Kenya: attaque d'un centre commercial, au moins 30 morts

Twenty four hours. Fifty nine dead. About 30 hostages still inside.
Those are the grim numbers a day after attackers stormed an upscale Nairobi mall, spraying bullets and holding shoppers captive.
By noon Sunday, as grim-faced Kenyan soldiers warily searched the five-story building -- and as al-Shabaab maintained its defiant stance -- the siege was no closer to a resolution.
Kenyan government and Western diplomatic sources said al Shabaab militants were holding about 30 hostages inside the shopping center.
Officials believe 10 to 15 gunmen are involved, State House spokesman Manoah Esipisu said Sunday.
The attack has already left 59 people dead, government minister Joseph Ole Lenku said Sunday. Another 175 were injured.
The attack Saturday targeted a popular weekend meeting spot. Kenyans and expatriates gather at the luxurious Westgate mall on weekends to drink lattes, catch a movie or browse through the more than 80 stores.
Al-Shabaab, al Qaeda\'s proxy in Somalia, claimed responsibility, and said it was not backing down. In a message on its Twitter feed, the group said \

The second day of Bo Xilai\'s trial has wrapped up, and the Chinese regime has taken a pretty different approach to the first day, at least in terms of what they\'ve decided to make public. It\'s probably because during the first day, Bo Xilai flatly denied the bribery allegations against him, and called one witness a mad dog.

So on Friday, as the trial continued, state media stopped the live broadcast. The court in Jinan, Shandong province was also much, much slower in releasing details about what was said in court.

We did find out though that Bo Xilai\'s wife, Gu Kailai - who\'s currently in jail herself, provided evidence against Bo via a pre-recorded video. She said that Bo was old friends with businessman Xu Ming, and that Bo was fully aware that Xu had paid for their son, Bo Guagua\'s tuition in expensive schools overseas. She said Bo also knew she had gotten Xu Ming to help her buy a mansion in Eruope, and that Bo had checked with her to see whether it would be safe.

And in response to that testimony, just like he did on Thursday, Bo again denied all of those claims, and then said that his wife had gone crazy.

The turn of events has been pretty interesting. Most people thought the whole trial would be tightly scripted. But Bo Xilai\'s stubborn denials seem to have thrown things off course.

So, why would Bo Xilai go off script? Wouldn\'t Chinese leaders have struck a deal with him before even allowing the trial to start? Well, the leadership, including Communist Party Chief Xi Jinping probably thought they had deal. But they didn\'t realize how cunning Bo would be.

He\'s probably gambling on the fact that Xi Jinping doesn\'t have it in him to actually give him a death sentence. Both Xi and Bo grew up as part of the Chinese regime\'s princelings circle. If Xi took down one of their own, so to speak, it may put the other princelings on alert and this would alienate Xi - something he wouldn\'t want because he\'s still consolidating power.

So, he knows he won\'t be killed. At 64 year\'s old, if Bo confesses and get 15 or 20 years in jail, he\'d be well beyond 80 by the time he gets out. Compare that to if he denies everything, and has the book thrown at him and get life imprisonment or a suspended life sentence....that\'s probably not too different an outcome.

Plus, because the allegations in court implicates Bo\'s son, Bo Guagua, Bo possibly wants to protect him by just denying the charges.

If Xi Jinping did make a deal with Bo, then I\'d say he really made a deal with devil. We\'ve talked about how Bo Xilai\'s actual crimes go so far beyond what these current charges are...things like working with the faction of this former Chinese leader and persecuting Falun Gong and being implicated in killing people for their organs and selling corpses...But these crimes involved competing factions within the Communist leadership, and if they were exposed, could literally end the Party\'s ability to maintain legitimacy. Bo knows this very well, so he really thinks he\'s got nothing to lose.

Of course -- all of this broohaaing could actually be scripted -- ie, the Chinese regime is putting on this show so it can say, see, the law works perfectly here, the accused had every chance to face his accusers and defend the charges. But he\'s still guilty, so he\'ll be sent to jail.

Unless that is what\'s happening, then the trial really signals something pretty scary for the Communist Party. Because the top leaders have lost their ability to maintain control over one of the biggest trial in modern Chinese politics, and the whole world is watching. If they can\' scrap together some resemblance of order in this critical case...then, who knows who else will break rank and deal another big blow to the Party?

How do you guys think this case will play out?

She is widely expected to win a third term, although who she will form a coalition with is less clear. The leader of the opposition SPD party, Peer Steinbrueck, voted in Bonn, telling people there he "felt very good" and that it was "finally time for the voters to decide." The most recent opinion polls show his centre-left party at 26 percent, lagging 13 points behind Merkel's conservative CDU, which has around 39 percent support. All eyes will be on how Merkel's coalition partner, the business-friendly FDP, do. They have seen their support slide from 14.6 percent in 2009 to just 5 percent. If they fall below 5 percent they won't get any seats and Merkel could be forced to court the SPD. She governed with them in a right-left coalition in 2005-09; however Steinbrueck has said he won't be in a coalition with Merkel. For now, Germans continue voting. The first exit polls will be published at 6 pm (1600 GMT.) Find us on: Youtube http://bit.ly/zr3upY Facebook http://www.facebook.com/euronews.fans Twitter http://twitter.com/euronews

