Lassie - The well
Lassie is an American television series that follows the adventures of a female Rough Collie dog named Lassie and her companions, human and animal. The show was the creation of producer Robert Maxwell and animal trainer Rudd Weatherwax and was televised from September 12, 1954, to March 24, 1973. One of the longest-running series on television, the show chalked up seventeen seasons on CBS before entering first-run syndication for its final two seasons. Initially filmed in black and white, the show transitioned to color in 1965. The show's first ten seasons follow Lassie's adventures in a small farming community. Fictional eleven-year-old Jeff Miller, his mother, and his grandfather are Lassie's first human companions until seven-year-old Timmy Martin and his adoptive parents take over in the fourth season. When Lassie's exploits on the farm end in the eleventh season, she finds new adventures in the wilderness with a succession of United States Forest Service Rangers. After traveling without human leads for a year, Lassie finally settles at a children's home for her final two syndicated seasons. Lassie received critical favor at its debut and won two Emmy Awards in its first years. Stars Jan Clayton and June Lockhart were nominated for Emmys. Merchandise produced during the show's run included books, a Halloween costume, clothing, toys, and other items. Campbell's Soup, the show's lifelong sponsor, offered two premiums (a ring and a wallet), and distributed thousands to fans. A multi-part episode was edited into the feature film Lassie's Great Adventure and released in August 1963. In 1989, the television series The New Lassie brought Lassie star Jon Provost back to television as Steve McCullough. Selected episodes have been released to DVD.- published: 24 Oct 2013

Inheritance - Part 1 - The first episode of Lassie
Part 1 of 2. The complete first Lassie TV episode. Originally broadcast September 12th 1954 as "Lassie", in later syndication retitled "Jeff's Collie" to separate Jeff and Lassie episodes from the Timmy and Lassie episodes. This episode was rebroadcast by COZI TV on February 28th 2014 via over-the-air (antenna) tv. Unfortunately, the first 2 minutes of the episode (Jeff in the kitchen with his mother getting ready to go to the reading of the Will) had been edited out to make way for commercials. I found that clip elsewhere and edited it back in to complete the episode in its entirety. This is also the only episode that shows the front of the Miller house; all the other episodes only show the back of the home. "Lassie"/"Jeff's Collie", 11/17/57 - "The Wolf Cub" - Timmy longs for a dog of his own, as he knows Lassie belongs to Jeff. While in the woods, he stumbles upon a wolf cub that has wandered out of its den, and takes it home, thinking it's just a cute little puppy. Timmy hides it in the barn, but when Lassie brings it into the house, Jeff has to tell Timmy it's really a wolf cub, and both he and Ellen try to explain to Timmy why he can't keep it. Tommy Rettig, Jan Clayton, Donald Keeler and Jon Provost. ***(Gramps is not in this episode, as George Cleveland passed away on 7/15/57. Obviously all the Miller/Timmy episodes of the fourth season were shot earlier in the year, and just televised starting 9/8/57).- published: 04 Jan 2014

Lassie - Episode 3 - "The Colt" (09/26/1954) - directed by Sheldon Leonard
Gramps gives Jeff a horse which makes Jeff forget about Lassie until the collie runs away. (TRIVIA: This early episode was the second of only six Lassie episodes directed by Sheldon Leonard, a former actor who went on to become one of Hollywood's all time greatest directors/producers. He had just moved from acting to directing in the early 1950's, and Lassie was quite possibly one of his earliest directing job ( Leonard is credited with directing "Make Room For Daddy" in 1953). Unfortunately, no where is it noted, including in Wikipedia, that Sheldon Leonard directed the 2nd and 3rd episodes of the longest running series in the history of television - Lassie. Chuck Lorre, who created "The Big Bang Theory", named his two main characters - Sheldon Cooper and Leonard Hofstadter - as an homage to Sheldon Leonard. "LASSIE"/"JEFF'S COLLIE", 12/1/57 - "TRANSITION" **(FINAL MILLER EPISODE)
***SPOILER ALERT: DON'T READ DESCRIPTION, AS THE ENTIRE PLOT IS HERE! "Lassie"/"Jeff's Collie", 12/1/57 - "Transition" - Gramps has passed away, and everyone is in shock and mourning. Jeff and Ellen are now left with big decisions: what to do with the farm, and Timmy. They both would like to adopt him, but Miss Beauvard, the social worker, thinks Timmy would be best off with a married couple. As luck would have it, a young couple, Paul and Ruth Martin, are looking to buy a farm in the area. One night, Timmy overhears Ellen and Jeff talking about their plans, and knows, once again, he's going to be "given away", and runs off, with Lassie watching out for him closely behind, but unseen by Timmy. When the Martin's come by the next day, Ellen and Paul go looking for Timmy, who runs into the lake to escape them. Paul saves him, and they bring him back to the house, where it's love at first sight for Ruth Martin. Finally the day arrives when Jeff and Ellen have to say goodbye to Porky, the Martins, Timmy, and Lassie, who Jeff bequeaths to Timmy. Lassie - Episode 119 - "The Goose" - Season 4, #16 (12/22/1957)
When a young girl visiting the Martins loses her pet goose, Timmy and Lassie go on the hunt to find it. NOTE: This particular episode begins a whole raft of episodes with child non-actors being used in the stories, specifically setting the stage for Linda Wrather, the daughter of Lassie producers Jack and Bonita Granville Wrather, to be cast in a number of roles in various episodes.Sad to think that prior guest actors in the first three seasons of Lassie all came from an excellent stock of child actors with backgrounds in either hit Hollywood movies, or hit TV series. Not anymore. Guess the Wrathers were either too cheap to hire decent child actors...or were hoping their daughter could break into a lucrative career of acting by being cast in roles on Lassie. Either way, nepotism didn't work - for the series, or for Linda whose acting was simply absymal, poor kid. She only ever cast in two productions: Lassie, and one episode of The Lone Ranger which was also produced by her father. NOTE: This recording has been edited to remove commercials and to add titles and descriptions. The re-broadcast has not been stretched or modified in any way from the original film which was distributed for TV viewing in classic black and white early 1950's "square TV screen" format. "Lassie" is copyrighted and owned by Classic Media. The first 4 seasons of "Lassie" were later syndicated as "Jeff's Collie". Lassie - Episode 42 - "The Gift" - Season 2, #16 (12/25/1955)
The Brockway's new television is accidentally delivered to the Millers by mistake. When Gramps, who professes to hate the new fangled object, secretly turns it on to watch it while Ellen and Jeff are away, Lassie to jumps at the TV when a dog appears barking on the screen, and knocks the tv onto the floor, breaking it. Gramps now has to have it fixed before it is returned to the real owners. A very funny classic Lassie comedy in the early television days of the '50's. It was especially entertaining to watch Gramps sitting nearby trying to view the itty-bitty tiny tv screen through a pair of binoculars.
