A fisherman who rescued 47 people after a migrant boat sank off the coast of Lampedusa, Italy, says coastguards stopped him saving more people. He claims rescue workers refused to take people from his full boat so he rescue more, because it was against their protocol. More than 300 people are thought to have died in the disaster

Body Count From Lampedusa Migrant Boat Disaster Rises To 195
Divers searched rough waters off the coast of Sicily on Sunday (October 6) for the bodies of hundreds of migrants whose dream of escaping violence, poverty and oppression for a new life in Europe ended when their boat caught fire and sank.
About 500 migrants were packed onto the boat, which capsized just a kilometre from their destination on Thursday (October 3), according to survivors. The Italian authorities say 195 bodies have been recovered and more than a hundred are still missing.
The coastguard said 84 corpses had been brought to the surface on Sunday, despite 28-mile-per-hour gusts of wind and a metre-high swell. Authorities searched for bodies in and around the sunken boat, which was carrying mainly Eritreans and Somalis.
Though the tiny southern Italian island takes in thousands of immigrants every year and there have been similar wrecks in the past, residents have been shaken by the sheer size of the tragedy.
"We feel very distressed. All you hear people talking about is death, death, and then there are also children, it is a tragedy. It is an endless tragedy," said local man Tommaso di Luigi.
"Usually it's not this bad with seven, eight deaths at most. I've never experienced anything of such a huge scale," he added.
At the height of the migrant influx in 2011, when over 62,000 arrived in Italy, dozens of boats carrying hundreds and even thousands of people were arriving in Lampedusa every day.
Although the numbers have declined, arrivals have continued, leading to a renewed debate in Europe over the wisdom of pouring money into extra sea patrols, radar systems and holding centres.

British Adventurer Rows Boat Across The Pacific
British adventurer Sarah Outen overcame personal demons to return to the water and complete a trans-Pacific journey this summer.
Outen completed a 150-day journey rowing solo from Japan to Alaska, arriving on Monday, September 23th.
"I was really exhausted when I got to land. The final few weeks were really difficult. We were making. . . I was trying to row as much as I possibly could in some quite challenging conditions and, you know, just get in as quickly as possible within a weather-window. Particularly, the last few days my whole body was like jelly - just couldn't find anything left to give!" Outen told Reuters a week later in New York.
The voyage was the latest stage of her 20,000-mile (32,190-kilometer) trek around the globe called "London2London" using only her body power. Since departing London April 1, 2011, the 28-year-old has travelled some 17,700 km (11,000 miles) through Europe, Central Asia, China, Russia and Japan by kayak, bicycle and rowing her 6.4-metre (21 ft) boat.
Outen became the first person in recorded history to row from Japan to Alaska, according to Melanie Johnson, the expedition's project manager.
Residents of Adak rolled out the welcome mat for Outen with bout half the residents coming out to greet her when she reached the shore.
The island community of about 320 people 1,300 miles southwest of Anchorage marks the halfway mark for Outen's global expedition.
However, the expedition was almost washed away in 2012, when her first effort to cross the North Pacific was halted by Tropical Storm Mawar and forced her to return to London for nine months of training and regrouping.
"Last year was Tropical Storm Mawar which damaged my boat, scared the hell out of me, and I couldn't make repairs to the boat to enable me to carry on. So, I came back pretty traumatized from what happened. Psychologically, it's quite a massive thing to be in that sort of situation, particularly by yourself cause there's no one else there that you can relate to, talk to, process it with. And I lost my boat," explained Outen.
"I came home and it all felt very abstract and very huge. It took me a long while to get my head straight again. It was also a massive mission just to get the project off the ground again: get a new boat, sponsors back in place, and go out again. So, it kind of felt like I was facing a lot of demons going out to sea again. I knew that I wanted to do it, but equally there's a kind of big fear inside and a big anxiety about what happened last year, and I knew that I could see those same conditions again. I'm grateful that I didn't - still had some big crazy storms but not quite that level and thankfully the damage that happened at different times was minimal."
Originally, the journey was planned to go from Japan to Vancouver, Canada, but conditions forced Outen to "turn left."
"We made the decision to hang a left and head north, I think it was about day 121, I was less than halfway to Vancouver at that point - the winter's coming in, storms become more frequent and stronger - and so we kind of acknowledged that actually it wasn't going to be Canada this year. It just wasn't an option. The weather had battered us and sort of thwarted those efforts," the adventurer said.
But that wasn't the only danger Outen faced. Her rowboat, named "Happy Socks", flipped over at least three times in heavy seas before righting itself. And on the last leg of the journey, Happy Socks was almost rammed by a container ship when the solar-powered GPD device that beams her location to other ships and receives their location failed because of batteries that ran low due to overcast skies.
However, that did not dim the spirits of the elected member to the Royal Geographic Society. Outen used her time alone on the water to propose to her longtime companion and she is also using the expedition as a fundraiser for different charities that are close to her heart.
Outen was also the first woman and the youngest person to row solo across the Indian Ocean from Australia to Mauritius, accomplishing that feat in 2009 earning her a record in the Guinness Book.

More bodies recovered from Italy boat wreck
Rescue crews are still searching for bodies after a boat sank off Italy's southern coast last week. So far 232 have been recovered, all believed to be migrants from Africa. The number of refugees arriving on Lampedusa is growing each year and the island is struggling to cope. Al Jazeera's Claudio Lavanga reports.

Lampedusa boat sinking: Migrants rescued from sea by Italian coastguard

Footage has emerged showing migrants being rescued by the Italian coastguard off the island of Lampedusa. The video shows two men being pulled from the sea and being wrapped in thermal blankets. Authorities have recovered 111 bodies from the submerged wreck of a boat which had been holding around 500 people.
When a fire broke out onboard, panicked passengers rushed to one side, prompting the vessel to capsize. Officials say more than 300 people are believed to have drowned and they are expecting to find more bodies. Italy has held a day of mourning on Friday for the victims of the tragedy which is one of the worst in Europe's decades-long migrant crisis. Report by Ashley Fudge.

Off the coast of the island of Lampedusa divers have been working to recover bodies from the migrant boat which sank last week. It is harrowing work as two of the divers explained.
"I found myself among those corpses for more than an hour. It was difficult to look straight at their faces, see the wounds, see their tormented expressions, their striving arms. It was extremely difficult," said Riccardo Noile.
"When we were bringing one of the bodies to the surface it turned itself, the face close to my mask as if he was asking for help," said another.
The bodies of more than 200 who perished have now been recovered. It's believed at least 100 remain in the watery grave trapped inside the vessel.
The boat carrying around 500 mainly Eritrean and Somali migrants capsized and sank throwing hundreds into the water. One hundred and fifty-five survivors were rescued.
It's reckoned 30,000 migrants have landed in Italy this year four times the number in 2012. Last week's sinking was one of the worst single incidents of its kind involving migrants crossing to Europe from northern Africa.
EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso is set to visit on Wednesday to discuss joint action on the refugee crisis.
