Jack Kelly (September 16, 1927 – November 7, 1992) was an American film and television actor most noted for the role of "Bart Maverick" in the TV series Maverick, which ran on ABC from 1957 to 1962. Kelly shared the series, rotating as the lead from week to week, first with James Garner as Bret Maverick (1957–1960) then with Roger Moore as Beau Maverick (1960–1961) and Robert Colbert as Brent Maverick (1961; for two episodes), before becoming the only Maverick (alternating with reruns from the Garner era) in the fifth season.

Kelly later became a politician, serving as mayor of Huntington Beach, California from 1983 to 1986.^[1]

Early life[link]

Born John Augustus Kelly, Jr.^[2][3] in Astoria, Queens, New York, one of four children, to Ann Mary "Nancy" (née Walsh) and John Augustus Kelly, Sr. "Jackie," as he was called as a child,^[4] came from a prominent theatrical family. His mother, Nan Kelly, had been a popular stage actress and John Robert Powers model. Kelly's father was theater ticket broker, and after he moved the family to Hollywood, went into the real estate business.^[5] His sister, Oscar-nominated actress Nancy Kelly, was a prominent movie child star turned leading lady. His other two siblings, Carole and William Clement (25 July 1934-6 April 1983), also tried show business.^[6] When they were children his mother would not let them eat meat and would never gave them medicine when they were sick.^[4]

Career[link]

Kelly made his film debut in an uncredited role in the 1939 biopic The Story of Alexander Graham Bell, opposite Don Ameche and Loretta Young. After appearing in several films and television series, Kelly landed his first starring role in a television series in 1955 with a one-season effort based on the 1942 feature film Kings Row. Kelly played Dr. Parris Mitchell, a young psychiatrist coping with the narrow-minded environment of his small town. The series was one-third of the Warner Bros. Presents wheel series, hosted by Gig Young. It rotated at the scheduled hour of 7:30 Eastern on Tuesday with a similar television version of the popular movie Casablanca as well as the new Western series Cheyenne starring Clint Walker.

After the series ended in 1956, Kelly went on to appear in Forbidden Planet (1956) and She-Devil (1957), along with guest roles on Fireside Theater, Schlitz Playhouse of Stars, Lux Video Theatre, and Gunsmoke.

The various anti-heroic Mavericks were dapper professional poker-players roaming the Old West with the benefit of superb scripts. The series had an enormous cultural impact during a time when there were only three television networks and most cities had only three TV channels to choose from.

Maverick's demanding filming schedule had caused production to lag behind early on. The producers decided to give Bret Maverick a brother so as not to run out of episodes long before the end of the season. Thus, Kelly was introduced as Bart Maverick in "Hostage!", the eighth episode of the series. While he may not have matched Garner's popularity on Maverick, Kelly did have his enthusiastic admirers. Possessing a deep voice, a John Barrymore-like profile and an easy-going screen presence, Kelly enjoyed an attentive following among female viewers of the series. Series creator Roy Huggins was extremely critical of Kelly's acting in Huggins' Archive of American Television interview, noting that Kelly "dropped a funny line like a load of coal," but mentioned that Kelly was more amusing than Garner "off camera."

Kelly shared the lead with James Garner in one of the show's most-discussed episodes, "Shady Deal at Sunny Acres", on which the first half of the 1973 movie The Sting appears to be based. The pair also co-starred in the famous "Pappy" episode in which Garner played the brothers' much-quoted father Beauregard "Pappy" Maverick, in addition to his regular role of Bret. Aided by trick photography, Bret and Pappy play cards together in one scene (Kelly had a dual role in the episode as well, playing Bart and elderly Uncle Bentley Maverick). Bart also rescued Bret at the climax of "Duel at Sundown", in which Garner fist fought guest star Clint Eastwood. Since Garner enjoyed seniority on the series, he had first choice of which part he would play in the two-brother episodes, which delineated the brothers as "Maverick 1" and "Maverick 2" in the scripts, giving him an enormous advantage.

Although the "solo" episodes in which Bart appeared tended to be somewhat more dramatic than the Bret episodes, Kelly displayed his comedic skills in lighter Maverick outings such as "Hadley's Hunters" and "The People's Friend." Kelly actually appeared in more episodes of Maverick than James Garner, who left the show following a contract dispute in 1960. Kelly appeared in 75 episodes; Garner in only 55. In the wake of Garner's departure, Roger Moore stepped in to play Bart's cousin Beau Maverick in fourteen episodes, sharing the screen with Kelly in three of them, while Robert Colbert appeared in two installments as a third brother named Brent, one of which briefly featured Kelly.

When Maverick ended in 1962, Kelly continued acting with roles in a number of films and television shows. In 1962, he played the lead in Red Nightmare (also known as The Commies Are Coming, the Commies Are Coming in its derisive 1985 video re-release incarnation) a Cold War film narrated by Jack Webb in which Kelly's character wakes up one morning to discover that America has been taken over by Communists.

On December 30, 1963, Kelly appeared with Barbara Bain in "The Fenton Canaby Story" on ABC's Wagon Train. Canaby is a former trailmaster with a dark secret he refuses to discuss. He is attracted to Lucy Garrison, a young woman with her own questionable past played by Barbara Bain, long before Mission: Impossible!. Virginia Gregg plays Grace Lowe, who blames Canaby for her husband's death.^[7]

Kelly co-starred in Commandos (1968) opposite Lee Van Cleef, and as a villain dressed almost exactly like Bart Maverick in Young Billy Young (1969) with Robert Mitchum. From 1969 to 1971, Kelly hosted the NBC daytime game show Sale of the Century but was eventually replaced by Joe Garagiola. He was also briefly a series regular in Get Christie Love! (1974) and The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries (1978), and performed many lucrative television commercial voice-overs.

In 1977 Kelly appeared as obstreperous villains for a few moments in two Rockford Files episodes starring James Garner. The first appearance was in the season 3 episode, "The Becker Connection," and the second was the first show of season 4, "Beamer's Last Case" as a jealous husband. In 1978, he briefly appeared as Bart Maverick and was again paired with Garner in the TV-movie The New Maverick and in Garner's TV series Bret Maverick (1981; Kelly appeared momentarily at the end of the final episode of the show and would have become a regular had it been renewed). Kelly also showed up on a 1983 episode of The Fall Guy, costumed as Maverick but basically playing himself in a storyline that rounded-up many classic TV cowboys.

