Introducing.....The European Spallation Source
Sir Patrick Stewart presents a fascinating introduction to the European Spallation Source - one of Europe's most advanced and exciting scientific projects.
For the past 2 decades Europe has been designing and planning the ESS, a major science facility that will provide the world's most intense beams of neutrons for the study of the structure and dynamics of materials at the atomic level.
ESS has been described as the Hubble telescope of neutron sources, probing deep into materials with unprecedented clarity. It will be one of the most important and prestigious scientific research facilities in the world, enabling developments as diverse and as significant as drug design....new magnetic materials for data storage...super strong, super light ceramics for engineering.... biocompatible materials for repairing our fragile bodies.......hydrogen fuel for clean transport ......innovative processes for capturing carbon.... the list is endless.
Professor Sir Patrick Stewart, OBE, Chancellor of the University of Huddersfield in the UK and world-famous Shakespearian actor and star of science-fiction films such as Star Trek and X-Men, presents the movie which was funded by ESFRI FP7 grant agreement No 202247 "NeutronSourceESS".

MULBURY [0:00 - 1:40]
The footage was shot on location in Los Angeles by the director (Richie Smyth) I created all VFX, concept art and assets.
I worked closely with the director and writer, Martin Brennan, to develop the visuals for 'Mulbury'. The project is a proof of concept for a larger feature film project, as such I had to develop everything from scratch including concept art and look of the final shots.
Software | Maya, Mari, Vray, FumeFX, Nuke, PF Track, AfterEffects, Photoshop
BRUTUS [1:44 - 1:46]
I worked in collaboration with Adam McAllister (Animator) and Priya Mistry (Character Designer, Illustrator) to create this short film. I was responsible for storyboarding, modelling, texturing, shaders, lighting, rendering, compositing.
Software | Maya, Zbrush, Vray, Nuke, AfterEffects, Photoshop
THE LABYRINTH OF LANGUAGE [1:47 - 1:48]
This short film was funded by the European commission and had to adhere to the theme of multilingualism. A team of 4 people worked on this project, Adam McAllister, Darren Porter, Alan Martin and myself, I was responsible for storyboarding, character & environment modelling, texturing, lighting, compositing and editing.
Software | Maya, Zbrush, Mental Ray, Nuke, AfterEffects, Photoshop
ELDERBEAST [1:48 - 1:50]
This was a quick personal project (one week) intended to develop a Vray pipeline for a larger animation, however I also wanted to pay homage to the concept art of the Creaturebox.com guys, Their work is a constant inspiration to me. All 3D visuals by Gerard Dunleavy, original creature concept design by Creaturebox.com

The Medieval & Renaissance Galleries
Transcript:
The V&A; created its new Medieval & Renaissance wing to house objects drawn from a wonderful collection of sacred and secular treasures spanning a period of 1300 years.
Ten new galleries opened in December 2009 at cost of £31.75 million, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and a number of generous donors.
Spread over three floors, they form an elegant, contemporary home for nearly 2000 objects that tell the story of European art and design from the fall of the Roman Empire to the end of the Renaissance
Exhibits span European art from North to South.
Among homegrown examples of sacred craftsmanship are the 12th century Beckett Casket and early English stained glass crafted for Winchester College.
Masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance include works by Della Robbia, Donatello and Michelangelo.
Leonardo da Vinci’s’s precious and awe-inspiring notebooks are also on display
In 2002, the V&A; began reshaping the South East corner of its Cromwell Road site into a place where the Medieval & Renaissance collections could be displayed in a chronological sequence for the first time
Architects MUMA were commissioned to reconfigure this wing of Aston Webb’s monumental 1909 building from the inside out. Their scheme restored and enhanced existing galleries and transformed circulation by adding a dramatic top lit hub coaxed out of forgotten in-between spaces.
Meanwhile, curators were moving and re-housing hundreds of objects and bringing a new accessibility and coherence to their presentation.
And conservators were spending thousands of hours restoring and preparing sculptures, paintings, architecture, textiles and other artworks for display.
.
The passion driving all these experts and specialists was a desire to give this magnificent collection a setting that it deserves, a setting that brings all the V&A;’s Medieval and Renaissance treasures to life.
In each of the ten galleries, objects are placed and considered within their original social and cultural context.
So Splendour and Society, the gallery devoted to the decoration of a Renaissance home, overlooks the courtyard and fountains of its neighbour, ‘The Renaissance City’, from the Treviso Balcony, an original marble carved balcony dating from 1490.
The engaging presentation caters for visitors who wish to follow the whole art and design story from Medieval times to the Renaissance, as well as for those who just want to focus on part of it.
Each gallery tells its own story. The first, Faith and Empires, examines how Christian art forms evolved from 300 to 1250. The theme is illustrated with sacred artefacts such as the sensuous Gloucester Candlestick
The Rise of Gothic takes up the story, showing how the gothic style emerged in 13th century Europe, alongside concepts of chivalry and heraldry. Intimate displays of French Stained Glass, carved ivory book covers and Giovanni Pisano’s exquisite Crucified Christ illustrate the narrative.
The third gallery, Devotion and Display, shows religion’s impact on daily life, examining public art commissioned as ‘good works’ beside a private world of religious devotions from all over Europe. Objects include beautiful reliquaries and an altarpiece by the German, Master Bertram, that vividly depicts scenes from the Book of Revelation.
In Noble Living, Medieval history bursts out into a secular world, where rich nobles and wealthy merchants hunt, dine and court. It focuses on luxury goods found in the grand houses of the rich, such as the Devonshire Hunting Tapestry, which fills an entire wall. Nearby, is the gorgeous Merode cup, made at the court of Burgundy, one of 15th century Europe’s most opulent.
Donatello and the Making of Art showcases a wonderful collection by15th Century Italy’s most influential sculptor and his followers. Donatello’s famous Chellini Madonna and his poignant Ascension relief share space with other Italian masterpieces of the era like Carlo Crivelli’s highly decorative Virgin and Child.
Renaissance Art and ideas 1400-1550 looks at the preoccupations that underpinned Renaissance art: the fascination with antiquity, for example. Its highlights include an immaculately restored Belgian tapestry illustrating the Trojan War.
At the centre of the gallery is a display of a scholar’s study, its ceiling roundels created by Luca Della Robbia for the home of Piero de Medici
The World of Goods gallery reveals how Renaissance designers took ideas from around Europe and beyond. Highlights include a Medici flask from 1580 which borrows design inspiration from Ancient Rome, the Near East and China
Rich domestic furnishings form the setting for Splendour and Society, a gallery exploring social ritual and luxury goods. Among the jewellery, furniture and armour are an exquisite 16th century Salamander pendant and the Burghley Nef, a Nautilus shell transformed into an elaborate salt cellar.
The Wing’s biggest gallery, the Renaissance City houses some of

