New York, New York - The Dakota
The Dakota, constructed from October 25, 1880 to October 27, 1884, is a co-op apartment building located on the northwest corner of 72nd Street and Central Park West in the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City, at 1 West 72nd Street, New York, NY 10023. The building is widely known as the location of the murder of musician John Lennon.
The architectural firm of Henry Janeway Hardenbergh was commissioned to create the design for Edward Clark, head of the Singer Sewing Machine Company. The firm also designed the Plaza Hotel.
The building's high gables and deep roofs with a profusion of dormers, terracotta spandrels and panels, niches, balconies, and balustrades give it a North German Renaissance character, an echo of a Hanseatic townhall. Nevertheless, its layout and floor plan betray a strong influence of French architectural trends in housing design that had become known in New York in the 1870s.
According to often repeated stories, the Dakota was so named because at the time it was built, the Upper West Side of Manhattan was sparsely inhabited and considered as remote as the Dakota Territory. However, the earliest recorded appearance of this account is in a 1933 newspaper story. It is more likely that the building was named "The Dakota" because of Clark's fondness for the names of the new western states and territories. High above the 72nd Street entrance, the figure of a Dakota Indian keeps watch. The Dakota was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, and was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976.

In this video, I go through the process of making a Dakota Fire Hole. A couple of weeks ago I was in a situation where I was reminded just how awesome this fire skill is in the woods.
DISCLAIMER!!! Dakota Fire Holes can be dangerous! Make sure you do everything you can to put out the fire! What you won't see on this video was me pouring water on the fire to put it out before I buried it. Before leaving any fire, make sure you douse it thoroughly with water and bury it. Dakota Fire Holes can cause root fires and can smolder well beyond the time you bury it.

Towards the beginning of August I was leading a group of boys on a backpacking trip through the Allegheny National Forest. On day one, we came upon a lean-to shelter that we were planning to utilize as a base camp for the night. The only problem was that we didn't want to cook near our campsite because I knew the location was prone to black bear activity due to previous experience in the area.
I also didn't want to create a new fire pit/ring in the woods as they quickly accumulate as groups go through and in turn, quickly degrade the natural scenery of the forest. In comes the Dakota fire hole.
In this video I demonstrate how to make one of these as well as go through and talk about the pros and cons of this technique. I also talk about when this technique is handy and when it is not so handy. Finally, I show you just how effective this technique is by boiling 2 cups of water in just over 5 minutes. The Dakota Indians were genius in inventing this technique.
In terms of cooking, this is my "go-to" fire technique as these fires burn hotter, require less wood for sufficient cooking, are quasi-stealthy, and are quick to extinguish among other things.

How to make a Dakota fire hole?

I finally test the Dakota pit tent. It worked out pretty good for a first time but, I can say that the actual Dakota pit is not needed unless its under 20 degrees. With the double wall reflective cover, any amount of heat is trapped creating an actual oven effect. Living in the south where it never gets extremely cold I honestly believe a hobo stove placed under the Carbon fiber chimney would be plenty enough heat. I am planning now on a 100% smoke free oven to hang from the chimney to hold a small fire. I will only use the Dakota pit for temps under 20 degrees. The total weight of the shelter is 14 pounds. Thats the frame, both covers, ALL the chimney components, the storage pouches and even the grill to cover the Dakota hole.

John Winston Ono Lennon, MBE (born John Winston Lennon; 9 October 1940 – 8 December 1980) was an English singer and songwriter who rose to worldwide fame as a co-founder of the band the Beatles, the most commercially successful band in the history of popular music. With fellow member Paul McCartney, he formed a celebrated songwriting partnership.

Yoko Ono
Yoko Ono (小野 洋子, Ono Yōko, born 18 February 1933) is a Japanese multimedia artist, singer and peace activist who is also known for her work in performance art, music and filmmaking. She is the widow and second wife of singer-songwriter John Lennon.
Ono grew up in Tokyo, and studied at Gakushuin. She withdrew from her course after two years and rejoined her family in New York in 1953. She spent some time at Sarah Lawrence College, and then became involved in New York City's downtown artists scene, including the Fluxus group. She first met Lennon in 1966 at her own art exhibition in London, and they became a couple in 1968. Ono and Lennon famously used their honeymoon at the Hilton Amsterdam as a stage for public protests against the Vietnam War with their performance, Bed-Ins for Peace, in Amsterdam and Montreal in 1969. She brought feminism to the forefront in her music, influencing artists as diverse as the B-52s and Meredith Monk. Ono achieved commercial and critical acclaim in 1980 with the chart-topping album Double Fantasy, released with Lennon three weeks before his death.

