Freedom fighter sworn in as East Timor president
East Timor is celebrating 10 years of independence. The country now has good relations with its two crucial neighbours. Indonesia is no longer seen as a threat and Australian troops on Timorese soil are no longer thought necessary. Taur Matan Ruak's task as president, then, is to oversee the next stage of East Timor's transition: from peace, to relative prosperity. And on Saturday former freedom fighter Taur Matan Ruak was sworn-in as the new President. Al Jazeera's Andrew Thomas reports from Sydney.

East Timor's President Returns Home
CHEN: East Timorese president Jose Ramos-Horta is back in Dili today. He has been recovering in an Australia hospital after a failed assassination attempt in February. Here's more. STORY: President Jose Ramos-Horta was welcomed with a military parade and thousands of people as he stepped out of the plane at Dili's airport. The president smiled as the crowd shouted "Viva president Ramos-Horta." The 58-year-old Nobel laureate was shot and critically wounded in a rebel attack at his home in Dili on February 11. The early-morning attack on the president was launched by gunmen loyal to rebel leader Alfredo Reinado. [Jose Ramos-Horta, East Timorese President]: "But I also want to commend the political parties, the members of the government, particularly the prime minister, who worked as the interim president with the leadership of our armed forces and police." The president also demanded rebel army leader Gastao Salsinha to surrender. [Jose Ramos-Horta, East Timorese President]: "Already the majority of members of Alfredo and Salsinha have surrendered with their weapons without firing a shot. So I commend them for that. Because even though I was shot, I was almost killed, I didn't want Mr. Salsinha or any East Timorese to lose their life." President Ramos-Horta has vowed to maintain stability and deal with the ongoing problem of food shortages in East Timor, by using the oil and gas revenue to buy rice from Vietnam.

East Timor President Injured in Attack
East Timor's president arrives in Australia after an assassination attempt. And now the latest news from East Timor where the President Jose Ramos-Horta has been shot by rebel soldiers today. The president was rushed to a military base in Dili for surgery. But because his injuries were critical he was transferred to Australia for further medical treatment. Here's more on this developing story. STORY: The East Timor president was shot twice in the stomach during an attack on his home by rebel soldiers. A report from the medical evacuation team says Ramos-Horta was in a critical condition when he arrived in Darwin. An Australian medical official says he is stable but will undergo further surgery for two bullet wounds. Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao was also attacked in a separate incident, but escaped injury. Analysts say the assassination attempts could spark renewed violence and political chaos in the tiny nation. Australia has pledged to send more troops after the coordinated attack. Rebel leader Alfredo Reinado was killed in the attack and an East Timor soldier was also seriously wounded. Horta won a Nobel Peace Prize for his struggle for independence from Indonesian occupation. But Asia's youngest nation has been struggling to claw its way back to stability after plunging into chaos in 2006.

Presidential election in East Timor
www.euronews.com Polls have closed in East Timor as the country elects a new president in what is expected to be a three-way race. Twelve candidates are standing, but one of the favourites for this largely ceremonial role is incumbent José Ramos-Horta. He is a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize and survived an assassination attempt in 2008. Former military chief Taur Matan Ruak, who is backed by prime minister Xanana Gusmao's Congress for the Reconstruction of East Timor (CNRT) party, is also expected to do well in the first round of the ballot. The third contender is former parliamentary speaker Francisco Lu-Olo Guterres, head of the opposition Fretilin party, who lost a run-off to Ramos-Horta in 2007. With a population of 1.1 million, East Timor became independent in 1999 after 24 years of occupation by Indonesia. There are United Nations forces stationed there til the end of the year. If no candidate wins a 51 percent majority, the top two will face each in a run-off vote next month. Find us on: Youtube bit.ly Facebook www.facebook.com Twitter twitter.com

East Timor's President Criticizes Security
Anna Chan: East Timorese president Jose Ramos-Horta is criticizing the UN for not sending troops in sooner. He believes his assailants could have been caught if international troops promptly locked down the capital. Here's more. President Ramos-Horta recalled his assassination attempt last month. [Jose Ramos-Horta, East Timorese President]: "The gunman was there hiding near my gate and he took aim at me and I was just lucky that as I saw him, I turned around to run and that is why he didn't hit me in the chest on the left side, but hit me on the leg on the right side." Rebel soldiers ambushed Ramos-Horta during an early morning walk on February 11, and also attacked Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao the same day. Ramos-Horta was shot several times in the attack while Gusmao escaped unharmed. [Jose Ramos-Horta, East Timorese President]: "I think if Australian-led forces could have promptly surrounded the entire town, close all the exits, using helicopters, sending immediately elements to my house, they would have captured them within hours, because for hours after the attack on my house they were still in the hills around my house." But the president did not blame Australian forces for allowing the rebels to escape, saying they only reacted to the request from United Nations. Ramos-Horta hopes to return home next month.

He faces off against former military commander Taur Matan Ruak for the top job of Asia's newest and poorest nation. Speaking to media, Lu Olo was confident of his victory and ability to lead. [FRANCISCO GUTERRES "LU OLO", PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE ]: "I believe I will win and what I promise during the campaign period I will carry out after being elected, and I will be president for all the people of East Timor to ensure peace and prosperity, development and cooperation with other state agencies." East Timor weighs cost of integration
One year after elections, and 12 years after the riots that followed a crucial referendum, the central debate in East Timor is how best to maintain a still-fragile peace. Armed groups were responsible for massacres in the wake of that vote for independence from neighbouring Indonesia in 1999 that claimed 1500 lives and forced more than 250000 - one-fourth of East Timor's population - to flee the country. Many of the men held responsible for the violence - former members of the pro-Indonesian militias - are still living in camps with their families in West Timor, in Indonesia. Explaining why they have still not returned to East Timor, Eurico Guterrez, a former militia leader, says: "They threaten us: they say we shouldn't come back because we betrayed our country, that we chose to be Indonesian so we don't deserve to return home." But these militia members stranded in Indonesia now have an unlikely ally: East Timor's president, Jose Ramos Horta, who has come out in favour of amnesties. Ramos-Horta told Al Jazeera that people in East Timor should "let bygones be bygones", although many are calling for the perpetrators of the violence to be tried in court. As Andrew Thomas reports from Dili, East Timor's capital. the big question now facing the young country is: Justice, no matter what the consequences, or integration, whatever the cost?
