The Security Council of the UN adopted on Friday a resolution that calls for the elimination of chemical weapons in Syria, but no punitive action automatic threat against the government of Syrian President Assad does not meet.

The unanimous vote of the Security Council of 15 members crowning weeks of intense diplomacy between Russia and the United States. It is based on an agreement between the two countries reached in Geneva earlier this month after a sarin gas attack nerve August 21 in a suburb of Damascus that killed hundreds of people.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said after the vote that the great powers hoped to hold a peace conference in Syria in mid-November in Geneva.

He told the council the plan to eradicate chemical weapons in Syria was \

Iran's president is targeted with eggs as hardliners wave anti-America posters, but hundreds of supporters cheer him on. Iran's President Hassan Rouhani has been met with protesters chanting "Death to America" as he arrived from New York after a historic phone call with Barack Obama. Shoes and eggs were thrown towards his motorcade as it left Tehran's Mehrabad Airport, as some 60 hardline Islamists also chanted "Death to Israel". They were outnumbered by 200 to 300 supporters of the president who shouted: "Thank you Rouhani." Mr Rouhani, who was returning from a UN General Assembly meeting in New York, stood up through his car's sunroof to acknowledge the crow He did not appear to have been hit by any of the projectiles. Throwing shoes is considered deeply offensive in the Middle East. Mr Rouhani's 15-minute telephone conversation with Mr Obama on Friday was the first contact between leaders of the two countries in more than three decades. The exchange could reflect a major step in resolving global concerns over Tehran's disputed nuclear programme. Mr Obama said he had a constructive conversation, adding: "While there will surely be important obstacles to moving forward and success is by no means guaranteed, I believe we can reach a comprehensive solution." Both leaders will now direct their teams to work quickly to find an agreement after the first direct verbal communication between the nations' presidents since the 1979 Islamic revolution. Earlier, Mr Rouhani said he hoped talks with the US and other world powers over its nuclear programme will lead to results in "a short period of time He said Iran would present its plan for a resolution to the nuclear issue at discussions with the six countries scheduled for Geneva on October 15 and 16. The six are the five permanent UN Security Council members - Britain, China, France, the United States and Russia - and Germany, known as P5+1. Iran has insisted its nuclear programme is a peaceful attempt to generate electricity but America and its allies including Israel have long demanded a halt to Tehran's uranium enrichment, fearing it could secretly build nuclear warheads. Mr Rouhani vowed his country would not build a nuclear bomb, adding his government would be transparent and had the backing of authorities at home to handle the nuclear issue. In his latest comments, he said: "We say explicitly that we will be transparent; we say explicitly that we will not build a bomb. Through the P5+1 we want to provide even more assurances." Earlier Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif met US Secretary of State John Kerry along with representatives from the other P5+1 powers. That was followed by a brief bilateral meeting between Mr Zarif and Mr Kerry. The two sides said the tone was positive but they remained cautious about resolving the long-running stand-off over Tehran's nuclear programme. Mr Rouhani and Mr Zarif, both in New York to attend the UN General Assembly, have said they are eager to clinch an agreement quickly that could bring relief from what the president called "illegal" sanctions. The sanctions have slashed Iran's vital oil exports by more than half, restricted its international bank transfers, devalued its currency and sent inflation surging.

UN inspectors are back in Syria, to investigate more cases of alleged chemical weapons use. The team earlier concluded that nerve gas had been used, on a large scale, last month. That report did not assign blame, but was still used by Western powers build up a case against the Syrian government. Russia called the UN findings inconclusive and one-sided.

The agreement between the U.S. and Russia avoided punitive U.S. military action against the government of President Assad, which Washington blames for the attack in August. The government of Syria and its ally, Russia, rebels blamed the government for the attack. One of the provisions of the resolution, council diplomats described as significant, formally supports a plan for a political transition in Syria agreed at an international conference in Geneva in June 2012. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said after the vote that the great powers hoped to hold a peace conference in Syria in mid-November in Geneva. He told the council the plan to eradicate chemical weapons in Syria was "a license to kill with conventional weapons."

Press TV - September 28, 2013 A political analyst has warned of efforts by anti-Iran political figures and the Israeli lobby in the US to impede the positive process which has begun on the standoff over Tehran's nuclear energy program. In a Friday interview with Press TV, Danny Schechter pointed to Iran's successful Thursday talks with the six world powers over the issues surrounding Tehran's nuclear energy program and the positive change in Washington's tone about the Islamic Republic, saying extremist groups in the US, including "the Tea Party people" as well as the Israeli lobby will launch a campaign to obstruct the new positive process regarding Tehran's peaceful nuclear work. "Iran has surprised and put the rest of the world off guard, so to speak ... Iran was not only very sophisticated but it was also very, as they say, constructive in establishing some parameters to continued discussion," he said. "I think there is a desire on the part of a lot of the parties and the people of the world to see this conflict if not ended certainly adjudicated in some sort of fair way and the fact that that the process has begun is quite amazing. I do not think anybody a week ago whether believes that it was even possible," Schechter pointed out. On Friday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his American counterpart Barack Obama held a telephone conversation as the Iranian president was wrapping up his visit to New York. The phone conversation is the first direct communication between Iranian and US presidents since Iran's Islamic Revolution of 1979. The two heads of states stressed Tehran and Washington's political will to swiftly resolve the West's dispute over Iran's nuclear energy program, and exchanged viewpoints on various topics, including cooperation on different regional issues. During the telephone conversation, Rouhani and Obama also assigned Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and US Secretary of State John Kerry to quickly set the stage for cooperation between the two counties. The United States, Israel and some of their allies have repeatedly accused Iran of pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program. Iran has categorically rejected the allegation, stressing that as a committed member of the International Atomic Energy Agency and a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty, it is entitled to develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
