Japan marked the 68th anniversary on Tuesday of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima with
Japan marked the 68th anniversary on Tuesday of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima with a sombre ceremony to honour the dead.
Some 50-thousand people stood for a minute s silence in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park near the epicentre of the early-morning blast on 6 August 1945 that killed up to 140-thousand people.
The bombing of Nagasaki three days later killed tens of thousands more prompting Japan s surrender to the World War II Allies.
Among those gathered at the peace park were some of the surviving victims of the atomic bombings.
There are more than 200-thousand hibakusha who have an average age of almost 79.
In a peace declaration speech Hiroshima s mayor Kazumi Matsui described the pain of those who survived only to be shunned as contaminated by the radiation.
Matsui was critical towards the Japanese government of a recent agreement on discussing nuclear energy co-operation with India that would likely hinder efforts to abolish nuclear weapons.
The Japanese government s ongoing negotiations with India on a nuclear technology agreement would probably help build a good economic relationship but would likely hinder efforts to abolish nuclear weapons Matsui said.
Meanwhile Prime Minister Shinzo Abe pledged to work towards the eradication of nuclear weapons.
I swear that I will spare no effort to make lasting peace a reality he said.
The 68th anniversary comes as Japan remains torn over restarting nuclear power plants shut down since the 2011 earthquake and tsunami damaged reactors at a the Fukushima plant causing meltdowns.
More than 100-thousand people remain displaced because of radioactivity near the plant.
Abe favours restarting plants under new safety guidelines while many Japanese oppose it.

The Japanese city of Nagasaki on Friday marked the 68th anniversary of the atomic bom
The Japanese city of Nagasaki on Friday marked the 68th anniversary of the atomic bombing at the end of World War II.
The United States dropped two atomic bombs on Japan in August 1945.
The first on Hiroshima killed 140-thousand people.
Three days later the Nagasaki bomb killed another 70-thousand.
The attacks prompted Japan to surrender.
As in past years a bell rang out in a prayer for peace.
In a peace declaration Nagasaki mayor Tomohisa Taue called on the international community to be reminded of the suffering caused by the bombings.
He also criticised Japan s government for what he said was its lack of effort in international nuclear disarmament.
He said Tokyo s refusal to sign a statement rejecting the unconditional use of nuclear weapons at an international disarmament meeting in April betrayed the expectations of the international community.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe pledged to pursue nuclear disarmament.
We have the responsibility of putting into practice a world that has no nuclear weapons he said.
Among those gathered at the memorial were some of the surviving victims of the atomic bombings.
There are more than 200-thousand hibakusha - which literally means explosion-affected people - who have an average age of almost 79.

Interview with atomic bomb survivor Tadashi Hasegawa, Part 3
Tadashi Hasegawa was a 14 year old boy when the atomic bomb exploded near his home in Hiroshima Japan on August 6, 1945. Horribly injured and on the verge of death, he and his family struggle to survive the first desperate months after the bombing. In this, the third video in a 3 part series, he describes how when there seemed to be no hope, a chance encounter with a Jesuit priest would result in his miraculous healing and set him on the path to priesthood and his life's work of speaking out against nuclear war.

Fukushima Forever: Radiation Spill Could Be 15X Worse Than Hiroshima
We are now within two months of what may be humankind's most dangerous moment since the Cuban Missile Crisis.
There is no excuse for not acting. All the resources our species can muster must be focussed on the fuel pool at Fukushima Unit 4.
Fukushima's owner, Tokyo Electric (Tepco), says that within as few as 60 days it may begin trying to remove more than 1300 spent fuel rods from a badly damaged pool perched 100 feet in the air. The pool rests on a badly damaged building that is tilting, sinking and could easily come down in the next earthquake, if not on its own.
Some 400 tons of fuel in that pool could spew out more than 15,000 times as much radiation as was released at Hiroshima.
The one thing certain about this crisis is that Tepco does not have the scientific, engineering or financial resources to handle it. Nor does the Japanese government. The situation demands a coordinated worldwide effort of the best scientists and engineers our species can muster.
Why is this so serious? (Continue reading Harvey Wasserman's full article here: http://warisacrime.org/content/crisis-fukushima-4-demands-global-take-over )
