Radical Cartography is how I speak: Philippe Rekacewicz at TEDxArendal
Radical Cartography is challenging conventional views on international politics and economics, environmental issues, and conflict-related conditions. The French journalist and cartographer Philippe Rekacewicz, live at Narestø, Sørlandet and has been at the forefront of cartography as a journalistic genre and form of expression that (de/re)construct categories from which to understand the world and the structures of power that inhabit it.
Rekacewicz practice uses data as a means for social awareness and involvement. Philippe teach at universities, work for the French newspaper Le Monde Diplomatique and were lead cartographer at GRID-Arendal for many years.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

This is a visualization of US expansion in North America from 1700 to 1900, seen through changes in the spatial distribution of post offices.
Data from the USPS Postmaster Finder, with lat/long coordinates extracted from placenames through correlation with the USGS Geographic Names Information System.

Water in the Anthropocene
Water in the Anthropocene is a 3-minute film charting the global impact of humans on the water cycle.
Evidence is growing that our global footprint is now so significant we have driven Earth into a new geological epoch — the Anthropocene.
Human activities such as damming and agriculture are changing the global water cycle in significant ways.
The data visualisation was commissioned by the Global Water Systems Project for a major international conference (Water in the Anthropocene, Bonn, Germany, 21-24 May, 2013).
http://conference2013.gwsp.org
As datasets build upon one another, the film charts Earth's changing global water cycle, why it is changing, and what this means for the future. The vertical spikes that appear in the film represent the 48,000 large dams that have been built.
The film was produced by Globaïa and the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme.

Digital Cartography
By Andrew Ellis, Alexander Wang
Students at the Dynamic Media Institute
Massachusetts College of Art and Design
Digital Cartography is a short documentary film on the transition of maps into their digital form. In this film we speak with programmer and mapmaker Jeffrey Warren from the MIT Media Lab and Dietmar Offenhuber from SENSEable City Lab at MIT. We explore the cultural, economic and technical aspects of mapmaking and how they affect the way we communicate with one another.
In our interviews with Jeffrey and Dietmar we learn about the social and geographical ramifications of building maps and how designers can implement their literacy in communication design to explore different avenues for mapping. Participatory mapping such as Open Street Maps and psychogeography and the virtual dérive are some of the themes discussed around the history and future of mapping in the digital age. Jeffrey gives us a demonstration on low cost arial photography using a helium balloon and a consumer digital camera to stitch photos onto google maps.
