When Dwayne Whitney started his trucking business decades ago he had only one truck. Today he has eighteen and 20 employees. But that's about to change. "The State of California says my trucks are killing people," says Whitney. "What do you say to that?" In a few years, new air quality regulations approved by the California Air Resources Board will render Whitney's entire fleet illegal. "New CARB rules are putting me out of business," he says. CARB claims that diesel particulates, a type of pollution emitted from buses and trucks, contributes to 2000 premature deaths in California each year. But UCLA epidemiologist Dr. James Enstrom says the number should be closer to zero. In 2005 Enstrom authored an extensive study that found no relationship between diesel particulates and premature deaths. He says his study, as well as other evidence that agrees with it, have been ignored by an agency bent on passing ever more stringent regulations regardless of their effect on California's economy. Enstrom blew the whistle on CARB for, among other things, failing to publicize that the lead author of the study that was used to justify the new regulations falsified his education history (he purchased his PhD from an online diploma mill). But UCLA didn't come to Enstrom's defense. In fact, officials informed him that, after 34 years at the university, he was out of a job. Planet Green (formerly Discovery Home and Leisure and Discovery Home) is a television network on satellite TV and digital cable TV in the U.S. run by Discovery Communications. Originally launched on June 1, 1998 as the main competitor to HGTV, the channel offered programming ranging from do-it-yourself to cooking to interior design/landscaping to party planning. On June 4, 2008, the channel relaunched as Planet Green and is the first channel dedicated to the subject of ecologically friendly living. Major advertisers General Motors (GM), S.C. Johnson, Bosch Appliances, The Home Depot, Frito-Lay, Waste Management (WM), Johnson & Johnson, Dow Chemical, Whirlpool Appliances, Clorox, and Wachovia Bank have signed on to be the initial advertisers to the network, bringing in major advertising dollars. Planet Green aims to succeed by attempting to make the crisis become an even larger topic in an informative and entertaining way while not preaching about the subject to its audience. The network launched with 250 hours of eco-related programming and parent Discovery Communications invested US$50 million on the creation of the network as well as advertising dollars to run the network.
Relaunch
Discovery Channel set plans to start a 24-hour channel in the second half of 2008 focused on eco-friendly living, as part of a push into the rising environmental movement with shows like "Ten Ways To Save the Planet". Discovery Home was retired and its satellite carriage replaced by a Discovery-owned environmentally themed channel named "Planet Green" at 6:00 pm on June 4, 2008. The channel focuses on environmental issues and ecological living. Discovery is investing $50 million in original programming for the rebranded channel with shows such as a weekly eco-newscast series with Bob Woodruff of ABC News. The project started shortly after the Discovery Channel bought the website Treehugger.com from owners Graham Hill and Ken Rother.
Programming
Planet Green has many series either already airing or in the works. Some of these shows include celebrities such as: Emeril Lagasse, Adrian Grenier, Leonardo Dicaprio, Ludacris, Tommy Lee, Tom Bergeron, SuChin Pak, Maria Menounos, Bob Woodruff and Tom Green. In addition, celebrities give 'green' tips in the network's "will be back/we now return to" ID's. Planet Green is available in most areas of the United States through local Satellite and Cable providers such as Dish Network, DirecTV, Comcast, Charter Communications, Verizon FiOS, Cox Communications, Time Warner Cable, and Knology.Planet Green HD is the high definition simulcast of the standard definition channel and is carried through various cable and satellite providers.
