IMAGO Meret Oppenheim by Pamela Robertson-Pearce & Anselm Spoerri (extract)
Film by Pamela Robertson-Pearce & Anselm Spoerri.
Narrated by Glenda Jackson
"Nobody gives you freedom, you have to take it."
IMAGO Meret Oppenheim is an award-winning film about the major Swiss artist Meret Oppenheim, whose fame rests on the surrealist masterpiece, the Furlined Teacup. This feature-length documentary creates a moving portrait of this inspiring woman through a poetic presentation of the themes that dominated her life and art.
Beautifully narrated by Glenda Jackson, a two-time Academy Award-winner, the film explores her creative crisis & transformation, Paris of the Surrealists, Jungian psychology, Nature, feminism, the playful and the androgyne.
A film about a woman, who was able to transform herself after a long crisis. A meditative film about her, without her, that tells the story of her life and art, based on her words, letters, poems and dreams. An intimate film about Meret Oppenheim, who for many in Europe has become a role-model.
IMAGO Meret Oppenheim had a successful theatrical release in Switzerland, becoming the best attended documentary of the year, and it had a cinema release in Germany. The film has been invited to several important film festivals in Europe and America. IMAGO has been awarded the prestigious Prize for Outstanding Quality by the Swiss Film Board and has received the Gold Apple Award at the National Educational Film and Video Festival in America, one of the key festivals for special-interest media. IMAGO Meret Oppenheim had its North American theatrical premiere in Boston in October 1990 and was reviewed by Jay Carr of the Boston Globe.

[ATV Today. 18.11.1968. Women in Love
In this month’s look at the collections at the Media Archive for Central England (MACE), Development Manager Emma Morley looks at a behind the scenes film made by ATV of the 1969 movie Women in Love, directed by Ken Russell and starring Alan Bates, Oliver Reed, Glenda Jackson and Jennie Linden.
Women In Love, produced and adapted by Larry Kramer from D.H Lawrence’s classic novel of the same name was nominated for four Oscars for Kramer’s screenplay adaptation, Ken Russell’s direction and Billy Williams’ cinematography with Glenda Jackson winning Best Actress in a Leading Role for her portrayal of Gudron.
This black and white ATV report of the film on location in Derby, which was broadcast on 18th November 1968, begins with a high angle shot of the cast and crew at Derby Arboretum where around 100 background artists are gathered to film a war memorial scene. This scene appears approximately 25 minutes into the movie, where the crowd sing Jerusalem and Alan Bates’ character Rupert Berkin rants to lover Ursula Brangwen (Jennie Linden) about war, love, hate and humanity as he carries her shopping parcels through the singing crowds.
We see Director Ken Russell behind the camera and various shots of background artists dressed in 1920s period costume including two policemen, men in army uniform and a group of schoolchildren. Between these shots is a brief shot of stars Jennie Linden and Alan Bates. There are also shots of Cinematographer Billy Williams working with Ken Russell on setting up the shots. Williams went onto win an Oscar for Best Cinematography for Ghandi in 1982.
The film features interviews with Larry Kramer who talks about his work as producer and screenplay adapter on the film, Sir Alan Bates, who talks of how he was born in Allestree and went to school in Belper and Jennie Linden who talks of coming to work on the film after recently becoming a mother of her 4 month old son, Rupert.
If you would like to obtain this film as an MPEG4 to keep (for personal use only) you can order from MACE for £10 (inc VAT). Please email Emma Morley on sales@macearchive.org.
This footage is licensed commercially through ITN Source but enquiries should initially made through Emma Morley at sales@macearchive.org or calling 01522 837750.
The footage is (c) ITV Studios Global Entertainment and was filmed for Associated Television in 1968.

WHOLLY COMMUNION
Dir. by Peter Whitehead, 1965
33 min., UK
This is the only footage of the 1965 Poetry Olympics held at the Albert Hall which turned out to be the catalyst for bringing the hippie counter-culture into being in the UK. Some 5,000 or so freaks, beatniks, hippies and social outcasts of all persuasions turned up en masse, looked at each other, and realized that they were not alone. From this grew the International Times and the whole notion of an underground press, the squatting movement, the re-birth of English Anarchism (as opposed to anarchy) and all sorts of weird and wonderful (or not so wonderful) "happenings" that are nowadays usually lumped under the umbrella of Swinging 60s.
BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT
Dir. by Peter Whitehead, 1967
65 min., UK
Peter Brook directs the Royal Shakespeare Company in US, a semi-improvised work protesting England’s unseen and unacknowledged role in the Vietnam War. Containing sequences at public meetings and interviews with the actors (including Glenda Jackson) and Brook himself, the film is an agit-prop time capsule that has gone virtually unseen in this country since its premiere at the New York Film Festival in 1967. Wrote Variety of the film, “…for Americans interested in current theatrical trends it could be a must, since it’s their only current opportunity to see one of the most adventuresome and controversial stage productions of the last few years.”
