French Guiana - magnet for immigrants
French Guiana, an overseas region of France on the northern Atlantic coast of South America, appears to be a magnet for immigrants, both legal and illegal, from all over the world. The 2000km-long frontier of French Guiana - which consists of a single department - is bordered between Suriname and Brazil by rivers, making its borders porous and difficult to police. These factors, as well as what local politician Paulin Brune calls "liberal" French immigration laws, have made the region a gateway to Europe. Al Jazeera's Anand Naidoo reports from Cayenne, French Guiana's capital.

Martinique
Martinique is an island in the eastern Caribbean Sea, with a land area of 1128 km2 (436 sq mi). It is an overseas region of France, consisting of a single overseas department. To the northwest lies Dominica, to the south St Lucia, and to the southeast Barbados. As with the other overseas departments, Martinique is one of the twenty-six regions of France (being an overseas region) and an integral part of the Republic. As part of France, Martinique is part of the European Union, and its currency is the euro. Its official language is French, although many of its inhabitants also speak Antillean Creole (Créole Martiniquais). Martinique is pictured on all euro banknotes, on the reverse at the bottom of each note, right of the Greek ΕΥΡΩ (EURO) next to the denomination.

NATIONAL ANTHEM OF Réunion
Réunion, is an island, located in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar, about 200 km (130 miles) south west of Mauritius, the nearest island. Administratively, Réunion is one of the overseas départements of France. Like the other overseas departments, Réunion is also one of the twenty-six regions of France (being an overseas region) and an integral part of the Republic with the same status as those situated on the European mainland. Réunion is an outermost region of the European Union, and thus the currency used is the euro. In fact, due to its location in a time zone to the east of Europe, Réunion was the first region in the world to use the euro, and the first ever purchase using the euro occurred at 12.01 am, when the mayor of Saint-Denis René-Paul Victoria bought a bag of lychees at a market.

Martinique exudes a distinctly French feeling in the excellence of its Caribbean cuisine, the beauty of its language, the grace of its streets and gardens. Christianity in the Middle East - Part 1 of 3
Overseas Council's (www.overseas.org) region of the Middle East encompasses the Arabic-speaking nations of the Middle East and North Africa, as well as Sudan, Turkey, Iran, Israel and Afghanistan. Despite the dominance of Islam, strong and ancient communities of Christians exist throughout the region. While these churches based in the ancient Christian population of the Middle East function openly in most parts of the Middle East, churches made up of converts from Islam face continual challenges. In most countries, legal penalties for religious conversion make public declaration of faith nearly impossible. Even in relatively open nations like Lebanon, social and family pressures make open conversion difficult or impossible. Even with these difficulties, it is estimated that the "Hidden" Christian population in the region is growing and now numbers nearly 200000.

Obama Visit Myanmar as Part of First Postelection Overseas Trip to Asia
WASHINGTON — President Obama will make Asia his first overseas destination since his re-election, with a trip this month that is to include a historic visit to Myanmar and underscore his desire to reorient American foreign policy more toward the Pacific during his second term. Doug Mills/The New York Times President Obama will attend an economic meeting in Cambodia and will add to the trip visits to Myanmar and Thailand. Read All Comments (74) » The White House announced on Thursday that the newly re-elected Mr. Obama would head to an annual international economic summit meeting in Cambodia and stop in Thailand and Myanmar. No sitting American president has visited either Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, or Cambodia, allowing Mr. Obama to reinforce his commitment to the region. The trip fits into a larger geopolitical chess game by the Obama administration, which has sought to counter rising Chinese assertiveness by engaging its neighbors. China was Myanmar's main international patron during the final years of military rule there, and the long-isolated country's opening to the West comes amid a popular backlash against Beijing's perceived influence and its role in extracting natural resources ...

Thailand, Indonesia tipped as top hotel markets
Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels has tipped Thailand and Indonesia to be the next hot hotel investment markets in the Asia Pacific region. Tom Oakden, Jones Lang Lasalles's Executive Vice President of Investment Sales, says his company sees rising revenue per available room (or revPAR), healthy investor interest, and rising travel demand in both countries as well as in the Maldives. For Thailand, Jones Lang Lasalle noted that revPAR is climbing in Bangkok despite new hotel supply, while resort markets like Phuket are also exhibiting stronger income growth potential. The company also noted that Thailand is becoming increasingly attractive to overseas investors, having once been dominated by domestic players. In terms of Indonesia, Jones Lang Lasalle said the focus of overseas investment is now spreading from Bali and Jakarta into other regions. A healthy influx of Chinese visitors to the Maldives was cited as one of the main factors influencing the Indian Ocean island nation's attractiveness, along with relaxed government policies on overseas investment.

Globe Trekker - South East China
South East China has always been outward-looking. Many of China's mariners and traders have come from this region. Today, it is again a major center for trade. It has also been the source of much migration. The vast majority of overseas Chinese can trace their ancestry to one or more of the three provinces. In any Western country, most people of Chinese descent can trace their roots to Guangdong, and the commonest style of Chinese food in the West is Cantonese (Guangdong) food. Nearly all Taiwanese trace their ancestry to Fujian. In Southeast Asia, most Chinese immigrants came from either Fujian or Guangdong. Hainanese are not as numerous, but also form a sizeable proportion of overseas Chinese populations, particularly in Singapore and Malaysia. Regions: Fujian Province, Guangdong Province, Hainan Province.

From Regional to Global Players: The Emergence of Asian Firms in the Global Economy
Speaker(s): Professor Henry Wai-chung Yeung Recorded on 26 January 2012 in Hong Kong Theatre, Clement House. In this lecture, Henry Wai-chung Yeung will aim to explain how a number of leading business firms from Asian newly industrialized economies (NIEs) of Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan are articulated into global production networks and become major players in their respective market niches. Drawing upon a triangular analytical framework and original empirical data, he will seek to explain the complex relationships between the dynamic articulation of these leading Asian firms into different global production networks and their simultaneous upgrading from typical followers to market leaders. He will argue that the interplay between corporate strategies and home base advantages within the context of changing global production networks can offer a better explanation of the differentiated competitive outcomes of these Asian firms. He will conclude the lecture with some implications for theory and policy in relation to corporate development in Asian economies. Born in Guangzhou, China, Henry Wai-chung Yeung emigrated with my family to Hong Kong in 1979 moving to Singapore in 1988. He graduated with BA First Class Honours in Geography from the National University of Singapore and obtained his Ph.D. from the School of Geography, University of Manchester in England in 1995, returning to Singapore to start his career at the Department of Geography, National ...
