Richie Hawtin presents Plastikman Live 1.5
http://plastikman.com/live // http://www.residentadvisor.net/plastikmantour
Richie Hawtin's iconic alter-ego Plastikman will embark on a full live tour in late-2011 in a new upgraded 1.5 format as it continues to evolve and push technology & live performance forward.
Plastikman is arguably one of the only live shows around where all aspects of the performance - music, lighting, audio, visuals and real-time audience interaction via the SYNK App - are controlled by a single on-stage performer. The Plastikman live experience has been developed by the electronic visionary Richie Hawtin, Derivative & his production team over the past ten years. In 2010, readers of the largest electronic music portal Resident Advisor voted Plastikman as the ʻnumber oneʼ live electronic show of the year.
Richie Hawtinʼs Plastikman creation returned in 2010 and debuted its new look at Timewarp in Mannheim in March of that year. This version toured festivals the world over, establishing an unrivalled reputation as one of the most spectacular electronic live shows of all time, and quickly united a new generation of music fans with those who had followed the Plastikman project from its groundbreaking innovations in the 1990s. The Plastikman logo once again has returned to the forefront of the electronic movement as EDM (electronic dance music) fever gripped North America and Plastikman performed acclaimed shows at Electric Daisy Carnival and Canadaʼs Mutek.
Hawtin and his team have continued to develop and evolve the show - incorporating brand new Plastikman music, visuals and interactive technologies. Plastikman Live 1.5 appears next with a debut show in Ibiza at Amnesia for the 'I Want My MTV' concert series (August 5 2011), followed by a performance in New York City for the Electric Zoo festival on Memorial Day weekend (September 2 2011) before the European tour begins in Budapest at Hungary's Bonusz festival in October.
The updates of the show have once again been created within Hawtin's fully-collaborative lighting, visual and interactive team: Ali Demirel & Jarrett Smith of Derivative (TouchDesigner visuals); Matthias Vollrath (lighting integrations); Jeremy Jacobs (JPLS) & Johannes Kramer (sonic upgrades); and Robert Hexler & Bryan McDade (interactivity).
As with all previous dates, Plastikman Live will be fully interactive for any fans with the free SYNK iPhone application, which itself has been relaunched with new features including a live chat, live behind-the-curtain camera feed and more interactive elements, making the show one of the only genuinely interactive concert experiences in the world today.
Richie Hawtin aka Plastikman states: "I'm incredibly excited to finally take Plastikman on its first standalone tour. These dates will represent the last opportunities for fans to catch Plastikman Live in its current form: the 1.5 version of the show we've spent nearly a year of fine-tuning. After that, Plastikman will be returning to the shadows to begin work on a brand new 2.0 concept. The fall tour will be full of surprises, and the performance will continue to be spontaneous and unique for every show -- the way I believe live music should be performed in 2011."
Support on the tour will come from Minus artists including Marco Carola, Magda, Gaiser and Ambivalent - with full line-ups for each date to be announced shortly.
The Plastikman Live 2011 tour is in proud association with media & ticket partner Resident Advisor.

State of the City - The Decade of San Antonio: A Big City transforming into a Great City 1/28/10
Mayor Julián Castro presented his first State of the City Address on Thursday, January 28, 2010, and proclaimed San Antonio as a city on the move that will vault forward economically in the coming decade.
"This is the decade of San Antonio, the decade of our emergence as an economic powerhouse nationally and internationally," Castro said. "We'll get there by building up brainpower and opportunity, making vibrant our public spaces, and getting the fundamentals of city government right."
Mayor Castro told a record crowd of more than 900 business and community leaders that his administration will not hide from the city's most difficult issues, which include raising the educational attainment level of the local workforce and investing in the city's urban core.
"Great cities are defined by their downtowns. San Antonio must invest in downtown and make it a magnet for residents and visitors alike," Castro said. "In these next few years, we will put a new streetcar system on the ground, redevelop our beloved Hemisfair, and enhance our Riverwalk to breathe new life into our downtown."
On Jobs:
"The top priority for 2010 is creating jobs for San Antonians. Our city has fared better than most American communities during this downturn, but we must work to fare better. 20,000 net new jobs in 2010 is the goal."
Green Economy:
"We must embrace new economic opportunities. San Antonio can and should become a leader in the green economy by investing in green job training, incentivizing green manufacturing and leading the way in the use of renewables to meet our energy needs."

