Fine Gold Prospecting in the Glacial Till 1117872
Visit: www.prweb.com If you live on the North Eastern coast of the US in an area that does not have natural gold deposits, probably the best chance you have to pan gold is in areas where the glaciers dumped their trash. Well, back to some trash is other peoples treasure, and thats what we have with what the glaciers dumped on us. It can give you a chance to try out the gold prospecting hobby near your home before venturing off to a gold bearing region. In southwestern PA and Eastern Ohio we have an opportunity to go looking for these glacial deposits that are known to contain Fine Gold, Raw Diamonds and small Platinum. All of these are very fun and profitable to find. How did it get here? Well it really did not have a choice. It was pushed with an unimaginable force from Canada and then dumped in our backyard. In this area we were impacted by at least 3 main glacial periods. The Wisconsian, Illinoian and the Kansan periods came through and left us some fine gold to play with. Most of these 3 periods had numerous advances and retreats, so the maps will give a better idea of where to look. The best place I have found to get good information and maps is from the US government. They have a great map and information booklets available on there pa web site. It can be found at sure to look around while your there and download and print the books and maps that interest you. The Pennsylvania Glacial Deposit map can be found at only difference in finding the gold compared to areas ...

Sedimentary March - Parent Material [Music Video for my Environ. Sci. Class]
This is my final product of many hours of recording toil and work for my mini MTV behind the music skit revolving around a soil band. Anyways I made a full mini-music video for the hell of it to edit in some of the scenes. Hope you find it informative :) Lyrics: Glacial Till, a good mix of sand clay and silt. Ohhhhhhh... Glacial Lacustrine, at the bottom of a lake it must have been, Settled out... Glacial Outwash you're running out in these plains where you'll drain... Although it seems sometimes that we're left behind we're all in this together. From colloid, silt, and clay to lateral, and terminal moraines From under, to the top of the glacier We. Will. March. x4

Felony Red - A criminally delicious wine
Felony Red is a delicious red wine made in Clinton, Iowa, from 3 types of grapes including Cabernet and Norton. Made by Wide River Winery (www.wideriverwinery.com), it is the driest of their wines, having a robust, peppery flavor, it's a red table wine that is delectable w steak and candlelight.
The vineyard of Wide River Winery is located along the Mississippi. It's a beautiful wooded area with a lovely view of the Mississippi at its widest point (5 miles across).

