Brecht broke down the fourth wall and Weill ushered in a new kind of musical theatre integrating jazz into his scintillating score. The Threepenny Opera is part satire, part aesthetic innovation and sheer theatrical invention. Borrowing John Gay’s 18th century ballad opera, The Beggar’s Opera, Brecht takes aim at the traditional bourgeois theatre of the Weimar Republic, revealing a society where law is fickle, money corrupts, and crime pays.
