Remote Controlled Tourists in Melbourne Stuff co nz
In an internet-age twist on 'try-before-you-buy' marketing, would-be visitors to Victoria will be able to deploy "remote-control tourists" wearing webcams to sample activities around Melbourne Every piece of Tourism Victoria's innovative "jigsaw" commercials was so successful they were widely mimicked by other states. Now the body behind what's claimed to be the world's longest-running tourism campaign is switching to remote-control in its latest Melbourne marketing campaign. Tourism Victoria has launched a A$3.6 million ($4.09 million) "virtual tourist experience", part of its "Play Melbourne" campaign. It's dubbed the Remote Control Tourist, which, speaking of jigsaws, claims to be a first in vicarious tourism and one that may well puzzle those still not entirely conversant with social media. The campaign's objective is to attract the interest of digital-savvy young "opinion leaders" in key interstate markets such as Sydney to take a holiday in the Victorian capital renowned for its lashings of culture, coffee and cool. In the new "go before you go" campaign, with goes live at 10am Wednesday, a quartet of young bicycle-pedalling so-called Remote Control Tourists - two males and two females with helmets fitted with video cameras - will be at the disposal of social media devotees for whom Twitter and Facebook are second homes. They'll be able to deploy, via social media, the Remote Control Tourists to Melbourne's tourism delights, such as its laneways, bars and cafes, before actually committing to visiting the city. The Remote Control Tourists' territory will be bounded by an area covering trendy, tourist-friendly inner suburbs such as Collingwood, Fitzroy, Prahran and Carlton. Footage streamed live of the exploits of the Remote Control Tourists on remotrecontroltourist.com will be beamed in real time to tablets, mobiles and laptops. The Remote Control Tourists will be available between 10am and 8pm (midday to 10pm NZT) each day until October 13. Their video cameras have even been tested for night vision in the event they need to shoot inside the city's signature murky laneway bars. "This world-first campaign is all about giving people new reasons to come and visit the latest and greatest our city has to offer by introducing it them virtually first," said Louise Asher, Victoria's Minister for Tourism and Major Events. "We want to spark curiosity and encourage people to tap into their sense of discovery." Social media is increasingly important in the promotion of domestic and international tourism with taxpayer-funded tourism bodies spending millions to inspire Twitter and Facebook fans to visit their destinations. Tourism Australia alone now has nearly 5 million Facebook followers around the world. Tourism Victoria's more conventional television and print-drive promotional campaigns and major events over the past decade, including the jigsaw campaign launched in 1993, have been so successful that Melbourne is now Australia's most popular destination, surpassing even Sydney, Australia's traditional tourism gateway, and the Gold Coast in terms of total visitor nights.- published: 09 Oct 2013

Philippines typhoon death toll doubles Stuff co nz
The death toll from a powerful typhoon that swept the central Philippines nearly doubled overnight, reaching 4,000, as helicopters from a US aircraft carrier and other naval ships began flying food, water and medical teams to ravaged regions. President Benigno Aquino, caught off guard by the scale of the disaster, has been criticised for the slow pace of aid distribution and unclear estimates of casualties, especially in Tacloban, capital of hardest-hit Leyte province. A notice board in Tacloban City Hall estimated the deaths at 4,000 on Friday, up from 2,000 a day before, in that town alone. Hours later, Tacloban mayor Alfred Romualdez apologised and said the toll was for the whole central Philippines. The toll, marked up on a whiteboard, is compiled by officials who started burying bodies in a mass grave on Thursday. Romualdez said some people may have been swept out to sea and their bodies lost after a tsunami-like wall of seawater slammed into coastal areas. One neighbourhood with a population of between 10,000 and 12,000 was now deserted, he said. The City Hall toll was the first public acknowledgement that the number of fatalities would likely far exceed an estimate given this week by Aquino, who said the loss of life from Typhoon Haiyan would be closer to 2,000 or 2,500. Official confirmed deaths nationwide rose by more than 1,000 overnight to 3,621 on Friday after the typhoon, one of the strongest ever recorded, roared across the central Philippines a week ago. Adding to the confusion, the United Nations, citing government figures, put the latest overall death toll at 4,460, but a spokeswoman said it was now reviewing the figure. On Tuesday, Aquino said estimates of 10,000 dead by local officials were overstated and caused by ''emotional trauma''. Elmer Soria, a regional police chief who made that estimate to media, was removed from his post on Thursday. A police spokesman said Soria was due to be transferred to headquarters in Manila. But a senior police official told Reuters he believed Soria was re-assigned because of his unauthorised casualty estimate. HASH(0x22810e4) U.S. HELICOPTERS AID RELIEF EFFORT Stunned survivors in Tacloban said the toll could be many thousands. ''There are a lot of dead people on the street in our neighbourhood, by the trash,'' said Aiza Umpacan, a 27-year-old resident of San Jose, one of the worst-hit neighbourhoods. ''There are still a lot of streets that were not visited by the disaster relief operations. They are just going through the highways, not the inner streets,'' he said. ''The smell is getting worse and we actually have neighbours who have been brought to hospital because they are getting sick.'' The preliminary number of missing as of Friday, according to the Red Cross, rose to 25,000 from 22,000 a day earlier. That could include people who have since been located, it said. The nuclear-powered USS George Washington aircraft carrier and accompanying ships arrived off eastern Samar province on Thursday evening, carrying 5,000 crew and more than 80 aircraft. U.S. sailors have brought food and water ashore in Tacloban and the eastern Samar province town of Guiuan whose airport was a U.S. naval air base in