Dismantling the Digital Divide
Technology has always been a prime factor in bringing about change in the lives of people. It can be used for economic prosperity, empowerment and social change. But in a country like India, with wide discrepancies in education and access to knowledge, the distribution of technology becomes a cause for concern as inequalities result in a widening digital divide. This is where Information and Communication Technologies or ICT come into the picture. It bring.

My name is Socheat Kio. I live in Phnom Penh with my family and my wife. We have 3 families living together in one house.
True Stories of the Connected
SOCHEAT KEO
Last 10 years we didn't have computer or internet to access anywhere in Cambodia.
SOCHEAT KEO
I have to learn is computer. Because most of the company in Cambodia require people who know how to use them.
SOCHEAT KEO
I first start as a data entry operator at DDD in 2001. Now I oversee 400 people.
SOCHEAT KEO
Digital Divide Data is a social enterprise to develop poor people to have a better chance in the future by providing first job experience, English skills and new technology.
SOCHEAT KEO
Smart is one of our biggest clients in Cambodia.
Y SOLY
Our company is big and we want to know exact information like how many percentage of our subscribers use in Phnom Penh. DDD sends us the data very quickly over the internet.
BY 2020, the Internet of Everything has the potential to connect 50 BILLION people, processes, data and things.
SOCHEAT KEO
I think that connect technology is very important in the future to gain more knowledge. Young people who are living outside the city can connect to the internet and study at university or school in Phnom Penh.
SOTEERA
Many people have knowledge, they have a good education. Cambodia is better than before because of education.
SOCHEAT KEO
Now the Cambodian people can connect to other people everywhere. New connect technology can allow us to collaborate together.

Year Zero - OFFF Barcelona 2011 Main Titles
Following in the footsteps of Prologue Films and The Mill, PostPanic have created this year’s prestigious opening titles 'Year Zero' for OFFF Festival 2011 in Barcelona http://offf.ws/bcn2011/
Written by Mischa Rozema and British graphic designer, Si Scott, the opening titles reflect their dark thoughts on a possible future. Directed by Mischa and shot on location in Prague, the film guides the viewer through a grim scenario embedded with the names of artists appearing at this year’s OFFF festival. The live action was brought back to Amsterdam for post, primarily carried out by PostPanic’s in-house team of artists but also with the additional help of freelancers and partner companies that we have enjoyed strong creative relationships with over the years. It’s really fair to say that this was a labour of love by a passionate crew of people.
DIRECTOR'S NOTES (By Mischa Rozema)
This project started out as a collaboration between myself and Si Scott. Right from the start, we decided that it should be the darkest thing we could make. I think it just felt natural to the both of us; if we had to nail the future, it would not be a nice place.
This idea evolved into a clash of times. Inspired by an idea from the late Arthur C. Clarke. He wrote about different historical civilizations meeting in a single point in time. So what happens when civilizations meet? The 'weaker' one gets eaten by the 'stronger'. You only have to look at history to see the destructive power of civilizations.
So the main underlying idea is: what would happen if the future lands on our doorstep today? Let's take mankind, add perhaps 100 years and then let them show up on our doorstep today. The future would pretty much devour the present. Probably in a matter of, let's say, 7 days… So that's what we're looking at. But every ending also means a new beginning, hence Year Zero.
There's all kinds of hidden messages in there. Like the virus eating away at reality, buildings and people, even at the viewers brain. It's behaving off course much like a computer virus. And the network of wires represents the future of social networking. I just made it physical and let it 'catch' the city and it's people like a net. All these ideas just serve as inspiration for us to create a future that worked for this concept. They're not meant to be deciphered by the audience. It's still meant to be just a title sequence and not an actual movie.
Now what makes a good title sequence? Personally, I think it's something that gets you in the mood, warms you up for what you're about to experience, be it a film, tv series or in our case, the OFFF festival. We decided to treat the OFFF festival as a feature film experience. So all we had to do was get the viewer into the right state of mind. Without, of course, being too narrative led. The best title sequences out there are nothing but a random collection of images/scenes that don't tell a lot if you watch them on their own. But edit them together and a new context is created. A context that matters, a feeling that gets the viewer ready for the main event, in our case, the festival.
To get started, the next thing we did was make a collection of ideas that would scare me and Si. So, anything drawn from our youth, right through to stuff that's inspired us over the years as well as seemingly random compositions that trigger the imagination of the viewer. For example, when we show you the aesthetics of a car explosion, it's carefully constructed. Why a car and not something else? Because an exploding car brings extra content to an otherwise simple aesthetic display of violence. A car doesn't explode by itself so instantly the brain tries to formulate the background behind it. It adds an either political or criminal edge to the violence. To me it felt appropriate because of the sense of protest and rebellion the shot has. And maybe the biggest question; was there someone in the car and if so, who was it? For me, every idea should provoke these kind of questions; from a girl in a prom dress holding a rocket launcher to a riot cop standing in the kitchen. All scenes have a pre and post story to them. In no time you're actually trying to connect these seemingly random scenes and boom; you've just created your own strange context. You now have a feeling, a taste and lots of questions probably. Questions that normally would be answered by watching the actual movie. But since there's no actual movie here we'll leave stranded with, hopefully, an uncomfortable feeling and lots of questions - some might feel unsatisfied and wondering why. Just like a nightmare.
We also wanted the actual titles to be different this time. Most of the time festival titles are driven by the idea on how to show titles. A mechanism that displays titles in a creative way. We actually thought to bring the festival theme to the foreground and have the titles play a part in it. Incorporate them so they become the actual fiber/texture of the