In 1991, he reprised the role of Bart Maverick one last time in the TV movie The Gambler Returns: The Luck of the Draw, a Kenny Rogers vehicle briefly featuring more than a dozen 1950s television series cowboys. Kelly's brief dialogue consisted almost exclusively of variations on the phrase, "you can't have a real poker game without a Maverick."

Business and politics[link]

Kelly's acting roles became less frequent in the late 1970s as he became more involved in real estate and local politics. He started buying real estate in Huntington Beach, California in the mid 1960s, and moved there permanently in 1971.^[8]

He formed August II, Inc., to hold the real estate assets in June 1965 in Huntington Beach.^[9] His wife, Jo, became a real estate broker and did much of the business management of the real estate business, especially while Kelly was involved with Huntington city government.^[5]

During the 1980s and early 1990s he served as city councilman and mayor in Huntington Beach,^[1] campaigning with the slogan "Let Maverick Solve Your Problems."^[10]

Personal life and death[link]

Kelly married actress May Wynn (Donna Lee Hickey) on October 14, 1956. They separated in February 1964 and were divorced on October 19, 1964. She stated in court that they had been arguing a lot the last two years and he started staying out all night.^[11]

Following the divorce he later dated Karen Steele for a short time.^[12]

He married Jo Ann Smith in Las Vegas, Nevada on October 16, 1969.^[13] The following November their daughter Nicole was born.

On April 28, 1992 he suffered a heart attack.^[14] Jack Kelly died of a stroke at Humana Hospital in Huntington Beach, California, November 7, 1992. In addition to his sister Nancy he was survived by his second wife, Jo, and their daughter, Nicole.^[1]

Jo became an "extra" in film and television productions, helps others learn the business, and wrote a book about it, The Truth about Being an Extra (2006).^[15]

His daughter, Nicole K. Garner, is the founder of and executive producer at August II Productions.^[9]

Jack Reacher is a fictional character created by British author Jim Grant who writes under the pen name of Lee Child.

Biographical information[link]

Jack (None) Reacher is a former United States Army Military Police Major. He was born on a military base in Berlin in 1960. A graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, he served 13 years in the Military Police, during which time he became part of a fictional military police unit, the 110th Special Investigations Unit, formed to handle exceptionally tough cases, especially those involving members of the United States Army Special Forces.

Though he was demoted from Major to Captain in the prequel novel The Enemy, he regained the rank of Major by the time he mustered out in 1997. He received many military awards during his career, including the Silver Star, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Soldier's Medal, the Bronze Star, and a Purple Heart for wounds sustained in the bombing of the US Marine barracks in Beirut in 1983.^{[citation needed]}

Since leaving the Army, Reacher has been a drifter. He wanders throughout the United States because he felt he never got to know his own country, having spent his youth living overseas on military bases. He usually travels by hitchhiking or bus. As a drifter, the only possessions he carries are money, a foldable toothbrush and, after 9/11, an expired passport. He wears his clothing for 2–3 days before discarding it, usually purchasing new clothing cheaply from chain outlets. He has no steady income and lives on savings in his bank account and part-time jobs. At various points during the series, his bank account is supplemented by taking money from his enemies (this occurs most notably in Bad Luck and Trouble). Reacher knows how to drive although he is admittedly not a very good driver. He has never possessed a driver's license.

Skills[link]

Reacher's demeanor is stoic, and he does not talk much. He has a propensity for saying "that's for damn sure". Reacher frequently does not answer when people make statements or ask questions, nodding or shrugging, preferring the other party to fill the silence. A recurring line in the novels is "Reacher said nothing". He is cool-headed and rarely becomes visibly angry, one of the few exceptions to this occurs in Nothing to Lose when he erupts in rage at an apathetic hospital employee for not ensuring that comatose Iraq War veteran received the proper care. Reacher has the uncanny ability to know what time it is, at any time of the day, without referring to a clock. He often uses his internal clock as an alarm, enabling him to wake up at any time he chooses. It is revealed in Bad Luck and Trouble that Reacher has a fascination with mathematics. Reacher drinks coffee constantly. With this, he quotes in The Enemy: "The Reacher brothers' need for caffeine makes heroin addiction look like an amusing little take-it-or-leave-it sideline". He is also fond of breakfast foods, especially eggs, pancakes, and bacon. Reacher only occasionally uses profanity.

Reacher is highly skilled at fighting, although he is not an expert in any particular martial art. Reacher's favorite techniques include elbow strikes, uppercuts, and headbutts. His tremendous strength aids him in fighting, as he is significantly stronger than most of his opponents. As revealed in Nothing to Lose, Reacher hates confronting an opponent armed with a knife. In addition to his fighting prowess, a common element of the Reacher novels is his overall propensity for brutality when necessary. Reacher's capacity for violence is enormous, although those he harms are nearly always villains worthy of what they receive. One notable exception to this was a bartender Reacher encounters during an Army investigation in the prequel novel The Enemy. Reacher badly maims the man in a fight but later learns that he was not involved with the story's antagonists. He was officially reprimanded for this by the Army. In his efforts to protect innocents and stop villains, he has done such things as snap necks, bludgeon skulls, and break knees. Sometimes during the course of a novel, usually toward the end, Reacher calmly kills his foe(s) even after they are no longer a threat, but only if they have committed terrible acts (usually multiple murders) which he feels merit their deaths as justice. Such killings by Reacher are featured in Persuader and Bad Luck and Trouble, among others. In The Hard Way, Reacher is described as completely lacking, "The remorse gene. It just wasn't there."

In Killing Floor, it is revealed that he has a love for music, especially blues music. It was this affinity for the blues that inspired Reacher to get off the bus at the start of Killing Floor and catapulted him into the resulting story. It is also in this novel that Reacher's internal monologue reveals that he has a music collection in his head, which he listens to.

Reacher is always aware of his surroundings; he always sits with his back to the wall, so that he can see those entering a room so he cannot be attacked from behind. He generally likes to be alone, especially in the dark. In 61 Hours, it is stated that an Army psychological study of reactions to fear in children showed him as having abnormally fast reflexes and aggression levels at the age of six.

As revealed in Nothing to Lose, Reacher holds no religious beliefs and is openly scornful of the fundamentalist Christianity espoused by the novel's antagonist. Reacher also shows his disdain for religion when in Bad Luck and Trouble he is traveling to Los Angeles via airline, and he states that he does not like Alaskan Airlines "because they put scripture cards on the meal trays."

Reacher is a skilled marksman. In addition to being the only non-Marine to win the Marine Corps Wimbledon Cup rifle competition, he also won the US Army Pistol Championship and served as a pistol instructor. Throughout the novels, Reacher has shown great skill in the use of handguns, rifles, sub-machine guns, and shotguns.

