Nebraska i/nəˈbræskə/ is a state that lies in both the Great Plains and the Midwestern United States. Its state capital is Lincoln. Its largest city is Omaha, which is on the Missouri River. The state is crossed by many historic trails and was explored by the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The California Gold Rush brought the first large numbers of non-indigenous settlers to the area. Nebraska was admitted as the 37th state of the United States in 1867. The climate has wide variations between winter and summer temperatures, and violent thunderstorms and tornadoes are common. The state is characterized by treeless prairie, which is ideal for cattle-grazing. It is a major producer of beef, as well as pork, corn, and soybeans. The largest ancestry group claimed by Nebraskans is German American. The state also has the largest per capita population of Czech Americans among U.S. states.
Nebraska's name is derived from transliteration of the archaic Otoe words Ñí Brásge, pronounced [ɲĩbɾasꜜkɛ] (contemporary Otoe Ñí Bráhge), or the Omaha Ní Btháska, pronounced [nĩbɫᶞasꜜka], meaning "flat water", after the Platte River that flows through the state.
A city is a large and permanent human settlement. Although there is no agreement on how a city is distinguished from a town in general English language meanings, many cities have a particular administrative, legal, or historical status based on local law.
Cities generally have complex systems for sanitation, utilities, land usage, housing, and transportation. The concentration of development greatly facilitates interaction between people and businesses, benefiting both parties in the process, but it also presents challenges to managing urban growth.
A big city or metropolis usually has associated suburbs and exurbs. Such cities are usually associated with metropolitan areas and urban areas, creating numerous business commuters traveling to urban centers for employment. Once a city expands far enough to reach another city, this region can be deemed a conurbation or megalopolis. In terms of population, the largest city proper is Shanghai, while the fastest-growing is Dubai.
There is not enough evidence to assert what conditions gave rise to the first cities. Some theorists have speculated on what they consider suitable pre-conditions and basic mechanisms that might have been important driving forces.
"Red Skies" is a song by new wave rock group The Fixx. Released in 1982, it was the third single from the band's debut album, Shuttered Room. The song charted in the Netherlands, United Kingdom and United States, and was re-recorded for the band's 1987 album, React.
The song appeared on the Fixx's 1982 album Shuttered Room. The lyrics of "Red Skies" warn of an imminent nuclear holocaust.
According to drummer Adam Woods, MCA Records requested that the band re-record the song for their 1987 React album. "Nobody at MCA was really interested in the new things we wanted to do," Woods said. "They told us to re-do 'Red Skies,' and we gave in. We figured, 'All right, we'll give them exactly what they want, and it will bomb.' And sure enough, it did."
"Red Skies" peaked at number 13 on the U.S. Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, number 44 in the Netherlands and number 57 in the UK. Winda Benedetti of the The Spokesman-Review said it was one "of the more cutting-edge pop [songs] of the time." Mark Spinn of The Orange County Register called it "the best of the band's moodier material." Bill Locey of the Los Angeles Times complimented the song's "memorable chorus". The Fixx performed the song on Saturday Night Live on February 18, 1984.

The writer Garth Risk Hallberg explores the affinities between the modern social novel and the modern city. From Dickens’s London to Richard Wright’s Chicago, from the Paris of Les Misérables to the Boston of The Bostonians, the two have developed in parallel. But for a novelist, the relationship goes deeper than content. (50:05) Following his lecture, Hallberg participates in a conversation with the novelist Claire Messud RI '05, a senior lecturer on fiction at Harvard University. Messud’s books include The Woman Upstairs (Knopf, 2013),and The Emperor’s Children (Knopf, 2006). Media depictions: A musical entitled "Comrade Rockstar", with music by Richard John and libretto by Julian Woolford is currently in development, using none of Reed's songs. One hour's material from the show was presented in workshop by students from London's Arts Educational School in November 2007, and further workshops have taken place at Central School of Speech and Drama and Royal Scottish Academy of Speech and Drama. A full-reading took place in February 2012 with a cast including West End stars Ben Goddard, Rosie Ashe, Issy Van Randwyck, Katie Secombe, Kajsa Hummerlund and Gemma Sutton. Reed's life story influenced Grammy Award-winning writer and comedian Lewis Black and composer Rusty Magee to create "The Czar of Rock and Roll", a musical which chronicles Reed-like character Eugen...
