East Village is the name given to neighborhoods in a number of cities, and has other uses:
A part of Zetland, New South Wales
East Village Radio (EVR) is an Internet radio station which broadcasts from a storefront studio in the East Village of Manhattan, in New York City. The station shut down on May 23, 2014 and relaunched in conjunction with Dash Radio, June 3, 2015.
EVR's street-level studio is on 21 First Avenue at East 1st Street. According to an MTA (Metropolitan Transit Authority) study of pedestrian traffic in New York City, almost 1,800 (1,000 during off-peak travel times) pedestrians passed by the sound booth per hour.
Over 60 DJs and hosts provide 16 hours of free live programming a day, in two-hour show blocks, seven days a week. Programming features a mix of music, news, comedy and commentary. Music ranges from indie to new wave to coldwave to hip hop and post punk to vintage jazz, funk and soul to house, techno and ambient electronic.
EVR supports the free radio movement.
East Village Radio was established in June 2003, and broadcast on the airwaves at 88.1 FM. After an article in The New York Times described the station, the FCC sent a cease-and-desist letter as the station was unlicensed to use the airwaves. Due to the difficulty of obtaining new FM licenses, the decision was made to make EVR an internet radio station.
Radio is the use of radio waves is to carry information, such as sound, by systematically modulating some property of electromagnetic energy waves transmitted through space, such as their amplitude, frequency, phase, or pulse width. When radio waves strike an electrical conductor, the oscillating fields induce an alternating current in the conductor. The information in the waves can be extracted and transformed back into its original form.
Radio systems need a transmitter to modulate (change) some property of the energy produced to impress a signal on it, for example using amplitude modulation or angle modulation (which can be frequency modulation or phase modulation). Radio systems also need an antenna to convert electric currents into radio waves, and vice versa. An antenna can be used for both transmitting and receiving. The electrical resonance of tuned circuits in radios allow individual stations to be selected. The electromagnetic wave is intercepted by a tuned receiving antenna. A radio receiver receives its input from an antenna and converts it into a form usable for the consumer, such as sound, pictures, digital data, measurement values, navigational positions, etc. Radio frequencies occupy the range from a 3 kHz to 300 GHz, although commercially important uses of radio use only a small part of this spectrum.
East is a noun, adjective, or adverb indicating direction or geography. East is one of the four cardinal directions or compass points. It is the opposite of west and is perpendicular to north and south.
The word east comes from Middle English est, from Old English ēast, which itself comes from the Proto-Germanic *aus-to- or *austra- "east, toward the sunrise", from Proto-Indo-European *aus- "to shine," or "dawn". This is similar to Old High German *ōstar "to the east", Latin aurora "dawn", and Greek ēōs or heōs.Ēostre, a Germanic goddess of dawn, might have been a personification of both dawn and the cardinal points.
By convention, the right hand side of a map is east. This convention has developed from the use of a compass, which places north at the top.
To go east using a compass for navigation, set a bearing or azimuth of 90°.
East is the direction toward which the Earth rotates about its axis, and therefore the general direction from which the Sun appears to rise. The practice of praying towards the East is older than Christianity, but has been adopted by this religion as the Orient was thought of as containing mankind's original home. Hence, most Christian churches are oriented towards the east.
A village is a clustered human settlement or community, larger than a hamlet but smaller than a town, with a population ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand. Though often located in rural areas, the term urban village is also applied to certain urban neighbourhoods. Villages are normally permanent, with fixed dwellings; however, transient villages can occur. Further, the dwellings of a village are fairly close to one another, not scattered broadly over the landscape, as a dispersed settlement.
In the past, villages were a usual form of community for societies that practise subsistence agriculture, and also for some non-agricultural societies. In Great Britain, a hamlet earned the right to be called a village when it built a church. In many cultures, towns and cities were few, with only a small proportion of the population living in them. The Industrial Revolution attracted people in larger numbers to work in mills and factories; the concentration of people caused many villages to grow into towns and cities. This also enabled specialization of labor and crafts, and development of many trades. The trend of urbanization continues, though not always in connection with industrialization. Villages have been eclipsed in importance as units of human society and settlement.
East Village Radio shut down in May of 2014 - closing down their space in Manhattan to huge disappointment and sadness to not only the listeners but to the music industry. EVR had made a name for themselves as one of the prime radio stations for excellent music curation, contributors, collaborators and hosts - doing great radio when many others went deep into the commercial side of things. Being a DJ requires much knowledge, skill and expertise - something all EVR DJ’s possessed - and that’s something that should never go out of style or off the air. But good news are in: East Village Radio is now back! Read the full piece on sonos.com/studio. -- SONOS wireless speakers bring all the music on earth to every room in your home, wirelessly. New York native Veronica Vasicka has unearthed countless analog synth wave gems and single-handedly revived a forgotten musical subgenre with Minimal Wave Records, the label she founded in 2005. And, with Minimal Wave subsidiary Cititrax, a new generation of like-minded composers have found a home for their DIY releases. Vasicka’s influential sound was partly cultivated via online station East Village Radio. (She was the station’s first program director.) And her reputation cemented with the release of the compilation The Minimal Wave Tapes Volume One on Stones Throw in 2010. Ever since, she’s spread the word of this incredible sound to audiences worldwide via releases on her vaunted labels and through her DJ sets. In this lecture at the 2016 Red Bull Music Academy in Montréal, Vasicka dis...

In 1969, Jerry Shirley was chosen to drum in a new band led by Steve Marriott and Peter Frampton. He had just turned 17. Along with bassist Greg Ridley, and manager Dee Anthony, the Pie started a 6-year journey that stormed the US and defined Arena Rock - bigger sound, bigger contracts, and bigger parties. Along the way Jerry meets with future legends that make for a star-studded bio and rare glimpse into the rock music industry. Written in his own voice and with a wicked musician sense of humor, Je...
Damani Baker (Still Bill) stops by to discuss his new documentary, "The House on Coco Road", a moving personal and historical account of how he and his family were caught up in the 1983 U.S. invasion of Grenada. The result is a fascinating and under-reported chapter in the never-ending struggle for justice on behalf of black men and women worldwide, as well as a scalding appraisal of Reagan-era racial attitudes at home and abroad. Then Australian transplant, filmmaker Matthew Newton discusses his new feature, "From Nowhere", about three undocumented Bronx teenagers who work toward graduating from high school while also struggling to secure their papers to stay in America. A most timely film indeed. Matthew's film opens theatrically in NYC at Village East Cinema on Friday, February 17th....