Physical appearance[link]

Reacher is a giant, standing at 6' 5" tall (1.96m) with a 50-inch chest, and weighing between 210 and 250 pounds (100–115 kg). He has ice-blue eyes and dirty blond hair. He has very little body fat, and his muscular physique is completely natural (he reveals in Persuader, he has never been an exercise enthusiast.) He is exceptionally strong but is not a good runner.^[3] Reacher is strong enough to break a man's neck with one hand (Bad Luck and Trouble) and kill a villain with a single punch to the head (Running Blind and 61 Hours) or chest (Worth Dying For). In a fight against a 7 foot, 400 lb steroid-using thug (Persuader), Reacher was able to lift his opponent into the air and drop him on his head.

Reacher has various scars, most notably a scar on his abdomen caused by a bombing in Lebanon.^[4] He also has a 3-4 inch thin white scar that intersects his shrapnel scar that he received during a knife fight with Al-Qaeda operative Lila Hoth. Reacher mentions how the rough stitch work from his existing scar helped decrease the severity of his most recent attack. However, the cut did produce a deep, serious gash that led to Reacher passing out from blood loss.^[5] He also has a scar on his chest from a .38 bullet,^[6] a tear drop burn scar from close range gunshot that crossed his chest at point blank range,^[7] and one on his arm where his brother struck him with a chisel in his youth.^[8]

Family[link]

Reacher's mother Josephine Moutier Reacher, born in France, was 30 years old when Reacher was born. She met Reacher's father in Korea and married him in Holland (The Enemy). She was widowed in 1988, and died in 1990 at the age of 60 of cancer. When she was only 13, she joined the French Resistance and under the alias "Beatrice" worked with Le Chemin de Fer Humain (the Human Railroad), saving 80 men. She garroted a schoolmate, a boy who threatened to give her up to the Nazis. Josephine Moutier was awarded the Médaille de la Résistance (the Resistance Medal) for her heroism.

Reacher's father (Stan Reacher) was a Marine captain, who served in Korea and Vietnam. His service in the United States Marine Corps kept his family continually moving all around the world to various military bases. He died in 1988. When describing his father, Jack is quoted as saying, "(He was) a stone-cold killer. Next to him I look like Liberace.^[9]" After military service, "there was no place left for people like him.^[10]"

Jack had only one sibling, brother Joe Reacher. Two years older than Jack, Joe was born on a military base in the Philippines. Jack used to help Joe beat up the kids who gave him trouble in school, and vice versa. Joe was also a West Point graduate, and spent five years in Military Intelligence before joining the Treasury Department. He never won any of the "good medals", only the "junk awards." Joe died at the age of 38, having arranged a meeting with a potential investigation subject (see Killing Floor). Because he was killed in the line of duty, his name can be found on the Treasury's Roll of Honor.

• Mary Ellen Froelich, (35), is a Secret Service Agent, charged with protecting the Vice President. She has short fair hair, and is quietly confident. She dated Joe Reacher. She appeared in Without Fail.
• Susan Duffy, (early thirties), is a rogue agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration. She is pale, slim, and attractive, and appeared in Persuader.
• Lieutenant Summer, (25), is an African-American Lieutenant in the Army Military Police. She is petite and slender, and appeared in The Enemy.
• Eileen Ann Hutton, (age unknown), is a Brigadier General in the Judge Advocate General's Corps of the US Army. She and Reacher had a relationship prior to, and featured in, One Shot.
• Vaughan, (exact age unknown), is a police officer in Hope, Colorado. She is "probably less than five feet six, probably less than a hundred and twenty pounds, probably less than thirty-five years old" according to Reacher's estimate. Married to a totally incapacitated casualty of the war in Iraq (husband's name is Robert David Vaughan, called David). She befriends Reacher in Nothing to Lose.
• Karla Dixon, (age unknown, possibly late 30s) is a forensic accountant; formerly a Major in the Army and part of Reacher's 'Special Investigators Unit', which he formed and led in the 90s. They are reunited in Bad Luck & Trouble and secretly rekindle an affair, which they regret not starting back in the army. She is described as 'dark, very pretty, comparatively small' and slim. She is extremely good with numbers and shares Reacher's fascination with mathematics.
• Detective Theresa Lee is an NYPD detective who aids Reacher's take down of an Al-Qaeda team in Gone Tomorrow. They had a brief romantic episode before Reacher left to complete his task.
• Lauren Pauling, (early fifties), is an ex-FBI agent who now acts as a private investigator. She often refers to herself as being old. She appears in The Hard Way.
• Susan Turner, (early thirties), is a Major in the US Army and is the current commander of the 110th MP. She is described as a little above average height (5'7"), slender, long dark hair tied back, tanned skin and deep brown eyes. Her face is described as conveying "intelligence and authority and youth and mischief at the same time". Her defining characteristic, however, is her voice ... "warm, a little husky, a little breathy, a little intimate". She appears in 61 Hours.
• Stan Lowrey, (late thirties), is a member of Reacher's old 110th MP unit. He is handsome, youthful, and full of energy. A kind of man that gets the job done. He appears in Bad Luck and Trouble and in the latest novel The Affair.
• Dave O'Donnell, (late thirties), is a member of Reacher's old 110th MP unit. He appears in Bad Luck and Trouble. He carries an army blade in one pocket and a pair of ceramic brass-knuckles in the other.

Travels[link]

His travels around the United States of America, exploring the one country he never got to see in his childhood, are the subject of all the novels so far, with the exception of two prequels, one being The Enemy, which centers on a case he undertook as an investigator in the Military Police in 1990, and the other being The Affair. The novels are set in locales ranging from New York City and Los Angeles to small towns in the American South and Midwest. To date, Reacher's travels outside of the United States have taken him to rural England (The Hard Way) and Paris, France, where Reacher visits his dying mother with his brother.

The Reacher novels are written either in the first-person or third-person. Child says writing in the first person is more natural for him, but writing in the third person gives him more freedom when building up suspense.

After an attempt on his life while being held over the weekend in a state prison, Reacher is determined to figure out what happened. Later he finds out that the person he was framed for murdering was Joe Reacher, his brother. Unknowingly, Jack Reacher had stumbled into one of the biggest counterfeiting schemes in the United States. And takes head on, a vicious and ruthless butchers of a well established town gang operating a massive counterfeit notes racket. This novel is set in the fictional town of Margrave, Georgia.

