Footage shows boat survivors reaching Sicily, and the island of Lampedusa where bodies have been covered and lined up, as Alan Johnston reports At least 82 people have died after a boat carrying African migrants sank off the southern Italian island of Lampedusa, the island\'s mayor says. More than 140 have been rescued but hundreds are missing, officials say. Passengers reportedly threw themselves into the sea as the vessel got into trouble and Italian officials were quoted as saying that dozens of people were still in the water. Earlier this week, 13 migrants drowned while trying to reach Sicily. There are reports that a fire broke out on board, before the boat sank. There are believed to have been around 500 people on board. Local media reports say that at least one child and a pregnant woman are among the dead. \

Venite a vedere. A boat carrying as many as 500 people capsized and caught fire off the Italian island of Lampedusa. The official death toll stood at 94 -- down one from earlier reports -- but that did not include an estimated 20 newly discovered bodies that remain in the water, the coast guard said. At least 151 people had been rescued in the ongoing operation, the coast guard said. Lampedusa, not far from Sicily and the closest Italian island to Africa, has become a destination for tens of thousands of refugees seeking to enter European Union countries -- and such deadly shipwrecks are all too common. The latest boat to sink is thought to have been carrying up to 500 people. Those aboard include Eritreans, Somalis and Ghanaians, the coast guard said, and the boat is believed to have launched from Libya's coast. The vessel sank near Rabbit Beach, also known as Rabbit Island, which was recently voted one of the best beaches in the world by Trip Advisor. The survivors are being taken to Lampedusa's main port, where authorities have the facilities to help them. The bodies of those who didn't make it are also being moved there. Images from the scene showed some lined up in body bags on a quayside.

Footage shows boat survivors reaching Sicily, and the island of Lampedusa where bodies have been covered and lined up, as Alan Johnston reports At least 82 people have died after a boat carrying African migrants sank off the southern Italian island of Lampedusa, the island's mayor says. "The immense tragedy at Lampedusa... is unbearable for any human being," Transport Minister Maurizio Lupi said, according to Reuters. The mayor of Lampedusa, Giusi Nicolini, described the scene as a "continuous horror". At this time of year, when the Mediterranean tends to be calmer, vessels carrying migrants from Africa and the Middle East land on Italy's southern shores almost every day, the BBC's Alan Johnston reports from Rome. But often the vessels are overcrowded and are not seaworthy. Over the years many have died when their boats have sunk, our correspondent adds. The UN said almost 500 people were reported dead or missing at sea during 2012 in attempts to reach Europe. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKyAeCiXq3Q http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iB1FkHtlbO4 FAIR USE NOTICE: This Video may contain copyrighted (© ) material the use of which has not always been specifically authorized by the copyright owner.
