A jazz vocal by Blossom Dearie was recorded. There have been 6 folk covers of Now At Last - Feist had the album hit - covered by 5 other folk singing girls. Ida Frederike Vermehren, Kate White, Claudia Spokkia Quartarulli, Sam Gaetz and a sweet version by Amanda Jerry (no relation). 5 of these girls hit a different note on "Know" a half tone down from the Bob Haymes original. “Gloria’s Step” was written by jazz bassist, Scott LaFaro, for his last girlfriend, Gloria Gabriel. LaFaro met Gabriel when they were both working with Dick Haymes. Gabriel was one of the Haymes’ back-up dancers at that time. LaFaro and Gabriel started living together on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in 1957 until his untimely early death at age 25 on July 6, 1961. In an interview with Marc Myers on September 22, 2009, jazz pianist and colleague of LaFaro, Don Friedman recalls; “… the song's name originated because he knew the sound of Gloria's footsteps when she came up the stairs to their apartment …”(Marc Myers) First younger sister of Scott LaFaro, Helene LaFaro-Fernandez recalls about Gabriel and LaFaro in her book, Jade Visions; “Gloria told me ‘I could hear him when I came up the stairs. The people in the building just loved hearing him because it wasn’t drums, it wasn’t horns, it was just this beautiful bass. That’s when he wrote ‘Gloria’s Step.’” Helena adds; “He’d always listen excitedly for Gloria’s steps coming up the stairwell.” (Helena) The composition is a 20-measure AB form. In comparison with regular jazz standard tunes characterized by 4-measure sequences, this tune has 5-measure sequences. The A section has rhythm licks in the second and seventh measures; these rhythm licks do not have to be played during the solo. One of the characteristic components of this tune is the five consecutive “minor seventh flat fifth” chords appears in measures 14 to 18 in the B section. The tune will be played with medium-up tempo in swing feel as it was played in the album, Sunday at the Village Vanguard released in 1961. This is a live recording album recorded on June 25, 1961 at the Village Vanguard. Ten days after this gig, LaFaro passed away in a car accident in western New York State, between Geneva and Canandaigua.

Heaven, I'm in heaven
And my heart beats so that I can hardly speak
And I seem to find the happiness I seek
When we're out together dancing cheek to cheek
Heaven, I'm in heaven
And the cares that hung around me through the week
Seem to vanish like a gambler's lucky streak
When we're out together dancing (swinging) cheek to
cheek
Oh I love to climb a mountain
And reach the highest peak
But it doesn't thrill (boot) me half as much
As dancing cheek to cheek
Oh I love to go out fishing
In a river or a creek
But I don't enjoy it half as much
As dancing cheek to cheek
(Come on and) Dance with me
I want my arm(s) about you
That (Those) charm(s) about you
Will carry me through...
(Right up) To heaven, I'm in heaven
And my heart beats so that I can hardly speak
And I seem to find the happiness I seek
When we're out together dancing, out together dancing
(swinging)
Till the end of time,
Long as stars are in the blue,
Long as there's a spring, a bird to sing,
I'll go on loving you.
Till the end of time,
Long as roses bloom in May,
My love for you will grow deeper,
With every passing day.
Till the wells run dry,
And each mountain disappears,
I'll be there for you, to care for you,
Through laughter and through tears.
So, take my heart in sweet surrender,
And tenderly say that I'm,
The one you love and live for,
I WISH I KNEW
Dick Haymes
I wish I knew someone like you could love me
I wish I knew you place no one above me
Did I mistake this for a real romance?
I wish I knew, but only you can answer.
If you don't care, why let me hop[e and pray so
Don't lead me on, if I'm a fool just say so,
Should I keep dreaming on, or just forget you?
It Can't Be Wrong
Dick Haymes (#1 in 1943)
- words by Kim Gannon, music by Max Steiner
- originally written as background music for the film
"Now, Voyager" starring
Bette Davis and Paul Henreid. Lyrics added well after the
film's release.
Wrong
Would it be wrong to kiss
Seeing I feel like this
Would it be wrong to try?
Wrong
Would it be wrong to stay
Here in your arms this way
Under this starry sky?
If it is wrong
Then why were you sent to me
Why am I content to be
With you forever?
When I need you so much
And I have waited so long
It must be right
I'm as restless as a willow in a windstorm, I'm as jumpy as puppet on a string
I'd say that I had spring fever but I know it isn't spring
I am starry eyed and vaguely discontented like a nightingale without a song to sing
O why should I have spring fever when it isn't even spring?
I keep wishing I were someone else, walking down a strange new street
Hearing words that I've never heard from a girl I've yet to meet
I'm as busy as spider spinning daydreams, I'm as giddy as a baby on a swing
I haven't seen a crocus or a rosebud or a robin on the wing
But I feel so gay in a melancholy way that it might as well be spring
It might as well be spring
I'm as busy as spider spinning daydreams
I'm as giddy as a baby on a swing
I haven't seen a crocus or a rosebud or a robin on the wing
But I feel so gay in a melancholy way that it might as well be spring
Laura
Dick Haymes
Words by Johnny Mercer and music by David Raskin.
Theme melody from the film "Laura."
Introduced by Johnny Johnston on radio.
Laura is the face in the misty lights.
Footsteps that you hear down the hall.
The love that floats on a summer night,
That you can never quite recall.
And you see Laura on a train that is passing through.
Those eyes how familiar they seem
She gave your very first kiss to you,
That was Laura but she's only a dream.
It had to be you, it had to be you
I wandered around and finally found the somebody
Who could make me be true, could make me feel blue
And even be glad just to be sad thinkin' of you
Some others I've seen might never be mean
Might never be cross or try to be boss
But they wouldn't do
For nobody else gave me a thrill
With all your faults, I love you still
It had to be you, wonderful you
It had to be you
It had to be you, it had to be you
I wandered around and finally found somebody
Who could make me be true, could make me be blue
And even be glad just to be sad thinkin' of you
Some others I've seen might never be mean
Might never be cross or try to be boss
But they wouldn't do
For nobody else gave me a thrill
With all your faults, I love you still
It had to be you, wonderful you
Each time I look at you is like the first time
Each time you're near me the thrill is new
And there is nothing that I wouldn't do for
The rare delight of the sight of you for
The more I see you, the more I want you
Somehow this feeling just grows and grows
With every sigh I become more mad about you
More lost without you and so it goes
Can you imagine how much I love you?
The more I see you as years go by
I know the only one for me can only be you
My arms won't free you, my heart won't try
I know the only one for me can only be you
Maybe It's Because
Dick Haymes
Music by Johnie Scott
Lyrics by Harry Ruby
Maybe it's because the kiss you gave me
Touched my heart my heart and went right through
I can't tell you why I only know that I
Fell helplessly in love with you
Maybe it's because the song we danced to
Told a story old and new
I can't figure out just why it came about
Or how I fell in love with you
I could say you're grand and therefore
I care for you so
But there is a why and wherefore
And I'd like to know
Maybe it's because the star I wished on
Made a certain wish come true
Or it just could be that you were meant for me
And maybe I was meant for you
Baby I could say you're grand and therefore
Therefore I care for you so
But there is a why and wherefore
And i'd like to know
Maybe it's because the star I wished on
Made a certain a certain wish come true
Or it just could be that you were meant for me
And maybe I was meant for you