Whilst helping Holly Johnson, an attractive young woman struggling with her crutches on a Chicago street, they turn around only to discover two handguns pointing at them. Reacher and the woman are thrown into a dark van and taken 2000 miles across America, completely unaware why they were kidnapped and where they are going. Finding themselves trapped in a seemingly remote place, they must work together to find the answers.

Jack and Jodie soon find themselves hunted by a psychopath crippled from Vietnam who has a shadowy business and other secrets to protect. The last thing he's worried about is exactly who picks him up. He never expected it to be somebody like Carmen. She's alone, driving a Cadillac. She's beautiful, young and rich. She has a little girl who is being watched by unseen observers. And a husband who is in jail. Who will beat her senseless when he comes out. If he doesn't kill her first. Reacher is no stranger to trouble. And at Carmen's remote ranch in Echo County there is plenty of it: lies and prejudice, hatred and murder. Reacher can never resist a lady in distress. Her family is hostile, the cops can't be trusted and the lawyers won't help.

Reacher arrives in Atlantic City, New Jersey, after hitching a ride with a couple of aging musicians. He is accosted there by Mary Ellen (M. E.) Froelich, a beautiful secret service agent who managed to track him down. She has a special request for him: she consults him on how he could kill the Vice-President; countering those methods would help her considerably in her job: protecting the Vice-President. He accepts the challenge, and enlists old colleague Frances Neagley to help carry out the mission. Froelich asked Reacher's assistance on this matter because of suspicious and threatening letters which had been sent to the Vice-President but instead intercepted by his protective team. Together, they attempt to find the ones responsible.

Shocked at the accused's request, Reacher sets out to confirm for himself the absolute certainty of the man's guilt, but comes up with more than he bargained for.

Reacher takes the subway late at night, and routinely checks his fellow passengers. Four are okay, but the fifth is not. Checking against his mental list for suicide bombers, he comes to the conclusion that the fifth is one too. He is puzzled with her choice of timing and place, as it is not crowded; on the contrary the subway was exceedingly empty. He reasons with her, but she shoots herself; thereby proving Reacher wrong when he concluded she was a bomber. He is determined to discover why she killed herself and soon uncovers a massive conspiracy stretching from California to New York City to even Afghanistan during the Soviet occupation of that country.

Jack Reacher arrives late one night in a rural Nebraska town. In the town's fading motel bar he overhears a drunk doctor's refusal to attend a domestic abuse. The victim of the abuse is married to the scion of the Duncan clan, which holds that part of Nebraska in its grip, keeping the population cowed and docile. Reacher talks the doctor into doing the right thing, and ends up embroiled in a smuggling ring and an unsolved disappearance from twenty-five years prior.

Worth Dying For was published on 30 September 2010 in the UK^[11] and on 19 October 2010 in the USA.^[12]

The short story "Second Son" is a snapshot of the life of Reacher and his family circa 1974, while they're stationed on a military base in Okinawa. Upon arriving they immediately get into deep trouble that's compounded by some bad news. The action is interspersed with contemplative moments, such as when Jack's grandfather, a prosthetic-limb maker in Paris, recounts that "… a great war leaves a country with three armies: an army of cripples, an army of mourners, and an army of thieves."

March 1997. Six months before the events of Killing Floor. Jack Reacher is still in the army. And there's big trouble in a small town in Mississippi, where a soldier's girlfriend is found with her throat cut from ear to ear. Local trouble? Or is the killer from nearby Fort Kelham, a giant base used by elite Army Rangers? In 1997, Reacher's orders are: go undercover, keep your distance, monitor the investigation. Eventually the army's official investigation produces a cast-iron prime suspect—and so does Reacher's undercover search. But Reacher's answer is not the same as the army's. If he keeps quiet, will he be able to live with himself? And if he speaks out, will the army be able to live with him?

Paramount Pictures recently hired Academy Award nominated screenwriter Josh Olson to adapt One Shot, the ninth book in the series. Christopher McQuarrie, Oscar-winning screenwriter for The Usual Suspects, was then brought in to re-write Olson's draft.^[13] It was announced in July 2011 that Tom Cruise would play Reacher in the movie adaptation of One Shot, even though he has no visible physical or mental representation of the Reacher character.^[14]

Author Lee Child revealed the origin of Jack Reacher's name in a video clip^[15]: whilst unemployed and midway through writing the first novel with the character as yet unnamed, he visited his local supermarket with his wife. An elderly lady approached him and asked him to reach an item off a high shelf for her. His wife commented: "Hey if this writing thing doesn't work out, you can be a reacher in a supermarket."

The schedule for the Reacher series, previously one-per-year, was stepped up with 61 Hours and Worth Dying For both released in 2010. Lee Child was twice approached by Guildrose/Ian Fleming Publications to continue the James Bond novels but has turned down the offers.

Reacher makes an off-stage cameo in Stephen King's 2010 novel Under the Dome. Chester's Mills police officer Jackie Wettington is revealed to have previously served as a military policewoman in Germany, and she is recommended to Colonel Cox by Jack Reacher, whom Cox describes as "the toughest goddam Army cop that ever served, in my humble opinion."

Katherine Chancellor Murphy (née Shepherd; formerly Reynolds, Thurston, and Sterling) is a fictional character from the American CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless. Since her debut in 1973, she has been portrayed by Jeanne Cooper, who has appeared on the series longer than any other actor. Over the years Cooper has been temporarily replaced, with actresses including Gisele MacKenzie and Michael Learned.

Much of Katherine's history on the series revolves around her long-running conflict with her former paid companion, Jill Abbott (Jess Walton). Their feud is one of the longest rivalries on any American soap opera.^[1] In addition, Katherine has developed a strong friendship with Nikki Newman (Melody Thomas Scott), the late John Abbott (Jerry Douglas), as well as a close business relationship and longtime friendship with Victor Newman (Eric Braeden).

The character of Katherine Chancellor was introduced in November 1973, several months after The Young and the Restless premiered that March. Series co-creator, William J. Bell, was disappointed with the weak ratings, and thus hired veteran actress, Jeanne Cooper, as a quick fix to add some controversy to the program.^[2] Singer Gisele MacKenzie briefly substituted for Cooper for six episodes in 1986.^[3] In October 2011, it was announced that Cooper had taken a medical leave. Starting November 1, 2011, the role was temporarily portrayed by actress Michael Learned.^[4] Cooper then returned on December 23, 2011.

