Richard M. Stallman is the founder of the GNU Project, launched in 1984 to develop the free software operating system GNU. The name ``GNU'' is a recursive acronym for ``GNU's Not Unix''. GNU is free software: everyone is free to copy it and redistribute it, as well as to make changes either large or small. Non-free software keeps users divided and helpless, forbidden to share it and unable to change it. A free operating system is essential for people to be able to use computers in freedom. Today, Linux-based variants of the GNU system, based on the kernel Linux developed by Linus Torvalds, are in widespread use. Big Gun: Richard Stallman Richard Stallman is a notable programmer whose major accomplishments include GNU Emacs, the GNU C Compiler, and the GNU Debugger. GNU ? In 1985, he published the GNU Manifesto, which outlined his motivation for creating a free operating system called GNU, which would be compatible with Unix. The name GNU is a recursive acronym for "GNU's Not Unix". Soon after, he incorporated the non-profit Free Software Foundation (FSF) to employ free software programmers and provide a legal framework for the free software community. In 1989 Stallman invented and popularized the concept of copyleft. By then, much of the GNU system had been completed, with the notable exception of a kernel. This final gap was filled by Linux in 1991, written independently of the GNU project using the GNU development tools and system libraries. The arrival of Linux, and the availability of a completely free operating system created some confusion, however, and most people now use the name Linux to refer to the whole operating system. Stallman has attempted to change this by asking people to call the operating system "GNU/Linux". Doing it:Firefox Mozilla Firefox. It's an Internet browser, so you use it to surf the 'net -- just like Internet Explorer, or Safari if you use the Macintosh operating system. The UWCSE Band is a computer science parody rock band composed of grad students (and a postdoc!) from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Washington, Seattle. We perform mostly at department events, and our music makes fun of anything and everything relating to computer science, programming, and life as a grad student. This performance took place during the 2009 Visit Days for prospective students. This video illustrates the use of an on-line time-optimal path tracking method developed at the ACM research group of the KULeuven ( www.mech.kuleuven.be ). The video shows the case of a robotic manipulator carrying out a writing task whereby the path data is generated on-line by human demonstration. The human demonstrator writes Optec (acronym for Optimization in Engineering Center, homes.esat.kuleuven.be ) on the tablet, while the motion of the robot along the path is optimized on-line using a recursive log-barrier based solution method and executed almost simultaneously. Isolating Cluster Jobs for Performance and Predictability, Brooks Davis (DCBSDCon 2009) At The Aerospace Corporation, we run a large FreeBSD based computing cluster to support engineering applications. These applications come in all shapes, sizes, and qualities of implementation. To support them and our diverse userbase we have been searching for ways to isolate jobs from one another in ways that are more effective than Unix time sharing and more fine grained than allocating whole nodes to jobs. In this paper we discuss the problem space and our efforts so far. These efforts include implementation of partial file systems vitalization and CPU isolation using CPU sets. Source: Jason Dixon
