Sinfonietta (subtitled "Military Sinfonietta" or "Sokol Festival"), written in 1926.
00:00 - I. Allegretto — Allegro maestoso (Fanfare)
02:25 - II. Andante — Allegretto (The Castle, Brno)
08:35 - III. Moderato (The Queen's Monastery, Brno)
13:58 - IV. Allegretto (The Street Leading to the Castle)
17:02 - V. Andante con moto (The Town Hall, Brno)
The Sinfonietta is a very expressive and festive, late work for large orchestra (of which 25 are brass players). It is dedicated "To the Czechoslovak Armed Forces" and Janáček said it was intended to express "contemporary free man, his spiritual beauty and joy, his strength, courage and determination to fight for victory." It started by Janáček listening to a brass band, becoming inspired to write some fanfares of his own. When the organisers of the Sokol Gymnastic Festival approached him for a commission, he developed the material into the Sinfonietta. He later dropped the word military.
The work is typical of Janáček's tight construction, the material of each movement deriving from the opening motif. It features several variants based on Janáček's original fanfare.
- The first movement is scored only for brass and percussion.
- The second movement begins with a rapid ostinato from the wind, but later has a more lyrical episode.
- The third begins quietly in the strings, but is interrupted by a stern figure in the trombones, leading to another fast dance-like passage.
- In the fourth movement, Janáček celebrates the newly liberated Czechoslovakia with a joyous trumpet fanfare.
- The finale begins in the key of E-flat minor with a calm retrograde version of the opening melody. However, this quickly moves into a triumphant finale, the return of the opening fanfare decorated with swirling figures in the strings and wind.
The first performance was in Prague on 26 June 1926 under Václav Talich.
A famous usage of the opening of Sinfonietta was by the progressive rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer for the song "Knife-Edge" on their debut album.

From the House of the Dead (Z mrtvého domu in Czech) is an opera by Leoš Janáček, in three acts. The libretto was translated and adapted by the composer from the novel by Dostoyevsky. It was the composer's last opera, premiered on 12 April 1930 in Brno, two years after his death.
Janáček worked on this opera knowing that it would be his last, and for it he broke away from the habit he had developed of creating characters modeled on his love interest Kamila Stösslová, although the themes of loneliness and isolation can clearly be seen as a response to her indifference to his feelings. There is only one female character, and the setting, a Siberian prison, presents a large ensemble cast instead of one or several prominent leads. There is no narrative to the work as a whole, but individual characters narrate episodes in their lives, and there is a "play-within-a-play" in Act 2.
From the House of the Dead was virtually finished when Janáček died. Two of his students, believing the orchestration was incomplete, "filled out" large portions of the score and adapted the ending to be more optimistic in tone. In addition to the work of Bretislav Bakala, Ota Zitek made changes to the text and sequence of events in the opera. Decades later, a version closer to the composer's intentions superseded that version, and it is the one most often heard today. Some productions, however, still use the earlier version's ending to lessen the bleakness of the story.

04:47 - II. Con moto
08:58 - III. Con moto - Vivo - Andante
12:51 - IV. Con moto - (Adagio) - Più mosso
The composition was inspired by Leo Tolstoy's novella The Kreutzer Sonata. (The novella was in turn inspired by Beethoven's Violin Sonata No. 9, known as the Kreutzer Sonata from the name of its dedicatee, Rodolphe Kreutzer.) Janáček also used the Tolstoy novel in 1908-1909 when it inspired him to compose a Piano Trio in three movements, now lost. Surviving fragments of the Trio suggest that it was quite similar to the surviving quartet, and reconstructions as a piano trio have been performed.
"I was imagining a poor woman, tormented and run down, just like the one the Russian writer Tolstoy describes in his Kreutzer Sonata", Janáček confided in one of his letters to his young friend Kamila Stösslová. In the music of the quartet is depicted psychological drama containing moments of conflict as well as emotional outbursts, passionate work rush towards catharsis and to final climax. The thematic idea central to the whole work is very similar to the theme of the composer's Danube Symphony (1923--25).
Using a principle of thematic montage, the quartet almost abandons the fields of traditional harmony, homophony and counterpoint and instead makes free with the varied sonic factors typical of Janáček, including his characteristic modal inflections. The première of the Quartet was given on 17 October 1924 by the Czech Quartet at a concert of the 'Spolek pro moderní hudbu' (Contemporary Music Society) at the Mozarteum in Prague. A pocket score of the work was published in April 1925 by Hudební matice.