Katherine (Kay to her closest friends, Mrs. C to her long-time maid, Esther Valentine and friend Kevin Fisher) is a wealthy pillar of the Genoa City community and the matriarch of the Chancellor family. Katherine is part owner of Chancellor Industries and Jabot Cosmetics is a subsidiary. Her net worth was estimated to be between $1B and $1.5B as of November 2008. She is widely considered the grande dame and matriarch of Genoa City. Her son Brock affectionally calls her "Duchess."

1973—[link]

In high school, she developed long-lasting friendships with John Abbott and Stuart Brooks. She ended up marrying her high school sweetheart, Gary Reynolds, and they had a son together, Brock Reynolds. Arthur Hendricks was Gary Reynold's best friend, and the man with whom Katherine conducted an affair during her time apart from Brock's father. Arthur, as we would learn in 2004, would connect Katherine and Jill in a way that none other could...and neither woman would even know it for many years.

When the series premiered, she was married to the handsome, wealthy head of Chancellor Industries, Philip Chancellor II, and they lived at the luxurious Chancellor Estate. Her former husband, Gary Reynolds, and Phillip had been college buddies, friends until Gary died, then Kay and Phillip grew close and eventually married.

After many years of a loving marriage with Phillip, Katherine became an alcoholic and heavy smoker, and began having sex with the stable boys. She blamed it on boredom, Phillip's long hours, her fading looks, and her estrangement from her son, Brock Reynolds. Phillip tried to convince her she was destroying herself, as well as their marriage. He suggested she find something to occupy her time or he would leave. Katherine responded with a suicide attempt. Soon after, Katherine took a liking to her poor and innocent young manicurist, Jill Foster, so Kay hired Jill as her paid companion, maid, and hairdresser.

However Jill had an affair with Phillip (Donnelly Rhodes). Katherine, however had other intentions. She arranged for her son, Brock, who was attracted to Jill, to propose. Jill accepted, and Brock married them himself. Before they consummated the marriage, Jill found out she was pregnant and told Phillip. Phillip was overjoyed, and asked Kay for a divorce, which sent her back to the bottle. Katherine signed the papers in a drunken stupor, crossing out the property settlement because without him, she wanted nothing, not even the estate. Phillip flew to the Dominican Republic for a quick divorce, while Jill broke the news to Brock, who agreed to back out of their marriage, which was not legal anyway.

Upon Phillip's return, Katherine met him at the airport and offered to drive him home. Kay made a last-ditch effort to convince Phillip to change his mind about their marriage. But when he turned her down, she hit the accelerator while rounding a curve, and the car sailed off a cliff. Kay sustained serious injuries, and Phillip was in critical condition. Jill hovered at his bedside. Phillip asked the hospital chaplain to marry them, and soon afterward, Phillip died. Thus began the life-long feud between Jill Foster and Kay Chancellor—Jill accusing Kay of murdering her true love, and Kay accusing Jill of stealing hers.

Jill delivered a son, whom she named Philip Chancellor III. Katherine tried to buy him from Jill for a million dollars, but instead, Jill sued for half of Phillip's estate. Kay hired Attorney Mitchell Sherman to have Jill's marriage annulled, thereby stopping any inheritance, due to the fact that the divorce papers had been signed when she was drunk. In retaliation, Jill planted alcohol around the estate so Kay would go off the wagon, and also attempted to drive Kay insane.

By the late 1970s, Katherine fell in love with and tricked hairdresser Derek Thurston into marrying her. But Derek was really in love with Jill. Despite this, Derek took Kay up on her deal. If he lived with her for a year, she would set up a $100,000 trust fund for Jill's son and set Derek up in his own salon. Then Derek's ex-wife Suzanne Lynch arrived in town, bent on getting Derek back. She befriended Kay, and gave her candy laced with drugs, which drove Kay into a sanitarium. Kay's roommate went berserk and set fire to the room. Kay escaped, but the roommate's body was identified as Kay because she was wearing Kay's ring. Derek found himself free of both wives, inheriting the Chancellor wealth and free to marry Jill. But Kay showed up at their wedding - very much alive! Kay reclaimed her fortune and Derek, and named him head of Chancellor Industries. They went on a cruise, had a fight, Kay jumped overboard, and was rescued by Felipe Ramirez who held her captive. They fell in love, and he let her loose to return to her world where she divorced Derek.

In 1984, Katherine received a face lift. Jeanne Cooper, who played Katherine, had an actual one and filmed her real life face lift on TV as if Katherine was getting one as well. After the real life surgery, the bandages were removed while the camera was rolling and it was played out like an episode of the show. Katherine Chancellor's former maid and friend, Liz Foster Brooks, was at her side after the surgery to help her recover, despite Katherine and Liz's daughter's feud.

Soon after, Katherine attempted to destroy Jill's marriage to Katherine's old friend John Abbott by trying to exploit Jill's affair with John's son, Jack Abbott. Eventually, Katherine got pictures of the two of them and showed the pictures to John, who ended up suffering a stroke. Soon after, John and Jill divorced, and then Jill was shot. Katherine, John and Jack Abbott were all suspected of murder, but as it turned out, the murderer was a masseur, Sven.

By the late 1980s, Jill and Katherine fought over Jill's son, Philip Chancellor III, who was then a teenager. Philip had a troubled past. A few years earlier, Jill had been forced to send him to boarding school. Now, Philip turned to drinking. He fought his alcoholism with help from both Katherine and Jill, along with Christine Blair (Lauralee Bell). His drinking led him to engage in a one night stand with Nina Webster (Tricia Cast). Nina became pregnant with Phillip's child. Phillip later died in a car crash while he was driving under the influence.

Shortly after, Jill hired a con man named Brian Romalotti (the father of Danny Romalotti and Gina Roma), whom she dressed up as a wealthy man and rechristened "Rex Sterling" to romance Katherine. Jill's plan backfired, though, and Katherine and Rex eventually fell in love for real.

A year later, Rex's former cellmate, Clint Radison, found a woman named Marge Catrooke working at a diner; Marge was a dead ringer for Kay. He and his cohorts, Morey and Lil, who went to work for Katherine as houseman Robert and maid Shirley, trained Marge to pass for Kay, then held Kay and her "ditsy" maid Esther Valentine captive. Meanwhile, Rex found himself increasingly baffled by his wife's unusual behavior. No longer able to tolerate her new eccentricities and boorish behavior, Rex moved out and took up residence with Jill. Jill persuaded him to file for divorce from Katherine and marry her.

