Dick Dale and the Del-Tones - Misirlou, surf rock history
Dick Dale and the Del-Tones and Misrilou made the History of Surf Rock with a massive dose of reverb, although Misrilou (Μισιρλού in greek girl from Misri, where Misri is meaning Egypt coming from Arab via Turkey) was originally a Greek traditional rebetiko (a style that originated with the Greek refugees from Turkey) song composed around 1920, it can be considered one of the mile stones of surf rock together with Wipeout, Pipeline Surfin Bird and some proto-surf by Link Wray, partly also cuz of the revival lounched by Quentin Trantino's movie Pulp Fiction. Southern California ca. 1960 was a melting-pot of many strains of musical thought. Rock and Roll music was popular, with instrumental rockers such as Duane Eddy, Link Wray, and Santo and Johnny proving that strong vocal ability was unnecessary to achieve a level of stardom. Los Angeles was a hub of Jazz activity, and the biggest acts typically played there. Unlike much of the US at the time, large numbers of Mexicans lived in this part of California, and their music was no doubt heard by many aspiring musicians of the era. Rock instrumentation, with an aggressive jazz-influenced drummer and some Latin influences equals Surf music. It merely required a few local talents to achieve a level of popularity before a trend was born. Most Early surf bands were formed in Southern California area, with groups such as Dick Dale and the Del-Tones, the Challengers, Eddie & the Showmen and the Surfaris. Orange County in particular ...

Bombora by The Atlantics, surf rock history part two
The Atlantics are an Australian surf rock band formed in the early 1960s and arguably Australia's most successful of the genre. Most well-known for their classic hit, "Bombora", their later recordings such as "Come On" are examples of 1960s garage rock. They were the first Australian rock band to write their own hits. In 2000 the group reformed with three of the original members, and they are still actively releasing new material and performing live. The surf rock era was rather short lived and with the arrival of the Beatles in the US it was followed by what was termed garage punk rock, influenced more by the Rolling Stones, with Seattle's Wailers and Sonics being probably the most important bands in that line, and some diversity added by the 13th Floor Elevators, Love and The Monks who brought in new elements such as a psychedelic touch, but that was a few years later. By the early 1960s instrumental rock and roll had been pioneered successfully by performers such as Duane Eddy, Link Wray, and The Ventures. This trend was developed by Dick Dale who added the distinctive reverb, the rapid alternate picking characteristic of the genre, as well as Middle Eastern and Mexican influences, producing the regional hit "Let's Go Trippin'" in 1961 and launching the surf music craze, following up with songs like "Misirlou" (1962). Like Dale and his Del-Tones, most early surf bands were formed in Southern California area, with Orange County in particular having a strong surf culture ...

12-23-09 update, cool, I've been trying to identify any of these big wave riders and just got the following email from Delphine Lamour the communications manager at Oxbow surf wear.
Hello Kalani,
In this video you have Oxbow team riders Laird Hamilton, Kai Lenny and Jason Polakow.
Amazing!
Kind regards,
Delphine LAMOUR
12-18-09 Thank you all for the amazing emails with your Maui memories and kind comments !, that's the stuff that warms my soul !
I love it if you "like" it, please share me if you love me.
Aloha all, just wanted to post a little footage from Jaws today...These waves are insanely huge and I have so much respect for the surfers that have the guts to do this as well as the jet ski operators that are tremendously talented in their own right, many of them big wave riders as well..
Anyhow, I live a couple of miles from Jaws on W.Kuiaha in a little town called Haiku. At night I can hear these monsters breaking, they sound like thunder...

