This is a quick post-race interview of one of the team members of Tokai Challenger of Tokai University at World Solar Challenge 2013 at Hindmarsh Square of Adelaide, Australia, on Oct. 11, 2013. Tokai Challenger of Tokai University has always been a strong contender at World Solar Challenge (solar car race of 3000km between Darwin and Adelaide, Australia), Its design philosophy (from http://www.worldsolarchallenge.org/team/view/51), listed below: _______________________________________________________________________ Design Philosophy We understand that WSC 2013 regulation brings solar cars closer to us. We can make a practical approach to make a four wheel solar car and a big cockpit in reality. However, the increase of air resistance and weight makes the challenge more difficult to achieve a higher speed. We cooperate with Japanese corporations to design new and unique solar cars. For instance, the top level of energy conversion of HIT Solar Modules and the world's highest level of energy storage devices by using Panasonic Li-Ion Battery is one of the uniqueness key for building a successful car. Moreover, aiming to use a special and light carbon-fiber (TORAYCA) made by 'TORAY' makes us succeed to reduce the body weight effectively. In addition, a unique body design can increase the generated solar power and decrease the drag to give a great performance. ______________________________________________________________________ Tokai Challenger Team of Japan historically has worked very closely with Panasonic, utilizing the solar cells/panels and batteries from Panasonic. In World Solar Challenge 2013, it was unfortunate that Tokai Challenger encountered a punctured tired during the race. But the excellent performance of this solar car was still able to arrive second among 38-40 teams/cars.