Marge sold Chancellor Industries, and since Rex was gone, Clint was free to liquidate the rest of Katherine's assets. But her son, Brock, made a surprise return from his missions in India. Brock, with the help of Mitchell Sherman, discovered the ruse, and rescued Kay and Esther. Marge got to know Kay, and Kay also tried to help Marge to get away. Clint and his cohorts went to prison, but Marge was released as an innocent dupe, thanks to Katherine's intervention.

Katherine was devastated to learn that during her absence, Rex had married Jill. With her lawyer Mitchell's help, Katherine pointed out that the marriage wasn't legal because the divorce papers were signed by Marge, not Katherine. Katherine agreed to accept Rex's marriage to Jill, provided they wait six months before legally remarrying. Rex and Kay remarried after Rex pretended that he was dying from a heart attack.

Later, Esther answered a personal ad in the paper and met con man Norman Peterson. In an effort to impress him, she posed as lady of the manor, and Katherine and Rex went along with it and dressed up as her servants. Norman coerced Esther into convincing Katherine to include Esther in her will and marry him. Katherine and Rex were suspicious, so they arranged a fake wedding. Then, unwilling to wait for Katherine to die to be rich, Norman broke into the estate safe, and Rex caught him. Startled, Norman shot and killed Rex, leaving Kay devastated. Norman was arrested for murder, and Esther was forgiven and again named in Katherine's will.

After years of torment from Katherine, Jill turned the tables on her in July 1998 when she discovered a letter penned by the now-deceased Phillip, naming Jill as the sole owner of the Chancellor Estate. Jill evicted Katherine, who then found a legal loophole which resulted in Katherine and Jill being forced to live at the Estate together. The constant battle of living with Jill drove Katherine close to the bottle again. Rather than succumb, she ran off into the night, contemplated suicide on a bridge, and ended up lost in the streets, her purse stolen, cold, and alone. A homeless girl, known only as Mac, rescued Kay and took her to the Genoa City Shelter. Katherine befriended Mac. Mac finally trusted Kay enough to confide in her the letter she carried next to her heart—a letter from the father she had never met, written to her mother. Amazingly, the father turned out to be Kay's son, Brock, and Kay realized that Mac was her granddaughter. Mac's mother, Amanda, and Brock had been in love and working together in India.

Kay decided to track down her son in India so he could meet the daughter he never knew he had, but returned from her search without him. Shortly afterward, Kay received a call that Brock was presumed dead. Then Brock showed up, and they were reunited after many years. Mackenzie returned to the estate to get her things, intending to leave town, just as her father walked in and he and his mother were finally united. Jill took an instant dislike to Mac. Mac and Brock lived at the Chancellor Estate, slowly learning to trust and love each other. Though he wanted to be a father to Mac, Brock's need to help people sent him to volunteer in Louisiana, building houses for the poor.

Afraid that Mac's mother, Amanda Browning, would show up in Genoa City and take her back, Katherine petitioned and was awarded legal custody of Mac. When Amanda did show up, Mac rebuffed her and sent her away. But Amanda had run away from Mac's stepfather, Ralph, too, and was living at the same homeless shelter where Mac and her father, Brock, were volunteers. With her boyfriend Billy Abbott's help, Mac and her mother accepted each other in their lives again. Kay asked Amanda to move to the estate, and Amanda agreed. Then Mac's stepfather, Ralph Hunnicutt, showed up in Genoa City and began stalking her, and he coerced Amanda into helping him steal from the Chancellor Estate. After a series of frightening events, Ralph and Amanda left town and Billy Abbott and Mac grow closer together.

Katherine and Jill were mortified when, in 2003, they are mistakenly led to believe that they are mother and daughter. While her then-husband, Gary Reynolds, was spending time overseas with their son Brock, Katherine had an affair with Gary's best friend, a local judge named Arthur Hendricks. Shortly before Gary returned, Katherine gave birth to a baby and handed it over to a school friend named Charlotte Ramsey, with instructions to give the baby up for adoption. Unfortunately, Charlotte was unable to drop the baby off as planned, and was forced to give her own name as the child's birth mother. Many years later, the woman Jill had always thought of as her mother, Liz Foster, discovered she had a brain tumor. Fearing that her time on Earth was limited, Liz decided to tell Jill that she was adopted. Liz survived, but the secret left Jill reeling. After a long search, she discovered Charlotte Ramsey's name on her birth certificate. Katherine was shocked when she saw Charlotte back in Genoa City a short time later, but still didn't piece together her connection with Jill. John Abbott, also a former schoolmate, recognized Charlotte. He eventually tricked Katherine into revealing that Charlotte had an abortion, which left her unable to carry children, when she was younger. With the truth about her barrenness about to surface, Charlotte went to the Chancellor Estate and confronted Katherine on May 20, 2003. Charlotte then told Kay that Jill was her biological daughter.^[5]

The revelation about Jill caused Katherine to have a massive stroke, which left her nearly catatonic for quite a while. Still, there was an even greater sadness attached to this newly-revealed family connection. Interestingly, Jill's son Billy Abbott and Katherine's granddaughter Mackenzie Browning had been dating, but the supposed mother-daughter connection between Katherine and Jill would mean that Mackenzie and Billy were first cousins. Unbeknownst to them, the young couple was married, while a paralyzed Katherine could do nothing but watch. A horrified Jill and John tried to stop the wedding, but they were too late. Eventually, Jill managed to inform the newlyweds of the shocking news before the marriage was consummated. Heartbroken, Billy and Mackenzie had their union annulled, and the two separately left town. Jill helped her mother to recover and the two eventually resolved their differences.

Despite several obstacles along the way, the two former enemies began to form a true mother-daughter bond. Nevertheless, their feud was decades old, and it remains to be seen if Katherine and Jill can continue to be cordial—recent events have caused their deeply-rooted enmity for one another to resurface. Katherine began to have disturbing nightmares involving a baby. She soon determined that they were actually fragments of a repressed memory. Eventually Katherine recalled that years ago—unable to accept the fact that Jill had given birth to a child with her deceased husband Phillip—she kidnapped the baby, and gave him to a woman named Violet Montgomery, whom she met in a bar.n Violet was to place the child with a different family. The woman then gave Katherine a different baby that Jill raised as her son, Phillip Chancellor III.

While Jill adamantly refused to believe this at first, DNA testing of Phillip's remains confirmed that he was not Jill's biological son. It was then revealed that Jill's real son was, in fact, new-in-town Cane Ashby, who had recently married Amber Moore. Cane eventually ended his relationship with Amber, after he discovered that she had faked their wedding (with help from her friend Alison Stewart of Oakdale, Illinois).

