Several people, including a police officer, have been injured in a shooting outside the Hart Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill.
Police were reportedly pursuing a female suspect, who was apprehended and shot dead.
The suspect is believed to have tried to break through White House security barricades, before driving off towards the Capitol. Once there, shots were fired as the driver attempted to flee.
Authorities have lifted the brief security lockdown that was initially in place after the incident.
US officials said the shooting appeared to be an isolated incident and that terrorism was not suspected.
The Hart Senate Office Building is 2.4 kilometres from the Washington Navy Yard - where, less than three weeks ago, a lone gunmen got into the building and killed 12 people.