First Lady Michelle Obama’s Event
at Howard University
Washington, D.C.
January 19, 2011
SIDNEY A. RIBEAU, President, Howard University: Our University takes pride in our historic preparation of students for involvement in the world community. Today we’re building on more than 142 years of commitment to our international connections and working vigorously to ensure that we expand our international footprint so that every, I say, every Howard student has an international experience. [applause & cheering] Let’s hear it for that.
This is one of our institutional priorities and one that we will fulfill. Many of our students have traveled or are studying abroad through programs sponsored by their units and departments. In addition, our Ralph J. Bunche International Affairs Center remains the hub for a variety of academic and public affairs programs.
I am happy to report that last year, 17 of our Howard MBA students spent two weeks studying in China as a part of their global business environment course. This is only one of several programs connecting our student and faculty to their Chinese counterparts.
We want to build on these successes. We are delighted therefore that we are joined today by the Ambassador Chen, the wife of the People’s Republic of China Ambassador to the United States. We at Howard are happy that we can play a small part in helping the President and First Lady host China for this state visit. Ladies and gentlemen please give a warm Howard University welcome to Ambassador Chen [applause & cheering]
CHEN NAIQING, Wife of Chinese Ambassador to the United States: Thank you. Thank you very much. Honorable Michelle Obama, the First Lady. Mr. President Sidney Ribeau, Assistant Secretary Ann Stock, ladies and gentlemen, friends, it’s my great honor to join the first lady and others in today’s panel discussion.
Let me first extend my sincere thanks to the First Lady and Howard University for hosting this important event during President Hu Jintao’s state visit to the United States. It highlights the gratifying progress we have achieved in the cultural and people to people contact between our two nations. It also shows and reassures all of us that the torch of friendship is in good hands and will be handed down to younger generations like you. [applause]
The educational exchanges between China and the United States have a long history. In 1854 the first Chinese student came to Yale University to study. Subsequently quite a large number of Chinese youth followed his footsteps. They later returned to China and became the pioneers and trailblazers in their respective field of studies.
As early as in 1870 Harvard University opened the Chinese course and has since produced many prominent scholars on China studies.
In October 1978, the two countries signed, MOU, on educational exchanges, just before the establishment of formal diplomatic relations.
In December the same year as a result, the first group of 52 Chinese students arrived in Washington, D.C. and educational exchanges began to flourish.
Since then, educational exchanges have grown and made some really remarkable progress.
In 1989, China for the first time became the number one source of foreign students in the United States and has stayed within the top two ever since. In 2010 there will be in total some 127,000 Chinese students in the United States. And the number of American students in China has also been increasing very rapidly. It reached almost 20,000 in 2009. The second largest in foreign students in China. At present we face some great opportunities to bring our educational collaboration to greater depth.
When President Obama visited China in November 2009, he announced the initiative that the United States will send 100,000 students to China in the following four years.
This initiative has been written into the joint statement. In May 2010 the first meeting of China, US high level consultation mechanism for people to people exchanges was held in Beijing.
The two sides launched a series of educational programs.
For example China will send 10,000 students here for doctorate studies in the next four years. And about 10,000 American students will go to China for training courses under the Chinese Bridge program. We look forward to working closely with the United States to make sure that these programs are implemented smoothly as expected and bring our educational exchanges to a higher level. [applause]
Ladies and gentlemen to take forward the 21st Century China - US partnership that features mutual respect and mutual benefit would not be possible without the involvement and support from our people, particularly the young people. I sincerely hope that your experience of studying or working in China will stay with you long after you return home. And you will continue to reach out to China as much as you can. And engage in efforts and deeper understanding and friendship between
