KMTP-TV, channel 32, is an independent, non-commercial television station located in San Francisco, California, USA. Owned and operated by the Minority Television Project, KMTP's has its main studio and offices in Palo Alto, California, and transmitter situated atop Mount Sutro.

KMTP airs a large amount of multilingual, ethnic programming. The station produces and broadcast a daily news show, 5 Day News, and also broadcasts programming from Deutsche Welle TV, Russia Today TV, and the Classic Arts Showcase. KMTP is one of the few non-PBS-affiliated public television stations in the United States, and one of two such stations in the San Francisco Bay Area (The other is KCSM-TV in San Mateo).

History[link]

The station on channel 32 began commercially as one of the first UHF TV stations in the United States in 1954 as KSAN-TV, owned by the Patterson family, operators of KSAN radio, showing an amalgam of boxing and wrestling matches, medical conferences, and old movies. The station went off the air in 1958.

The TV station was purchased by Metromedia in 1968, when the call sign was moved to an FM station and the station re-christened KNEW-TV, to match its co-owned KNEW radio and to compliment Metromedia's flagship station in New York, WNEW-TV (Now Fox-owned WNYW-TV). KNEW-TV ran the syndicated Metromedia talk shows and variety programming of such stars as shock-talker Joe Pyne, and others.

This format was unsuccessful, and by 1970 channel 32 was given to leading public broadcaster KQED (channel 9) and re-christened once again, this time as KQEC, a member station of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). KQED held onto the station until 1988 when the FCC revoked the license, ruling that it had been off the air too much to remain in the hands of the KQED ownership (KQED kept KQEC off the air for most of 1972 through 1977, and then again for several months in 1979-80), and reassigned the license to Minority Television Project, one of the challengers of the KQEC license.[1]

Controversy[link]

In 2004, the FCC levied a $10,000 fine against KMTP for showing paid commercials on a station with an educational license.[2] While it is commonplace for PBS and similar stations to show underwriters' messages that resemble commercials, it is illegal for educationally licensed stations, like KMTP, to show advertisements that do not meet the standards for underwriting announcements.[3],[4] KMTP appealed the decision in 2005, but the fine was upheld, prompting KMTP to file a lawsuit against the FCC in U.S. District Court the following year.^[1]

In suing the FCC, KMTP felt it was unfairly penalized by the FCC's rules concerning underwriting and not taking into account foreign language broadcasting. There are a number of independent non-PBS public television stations in the United States; other such stations include KCSM-TV in nearby San Mateo, KCET in downstate Los Angeles, the WNVC/WNVT MHz Networks group in Northern Virginia, WNYE-TV in New York City and WYBE in Philadelphia. The underwriting rules do not take into account foreign languages and the variations in pronunciations and meanings. KMTP carried out research to find out what the public interpreted a commercial to be. Using a numerical grading system certain aspects of a video clip were found by the public to "feel" like a commercial or not like a commercial. These findings were presented to the FCC as it did not depend on any particular words or phrases which can be misinterpreted when foreign languages are used. The FCC rejected KMTP's attempt to clarify the underwriting rules leaving KMTP with no choice but to take the matter to the courts.

The ultimate outcome of KMTP's lawsuit could have far-reaching affects as it could re-define the very definition of what a public television station is. One of the main points is freedom of political speech, as the current underwriting rules have a chilling effect on KMTP accepting political spots as they could be interpreted as violating the current rules when broadcast in a foreign language. The Ninth Circuit Court was due to make its initial brief in March 2010 ^[2].

On April 12th 2012 the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled on two of the issues raised by KMPT's suit. The court ruled that non-commercial stations can air advertisements for both candidates and political position statements. The 1981 federal law was found to be violating free speech. This was a partial victory for KMPT, as it did not address the basic issue of how commercials differ from the sponsorships that most public stations depend on for finical support ^[3].

Meklit Hadero (aka "Meklit") is a singer and songwriter based in San Francisco, California. She is known for her soulful performing style, and for combining jazz, folk, and East African influences in her music. Born in Ethiopia, Meklit was raised in the U.S. and attended college at Yale, where she studied political science.^[1]

Shortly after graduation, Meklit moved to San Francisco and became immersed in the city's thriving arts scene. "[Meklit] is an artistic giant in the early stages," wrote a reporter from the San Francisco Chronicle after witnessing an early performance in the city's Mission District. "She sings of fragility, hope and self-empowerment, and exudes all three. What's irresistible, above all, is her cradling, sensuous, gentle sound. She is stunning."^[2]

Named a TED Global Fellow in 2009^[3], Meklit has served as an artist-in-residence at New York University, the De Young Museum, and the Red Poppy Art House. Currently a fellow of the Wildflowers Institute, Meklit has also completed musical commissions for the San Francisco Foundation and for theatrical productions staged by Brava! For Women in the Arts. She is the founder of the Arba Minch Collective, a group of Ethiopian artists in diaspora devoted to nurturing ties to their homeland through collaborations with both traditional and contemporary artists there.

Two songs by Meklit Hadero were chosen by writer/director Tamar Halpern for her film Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life - “You and the Rain” and “Walk Up”.

Meklit has released two records to date. The first was an eight-song EP entitled Eight Songs (2008), the second her full-length LP, On a Day Like This.... Recorded at San Francisco's Closer Studios and produced by Eric Moffat and Unsound Recording, On A Day Like This... was released by San Francisco's Porto Franco Records in April 2010. Hailed by Filter magazine for "[combining] New York jazz with West Coast folk and African flourishes, all bound together by Hadero's beguiling voice."^[4] the record also gained feature stories on Meklit from NPR^[5], PBS^[6], and National Geographic.^[7]

Innocent Ujah Idibia (born in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria), or better known by his stage name 2Face Idibia, is a Nigerian singer-songwriter, actor and record producer. He was a member of the defunct R&B/hip hop group Plantashun Boyz.

