Research what Electrical and Computer Engineering Can Do For You
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering provides an environment for the students to work in the areas of biomedical systems, communications systems and data networking, applied electrostatics and electromagnetics, microsystems and digital signal processing, power systems engineering, robotics and control and software engineering.
Western is one of Ontario's leading research universities with strong programs in fields such as medicine, business and engineering. Our students can benefit from interdisciplinary research giving them access to outstanding research facilities within the department and across campus such as CSTAR, Robarts Research Institute, Lawson Health Research Institute and Western Nanofabrication Facility.
The department faculty members also lead the NSERC CREATE Program in Computer-Assisted Medical Intervention (CAMI) with the focus on transdisciplinary "hands-on" clinically-motivated research.
The power systems engineering group retains two NSERC senior industrial research chairs to develop world-class power systems engineering research and graduate program.
In the department we also have Canada Research Chairs in Advanced Robotics and Control and in Wireless Communications.

Computer Engineering and the Parallel Computing Revolution --Wen-Mei Hwu
Computer Engineering and the Parallel Computing Revolution --Wen-Mei Hwu, University of Illinois at Urbana‐Champaign
Professor Wen-Mei Hwu holds the Sanders‐AMD Endowed Chair in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana‐Champaign. Modern computers are already heterogeneous parallel systems and will be more so in the near future. The computer of 2016 will have many CPU cores, many GPU cores and many accelerators. While parallel application developers are already reporting 5‐70X speedup over optimized sequential code, this speedup could scale up to over 1,000X by 2016 if we make some important changes in how we do things.
