Total war
Total war is warfare that includes any and all civilian-associated resources and infrastructure as legitimate military targets, and typically involves the use of weapons and tactics that result in significant civilian or other non-combatant casualties, whether collateral damage or not. American-English Dictionary defines "total war" as "war that is unrestricted in terms of the weapons used, the territory or combatants involved, or the objectives pursued, especially one in which the laws of war are disregarded." The term can also be applied when the war effort requires significant sacrifices by most of the friendly civilian population.
In the mid-19th century, scholars identified "total war" as a separate class of warfare. In a total war, to an extent inapplicable to less total conflicts, the differentiation between combatants and non-combatants diminishes and even sometimes vanishes entirely as opposing sides can consider nearly every human resource, even that of non-combatants, as nevertheless part of the war effort.

Total War: 2006
Total War 2006 is a 1999 novel by Simon Pearson.
Plot
The future history the book lays out begins in 2001 with many minor conflicts taking place around the world, such as the end of the Algerian civil war, victory belonging to the Islamic Fundamentalists; Morocco following suit; and a military coup in Turkey to prevent such a development.
Meanwhile the United Kingdom and the USA invade Iraq as the final action of a failing US president whose nation is attempting to draw ever more into isolationism. Next North Korea announces that possesses nuclear weapons; a second Korean War follows closely followed by an attempted Chinese invasion of Taiwan which is easily stopped by American air power. In 2003 Russia has a military coup which (officially) restores the communists to power, closely followed by an invasion of the Baltic States resulting in a conventional war with NATO. Whilst the attention of the west is drawn here however Saudi Arabia also has a take over by Islamic fundamentalists. The Islamic Alliance is united behind a Saladin-like figure and forms an alliance of convenience with Russia launching its attack on the West, the principle acts of terrorism being a midget submarine attack on San Francisco harbour and an attack on RAF Brize Norton by home-grown Islamic terrorists.

I'M NOT IMPRESSED: Total War Pharaoh High Tide Honest Thoughts
On the 25th of January, Total War: Pharaoh will get a free update that adds a new culture: The Sea Peoples. But as someone who has always been interested in playing as the Sea Peoples in a game that covers the Bronze Age Collapse, this just doesn’t excite me. Now don’t get me wrong for a free update there is a lot here. Raiding and pillaging sounds great, 37 new units for free sounds like a lot, and the two new playable factions and the mechanics CA is adding to the game sounds good on paper. But none of this addresses any of the issues I and many thousands of others have about the game, lacking big cultures like Assyria, lacking a sense of realism, gritty brutality that we had in older games and others, mechanics with real risk & reward, this is just not enough. On the 25th of January, Total War: Pharaoh will get a free update that adds a new culture: The Sea Peoples. But as someone who has always been interested in playing as the Sea Peoples in a game that covers the Bronze Age Collapse, this just doesn’t excite me.
Now don’t get me wrong for a free update there is a lot here. Raiding and pillaging sounds great, 37 new units for free sounds like a lot, and the two new playable factions and the mechanics CA is adding to the game sounds good on paper. But none of this addresses any of the issues I and many thousands of others have about the game, lacking big cultures like Assyria, lacking a sense of realism, gritty brutality that we had in older games and others, mechanics with real risk & reward, this is just not enough.
So today I want to run through the trailer that was released and have a look at the updated Pharaoh Frequently Asked Questions page that goes into a bit more detail about the new factions & some of their new mechanics to give you my impression of how all of this might play out.

Walls are no obstacle to infantry that can pull ladders straight out of their ass. Meanwhile, the heaviest "guns" in the game struggle to make a dent. If you want to see why the sieges suck in Warhammer and always will, you do that by looking at all of the previously involved and efforted aspects and making comparisons - they had it right. Total War Might Never Recover from this Masterpiece
It is 2022, and which game still reigns supreme among Total War games? In my opinion, the answer is, if not simple, then at least semi clear - Medieval 2. It is almost 16 years to the date since Medieval 2 originally launched in 2006, and for that reason, I thought it was time to review this game once and for all, and bring a Medieval 2: Total War Review in 2022. It certainly is beginning to age, but compared to the original Rome, Medieval 2 continues to feel so much better, even when compared to the likes of Rome: Remastered. If you want to see why the sieges suck in Warhammer and always will, you do that by looking at all of the previously involved and efforted aspects and making comparisons - they had it right. What is a siege in a game where you don't even smash down walls with catapult, trebuchet or shot?

It is 2022, and which game still reigns supreme among Total War games? In my opinion, the answer is, if not simple, then at least semi clear - Medieval 2. It is almost 16 years to the date since Medieval 2 originally launched in 2006, and for that reason, I thought it was time to review this game once and for all, and bring a Medieval 2: Total War Review in 2022.
It certainly is beginning to age, but compared to the original Rome, Medieval 2 continues to feel so much better, even when compared to the likes of Rome: Remastered. I desperately need a Medieval 2 Remastered, or, if God wills it, Medieval 3 inshallah.

On the 25th of January, Total War: Pharaoh will get a free update that adds a new culture: The Sea Peoples. But as someone who has always been interested in playing as the Sea Peoples in a game that covers the Bronze Age Collapse, this just doesn’t excite me.
Now don’t get me wrong for a free update there is a lot here. Raiding and pillaging sounds great, 37 new units for free sounds like a lot, and the two new playable factions and the mechanics CA is adding to the game sounds good on paper. But none of this addresses any of the issues I and many thousands of others have about the game, lacking big cultures like Assyria, lacking a sense of realism, gritty brutality that we had in older games and others, mechanics with real risk & reward, this is just not enough.
So today I want to run through the trailer that was released and have a look at the updated Pharaoh Frequently Asked Questions page that goes into a bit more detail about the new factions & some of their new mechanics to give you my impression of how all of this might play out.

Total war
Total war is warfare that includes any and all civilian-associated resources and infrastructure as legitimate military targets, and typically involves the use of weapons and tactics that result in significant civilian or other non-combatant casualties, whether collateral damage or not. American-English Dictionary defines "total war" as "war that is unrestricted in terms of the weapons used, the territory or combatants involved, or the objectives pursued, especially one in which the laws of war are disregarded." The term can also be applied when the war effort requires significant sacrifices by most of the friendly civilian population.
In the mid-19th century, scholars identified "total war" as a separate class of warfare. In a total war, to an extent inapplicable to less total conflicts, the differentiation between combatants and non-combatants diminishes and even sometimes vanishes entirely as opposing sides can consider nearly every human resource, even that of non-combatants, as nevertheless part of the war effort.

Walls are no obstacle to infantry that can pull ladders straight out of their ass. Meanwhile, the heaviest "guns" in the game struggle to make a dent.
If you want to see why the sieges suck in Warhammer and always will, you do that by looking at all of the previously involved and efforted aspects and making comparisons - they had it right. What is a siege in a game where you don't even smash down walls with catapult, trebuchet or shot?

It is 2022, and which game still reigns supreme among Total War games? In my opinion, the answer is, if not simple, then at least semi clear - Medieval 2. It is almost 16 years to the date since Medieval 2 originally launched in 2006, and for that reason, I thought it was time to review this game once and for all, and bring a Medieval 2: Total War Review in 2022.
It certainly is beginning to age, but compared to the original Rome, Medieval 2 continues to feel so much better, even when compared to the likes of Rome: Remastered. I desperately need a Medieval 2 Remastered, or, if God wills it, Medieval 3 inshallah.