Felony Red is yummy!
Here's more about Iowa's Wine Industry:
Iowa's Wine Heritage
Iowa has a long, rich history as a grape and wine producer. As was true for most states in the Midwest, Iowa's pioneer families found that some wild native grapes where already growing in Iowa when they arrived. One of the earliest historical references to Iowa grapes is found in the book History of Western Iowa published in 1882. It states that ". . . the finest quality of wild grapes are found in great profusion. In 1867, over five hundred barrels of wine were made from these grapes and shipped to Chicago, besides large quantities which were used at home." Before long, the pioneers introduced other grape varieties to the state.
The first commercial vineyard in Iowa was planted just outside of Council Bluffs in 1857 - just eleven years after Iowa became a state. In 1893, the Council Bluffs Grape Growers Association was formed with twenty one member growers and 100 acres of grapes.
The 1900 US Agriculture Census indicates that Iowa produced nearly 7.5 million pounds of grapes and over 76 thousand gallons of farm-processed wine. Iowa ranked sixth in U.S. grape production in 1919 with more that 12 million pounds. The Council Bluffs area continued to be a major grape producer during this period with more than 200 grape growers and over 700 acres of grapes under cultivation. Iowa's grape production peaked in 1929 with a yield of 15.8 million pounds.
The downfall of Iowa's grape and wine industry, like that in neighboring Midwest states, was attributable to several major events. The first was the severe winter of 1898-99, which will long be remembered in the upper Mississippi valley as one that caused widespread disaster for nurserymen and fruit growers. The most serious damage was done to vineyards. In many localities the destruction was complete, leaving few surviving vines - even of those varieties, which until then had survived the coldest winters. The roots of grape vines were found to be entirely killed or so badly damaged that they could not be saved.
Just as the industry was recovering, Prohibition dealt the wine industry a blow when it became the law of the land from 1920 to 1933. Seven years after Prohibition ended, the Armistice Day Blizzard of November 11, 1940 killed nearly all the orchards and vineyards in the state. The final punch (and according to some, the most lethal) was the indiscriminate use of 2,4-D herbicide on corn starting in 1944. Of the few vineyards that survived the freezing winters, Prohibition and the Armistice Day Blizzard, not a single one escaped damage from the uncontrolled drift of 2,4-D. By 1954 every vineyard in Iowa was affected. By 1997, the Agricultural Census reported only 56,536 pounds of grapes harvested in the State. Yet Iowa's grape and wine industry was not dead.
During the winter of 1999-2000 Ron Mark of Summerset Winery in Indianola, Bill Brown of Timber Hill Winery in Leon, and Paul Tabor of Tabor Family Winery at Baldwin held wine grape informational meetings across the state at three different locations. These meetings stirred the interest of other entrepreneurs and Mark, Brown, and Tabor helped lead the way to a re-emergence of Iowa's nascent wine industry. There were only two native wineries and approximately five winegrape vineyards in Iowa in 1999. In 2009, Iowa boasts 75 state-licensed wineries of which 62 are now open. In addition, there are 408 commercial vineyards with more than 1000 acres of wine grapes under cultivation.

Iowa Grapes
Several factors influence the selection of grape cultivars for Iowa’s wine industry. Among these factors are vine hardiness, fruit characteristics, ripening season, and tolerance to diseases and insects. Iowa’s grape industry has been severely damaged several times by winter storms and freezing conditions, so vine hardiness (or tolerance to cold winter temperatures and spring frosts) is a primary selection factor. There are more than two dozen grape varieties now being planted in Iowa. Nearly one third of these are American varieties with the remainder being American/French hybrids. Among the most common grapes found in Iowa vineyards are:
Catawba - This light red grape is native to North America and thought to be a natural hybrid of other indigenous varieties. It's believed to have first been found along North Carolina's Catawba River, hence its name.

For The Birds
A short sequence I animated and cleaned up for a third year graduate film, "Growing Space" by Kate Broadhurst.
I researched lots of birds flying in slow-motion and Planet Earth episodes for this which really helped as it's my first time animating a realistic animal, it was very fun to draw! (Not so fun to composit as the layers are very complicated!)
I listened to Elbow's new album, "Build a Rocket Boys!" as I did this, so their first song "For The Birds" is the reason for the title!
"The birds are the keepers of our secret
As they saw us where we lay
In the deepest grass of springtime
In a reckless guilty haze
And they wove a sweet indifference
And it settled on our skin
Till the eyes that I remembered
For the last time drew me in
The birds, though I wore your glacial patience
To a smudge of bitter dust
On the last day you embraced me
With a glistening sapling trust
Did they sing a million blessings
As they watched us slowly part?
Do they keep those final kisses
In their tiny racing hearts"

The Deep Ditch: a history lesson
As the great rock wall enters it's 3rd phase, we can see the end is finally in sight--weather permitting! This movie is a 315-degree sweep of the area. The workers have just left and the low, late-afternoon rays of sunlight are gleaming brightly and at the same time, they cast long shadows along the shore of this very beautiful lake.
Imagine what it was like in 1897 . . . or way back in the last late-glacial age when the waters of melting ice sluiced over Skillibush, grinding and depositing spent glacial till from the higher elevations. . . .
Just imagine it!
But, here we are in 2008AD, picking our way through it all: the sand, the hardpan, the small rocks, the larger stones and even a few boulders that groan in protest as we move them with heavy equipment--clearing the way, right down to the mother-ledge for our base.
