Racial abuse in Whangarei

From The Northern Advocate:

Abuse taints life in country these people call home
27.04.2007
By Saskia Konynenburg

Some members of Whangarei’s Asian community say they face constant persecution and racial abuse, leaving them feeling unwelcome in New Zealand.

A group of Asian teenagers contacted the Northern Advocate saying they were often harassed and many of their peers had “experienced aggression from a very small but disturbing minority in Whangarei”.

Despite having spent most of their lives in New Zealand, they were still made to feel like foreigners in a country they called home.

442 : 1 – It’s not good enough

From the AJN:

442 incidents, one conviction

The 442 antisemitic incidents that were logged between October ’05 and September ’06 were like the several thousands reported in the years before – investigated but then swept under the carpet. But when Menachem Vorchheimer was attacked by a busload of footballers on erev Simchat Torah last year, he decided not to look the other way. As PETER KOHN and MELISSA SINGER report, his tenacity has resulted in a landmark decision.

AROUND 6.30pm on October 14 last year, a languid Saturday evening, as Shabbat was passing into erev Simchat Torah, Menachem Vorchheimer was walking with his two children near the crossroads of Carlisle and Hotham streets in St Kilda East, in Melbourne.

At the same time, in a seemingly different universe, around 20 members of the Ocean Grove Football Club, from Victoria’s surf coast, were in a festive mood as they drove home from an outing to the Caulfield Cup Carnival.

Liberal figures party like it’s 1941

From Crikey.com.au:

Oops. Coonan attends neo-Nazi celebration …
Anti-racism campaigner Cam Smith writes:

The Jewish and Croatian communities of Australia are, according to a report in today’s Australian Jewish News, angry and outraged that Communications Minister Helen Coonan, Liberal Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells and NSW Upper House MP David Clarke attended a commemoration of Croatia’s inglorious independence on 10 April:

The Howard Government has been embarrassed by the appearance of a cabinet minister at a Croatian independence function linked to a murderous neo-Nazi regime.

Jewish groups are outraged at Communications Minister Helen Coonan’s attendance at the Sydney commemoration earlier this month, which marked Croatia’s independence following the fascist Ustase regime’s rise to power during World War II.

Liberal Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells and NSW Upper House MP David Clarke were also guests at the April 10 event, held at the Croatian Club in Punchbowl.

NSW Jewish Board of Deputies (NSWJBD) CEO Vic Alhadeff described the celebration as “offensive to Australians, while it is understood Croatian embassy officials are also angered at the involvement of a senior government minister.

Coonan attends fascist bash

A wee tip to Senator Coonan – if David “Taliban” Clarke invites you out for a night on the town… don’t bloody go. Jeez, it’s not rocket science.

QLD scientist develops bigotry index

From ScienceAlert! Australia:

Homophobia in Australia

University of Queensland research has shown Australians are more likely to be homophobic than racist.

Research conducted by Professor John Mangan, from UQ’s School of Economics, and a colleague from the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland, looked at the amount of bigotry in Western countries with some surprising results.

“While countries such as Northern Ireland and Greece came out as the most bigoted countries, across the board more people were likely to be homophobic than anything else, Professor Mangan said.

More racial assaults in Nelson

From the Nelson Mail:

Racial motive suspected

A Nelson man has been arrested after what police describe as two racially motivated attacks on Asians in the city last night.

Nelson Bays area commander Inspector Brian McGurk said the first attack happened when a woman of southeast Asian descent came home to her St Vincent St house and found the 39-year-old man in her garage about 6.30pm.

She got into a fight with the man when she tried to kick him out. He allegedly punched her and put her in a headlock, then ran off before police arrived, Mr McGurk said.

Stormfront cracks wood and their credulity over ANZAC Day

BANA, just one of numerous former Australian and New Zealand defence force personnel who make up the FDB ranks, writes:

Once again ANZAC Day is coming around and once again the neo nazis over at Stormfront are jumping up and down like Ferrets doing a “weasel war dance” encouraging each other to support the diggers and stand behind “Aussie” values and alleging immigrants are trying to hijack ANZAC Day.

Once again, these faceless gutless misanthropes and troglodytes have pissed me off.

Take this gem of a comment on Stormfront for example;

SkinheadSkippy writes:

ANZAC day is a very special day for ALL Australians and New Zealanders(sp?)

I celebrate the ANZAC’s EVERY DAY by saluting my Australian Flag and thanking of all the men for their sacrifice.

Everybody should get behind the ANZACS!!

SIEG HEIL!

Mate, you must have a few skippies loose in the top paddock if you are trying to claim you support the sacrifice ANZAC troops made when you sign off your post with the NAZI party’s war cry.

From the Rockhampton Morning Bulletin:

Leaflets violate race hate laws
By NATALIE SMITH

Politicians with double standards? Heavens forfend!

From Crikey:

One law for the mufti, another for the pastor
UNIFEM White Ribbon Day ambassador Irfan Yusuf writes

While The Australian manages to find excuses to keep Sheik Hilaly on its pages (even if only by citing Lebanese community leaders, as if the other 59 nationalities of Aussie Muslims are irrelevant), one of the major wedges used by its conservative columnists and the politicians they serve seems to have fallen between the cracks.