Katherine, however, formed a bond with Amber after being trapped with her under the Clear Springs wreckage in October 2007. She sees a lot of herself in the young woman, and often offers her advice and a shoulder to lean on when others turn against her. Katherine was again furious with Jill upon learning that her daughter was planning on eloping with Ji Min Kim. She offered Ji Min a bribe not to marry her daughter, but Ji Min declined. He was murdered before he could marry Jill and the investigation proved that David Chow murdered him to pay off some of his gambling debts (associated with the mob).

On January 25, 2008, Katherine collapsed while talking to Amber. She was then examined at her home by a physician and informed on January 30, 2008 that she had a mini-stroke. Following this terrifying experience, Katherine enlisted Amber's help in writing her memoirs—the prospect of which could be frightening to many Genoa City residents. A year later, on January 22, 2009 while still trying to reclaim her true identity as Katherine, Amber accompanied Katherine to the doctor's office for an evaluation including being tested for Alzheimer's disease.

Back in 2005, while eating lunch at the Café Russe in Los Angeles, Katherine was approached by Massimo Marone. Massimo introduced her to friend Stephanie Douglas Forrester, the daughter of an old business acquaintance (John Douglas) belonging to Katherine. It was discovered that Katherine was the actual owner of Forrester Creations, via the Stephanie Douglas Trust, which her associate’s daughter sought to reclaim from her estranged husband (Eric Forrester). With Katherine's blessing, Stephanie achieved her goal, leaving the grand dame of Genoa City free to focus on her numerous other assets. (October 31 – November 1, 2005)

Katherine had been having a series of memory lapses that had gotten progressively worse over the weeks. She resisted attempts to get a medical diagnosis on what exactly was happening to her. She has also been trying to help her look-alike friend, Marge Cotrooke, stop drinking and enter rehab. The November 7th episode went off the air with Katherine driving Marge to the rehab center and then getting into a serious car accident during a heavy rainstorm. On the November 11th episode, she was pronounced dead, but her family and friends don't know that it was Marge who died, and that Kay was still alive, lying near the river. Kay was rescued by Marge's friend Patrick Murphy, who thought Kay was Marge, and taken back to his mobile home. In late December 2008, Katherine finally regained enough memories to realize she was Katherine Chancellor, not Marge Cotrooke. She convinced Murphy to take her to the Chancellor Mansion. He did, and minutes after she arrived, Jill also arrived and was obviously shocked to see her. After the shock wore off, however, Jill was convinced that Katherine was Marge, seeing as Jill remembered Marge from years ago. Katherine, having little memory still, couldn't disprove Jill's theory, and was arrested for trespassing and fraud. She has already remembered an incident with Gloria Abbott Bardwell upon encountering her at the jail. Katherine subsequently failed a DNA test which would have proven her identity (which calls into question whether she is actually Jill's biological mother).

Eventually, she has more than just Amber and Murphy believing in her true identity; she also has Nikki Newman who finally believes her. Katherine left Genoa City once again when the second DNA tests came in again saying she and Jill are not mother and daughter. Katherine returned to Murphy's where they reconciled; only later to be visited by Nikki and Paul Williams believing she is Katherine no matter what DNA testing results state. With the help of Nikki she proved to Victor Newman that she is Katherine as well. Soon after, Murphy presented Katherine with an engagement ring and proposed to Katherine back at the diner where Katherine accepted.

In return for the Jabot shares which Victor purchased from Gloria, Jill allows the corpse buried in Katherine's grave to be exhumed, and it is subjected to a third DNA test. Ultimately, Jill's DNA matches neither the corpse nor Katherine (whom Jill believes to be Marge). Thus, Katherine's claim about her true identity is bolstered, and it is proven conclusively that Katherine and Jill are not biological mother and daughter after all. After a final pair of DNA tests between Katherine and her son Brock are a match, not even Jill can deny the truth any longer. She bitterly rejects Katherine's overtures of affection, and the ensuing argument reignites the feud between the women in full force. Weeks later on May 1, 2009, Katherine and Murphy are married, with Brock officiating the ceremony.

Shortly thereafter (following his wedding to Lily Winters), Cane recalls his telephone conversation years earlier with a man regarding their joint plan to con Jill and Katherine. The man bears a startling resemblance to the supposedly deceased Phillip Chancellor III. On June 10, 2009, it is revealed that Phillip is indeed the other gentleman, and that he is still very much alive (unknown to everyone except Cane). Upon learning that Cane is not Jill's son, and that Phillip Chancellor III is alive and has returned to Genoa City, she suffers another mild stroke. However, Jill and Katherine continued to argue, but were later able to make some peace with each other.

On November 13, 2009, Katherine Chancellor became Reverend Katherine Chancellor. She became an ordained minister online so that she would be able to officiate the wedding between her dear friend Amber Moore and Amber's longtime boyfriend Daniel Romalotti.

Katherine decided to make Chancellor Industries public and to get others to own the company, but not majority because she still wanted to be the CEO and majority owner of course. The first one to become stockholder was Tucker McCall. He wooed Katherine into letting him into become a stockholder in the company.

For Christmas, Jill gave Katherine a gift, which had the name of her real child. Katherine didn't want to open the box because she thought as Jill as being her real daughter. After Jill begged her, she finally opened the box to find the name JoJo and flew to where her daughter was living, Oklahoma. When they found her she was a drunk and a bounty hunter. Katherine and Jill flew back with JoJo and she caused trouble from the time she arrived. In January 2010, it was revealed that JoJo was sent by Tucker McCall to scam Katherine. On January 15, 2010, Katherine held a stockholders' meeting. Tucker was the only one to show up and it baffled Neil, and J.T. He revealed to Katherine that he bought all the shares from the other stockholders, which meant that he was the owner of Chancellor Industries. She thought he was her friend and ally, but now he was neither, until he revealed that of course he was neither, but he was her son, which shocks and stuns her as well as everyone else. Later in the year, Katherine watched with much sadness, as Jill tried to bond with her newly discovered sister Lauren Fenmore Baldwin after discovering that her birth father was Neil Fenmore. After the Harvest Festival, Murphy was attacked by Meggie McClaine, a woman plotting against lovebirds Victor and Nikki Newman, and goes into a bad medical condition where he can only move his eyes. Meggie knows Murphy, as she was married to Murphy's son years ago. Eventually, Meggie schemes her to marry Victor and then kill just like what she did with Murphy's son. However, using Morse Code, Murphy is able to tell Ronan Molloy all about Meggie despite Meggie's threats against Katherine. Ronan and Murphy inform Victor about Meggie who is able to set Meggie up. Just as Meggie thinks that Victor is dying, he snaps out of it and Murphy and Ronan come in to arrest Meggie.

