Ally Capellino - Bums on Seats by Donald Christie
London accessories designer Ally Capellino brings her signature design aesthetic to an iconic piece of furniture, the tubular stacking chair.
Initially conceived by the Bauhaus group, they were the inspiration for many manufacturers in the interwar period in Britain. The PEL (Practical Equipment Limited) name quickly became synonymous with the product, and exploited the interest in modern shapes and design durability. These chairs have been the mainstay of schools, church halls and factories ever since. Originally manufactured by Cox of Solihull, this set has been stripped back to their raw steel frames and taken in a new and inventive direction.
Using the premise ‘Bums on Seats’ as a starting point, Ally looked at the way that we position ourselves whilst seated - ‘left leaning’ or ‘knees up’ for example - and then designed eight variations on the theme. Long time Ally Capellino collaborator, Donald Christie (http://www.donaldchristie.com) has elaborated on the concept producing a hypnotic black and white film. The treatment references the 1957 Oscar winning short ‘A Chairy Tale’ (http://www.nfb.ca/film/a_chairy_tale/) by Norman McLaren and Claude Jutra, and is a playful take on Brechtian theatre.
Ally Capellino’s London factory has made up the seats, which have been stitched and hand polished, before being branded with their individual name. The sling seats and backs are manufactured from the same Italian bridle leather as Ally Capellino’s belts and bag straps.
During the London Design Festival (http://www.londondesignfestival.com/) there will be a ‘Bums on Seats’ installation at each of Ally Capellino’s London shops, in Calvert Avenue, Shoreditch and at the junction of Portobello and Golborne Roads. The installations have been designed by another regular collaborator and PEL chair enthusiast, Rupert Blanchard (http://www.rupertblanchard.com/).
Donald Christie, Rupert Blanchard and Ally, will be discussing the project during the London Design Festival at the V&A;'s Hochhauser Auditorium, Sackler Centre, at 2pm on the 19th September.

BooKKeepers – A True Fiction: Kafka, Alive and Well in San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 10, 2013 – GenerationTheatre premières a new production of BooKKeepers – A True Fiction, by Roland David Valayre. The production runs October 10 through October 27, 2013 at the Southside Theatre, Fort Mason Center. Curtain time is 8:00pm Thursday through Saturday, and 3:00pm on Sunday. GenerationTheatre’s production of BooKKeepers benefits from the collaboration of the Czech Consulate General and the Goethe Institut in San Francisco.
In a world full of narratives “based on a true story,” BooKKeepers is an avowedly false story that never leaves the truth out of its sight. “The idea of BooKKeepers’s fiction came to me from three true facts,” says David Valayre, who authored and directs the play. “First, I read somewhere that Nabokov believed he recognized Kafka in a Berlin tram, in 1927 – three years after Kafka’s death. I then started fantasizing about Kafka faking his own death at the sanatorium to get away from an impending unwanted marriage and his family. Second, I came across a photo of Yichzak Löwy, who was a Yiddish theater actor in Poland, and became a close friend of Kafka’s. The physical resemblance between the two men took the plot one step further: Was it Löwy or Kafka who was alive and well in Berlin, in 1937? Third, in 1937, Adolf Eichmann, master bookkeeper of the Holocaust, was in Berlin, taking Hebrew lessons from a rabbi, allegedly to “better understand” the Jews.
BooKKeepers first opened in 2010 in San Francisco, at the now-defunct Off-Market Theater. Five actors from the original cast of nine (Charles Keen, Martha Luehrmann, Nathan Putnam, Andrea Satin and Ket Watters) are part of this new production. The influx of actors new to BooKKeepers, if not to Generation Theatre (Nastassia Maltsava was “Fanny” in Marcel Pagnol’s Marius throughout August) is but one facet of this revival. “We’re constantly revisiting everything,” says Valayre. “Different set, new music, entirely new look to the play. This time, we want to tip our hat to Yichzak Löwy and the Yiddish theater of the inter-war period. Like many Yiddish plays, BooKKepers rests on a fracture in time and identity. It is a story about a story.”
BooKKeepers, written and directed by Roland David Valayre, with Charles Keen, Jonathan Loo, Martha Luehrmann, Nastassia Maltsava, Shawn Morgan, Nathan Putnam, Andrea Satin, Alejandro Torres, Katrina van Winkle, Ket Watters, and Christopher Weddle. October 10-27, 2013 - Southside Theatre, Fort Mason Center, Bldg D, San Francisco.

The Spirit of '45 - The Full Interviews - Trailer
The full extended interviews with The Spirit of '45 contributors are now avaiable to be watched on Vimeo on Demand. With twenty-two interviews, totalling over six hours of footage, this is a great offer for anyone who watched the film and wants to know more, along with fans of Ken Loach, and anyone interested in the social and political history of the UK.
The Spirit of '45
An impassioned documentary about how the spirit of unity which buoyed Britain during the war years carried through to create a vision of a fairer, united society. 1945 was a pivotal year in British history. The unity that carried Britain through the war allied to the bitter memories of the inter-war years led to a vision of a better society. The spirit of the age was to be our brother’s and our sister’s keeper. Director Ken Loach has used film from Britain’s regional and national archives, alongside sound recordings and contemporary interviews, to create a rich political and social narrative. The Spirit of ’45 hopes to illuminate and celebrate a period of unprecedented community spirit in the UK, the impact of which endured for many years and which may yet be rediscovered today

Short Story of a City
Warsaw, the capital of Poland was almost entirely destroyed during the WWII. Maria, the protagonist of this film is one of the few original inhabitants who remained and who knows the city from its four distinctive periods: the Interwar Years, Nazi Occupation, Socialism and Postsocialism. Maria has been changing together with Warsaw and, throughout the years, she actively participated in shaping of this vibrant and fascinating city. The documentary was made in 2008 as part of my BA Anthropology and Media degree at Goldsmiths, University of London.
