Nashtifan (Persian: نشتيفان; also Romanized as Nashtīfan; also known as Nashtīqan, Nīshāfūn, and Nīshtāfūn) is a city in the Central District, Khvaf County, Razavi Khorasan Province, Iran. At the 2006 census, its population was 6,547, in 1,485 families.

When you think of windmills, the Netherlands might first come to mind. But some of the oldest windmills in the world are in Nashtifan, Iran. Dozens stand atop a wall in the windy city, not far from the Afghanistan border. From a distance, they look like wooden turnstiles. But they are vertical-axis windmills constructed over 1,000 years ago from wood, straw and clay. For centuries, they were used to mill flour. In 2002, the windmills of Nashtifan were declared a national heritage site by Iran.

These amazing windmills are among the oldest in the world. Located in the Iranian town of Nashtifan, initially named Nish Toofan, or "storm's sting," the windmills have withstood winds of up to 74 miles an hour. With the design thought to have been created in eastern Persia between 500-900 A.D., they have been in use for several centuries.

Nashtifan (Persian: نشتيفان; also Romanized as Nashtīfan; also known as Nashtīqan, Nīshāfūn, and Nīshtāfūn) is a city in the Central District, Khvaf County, Razavi Khorasan Province, Iran. At the 2006 census, its population was 6,547, in 1,485 families.
