Niflunga Saga Part One: Waking the Fate. (Poetic Edda)
www.freya.theladyofthelabyrinth.com "Völsungar"= Descendants of the völ. The völ was the sacred staff of spiritual authority carried by the völur (witches, priestesses), and also symbolised the potency and generating power of the world tree. The Volsungar were descendants of the Vanir god Freyr and the giantess Gerd. The last Volsung, Sigurd the Dragonslayer (in reality a serpent-slayer) is related to the Aesir on his mother´s side His mother Hjördis ("Goddess of Herds") is the sister of Gripir, one of Odin´s many names. This story is a summarised version of the heroic poems of the Elder Edda: The poems of Helgi Hundingsbani The poem of Helgi Hjörvardsson The Speech of Regin (Reginsmál) The Prophecy of Gripir (Gripisspá) The Speech of Fafnir (Fafnismál) The Speech of Sigrdrifa (Sigrdrifumál) Backup from the Volsunga saga and from Snorri´s Skaldskaparmál (Prose Edda), but wherever I have encountered discrepancies between the versions, I have applied the Poetic Edda version, as it is the oldest we have and the most archaic and thoroughly pagan. A story about clan wars and spiritual growth and the quest for the sleeping valkyria. First part of a trilogy that together will cover all the heroic poems of the Edda. Music soundtrack listed with artists, albums and songs in sequential order in the end of the video. No copyright violation intended, this is a non-profit rough video of educational purpose aiming to share ancient legends and myths on youtube only.

Ring of the Nibelungs
The absolute masterpiece of Germanic literature, the Nordic Volsunga saga. Picked up by Wagner in his 19th century opera Ring der Nibelungen. Recently made into an epic movie starring Benno Fürmann and Kristanna Loken. Great ending to the story, with queen Brunhild slaying Hagen, and Siegfried - like most Germanic heroes dying a violent death - receiving his viking funeral, the movie ending with the burning drakkar sinking into the Rhine.

Niflunga Saga part 3: The Last Bride in Armour (Poetic Edda)
"The death of Attila caused the Hunnish empire to crumble within a few years, freeing the Northern European tribes after almost a century of flight and submission...It would have been strange indeed if the woman who indirectly, yet single-handedly brought down the entire Hunnish Empire was not remembered in the lore of the tribes...Only one example of such lore survives: In the Elder (Poetic) Edda, where Hildegunde is remembered (and elaborated) in the character of the Burgund princess Gudrun." The death of the Burgund king Gundahar ("Gunnar" in the Edda) and his men by the hands of the Huns under Attila historically happened in the year 436 AD Attila´s death happened in 453, so the Edda account, where the vengeance against Attila is immediate, is not historically accurate but does reflect historical events (Attila was possibly murdered by one of his German wives as part of a blood vengeance), and is heavily blended with mythology and esoteric revelations about the quest for immortality. Edda poems that I have based the presentation of this last part of the legend on are: The First Poem of Gudrun The Second Poem of Gudrun The Old Poem of Gudrun Oddrun´s Lament The Poem of Atli The Greenlandic Poem of Atli The Whetting of Gudrun The Speech of Hamdir The idea that these legends were told to Aegir at a banquet in Asgard by the god of poetry (Bragi), the invitation back to Aegir´s hall of immortality, and the revelation that Sigurd had a daughter by the valkyria, called ...

Das Nibelungenlied
The Nibelungenlied is an epic poem in Middle High German. The story tells of dragon-slayer Siegfried at the court of the Burgundians, how he was murdered, and of his wife Kriemhild's revenge. The Nibelungenlied is based on pre-Christian Germanic heroic motifs preserved in oral traditions. Old Norse versions of the legend survive in the Völsunga saga, and the Poetic Edda. The image is a manuscript of the Nibelungenlied dating from the 13th century. The Nibelungenlied is often confused with Wagner's "Ring Cycle" of operas, a product of 19th century Romantic nationalism loosely inspired by material from the Völsunga saga and Nibelungenlied. The originals are quite different, both in story line and symbolism, and could even be interpreted as commentary on the tragic futility of violence. (1) In old stories we are informed of many wonders. Of famous heroes, of great struggles. Of happiness and festivals, of tears and lamentation. Of the strife between bold warriors, you can still hear about these things today. (2) A noble girl grew up in Burgundy, There was none more beautiful in any land, Kriemhild was her name: She became a beautiful woman. Because of this many men would lose their lives. (4) Her caretakers were three kings, noble and rich: Gunther and Gernot, the famous warriors, and the young Giselher, an excellent knight. The lady was their sister, the princes cared about her. (13) In these noble surroundings Kriemhild dreamed. She was raising a falcon, strong, beautiful ...

Ring Of Nibelungs Part 1/20
Based on the Germanic myth "Das Nibelungenlied" and the Nordic "Volsunga Saga" which also inspired the four-opera cycle by Richard Wagner and JRR Tolkien's epic "The Lord of the Rings", this is the story of the young blacksmith Siegfried, who, not knowing that he is heir to a conquered kingdom, becomes popular with the Burgunds by slaying their bane, the dragon Fafnir. When the reward seems to be a huge treasure, Siegfried ignores the curse that lies on the hoard - which now seems to endanger his love to beautiful Norse warrior queen Brunhild.

The legend of Sigurd the dragon slayer plus the Sigurd stones
The Sigurd stones form a group of seven or eight runestones and one image stone that depict imagery from the legend of Sigurd the dragon slayer. They were made during the Viking Age and they constitute the earliest Norse representations of the matter of the Nibelungenlied and the Sigurd legends in the Poetic Edda, the Prose Edda and the Völsunga saga. Sigurd (Old Norse: Sigurðr) is a legendary hero of Norse mythology, as well as the central character in the Völsunga saga. The earliest extant representations for his legend come in pictorial form from seven runestones in Sweden[1] and most notably the Ramsund carving (c. 1000) and the Gök Runestone (11th century). As Siegfried, he is the hero in the German Nibelungenlied, and Richard Wagner's operas Siegfried and Götterdämmerung.

Das Rheingold -- Fafner fights Fasolt, Donner summons bolt
This clip starts with Wotan giving the ring back to the giants and ends just as "Abendlich strahlt der Sonne Auge" starts--go here to see "Abendlich strahlt": www.youtube.com James Morris as Wotan Matti Salminen as Fafner Jan-Hendrik Rootering as Fasolt Siegfried Jerusalem as Loge Christa Ludwig as Fricka Mark Baker as Froh Alan Held as Donner Otto Schenk's fine naturalistic stage production is matched by vintage playing of Met under James Levine, from 1990. The costumes for the giants are among the best! Matti Salminen reappears in this cycle, even more impressively, as Hagen. Some of that already posted. Das Rheingold ("The Rhine Gold"), by Richard Wagner, premiered at the National Theatre in Munich on 22 September 1869. Kaspar Bausewein was the original Fafner, and he also created roles of Harald in Die Feen, Veit Pogner in Die Mesitersinger, and Hunding in Die Walkure. Wagner stays pretty close to the source material (here, the Old Norse Volsunga Saga) in depicting Fafner's actions.