Early life[link]

2Face Idibia was born Innocent Ujah Idibia in Jos, Nigeria. He is from the Okpokwu local government area and from the Idoma ethnic group in the southern part of Benue State, in central Nigeria.^[1] He attended Mount Saint Gabriel's Secondary School in Makurdi, Benue State. He schooled briefly in the Institute of Management & Technology, Enugu (IMT), where he did his preliminary National Diploma course in business administration and management. While attending IMT he performed at school organized shows and parties, as well as other regional schools such as the University of Nigeria and Enugu State University of Science & Technology. He would not graduate college.

Career[link]

While attending IMT, 2face Idibia started composing and singing jingles at the GB Fan Club at Enugu State Broadcasting Services (ESBS) in 1996. He would move to Lagos and started performing with fellow rapper BlackFace, forming the Plantashun Boyz. He had met BlackFace while attending IMT.^[2] He started calling himself "2Face" in 1996. He cited the reasoning as "trying to demarcate my personal life with my business life.^[3]

In 2006, his song "African Queen" was used in the soundtrack for the film Phat Girlz, which was released internationally.^[4] The Plantashun Boyz came together briefly in 2007 to record an album which they titled Plan B.^[2] He also released a promotion album in 2008 releasing the single, "Enter the Place". Problems with album distribution in 2007 caused as shift of the release date of the album from 2008 to 2009. Tuface released two singles from the international version of his Unstoppable album and is the first Nigerian artist to have an appropriately priced^[5] international album.^[6]

2face Idibia released The Unstoppable International Edition album in 2010. For the album, he won two awards at the 2010 SoundCity Music Video Awards.^[7] He also won the Channel O Music Video Awards Best African Western award and the MTV Africa Music Awards for Best Male and Artist of the year.^[8] Upon leaving the music label Kennis Music, he set up his own record label known as Hypertek Entertainment.^[9] He is part of the Sony All African One8 Project alongside seven other musicians across Africa recording a single with R.Kelly and Prince Lee titled "Hands Across the World".^[10] He is the first non-Liberian to become an honorary member of the Liberian music society in recognition for his outstanding contribution to the growth of music in Africa.

Personal life[link]

2Face is known for his narrow escapes from death. He had a close shave with death three times, at different locations and times, including gun shots.^[6][11]

On May 2, 2012, 2Face Idibia and Annie Macaulay, a Nollywood actress, got married in Lagos, in a private ceremony.^[12][13] 2face announced his marriage via his twitter page. He has a child with Annie Macaulay, and five children from previous relations.

Philanthropy[link]

2Face has established an NGO called 2Face Idibia Reach-Out Foundation.^[14] which motto is service to humanity. In 2009, 2Face was appointed as ambassador the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control.^[15] He released a song "Man Unkind" in order to raise awareness on the menace of fake and sub-standard food and drug products in Nigeria.^[16] In 2009, he was presented with the prestigious International Youth Ambassador for Peace Summit and the Nigeria Youth Merit Award by the National Youth Council of Nigeria in recognition of his contributions to youth development in Nigeria.^[17]

Donna Meistrich (born February 28, 1954) is a San Francisco wax carver, model maker, painter, sculptor, jewelry designer and animator. She is the co-creator of the Tacky People animated series with her animating partner, co-creator Terry Blumberg.

Early life[link]

Meistrich was born in Brooklyn, New York to Syd and Pearl Meistrich and was the oldest of three children. Growing up on Long Island with her two younger brothers, she graduated Northport High School in 1972. She also attended the Academy of Art College from 1974 to 1978 in San Francisco, where she majored in illustration and graphic design.

Artistic career[link]

Meistrich began carving wax and making models in 1974. She won first place in the Tahitian Trophy Competition for North America Earrings Division in 2004-2005.^[1] She worked in advertising and designing products as an independent designer. She worked on accounts like Harley-Davidson and Rolling Stone magazine. After leaving advertising to make jewelry professionally, she continued her education at the College of Marin.

Meistrich's work is best known in movies. She carved a ring for Jim Carrey to wear in The Truman Show. She built a Dolphin ring that was used in the movie Independence Day. She also created the mesmerizer and various spider props in the movie Wild Wild West with Will Smith.

Tacky People[link]

In 1987, Donna began developing the concept of Tacky People through her jewelry and through her figurine design. In 1978, she met Terry Blumberg at a drawing class at City College in San Francisco. The duo became instant friends and began collaborating on the Tacky People cartoon in 1988. The concept behind the Tacky People figurines was that they were characters that brought positive energy to people who bought them. The characters were designed to be outrageously tacky and make people laugh.

In the 1990s, the duo decided to turn the Tacky people into an animated series. After several aborted attempts and after building a website, the duo added the Negs. The Negs are the nemesis of the Tacky People. They live in the Land of No and represent very negative feelings.

In 2009, the project came together when the duo hired writer, Tony DiGerolamo, to write the series bible and pilot script to outline a more detailed world for the Tacky People. The pilot is currently in production.

Other work[link]

Donna continues to work in various media including wax, clay, wood, plaster, stone and cast paper. She has made master models for snow villages, porcelain objects, dolls, toys and gifts. Donna volunteers every year at the Italian Street Painting Festival creating 8'x6' chalk drawings since 1994.^[2]