Al-Shabaab, al Qaeda's proxy in Somalia, claimed responsibility, and said it was not backing down. In a message on its Twitter feed, the group said "all Muslims" were escorted from the mall before the attack. Bo Xilai Goes Off Script in Court: How and Why?
Bo Xilai Goes Off Script in Court: How and Why?
  • Order:
  • Duration: 3:40
  • Updated: 23 Aug 2013
The second day of Bo Xilai's trial has wrapped up, and the Chinese regime has taken a pretty different approach to the first day, at least in terms of what they've decided to make public. It's probably because during the first day, Bo Xilai flatly denied the bribery allegations against him, and called one witness a mad dog. So on Friday, as the trial continued, state media stopped the live broadcast. The court in Jinan, Shandong province was also much, much slower in releasing details about what was said in court. We did find out though that Bo Xilai's wife, Gu Kailai - who's currently in jail herself, provided evidence against Bo via a pre-recorded video. She said that Bo was old friends with businessman Xu Ming, and that Bo was fully aware that Xu had paid for their son, Bo Guagua's tuition in expensive schools overseas. But Bo Xilai's stubborn denials seem to have thrown things off course. So, why would Bo Xilai go off script? Wouldn't Chinese leaders have struck a deal with him before even allowing the trial to start? Well, the leadership, including Communist Party Chief Xi Jinping probably thought they had deal. But they didn't realize how cunning Bo would be. He's probably gambling on the fact that Xi Jinping doesn't have it in him to actually give him a death sentence. Both Xi and Bo grew up as part of the Chinese regime's princelings circle. If Xi took down one of their own, so to speak, it may put the other princelings on alert and this would alienate Xi - something he wouldn't want because he's still consolidating power. So, he knows he won't be killed. At 64 year's old, if Bo confesses and get 15 or 20 years in jail, he'd be well beyond 80 by the time he gets out. Compare that to if he denies everything, and has the book thrown at him and get life imprisonment or a suspended life sentence....that's probably not too different an outcome. Plus, because the allegations in court implicates Bo's son, Bo Guagua, Bo possibly wants to protect him by just denying the charges. If Xi Jinping did make a deal with Bo, then I'd say he really made a deal with devil. We've talked about how Bo Xilai's actual crimes go so far beyond what these current charges are...things like working with the faction of this former Chinese leader and persecuting Falun Gong and being implicated in killing people for their organs and selling corpses...But these crimes involved competing factions within the Communist leadership, and if they were exposed, could literally end the Party's ability to maintain legitimacy. Bo knows this very well, so he really thinks he's got nothing to lose. Of course -- all of this broohaaing could actually be scripted -- ie, the Chinese regime is putting on this show so it can say, see, the law works perfectly here, the accused had every chance to face his accusers and defend the charges. But he's still guilty, so he'll be sent to jail. Unless that is what's happening, then the trial really signals something pretty scary for the Communist Party. Because the top leaders have lost their ability to maintain control over one of the biggest trial in modern Chinese politics, and the whole world is watching. If they can' scrap together some resemblance of order in this critical case...then, who knows who else will break rank and deal another big blow to the Party? How do you guys think this case will play out?

Westgate Mall Shooting Nairobi Kenya. 50 WOUNDED westgate mall shooting nairobi When kenya 59 DEAD Gunmen Ambush Mall. Gunmen attacked an upscale shopping mall in the Kenyan capital on Saturday, leading to a fierce gunbattle with police and leaving at least 20 people dead, the Kenyan Red Cross said. Fifty more people were wounded in the attack at the mall in Nairobi, said Abbas Gullet, head of the Kenyan Red Cross. A security agent told CNN's Lillian Leposo at the scene that the violence was a terrorist attack, but officials had yet to confirm that information, Leposo told CNN. "They have strong reason that these men are terrorists," Leposo said. The gunmen shot one person inside his car and two more people on the street as they entered the mall area, Leposo said. Confusion continued about the origin of the gunmen, Leposo said. The attackers appeared to be of Somali origin, a Kenyan government source and Western diplomatic sources told CNN. But Leposo said there were reports that the gunmen were wearing masks, obscuring any identification. Meanwhile, the army was mobilized to the mall, and two armored vehicles and an army helicopter joined police as both agencies were trying to secure the four-story mall floor by floor, Leposo said. As distressed people are pulled out of the mall, they are surrounded by heavy security and are able to speak with family and authorities only, Leposo said. The gunmen burst into the mall and shot indiscriminately, taking some people hostage, according to a senior Kenyan government source. Several hours into the seige, gunshots inside the mall could still be heard by people outside the mall at about 10:30 a.m. Eastern, Leposo said. Two years ago, there was a security alert sent the ex-patriot community to avoid the high-end mall because of reports of a planned attack at the mall, Leposo said. One witness Saturday recounted the outburst of bullets inside the mall. "All of a sudden we heard some shots and people rushing," said Zulobia Kassam, who was having coffee at the mall. "We realized we were under attack. We rushed to the back, trying to hide and we heard random shots from everywhere -- upstairs, downstairs." She said they stayed in hiding for about 40 minutes before sneaking out through a back door. "People were petrified, crying, praying," she said. "We were told there were hostages being held." It was unclear how many hostages the attackers took, but police are trying to negotiate for their release and retake the building, according to the source. Crowds dashed down the streets as soldiers in military fatigues crawled under cars to get closer to the mall, guns cocked. Surveillance helicopters flew overhead. Police took those rescued from the building to a secluded place for vetting to ensure they were not attackers. They streamed away from the mall in a straight line, arms raised up in the air. The military asked local media not to televise anything live because the gunmen are watching the screens in the mall. "We urge Kenyans to keep off Westgate mall, adjacent roads and its environs until further notice," the interior ministry said in a statement. "We're doing our job to ensure that everyone is evacuated to safety," the ministry said. "This is a scene of crime, let police do their job."
