AIM

The aim of the Deaths In Custody Watch Committee (WA) Inc is to monitor and ensure the effective implementation of the 339 Recommendations of the Royal Commission into Aborignal Deaths in Custody (1991 RCIADIC) 'the Recommendations' in Western Australia.

OBJECTIVES

  • To do all things and take all steps, legally within our power to promote, strengthen, defend and further the human rights of prisoners, ex-prisoners, detainees, juveniles in custody and their families and all Australians.
  • To educate the public, or any section of it, on the words and the spirit of the 1991 RCIADIC Recommendations and foster support for their implementation.
  • To develop strong and lasting partnerships with any institution or organisation that has similar objectives to, or compatible with the Committee.
  • To attract and encourage financial assistance such as, donations, gifts, bequests, endowments, trusts and other funding assistance that support the work of the Committee.
  • To raise financeĀ  through sponsorship and grants and other means for project development and implementation.
  • To disseminate, whether by written publication or otherwise, information and material of any nature whatsoever relating to the support and implementation of the Recommendations in Western Australia.
  • To monitor the progress of all Bodies responsible for the implementation of the Recommendations, take all possible measures to ensure they fullfill their responsability and to oversee the implementation of the Recommendations.
  • To formulate and recommend to all appropriate bodies any measures directed to the implementation of the Recommendations, and to press for their adoptions.
  • To do all things, and take all steps, legally within our power to foster public support for the reconciliation of Indigenous Australians with the non-Indigenous population and the achievement of justice for all Australians.
  • To run and maintain a strong grass roots, community based membership scheme which reflects the aims and objectives of the organisation.
  • To relieve suffering, poverty, sickness, distress, destitution or helplessness amongst Aboriginal People in the community.