Prototyping Interfaces – Teaser
Interactiondesigners develop our digital everyday life. They concept, sketch and create new possibilities of interaction, which are evaluated with functional and technical prototypes.
The book "Prototyping Interfaces – Interactive Sketches with VVVV" covers within 280 pages the applied handling of interactive sketches with the visual programming language VVVV. It is divided into two main chapters, a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical part concerns the definition and the meaning of the term "prototype" in the designprocess. The practical part of the book branches the basics of the visual programming language VVVV and how to control different electronic components with Arduino and VVVV. Beginning from the use of different sensors and actuators to modern tracking technologies like the xBox Kinect, different examples are explained within a wide range of tutorials.
Additional to the book a website is launched within the user finds the patches for every single example described in the book. Also the website provides technical support and a playground which can be used to upload and share private projects.
"Prototyping Interfaces" is addressed to designstudents, interactiondesigners and media artists.

V&A; Ornamental installation (06/2011)
The Victoria & Albert Museum commissioned me to create an interactive installation as part of their activities around the Cult Of Beauty Aestheticism exhibition. Keeping William Morris as a loose source of inspiration, as well as addressing the museum's upcoming Power Of Making collaboration with the Crafts Council, I proposed to create a modern, stripped down interpretation of his pattern work mixed with classic islamic/indian geometric influences and then realised this project using different digital fabrication techniques.
The result is a Victorian-esque, ornamental, laser-cut, 2-panel room divider, covered in 620 hand folded paper cones, mounted on the front surface as projection canvas. Visitors can create their own pattern using an iPad hidden in a small table (also laser-cut) standing nearby.
The generated tiling pattern is based on a central octagon surrounded by other polygons (4,5,6,7-gons). It forms the guiding topology for both the panels and the table. I developed a number of small software tools to create the tessellations by dissecting these polygons into symmetrical smaller shapes. Using several levels of symmetry, only 18 unique shapes are needed to create the full pattern. These are then arranged, unfolded and used to generate the cut paths for both the paper elements as well as the MDF frames. The paper cones were designed in such way that their elevation varies with their distance from the centre of each parent polygon, thus creating a secondary superimposed pattern in the relief of the tessellation. All of the paper shapes were fabricated by myself using a Craft Robo cutting plotter (and 200+ sheets of paper).
The room divider was manufactured by Metropolitan Works on their large-scale laser cutter. All color palettes which can be interactively applied to the polygons via the iPad UI are sampled from Morris' original wallpaper designs.

The next installation period will be during London Design Festival (23-25 Sep). Also, if you'd like to commission me for similar work do get in touch!

The Apollo 11 visualization draws together social and technical data from the 1969 moon landing in a dynamic 2D graphic. The horizontal axis is an interactive timeline. The vertical axis is divided into several sections, each corresponding to a data source. At the top, commentators are present in narratives from Digital Apollo and NASA technical debriefings. Just below are the members of ground control. The middle section is a log-scale graph stretching from Earth (~10E9 ft. away) to the Moon. Utterances from the landing CAPCOM, Duke, the command module pilot, Collins, the mission commander, Armstrong, and the lunar module pilot, Aldrin, are plotted on this graph. The graph is partially overlaid on a composite image of the lunar surface. Data from the Apollo computer systems, the DSKY (display/keyboard interface to the Apollo computer) and the AGC (Abort Guidance Computer) occupies the bottom of the visualization. Each circle on the graph represents an utterance by one member of the team or ground control, with the size of the circle proportional to the length of the utterance. Lines connecting subsequent utterances represent inquiries and responses between team members. Specific events are labeled, such as computer program changes and program alarms. During a real-time playback, the white line moves across the horizontal axis as audio plays, and the crew’s specific utterances are spelled out to the right. In sync with the human dialog, the AGC and DSKY display values and modes. In these dynamics, one can trace the trading of workload and authority during the critical final phases of landing, and how that workload was offloaded from the lunar module to Houston in response to the program alarms.
