Arthur Askey - Hello Playmates
Big Hearted Arthur they called him! Here he is in full flood before an enthusiastic theatre audience, relating his story from the early days as a performer in Seaside Concert Parties, through Radio, Films, Variety, Television, Musical Plays and countless Recordings of mostly novelty songs - a couple of which are included in this excerpt from a live stage appearance in 1978. From the 1920s until shortly before his death in 1982, Arthur Askey remained one of Britain's best loved entertainers.

Rare clip of Gracie Fields on Arthur Askey's 'This Is Your Life' -1974
A recently discovered clip of Gracie Fields paying tribute to the great entertainer 'Arthur Askey' on Christmas Day, 1974. Gracie, then aged 76, talks about her time in France with Arthur as members of ENSA. She doesn't mention in this edition going for lunch with Maurice Chevalier here, but when she told the story on 'Arthur's 70th Birthday' in 1970, she discusses dining with Chevalier -and even sings a version of Arthur's 'I'm A Busy Bee'! Many thanks to Tony Lee of www.bigredbook.info for this video clip, and the other clip of Gracie with Alberto Semprini. Check out his website and Facebook page, it is a great, ever-growing resource of one of TV's longest running entertainment programmes. The audio MAY be out of sync with the video. This is a problem occured during the transfer of the film to Windows Movie Maker, and is a problem I'm not sure how to get rid of. The original file is perfect though. Visit 'The Dame Gracie Fields Appreciation Society' on Facebook for all your Gracie needs!

Arthur Askey (1900-1982)
Arthur Bowden Askey CBE (6th June 1900 - 16th November 1982) was a prominent English comedian and actor. Askey's humour owed much to the playfulness of the characters he portrayed, his improvising, and his use of catchphrases, as parodied by the Arthur Atkinson character in The Fast Show. His catchphrases included "Hello playmates!", "I thank you all" (pronounced "Ay-Thang-Yaw'll"), and "Before your very eyes".

"I Wanna Banana" (Arthur Askey, 1942)
Double entendre and back again with Arthur Askey and the lads--part of Britain's home front "Band Wagon" show from WWII. Music of Tolchard Evans--lyrics by Ralph Butler. I WANNA BANANA A sailor and his sweetheart were walking hand in hand, The day that he was sailing for a foreign land, Said he, "Oh tell me, darling, what shall I bring you back?" She came a little closer and then she said, "Oh, Jack... I wanna banana, I wanna banana, bring me back a banana sailor boy! I wanna banana, I wanna banana, That's the thing I really should enjoy. You can tell the captain, you can tell the crew, I don't want a monkey or a cockatoo, I wanna banana, I wanna banana, bring me back a banana sailor boy! I wanna banana, I wanna banana, That's the thing I really should enjoy. You brought me back an orange, it gave me great delight, You brought me back a lemon, and you squeezed me tight, You brought me back a grapefruit, I paid you with a kiss, Now, when you're in Jamaica, please remember this: I wanna banana, I wanna banana, bring me back a banana sailor boy! I wanna banana, I wanna banana, That's the thing I really should enjoy. You brought me back a straw hat that came from Panama, A pair of coral earrings, back from Zanzibar, Fine Oriental trinkets are beautiful no doubt, But when you're in Jamaica, please cut the knick-knacks out! I wanna banana, I wanna banana, bring me back a banana sailor boy! I wanna banana, I wanna banana, That's the thing I really should enjoy!"