hey dad
im writing to you
not to tell you that i still hate you
just to ask you how you feel
and how we fell apart how this fell apart
are you happy out there in this great wide world?
do u think about you sons?
do you miss your little girl?
when you lay your head down how do you sleep at night?
do you even wonder if we're alright?
but we're alright we're alright
~chorus~
its been a long hard road without you by my side
why werent you there the nights that we cried?
you broke my mothers heart
you broke your children for life
its not okay but we're alright
i remember the days you were a hero in my eyes
but those are just a long lost memory of mine
i spent so many years learning how to survive
now im writing just to let you know i'm still alive
the days i spent so cold so hungry
were full of hate i was so angry
the scars run deep inside this tatooed body
theres things i'll take to my grave
but i'm okay i'm okay
~chorus~
sometimes i forgive yeah and theres times i let live
dad i miss you said i miss you
~chorus~
sometimes i forgive yeah and this time i let live
dad i miss you i miss you hey dad
How Are Things in Glocca Morra
Dick Haymes
(words by E.Y. Harburg; music by Burton Lane)
- From "Finian's Rainbow"
I hear a bird, Londonderry bird,
It well may be he's bringing me a cheering word.
I hear a breeze, a River Shanon breeze,
It well may be it's followed me across the seas.
Then tell me please:
How are things in Glocca Morra?
Is that little brook still leaping there?
Does it still run down to Donny cove?
Through Killybegs, Kilkerry and Kildare?
How are things in Glocca Mora?
Is that willow tree still weeping there?
Does that lassie with the twinklin' eye
Come smilin' by and does she walk away,
Sad and dreamy there not to see me there?
So I ask each weepin' willow and each brook along the way,
And each lass that comes a-sighin" Too ra lay
How are things in Glocca Morra this fine day?