World War Two. The carrier is moored near where U.S. General Douglas MacArthur's force landed on Oct. 20, 1944, in one of the biggest Allied victories. A Norwegian merchant navy training vessel arrived at Tacloban on Friday with goods from the U.N. World Food Programme, including 40 tonnes of rice, medical equipment and 6,200 body bags. Boxes of aid were being unloaded at Tacloban's badly damaged airport, where more than a thousand people queued for hours hoping to evacuate. The tarmac was a hive of activity, with three large South Korean military transport planes joining two U.S. Osprey aircraft and U.S. Navy helicopters unloading and ferrying aid. Hundreds of people, part of nearly a million who have been displaced by the storm, lined up for food and drink at an evacuee processing centre at Mactan Air Base in Cebu, the country's second-biggest city. Some 522 evacuees passed through the centre on Thursday, with hundreds more arriving on Friday, a government coordinator, Erlinda Parame, said. In one room, children huddled on a mud-streaked floor watching cartoons on a small television. Nearby, Gerardo Alvarez, 53, sat strapped to a metal wheelchair, straining against the bandages that restrained him. ''The water is coming! I'm going to die!'' he shouted. The traumatised man had escaped the storm surge from a second-storey window of his Tacloban home while his sister and mother, who were praying downstairs, drowned.- published: 15 Nov 2013

The world's most popular exercise class Stuff co nz
When I was young, I owned a much-loved pair of Noddy shoes that had marked on the toe ''Right'' and ''Left''. Right now, I'm wishing desperately that I still had those red-and-blue shoes as I demonstrate my legendary lack of co-ordination to the other 60-or-so members in a group exercise class. It's my first group class. I've never been one for exercising with others, preferring my own company, either running or cycling. Worryingly, the gym management has put me right in front of the stage from which fitness instructor Yvette Cattana is leading the class. She is a small woman, wearing not much more than a bikini top and short shorts that show off a tanned, extraordinarily toned body. As well as her chiselled abs and boundless energy and enthusiasm, I can't help but notice she is hefting about twice as much weight on her barbell as the embarrassing amount I'm using. But, in general, I'm not in a frame of mind to think about much at all other than trying to follow Cattana's graceful and fluid moves as she powers through the class, somehow maintaining a generous smile throughout. She's extraordinarily encouraging - even to someone with my galumphing ineptitude - and it's clear she genuinely cares that the people in her class have a good and productive time. The class she is teaching is legendary in the fitness business. Called BodyPump, it has demonstrated unusual staying power, still packing them in at more than 14,000 gyms around the world after more than 20 years. If BodyPump were a rock group, it would be the Rolling Stones. Exercise is obviously a ''together'' thing for a lot of people, and BodyPump somehow fulfils that need more than most other classes. It's owned and licensed by fitness behemoth Les Mills, a Kiwi company founded by Phillip Mills and named after his father, a four-time Olympian. One of the secrets to BodyPump's staying power is the degree to which it is standardised. Attend a class in Tokyo, London or Manila and you will get exactly the same experience - the same moves, the same music, even the same exhortations from the trainer. For instance, today Cattana is teaching the 88th official release of BodyPump in Australia. Each release has its own specific music and moves, which instructors spend hours memorising from extensive notes provided by head office in New Zealand. Mills makes no apologies for this formulaic, cookie-cutter approach on which he has built an empire. ''People like standardised products,'' he says. ''It's a terrible comparison to make but [it's] your McDonald's concept. If you can standardise the components it guarantees a good experience.'' And with such success comes the inevitable slew of imitators, which Les Mills spends a lot of time and effort closing down. ''We spend millions protecting our IP and trademarks,'' says Mills. ''We have a service that we use around the world that takes down illegal postings of our stuff. In the first two months we employed them they took down 7000 listings of people trying to sell our stuff illegally, mainly in China.'' Ad Feedback The longevity of BodyPump is a clear exception in a fickle industry governed by trends and fashions that come and go almost with the seasons. Almost as soon as news reports touting ''This year's hot new exercise trend'' appear, the lycra crowd moves on in search of something new. No one seriously expects, say, AntiGravity Yoga (you hang upside down in something like a giant nappy suspended from the ceiling) or Aqua Cycling (yep, bikes in a pool) to stick around for long. Even the mad craze for Zumba that for a while threatened to take over the world appears to be on the wane. Exercise physiologist Kate Pumpa, from the University of Canberra, says once you strip away the frills, group exercise classes can be separated into two categories. ''There are the ones that work you aerobically, like your riding or running classes or step,'' she says. ''The other side is more resistance and strength-based classes. They all boil down really to these two things. Some classes have a combination of both.'' Mills agrees that activities that stray too far from the basics are unlikely to last. ''When the classes get too wildly creative and different they often won't pick up on a big enough following to maintain them over time and a lot of classes tend to come and go.'' But regardless of the bells and whistles, one overarching trend that most of the fitness industry agrees is here to stay is exercising with others, be it in large or small groups. ''You don't have to go to a gym to do exercise but for some people it's a means to have a commitment,'' says Pumpa. ''If you hopped on a treadmill you might walk for 10 minutes then leave, but when you are in a class dynamic and everyone is working out together, you may feel a bit more guilty if you leave halfway through.'' For other people there is also a social aspect to group classes that draws them in.- published: 02 Jan 2014
