Cruel World is a 2005 American horror comedy film produced and directed by Kelsey T. Howard. The film is about a psychotic man who loses a reality game show and subsequently kills the host. He uses the house where the show took place to film his own reality show. In the show, several contestants perform challenges, and the losers are killed rather than being sent home.
Cathy, the former star of a reality show similar to "The Bachelor", is now married and living with her husband in the house where the show took place. The house still has several secret rooms and passages, as well as a host of cameras all over the estate.
Philip Markham, who was a contestant on the show, comes to the home for a visit. Cathy is initially put off by his odd behavior, and feels more and more uncomfortable as Philip reminisces about the show. Philip tells Cathy he has sent out applications to colleges all over the country for his own reality show, which will take place in Cathy's house. Philip then murders Cathy and her husband.
"Cruel World" is a song by American recording artist Lana Del Rey, taken from her third studio album, Ultraviolence (2014). The song serves as the album's opening track. It is a melancholy love song that depicts a self-professed crazy girl who's just ditched her drug addict loser of a boyfriend. The song was met with critical acclaim from most reviewers, who praised Del Rey's strong vocal performance and the lyrics.
"Cruel World" is six minutes and 39 seconds long (6:39). It was written and composed by Del Rey and Blake Stranathan, and produced by Dan Auerbach. The song features "apocalyptic" lyrics, and opens with Del Rey singing "I shared my body and my mind with you / But that's all over now / Did what I had to do / Cause its so far past me now." "Cruel World," is of what feels like a sad, reverb-drenched daydream. The song sets the stage for the rest of the album, which simmers with a haunted, yearning feeling but never boils over. Even the most pop-friendly moments here are steeped in patient, jazz-inflected moodiness. Del Rey had an idea for the song without using or mentioning the phase. When Del Rey was asked about the opening track, she explained: "I went down to the beach and I was thinking about everything, personally, The verse is thoughtful and laid back, but then the chorus falls into this world of chaotic and heavy sub-bass." "The juxtaposition of those two worlds, the peaceful beginning and the chaotic chorus, it summed up my personal circumstances of everything going easily and then everything being f---ed up." "It felt like me." Del Rey told Clash magazine that the song is her favorite track on Ultraviolence.
I can't stop the way I feel
But I can penetrate your religion with a nail
You are mine and we are twine
When we radiate in waves together everything is fine
Hello cruel world do you know that you're killing me?
I don't mind but I could use a little sympathy
I've been blind as a fool can be
My dear cruel world do you ever think about me?
I can feel so alone with you right here
And yet I turn to you for comfort in my despair
You are dust and I am bone
And I will love your endless gaze of madness until I turn to stone
Hello cruel world do you know that you're killing me?
I don't mind but I could use a little sympathy
I've been blind as a fool can be
My dear cruel world now I know you are my everything
Please forgive me
Hello cruel world do you know that you're killing me
I don't mind but I could use a little sympathy
I've been blind as only a man can be