Just as you were going, leaving me all at sea
The clouds broke, they broke and oh!
What a break for me
I can see the sun up high
Tho' we're caught in the storm
I can see where you and I
Could be cozy and warm
Let the rain pitter patter
But it really doesn't matter
If the skies are gray
Long as I can be with you it's a lovely day
I can see the sun up high
Tho' we're caught in the storm
I can see where you and I
Could be cozy and warm
Let the rain pitter patter

Love Letters
Dick Haymes
Love letters straight from your heart,
Keep us so near while we're apart,
I'm not alone in the night,
When I can have all the love you write,
I memorize every line,
I kiss the name that you sign,
And darling,
Then I read,
Again from the start,
Love letters straight from your heart.
I guess I'll to dream the rest
If you can't remember the things that we said
Those nights that my shoulder held your sleepy head
If you believe that parting's best
I guess I'll have to dream the rest
I guess I'll have to dream alone
Of honeymoon cruises once dear to my heart
Of one-room apartments where we said we'd start
Of foolish things we planned to own
I guess I'll have to dream alone
I can see that your heart has gone astray
As for me, I'll love you the same old way
I guess I'll have to dream the rest
There'll be no friends waiting to throw shoes and rice
Those heavenly moments, they never come twice
I'm thankful for the hours you've blessed
I guess I'll have to dream the rest
Stars in the sky were dancing
One night perfect for romancing, The night a sinner kissed an angel, He wanted thrills, she wanted love, Oh but his sighs were tender
As he begged her to surrender, The night a sinner kissed an angel, And she believed that it was love.
How was she to know that every lovely vow
Was part of the game he was playing, But to his surprise he realized
Somehow he meant every word he was saying.
Yes, miracles can happen, I know 'cause I saw what happened
If you were the only girl in the world
and I were the only boy
Nothing else would matter in the world today
We could go on loving in the same old way
A garden of Eden just made for two
With nothing to mar our joy
I would say such wonderful things to you
There would be such wonderful things to do
If you were the only girl in the world
and I were the only boy.
There would be a garden of Eden just made for two
With nothing to mar our joy
I would say such wonderful things to you
There would be such wonderful things to do
If you were the only girl in the world
Just as you were going, leaving me all at sea
The clouds broke, they broke and oh!
What a break for me
I can see the sun up high

Till the end of time,
Long as roses bloom in May,
My love for you will grow deeper,
With every passing day.
Till the wells run dry,
And each mountain disappears,
I'll be there for you, to care for you,
Through laughter and through tears.
So, take my heart in sweet surrender,
And tenderly say that I'm,
The one you love and live for,
A small Café‚ Mam'selle, our rendezvous, Mam'selle.
The violins were warm and sweet, and so were you
Mam'selle.
And as the night danced by, a kiss became a sigh,
Your lovely eyes seemed to sparkle just like wine does
No heart ever yearned the way that mine does for you.
And yet I know too well someday you'll say goodbye,
The First Noel, the Angels did say
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep
On a cold winter's night that was so deep.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!
They looked up and saw a star
Shining in the East beyond them far
And to the earth it gave great light
And so it continued both day and night.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!
And by the light of that same star
Three Wise men came from country far
To seek for a King was their intent
And to follow the star wherever it went.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!
This star drew nigh to the northwest
O'er Bethlehem it took its rest
And there it did both Pause and stay
Right o'er the place where Jesus lay.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!
Then entered in those Wise men three
Full reverently upon their knee
And offered there in His presence
Their gold and myrrh and frankincense.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!
Then let us all with one accord
Sing praises to our heavenly Lord
That hath made Heaven and earth of nought
And with his blood mankind has bought.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
The moon was all aglow
But heaven was in your eyes
The night that you told me
Those little white lies
The stars all seemed to know
You didn't mean all those sighs
The night that you told me
Those little white lies
I try, but there's no forgetting
When evenin' appears
I sigh but there's no regretting
In spite of my tears
Who wouldn't believe those lips
Who wouldn't believe those eyes
The night that you told me
Those little white lies
(Instrumental Break)
I try, but there's no forgetting
When evenin' appears
I sigh but there's no regretting
In spite of my tears
The Devil was in your heart
But Heaven was in your eyes
The night that you told me
Those little white lies
Those lies
Long ago and far away
I dreamed a dream one day
And now that dream is here beside me
Long the skies were overcast
But now the clouds have passed
You're here at last!
Chills run up and down my spine
Aladdin's Lamp is mine
The dream I dreamed was not denied me
Just one look and then I knew
That all I longed for
YOU'LL NEVER KNOW
Dick Haymes with The Song Spinners
- written by Mack Gordon and Harry Warren
- from the film "Hello 'Frisco, Hello"
You'll never know just how much I miss you
You'll never know just how much I care
And if I tried, I still couldn't hide my love for you
You ought to know, for haven't I told you so
A million or more times?
You went away and my heart went with you
I speak your name in my every prayer
If there is some other way to prove that I love you
I swear I don't know how
You'll never know if you don't know now
(You went away and my heart went with you
I speak your name in my every prayer)
If there is some other way to prove that I love you
I swear I don't know how
You'll never know if you don't know now
You'll never know if you don't know now