Emilia Marty: Anja Silja (soprano)
Albert Gregor: Kim Begley (tenor)
Baron Prus: Victor Braun (barítono)
Dr. Kolenatý: Andrew Shore (barítono)
Vítek: Anthony Roden (tenor)
Kristina: Manuela Kriscak (soprano)
Janek: Christopher Ventris (tenor)
Hauk-Šendorf: Robert Tear (tenor)
Chambermaid: Susan Gorton (mezzo-soprano)
Stage Hand: Henry Waddington
Cleaner: Menai Davies
Celeste: Jonathan Hinden
The London Philharmonic Orchestra & Glyndebourne Festival Opera

Leoš Janáček’s String Quartet No. 1, "Kreutzer Sonata", was written in a very short space of time, between 13 and 28 October 1923, at a time of great creative concentration.
"I was imagining a poor woman, tormented and run down, just like the one the Russian writer Tolstoy describes in his Kreutzer Sonata", Janáček confided in one of his letters to his young friend Kamila Stösslová.

It seems there's less need to fret when you hear cellist Matt Haimovitz and pianist Christopher O'Riley. Some 15 years ago, they were already chipping away at the barriers — both real and perceived — between classical and pop.
Haimovitz played Bach in barrooms across America, and O'Ril

Janáček – Glagolitic Mass, The Eternal Gospel / Tomáš Netopil

Leoš Janáček – Glagolitic Mass (the “September 1927” version – world premiere recording), The Eternal Gospel (1914) – Legend for soloists, mixed choir and orchestra, based on Jaroslav Vrchlický’s poem.
Glagolitic Mass: Andrea Danková – soprano, Jana Sýkorová – alto, Tomáš Juhás – tenor, Jozef Benci – bass. The Eternal Gospel: Pavel Černoch – tenor, Alžběta Poláčková – soprano.
Prague Philharmonic Choir, chorus master: Lukáš Vasilek, Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, conductor: Tomáš Netopil
In the wake of the highly acclaimed recording of Janáček’s symphonic works (Sinfonietta, Taras Bulba, etc., SU 4131; Orchestral Choice, Gramophone, August 2013), Tomáš Netopil and the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra have focused on the composer’s vocal- instrumental pieces. The Glagolitic Mass is a generally known work, yet not in the composer’s original “September 1927” version, as it was performed at the premiere in Brno, which has been recorded for the very first time for this CD. It is fascinating to observe how many distinct traits of Janáček’s expressive musical language have vanished from the work as a result of its later modifications. The Eternal Gospel, on the other hand, is a piece virtually unknown worldwide (the only previous Supraphon recording was made almost fifty years ago). Janáček was inspired by, and created the libretto on the basis of, Jaroslav Vrchlický’s poem about the medieval monk Joachim de Fiore, to whom an angel appeared, bringing tidings of the arrival of a realm of love. Janáček worked on the piece concurrently with the opera The Excursion of Mr. Brouček to the Moon and completed it in the spring of 1914, a few months prior to the outbreak of World War I. Netopil’s new recording may facilitate bringing the remarkable work back to concert stages.
A premiere recording of the Glagolitic Mass’s original version.

Whether it's warranted or not, classical music wonks are perennially worried about the next generation of fans.
It seems there's less need to fret when you hear cellist Matt Haimovitz and pianist Christopher O'Riley. Some 15 years ago, they were already chipping away at the barriers — both real and perceived — between classical and pop.
Haimovitz played Bach in barrooms across America, and O'Riley (who hosts From The Top, NPR's classical radio show for young musicians) began including his own sophisticated transcriptions of songs by Radiohead and Elliott Smith in his recitals. On their double album Shuffle.Play.Listen., music by Stravinsky and Astor Piazzolla mingles with Cocteau Twins and Arcade Fire.
Comfortably ensconced behind Bob Boilen's desk, the duo plays a typically diverse set. The central work, "The Orchard," is a collaboration between Philip Glass and West African composer Foday Musa Suso. It unfolds like a lullaby, as the piano's rocking bass line provides a mesmerizing foundation for the cello's wistful song high above. Surrounding it are lyricism and outbursts by Beethoven, from his Cello Sonata No. 4 (sounding distinctly 20th century), and a cinematic movement from Leoš Janáček's Pohádka, where heart-melting melodies clash with nervous energy. -- TOM HUIZENGA