One of the Jaws pioneers is Laird Hamilton. His wife Gabrielle Reece had this to say on his blog today..
"12-7-09 Swell Update from Laird

3:50 Hawaii Time
I just spoke to Laird around 3pm Hawaii time (5pm PST) from Maui. He said they had a good morning and that his board and body were feeling good. They went out fairly early, and it had not gotten too crowded yet. The boys (Dave Kalama, Terry Chun, Derrick Doerner and others) came in for gas fuel and food fuel for lunch. By then a front had come in and “chop sueyed” the waves. Laird then proceeded to watch some of the action from the cliff side. He said a lot of skis went up on to the rocks along with some boards. He felt like there may have been several new comers who were having to work it all out.
I’m on Kauai and Kings reef began to break ever so slightly. The ocean floor by this reef is so deep that you don’t even see Kings unless it’s starting to be Hawaiian 25 ft (that’s double in the front).
The boys are going to sit tight on Maui and then make their plan for tomorrow. As most of you know the swell hits Kauai first, then Oahu (which is having a bit of rain and some major water surging), Maui and so on. Once they get a beat on the conditions (wind, swell) they will most likely decide to continue to stay on Maui and surf Peah’i (aka Jaws) tomorrow. If I hear anything of interest I will let you all know."

YEAR ZERO TRAILER
YEAR ZERO is a modern take on high performance surfing set in a post-apocalyptic world, reminiscent of Mad Max or an HG Wells novel. It tells a story of a band of renegade surfers, including Dion Agius, Yadin Nicol, Nate Tyler, Taj Burrow, CJ Hobgood and Damien Hobgood, on a road trip through the apocalypse in search of waves, women, and good times. The film’s original soundtrack by BLACK MOUNTAIN, whom VICE MAGAZINE has called, “One of the best rock n’ roll bands of our time,” creates a sonic landscape that fully delivers the immersive experience that director Joe G envisioned for the film.
The film was shot on location around the world entirely in super 16mm film and offers a unique concept with stunning visuals that capture the essence of surfing in a novel setting. YEAR ZERO follows GLOBE’S previous award winning productions such as SECRET MACHINE and NEW EMISSIONS OF LIGHT AND SOUND and is undoubtedly GLOBE’S largest film project to date.

"032" The Canadian Affair
“032” is a dreamy atmospheric journey through a series of suspended events. Music
from, The Good The Bad was commissioned to enhance the erie poetic palette that pivots
around stillness, leaving us curious to past and future.
The short film, uses texture and mood to slip through a rich tapestry of sliced
moments. It portrays the inherent power that an action, slowed almost to stillness, has
to evoke the imagination. Instead of the subjects moving within the shot, the camera
floats through almost perfectly still universes creating a erie yet undisputedly beautiful
world that is caught between past and future. While the shots which vary in tone from
mundane to optimistic to tragic do not offer a distinct resolution, the film ends on hopeful
note.

THIS IS OZZIE - TOME 3
Desillusion magazine, supported by Volcom and Electric visual are proud to present their latest video “This is Ozzie”, a video portrait that pays tribute to the Australian surfer Ozzie Wright.
Born and raised in a family that he himself calls "a bunch of hippies" , Ozzie grew up on the beaches of northern Sydney, known today to be amongst the most competitive in the world - beaches that gave birth to world champions such as Tom Caroll and Nat Young. But Ozzie quickly decided to choose a different path than the one that led to competitions. Inspired by the skate and punk scene, he was the first person to bring humor and DIY philosophy to the surf scene. From the paintings on his boards, the shape, his special way of surfing ( a melange of strength and airs, normally done in skateboarding) , to the creation of his punk rock band Goon of Doom, Ozzie's the man who gave new insight to surfing, a fresh perspective that inspired a whole generation of surfers. ( Dane Reynolds, Alex Knost, Dion Agius, etc)
“This is Ozzie” is a portrait of one of the most intriguing personalities that surfing has ever seen. With interview footage that's never been seen before , Wright shares his fear, his love and his original lifestyle, an pure ode to the core of surf spirit.
After the great success of “This is Trouble”, a short movie portraying snowboarder and musician Trevor “Trouble” Andrew that was launched last February ( vimeo.com/desillusion/thisistrouble), and the second, a tribute to Andrew Reynolds “ This is Andrew” ( vimeo.com/desillusion/thisisandrew ) , "This is Ozzie” is the third video made by Desillusion magazine , a dedication to one of their most influential inspirations in the board culture scene. The video comes with the latest issue of Desillusion magazine featuring Ozzie Wright as their exclusive guest editor, available on http://www.dslmag.com/v5/shop.php