Thank you.
Thank you very much for that introduction, Carri. You've already shown in your short time wonderful leadership here at the Chamber. I want to thank you and Richard Perez and all the folks at the Chamber for your tremendous leadership in the city. I particularly enjoyed the opportunity to work with ya'll as we expand the Mentoring Matters initiatives, and make sure that most folks have had the opportunity to reach their dreams. And I want to thank all of ya'll for being here. Carri mentioned that there are over 900 folks here, and when they told me that yesterday, I thought that this event must have been billed as “C.P.S. Energy, Behind-the-Scenes.” [ Laughter ] Or something to draw folks here.
But really, I believe that there is tremendous energy here in San Antonio in 2010. I believe that 2010 marks the beginning of the decade of San Antonio. This is the decade that we will emerge as an economic powerhouse across the nation and across the world, a place that people are looking toward for leadership, a place that people are taking notice of, a place that is in perfect position to seize the opportunity of tomorrow. It has been my absolute privilege to serve as your mayor for the last seven months. These days have been exciting ones, they've been long ones, but they've been well worthwhile because of the work of many, many folks, a couple of which I'd like to just recognize right now.
The first is, and I'd like to ask them all to stand up, the best city council that we've had in years, our San Antonio city council, please, if you would, stand up. I see Councilwoman Cisneros, Councilwoman Taylor, Councilwoman Ramos, Councilman Cortez, Councilman Medina, Councilman Lopez, Councilman Rodriguez, Councilman Williams, Councilwoman Chan, and Councilman Clamp. Thank ya'll very much.
I was, of course, not in office for four years, and in that time we had one of the best mayors in America, Phil Hardberger, who did a wonderful job of laying out a vision and a foundation for us to build on, and I'd like to recognize him as well. Thank you very much, Mayor Hardberger, for being here.
[ Applause ]
Everybody says that we have the best city manager in America, and seven months ago I got a chance to start testing that for myself, and I got to tell you, it's the truth. Sheryl Sculley has done an absolutely wonderful job as city manager, and she's really, and I think that Phil would agree with this, she is the reason that we look so good being mayor. I hope she'll stand up and be recognized. Thank you very much, Sheryl, for your work.
[ Applause ]
I remember coming to a couple of chamber events over the last few years, and Nelson Wolff would always tell this joke about being -- I don't know whether it was him not being the old mayor anymore or the young mayor, or I guess being about the same age as Phil. These days I know that I'm the young mayor, and he's the older county judge but has been a terrific partner and collaborator and one of the reasons that our city does so well. Thank you very much, Nelson, for your leadership. I'd like to recognize you as well.
[ Applause ]
And then I want to recognize my own staff. I see many of them here from Robbie Greenblum who couldn’t be here today to Jaime Castillo, Frances Gonzalez, Jed Maebius. I see Christian Archer, Roland Garza, Sarah McLor

Behind the Scenes: Emergence (2013) Obscura and Exploratorium
Art, Design, Nature and Technology at Scale
Exploratorium, Pier 15, San Francisco
At nightfall on April 17th and 18th, Obscura Digital transforms the historic Pier 15 into a luminous portal revealing unseen dimensions of complex micro and macro phenomena. ‘Emergence’ takes visitors on a dynamic journey through a vivid array of non-computer generated, real-life visualizations that evoke a sense wonder and awe about the nature of order in our universe.
To capture these marvels of nature, Obscura designed and fabricated ten miniature replicas of the Exploratorium’s façade, some microscopic, to contain unique experiments involving fluid dynamics, microorganisms, particle interactions, living systems, crystallization, and growth in time lapse. Documented in ultra high definition video, these compelling natural subjects are projection mapped back on the surface of the building, creating the illusion of being contained within its structure.
In addition to the ‘Emergence’ exhibit, Obscura presents an interactive thermal imaging wall (in cooperation with Flir), located on the side of the Exploratorium building, where visitors can see their heat signature projected in real-time, at large-scale, with brilliant color.

Smile-Bot
Much like how the Monolith in Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" affected an entire species by introducing a new level of consciousness, We Are Matik's "Smile-Bot" was created with a similar objective in mind: to instill a sense of happiness in those around it.
Curious yet approachable by design, a willing participant inserts his or her face into one of four belly-portals where they encounter a glimpse into the home planet of the Smile-Bot. The Smile-People live in a very rigid, geometric world so the contours of a smile are very unique and cherished and are therefore collected through images and a Smile-Counter. As each participant inserts their face and smiles, one by one the each Smile-Bot face changes colors from their default sad blue to another “happier” color as well as triggering a sonic “singing-like” harmonization. If four participants smile at the same time, the Ultra-Smile Mode is achieved and triggers lights, sound effects and the appearance of a rainbow within the home planet inside the bot.
Smile-Bot was created with the intention of its objective (collecting smiles) to be achieved with little explanation which led to the design choices being made. For instance, opting for a naked-wood shell as opposed to metal was a conscious effort to make the installation more approachable. Quirky sound-effects and interactive features (a mini-smile screen), as well as the natural occurrence of looking at other people's faces from within the bot add a quirky, awkwardness that create an environment where participants can't help but smile.
Technical Notes
- A custom application was developed in Processing to interface with four cameras mounted inside the Smile-bot.
- The cameras monitors participant’s faces with Facial Recognition technology and a custom Smile Detecting algorithm.
- An array of color changing RGB LEDs react to each participant’s smile.
- Four 7-segment LED counters displays the number of smiles collected.
- A rainbow appears after four participants smile at the same time.
Physical Specifications
- 7’ (seven feet) Height
- 4’ (four feet) Width
Technical Requirements
- Power: 110v 20amps.
