In 2012 the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame finally inducted singer-songwriter Laura Nyro. As insane as it may sound, this was an award and a acknowledgement about the body of music and songs that was 20 years too long for the music public to recognize. Laura's music continues embody a soul of the music she grew up listening to as a child. In fact, her genius was ahead of her time in her time. Penning songs like "Stoney End," "Sweet Blindness," "Eli's Coming," "Save The Country," "Stoned Soul Picnic," and "Wedding Bell Blues," she defined an alternative to the formulaic pop songs that many of Laura's contemporaries like Carole King and Ellie Greenwich were producing during the mid-to-late 1960's.
Born Laura Nigro on October 18, 1947 in the Bronx, New York, she grew up listening to her parents eclectic records ranging from Opera to classical to jazz music. Laura was composing music since she was eight and had ear for music. Upon a meeting set-up by her father with record executive Artie Mogull, he became her manager and Laura penned her first successful song "And When I Die," which was recorded by the legendary folk trio Peter, Paul, and Mary. In the late 60's she signed with Columbia Records where she recorded her landmark second record "Eli and the Thirteenth Confession." Throughout her career Laura recorded nine studio albums including the classic "Gonna Take a Miracle" with soul group LaBelle and "New York Tendaberry."
Laura died of ovarian cancer on April 8, 1997 at the age of 49.
On August 11th, 2012 at Lincoln Center as part of the Out of Doors Series and the 29th Annual Roots of American Music Festival, friends and family performed as part of a program celebrating the life of Laura Nyro titled the "Triple Goddess Twilight Revue." The Artistic Director of the program was Archie Walker who took the most important songs of Laura's career and had her friends perform them as well as give their personal testimonies and reflect on what Laura and her music means to them. The artists that performed at the tribute were Jan Nigro & The Ebony Hillbillies, Gil-T a.k.a Gil Bianchini, Desmond Child & Rogue, Kate Ferber, Felix Cavaliere, Sarah Dash & Nona Hendryx of LeBelle, Melba Moore, and Melissa Manchester.
Columbia Records released a two-cd compilation of Laura's music entitled "Stone Soul Picnic: The Best of Laura Nyro" that showcases her music of 25 years while she was with the label. Currently, "December's Boudoir," a documentary about the life and times of Laura is also in the works and is directed by Maria Florio.

In 1967 Atlantic became a wholly owned subsidiary of Warner Bros.-Seven Arts, now the Warner Music Group, and expanded into rock and pop music, signing Cream, Led Zeppelin, Yes and Foreigner. In 2004 Atlantic Records and its sister label Elektra Records merged into Atlantic Records Group. Craig Kallman is currently Chairman of Atlantic Records. Label co-founder Ahmet Ertegün served as Founding Chairman until his death on December 14, 2006, at age 83.