In this video, I go through the process of making a Dakota Fire Hole. A couple of weeks ago I was in a situation where I was reminded just how awesome this fire skill is in the woods. DISCLAIMER!!! Dakota Fire Holes can be dangerous! Make sure you do everything you can to put out the fire! What you won't see on this video was me pouring water on the fire to put it out before I buried it. The Testing of The Dakota Pit Tent.
I finally test the Dakota pit tent. It worked out pretty good for a first time but, I can say that the actual Dakota pit is not needed unless its under 20 degrees. With the double wall reflective cover, any amount of heat is trapped creating an actual oven effect. Living in the south where it never gets extremely cold I honestly believe a hobo stove placed under the Carbon fiber chimney would be plenty enough heat. I am planning now on a 100% smoke free oven to hang from the chimney to hold a small fire. I will only use the Dakota pit for temps under 20 degrees. The total weight of the shelter is 14 pounds. Thats the frame, both covers, ALL the chimney components, the storage pouches and even the grill to cover the Dakota hole. -

Towards the beginning of August I was leading a group of boys on a backpacking trip through the Allegheny National Forest. On day one, we came upon a lean-to shelter that we were planning to utilize as a base camp for the night. The only problem was that we didn't want to cook near our campsite because I knew the location was prone to black bear activity due to previous experience in the area.
I also didn't want to create a new fire pit/ring in the woods as they quickly accumulate as groups go through and in turn, quickly degrade the natural scenery of the forest. In comes the Dakota fire hole.
In this video I demonstrate how to make one of these as well as go through and talk about the pros and cons of this technique. I also talk about when this technique is handy and when it is not so handy. Finally, I show you just how effective this technique is by boiling 2 cups of water in just over 5 minutes. The Dakota Indians were genius in inventing this technique.
In terms of cooking, this is my "go-to" fire technique as these fires burn hotter, require less wood for sufficient cooking, are quasi-stealthy, and are quick to extinguish among other things.

I finally test the Dakota pit tent. It worked out pretty good for a first time but, I can say that the actual Dakota pit is not needed unless its under 20 degrees. With the double wall reflective cover, any amount of heat is trapped creating an actual oven effect. Living in the south where it never gets extremely cold I honestly believe a hobo stove placed under the Carbon fiber chimney would be plenty enough heat. I am planning now on a 100% smoke free oven to hang from the chimney to hold a small fire. I will only use the Dakota pit for temps under 20 degrees. The total weight of the shelter is 14 pounds. Thats the frame, both covers, ALL the chimney components, the storage pouches and even the grill to cover the Dakota hole.

In the spring of 2005, Jim Miller, a Native spiritual leader and Vietnam veteran, found himself in a dream riding on horseback across the great plains of South Dakota. Just before he awoke, he arrived at a riverbank in Minnesota and saw 38 of his Dakota ancestors hanged. At the time, Jim knew nothing of the largest mass execution in United States history, ordered by Abraham Lincoln on December 26, 1862. "When you have dreams, you know when they come from the creator... As any recovered alcoholic, I made believe that I didn't get it. I tried to put it out of my mind, yet it's one of those dreams that bothers you night and day."
Now, four years later, embracing the message of the dream, Jim and a group of riders retrace the 330-mile route of his dream on horseback from Lower Brule, South Dakota to Mankato, Minnesota to arrive at the hanging site on the anniversary of the execution. "We can't blame the wasichus anymore. We're doing it to ourselves. We're selling drugs. We're killing our own people. That's what this ride is about, is healing." This is the story of their journey- the blizzards they endure, the Native and Non-Native communities that house and feed them along the way, and the dark history they are beginning to wipe away.