By February, Kay discovered that Jill was going to marry Australian businessman Colin Atkinson. However, Colin is hiding the fact that he is actually Cane Ashby's biological father, and that he is the head of a mafia family in Australia, who came back to bring Cane back into the fold. Kay, fearing that something was off about Colin, made clear to Jill that she was against the marriage. The night of the marriage, Cane was shot down by one of Colin's henchmen. Cane had apparently tried to stop the wedding, but it proved too late. Katherine was devastated with Cane's loss, and loved Cane regardless of his flaws and sketchy past. After the death, Colin comforted Jill, and also moved into the Chancellor Estate with her.

Around the same time, Victoria Abbott, Abby Newman, and Nick Newman's were wrapping up their lawsuit against their father Victor. Katherine, who mostly stood on the sidelines, was shocked to learn that her son Tucker McCall planned on profiting from the case. She immediately made clear that she was against the case and Tucker's business intentions. In fact, she vowed to destroy Tucker's business, and even sent back her offer to have Tucker and Ashley Abbott's wedding at her house. Following the lawsuit and Victor's announcement of taking Newman Enterprises public, she blasted Victoria, Nick, and Abby, and also vowed to help Victor in any way possible.

With Tucker and Katherine's relationship in turmoil, he prepared to marry Ashley Abbott in May 2011. However, as a result of a dirty scheme by Abby Newman to implicate Tucker and Diane Newman having an affair, Tucker is ran over by a drunk Abby. However, to protect Abby, Ashley takes the blame and switches places with Abby before the police came. Ashley is fine, and Abby recovers quickly. However, Tucker is seriously injured and is in a coma. When Jack calls Katherine with the news, she and Murphy rush to the hospital. She stayed with Tucker and later learns that Tucker had a DNR. Against Katherine and Ashley's wishes, his breathing tube is removed, but amazingly he took a breath by himself. As lawyers begin getting involved regarding business issues, Katherine came at odds with Tucker's right hand woman, Sofia Winters, as well as Jack, who fears that Jabot may be at risk now. However, a lawyer informs Katherine in front of Sofia and Victor that she is now in charge of McCall Unlimited given the present circumstances. In addition, she learns of $20 million set aside for a son that he had previously looked for, but failed. Katherine was amazed to learn of this new grandchild, and this coincided with the loss of Chance Chancellor's redeployment to the army. At a party of Chance, Kay hired Paul Williams to look into Tucker's son. On June 21, 2011, Katherine became a great-grandmother with the birth of her granddaughter Mackenzie's new child, Dylan Hellstrom.

As acting CEO of McCall Unlimited, Katherine immediately puts an end to buying Newman Enterprise stock, which was a key plan under Tucker. Sofia Winters feels that Katherine is dismantling all of Tucker's plans, but Katherine claimed that Tucker knew what her ideas where and that he put her in charge, thus she should respect her plans. Katherine later suggested that Sofia take a leave of absence after she had insulted her. Also, as Ashley Abbott is arrested for attempted murder for Tucker, Katherine now feels uncertain about Ashley's innocence and put a protective order for Tucker, which keeps Ashley away. Once, Ashley sneaks in to see him, Katherine fires her as CEO of Jabot. Soon, Jack Abbott and Victor Newman both begin gearing up for a fight for the CEO position at Jabot. They both confront Katherine about it, with Jack wanting to protect his father's legacy, while Victor suggested that Victoria become CEO. However, Victoria declined and Victor put together an offer to buy Jabot from Katherine, which she began to seriously consider. However, the ghost of John Abbott ended up suggested Jack for Jabot, and after a heartfelt moment Jack had with Katherine, she made him CEO.

Eventually Tucker woke up and asked why Abby tried to kill him. Ashley ended up explaining that she accidentally ran him over, and when the DA came in to question Tucker, he explained that he didn't remember much, included who was driving. Soon after, Tucker asked Ashley to marry him immediately. Katherine walked in just as they were wed. She thought the marriage was ill-advised, and he and Katherine quickly began to fight when he went over some of the changes she made while he was in coma. Tucker ended up asking Ashley to take over since he felt that he wasn't fit yet to take over. Katherine ended up visiting Victor about Tucker's theory about Abby, but Victor never came clean regarding the truth leaving Katherine annoyed. Katherine also visiting Jack, and he announced that he would support her in her new battle against Tucker.

Katherine ended up challenging Tucker's ability to run McCall Unlimited, and after her evidence of Tucker's incompetence, Katherine was allowed to continue to run the company until he can prove his competence. Afterwards, Katherine announced that she would challenge the validity of Tucker's marriage to Ashley Abbott. They both are opposed to it, but Ashley and Tucker ended up separating because of the truth regarding Tucker's affair with Diane Jenkins.

In August 2011, Kay continues searching for Tucker's long lost son and with the help of Paul Williams, she learns that it is Devon Hamilton, Neil's adopted son. When Tucker rejects her again and fires Devon from his record label, she hires her grandson as the head of her new record label, but decides to keep the secret anyway. On September 8, Kay decides to add Devon to her will and Jill questions why. Jill eventually figures out Devon is Tucker's son. Later Paul confronts Kay and promises that he will tell Devon the truth if she doesn't do it herself. Kay explains that she doesn't want Tucker to corrupt Devon. On October 3, 2011 Tucker wins back Jabot and Katherine has a stroke and is taken to the hospital. Tucker goes to the Genoa City Police station where Abby has been arrested for being the driver in the accident in which Tucker was hit. After some promises by Tucker to make the DA the cover of the magazine "Restless Style" because of his constant harassment of Tucker and his family, charges against Abby are dropped. Tucker leaves and goes to Jabot, he is sitting at Jack's desk when Jack comes in and they discuss each other's guilty consciences. News of Kay's stroke gets out quickly and all her friends come to visit her, while waiting for the doctors to give them more information about her condition. On October 5, 2011, Katherine wakes up after suffering from a stroke and Jill was there by her side. Tucker finds out about Devon and tells him now Devon refuses to communicate with Katherine. She still tries to reconnect with him, and also invites Harmony to come stay at the Chancellor estate. Katherine later attends Kevin & Chloe's wedding, but when Kevin calls it off, she leaves because of a chill. And Billy & Victoria get married, but she is unable to attend.
