"Even now, after twenty-five years of intensive research, we feel that great deeds still to be done, we have made many discoveries, Pierre Curie, in his suggestions we have found in his notes, and thoughts he expressed to me, has helped to guide us by much. But no one of us can do much, if each of us, perhaps, can catch some gleam of knowledge which modestly insufficient in itself, may add to man's dream of truth, it is by this small candles in our darkness that we see before us, little by little, the dim outlines of that great plan that shaped the universe, and I am among those, who think that for this reason, Science has great beauty, and with its great spiritual strength, will in time cleanse this world of its evils, its ignorance, its poverty, diseases, wars and heartaches. Look for the clear light of truth, look for unknown new roads, even when man's sight is keener far than now, divine wonder will never failed him. Every age has its own dream, leave then the dreams of yesterday, you, take the torch of knowledge, and build the palace of the future." -- Marie Curie [VIDEO &TRANSCRIPT;: Hek G. Yelo]

Here are 10 things you didn’t know about IQ. Though a person’s IQ is only one of many aspects related to their abilities and potential, it’s a number that gets a lot of attention. Here are 10 little things you may not know about the intelligence measurement. Number 10. People with high IQs are prone to drinking and drug use. A number of scientific studies show a correlation between exhibiting advanced intelligence during childhood and having substance issues later in life. Why this is remains largely unknown. Number 9. Breastfeeding helps. Babies who were fed breast milk were found to get higher scores on IQ tests administered years later. In a year’s time it could lead to a hike of just over 4 verbal points. Number 8. Intelligent people stay up later. According to a psychologist from the London School of Economics and Political Science it’s a product of evolution. No longer are humans bound to the hours of light provided by nature, and it’s the smart ones who’ve figured that out first. Number 7. Women with larger breast score higher. That’s according to a University of Chicago study that found subjects with bigger bra sizes also had bigger numbers as test scores. That was true when comparing large to medium and medium to small. Number 6. Eyes are the window to the brain. People with blue eyes are more likely to be academic achievers than those with irises of brown. Stephen Hawking, Marie Curie, and Alexander Fleming are but a few of them. Number 5. Atheism is linked to higher IQs. It’s believed the correlation stems from intelligent people’s preference for logic and proof, two things that religion doesn’t consistently provide. Thus, faith-based systems tend not to appeal to them. Number 4. Scores can change over time. A variety of factors influence testing outcomes. Adjustments in one’s education level, familial surroundings, and work environment can all play a role in numbers going up or down. Number 3. Birth order matters. That’s particularly good news if you’re the oldest child, as those are the ones who usually have higher IQs and get better grades. The kids who come along later tend to not get the super-attentive kind of parenting that helps foster the extra smarts. Number 2. 115 is the magic number. People who have that score or higher are the ones who can handle just about any job, and do it at all levels. Only 15 percent of the population falls into that category. Number 1. Left-handers have a leg up. Among the many theories as to why they’re deemed as being smarter than righties is their superior ability to engage in divergent thought. It’s what allows them make connections between objects and words in a way that most can’t. What do you find most interesting about IQs?

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Empowering women is a key part for a nation to grow. Jenny argues that, with the roles that women play in the society, they should be given greater attention to by society. Development strategist Jenny Elmaco is the first Asian Marie Curie Fellow on Sustainable Peacebuilding of the European Commission. She spent the past decade living and working in Europe understanding and deconstructing governance and civil society. She professes Vienna is her hometown and Barcelona her backyard but maintains a close relationship with Dumaguete - her birthplace. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

noodls 2015-04-08Marie Skłodowska-Curie (7 November 1867 – 4 July 1934) was a French-Polish physicist and chemist famous for her pioneering research on radioactivity. She was the first person honored with two Nobel Prizes—in physics and chemistry. She was the first female professor at the University of Paris, and in 1995 became the first woman to be entombed on her own merits in the Panthéon in Paris.
She was born Maria Salomea Skłodowska ([ˈmarja salɔˈmɛa skwɔˈdɔfska]) in Warsaw, in what was then the Kingdom of Poland. She studied at Warsaw's clandestine Floating University and began her practical scientific training in Warsaw. In 1891, aged 24, she followed her older sister Bronisława to study in Paris, where she earned her higher degrees and conducted her subsequent scientific work. She shared her 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics with her husband Pierre Curie and with the physicist Henri Becquerel. Her daughter Irène Joliot-Curie and son-in-law, Frédéric Joliot-Curie, would similarly share a Nobel Prize. She was the sole winner of the 1911 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Skłodowska-Curie was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the only woman to date to win in two fields, and the only person to win in multiple sciences.
Neil Alden Armstrong (born August 5, 1930) is an American former astronaut, test pilot, aerospace engineer, university professor, United States Naval Aviator, and the first person to set foot upon the Moon.
Before becoming an astronaut, Armstrong was in the United States Navy and served in the Korean War. After the war, he served as a test pilot at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) High-Speed Flight Station, now known as the Dryden Flight Research Center, where he flew over 900 flights in a variety of aircraft. As a research pilot, Armstrong served as project pilot on the F-100 Super Sabre A and C variants, F-101 Voodoo, and the Lockheed F-104A Starfighter. He also flew the Bell X-1B, Bell X-5, North American X-15, F-105 Thunderchief, F-106 Delta Dart, B-47 Stratojet, KC-135 Stratotanker, and was one of eight elite pilots involved in the paraglider research vehicle program (Paresev). He graduated from Purdue University and the University of Southern California.
A participant in the U.S. Air Force's Man In Space Soonest and X-20 Dyna-Soar human spaceflight programs, Armstrong joined the NASA Astronaut Corps in 1962. His first spaceflight was the NASA Gemini 8 mission in 1966, for which he was the command pilot, becoming one of the first U.S. civilians to fly in space.[citation needed] On this mission, he performed the first manned docking of two spacecraft with pilot David Scott. Armstrong's second and last spaceflight was as mission commander of the Apollo 11 moon landing mission on July 20, 1969. On this mission, Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin descended to the lunar surface and spent 2½ hours exploring while Michael Collins remained in orbit in the Command Module. Armstrong was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Richard Nixon along with Collins and Aldrin, the Congressional Space Medal of Honor by President Jimmy Carter in 1978, and the Congressional Gold Medal in 2009.
