Gondia district (Marathi: गोंदिया जिल्हा), also known as Gondiya district, is an administrative district in the state of Maharashtra in India. The district headquarters are located at Gondia (Gondiya). The district occupies an area of 5,431 km² and has a population of 1,200,707 of which 11.95% were urban (as of 2001).^[1] The district is part of Nagpur Division.

History[link]

This district was carved out of Bhandara district in 1999.

Gondia is also known as Rice City, as it is a rice producing district and has about 250 rice mills near the vicinity of city. it is also a major trading place. The Mumbai-Nagpur-Kolkata Road is the only national highway passing through the district, which covers to a total distance of 99.37 km. Gondia has bus connectivity to Jabalpur, Nagpur and Balaghat.

It is currently a part of the Red Corridor.^[2]

The district is divided into 2 sub-divisions, Gondia and Deori which are further divided into 8 talukas. Each sub-division consists of 4 talukas. The Gondia sub-division consists of Gondia, Goregaon, Tirora and Arjuni Moregaon talukas while Deori sub-division consists of Deori, Amgaon, Salekasa and Sadak Arjuni talukas. The district consists 556 Gram panchayats, 8 Panchayat Samitis and 954 revenue villages. Two municiplities in this district are Gondia and Tiroda.

The district has 4 Vidhan Sabha constituencies: Arjuni-Morgaon (SC), Gondiya, Tirora and Amgaon (ST). While the first three are part of Bhandara-Gondiya Lok Sabha constituency, the last one is part of Gadchiroli-Chimur (ST) Lok Sabha constituency.^[3]

In 2006 the Ministry of Panchayati Raj named Gondia one of the country's 250 most backward districts (out of a total of 640).^[4] It is one of the twelve districts in Maharashtra currently receiving funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF).^[4]

Demographics[link]

According to the 2011 census Gondia district has a population of 1,322,331,^[5] roughly equal to the nation of Mauritius^[6] or the US state of New Hampshire.^[7] This gives it a ranking of 369th in India (out of a total of 640).^[5] The district has a population density of 253 inhabitants per square kilometre (660 /sq mi) .^[5] Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 10.13 %.^[5] Gondiya has a sex ratio of 996 females for every 1000 males,^[5] and a literacy rate of 85.41 %.^[5]

Gondia, or Gondiya (Marathi: गोंदिया), is a city in the state of Maharashtra in western India, and is the administrative headquarters of Gondia District. Gondia is also known as Rice City by local people due to abundance of rice mills in the area. Gondia is very close to Madhya Pradesh state, and is considered the gateway to Maharashtra from central and eastern India. It has more than 1000 rice mills and some small scale tobacco industries.

Gondia experiences extreme variations in temperature with very hot Summers and very cold Winters and an average relative humidity of 62 percent.

Bhavbhuti was an 8th century scholar of India noted for his plays and poetry, written in Sanskrit. His plays are considered equivalent to the works of Kalidas. Bhavbhuti was born in a Deshastha Brahmin family of Padmapura(Amgaon), Vidarbha, central India, in Gondia district.Bhavabhuti Maha Vidyalya one of the famous places in Gondia District has been given the name in the honour of Bhavbhuti.

Gondia Railway Station is an important junction and has heavy passenger and goods traffic. The station has four platforms and another four platforms are under construction. All platforms have adequately been provided with amenities such as potable water, tea stalls, benches and waiting sheds. There is a fruit stall and a book stall too. The station is also equipped with waiting rooms for passengers travelling by upper accomodation classes and a waiting hall for passengers travelling by lower accomodation classes.

Gondia is situated on the broad gauge Mumbai - Kolkata railway route. The Gondia - Jabalpur Junction (Madhya Pradesh) section of West Central Railway runs north - south, along the valley of the Wainganga River. The line was formerly narrow gauge (2 ft 6 in (762 mm)) along its entire length, but the section between Gondia and Balaghat was converted to broad gauge in 2005-2006,^[1] connecting Balaghat to India's national broad gauge network for the first time. Work is underway to convert the Balaghat - Jabalpur section to broad gauge as well.

Gondia Airport is situated near Kamtha Village, 15 kms from Gondia City. The airport, constructed by The British during Second World War, is home to a pilot training centre called Rajiv Gandhi National Flying Institute, which is a joint venture of CAE Inc, Canada and Airports Authority of India. NIATAM (National Institute of Aviation Technology and Management) is also functional near Gondia Airport. The airport has night landing facilities however there are are no scheduled commercial flights into Gondia. The nearest airports with scheduled flights are at Raipur and Nagpur.

Durga festival of Gondia is very famous in central India.Gondia attracts thousands of people during navratra. The people of Gondia spends lacs of rupees in one pandol. Decoration of Pandol is very very beautiful and giving general message to all people. More than 100 pandols can be seen in Gondia during navratra.

Gondia is well surrounded by hills and forests, and numerous other tourist spots around the city. The most beautiful places are Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary, Navegoan bandh National Park / Bird Sanctuary, which hosts many foreign birds. Pratapgarh is famous for the Shiv temple situated on the large hill.

Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary is just 45 km from Gondia. Tigers and tigresses can also be viewed here. Hajra Falls is also a major tourist spot, 45 kms from City. There is an ancient Shiv temple also,famously known as "Nagra Shiv Temple" ;as it is situated in the vicinity of the village Nagra. The Maha-Shivratri festival celebrated in Nagra attracts many a tourists from all over Maharashtra. All tourist locations are accessible by the trains and buses networks around Gondia. More than 100,000 tourist came to Gondia annually to see the green heaven of Gondia. Navegoan badh bird century is 90 km from Gondia, and near the bird senctury there is very big Dam/Lake.

There are also two Guru-Dwaras,a Mosque, two Churches and a number of Temples situated in the city. The Durga Temple and The Rani Sati Dhaam are the recent additions in the list.
