A wish is a hope or desire for something. Fictionally, wishes can be used as plot devices. In folklore, opportunities for "making a wish" or for wishes to "come true" or "be granted" are themes that are sometimes used.
Contents |
In fiction a wish is a supernatural demand placed on the recipient's unlimited request. When it is the center of a tale, the wish is usually a template for a morality tale, "be careful what you wish for"; it can also be a small part of a tale, in which case it is often used as a plot device. You can wish on many things for example: wishing wells, dandelions when you blow the seeds, stars and much more. When you wish in a well you throw money in, in the hope your wish comes true, the money normally goes to a charity.
A template for fictional wishes could be The Book of One Thousand and One Nights, specifically the tale of Aladdin, although in the tale of Aladdin the actual wishes were only part of the tale. Also, Aladdin's demands, while outrageous, were mainly variations on wealth (which is still often taken as the most common request).
Classically the wish provider is often a spirit, Genie or similar entity, bound or constrained within a commonplace object (Aladdin's oil lamp for example) or a container closed with Solomon's seal. Releasing the entity from its constraint, usually by some simple action, allows the object's possessor to make a wish.
The subservience of the extraordinarily powerful entity to the wisher can be explained in several ways. The entity may be grateful to be free of its constraint and the wish is a thank-you gift. The entity may be bound to obedience by its prison or some other item that the wisher possesses. The entity may, by its nature, be unable to exercise its powers without an initiator.
Other wish providers are a wide variety of, more or less, inanimate objects. W.W. Jacob's Monkey's Paw is an example of this. Piers Anthony puts a spin on this idea in Castle Roogna: a magic ring claims to grant wishes and then claims credit when a wish comes true, apparently from the unaided efforts of the characters—but every wish made on the ring sooner or later comes true.[1]
Some wishes appear to be granted by nothing in particular. Snow White's mother's wish for a beautiful child might have been a coincidence,[2] but the father's wish in The Seven Ravens transforms his sons into ravens,[3] just as the mother's wish in The Raven transforms her daughter. This is common in a tale involving a person, male or female, wishing for a child, even one that is a hedgehog, or a sprig of myrtle, or no bigger than a hazel nut.
The number of wishes granted varies. Aladdin had an unlimited number in the original story, but was restricted to three wishes in the 1992 Disney film. As in the Charles Perrault tale The Ridiculous Wishes, three is the most common,[4] but others may be granted to fit the constraints of the tale. Several authors have spun variations of the wish for more wishes theme, though some disallow this as cheating.
In many stories the wording of the wish is extremely important. For example, characters often say, "I wish I was wealthy." This wording could be taken literally, the wish granted so that at one time the wisher was (used to be) wealthy but is not any more. Saying, "I wish to be wealthy", then because "to be" refers to either the present or the future, they would become wealthy.
A common problem is the granter of the wish being either extremely literal or through malice granting the request in a manner designed to cause maximum distress (such as a request for wealth being granted through inheritance/insurance on the death of a loved one). Certain authors have also tried an "always on" approach: the careless use of the word "wish" in everyday conversation having, often unpleasant, consequences.
Some cultures have customs in which people are encouraged to "make a wish", such as blowing out the candles on a birthday cake, seeing a shooting star at night, tossing a coin into a wishing well or fountain or breaking the wishbone of a cooked turkey. Many believe such wishes can only come true if they are kept a secret from other people. Others, on the other hand, believe that wishes come true only if they are told to someone else.[citation needed] Others view wish fulfillment as a bad faith self-delusion.

Avril Ramona Lavigne (pronunciation: /ˈævrɨl ləˈviːn/; AV-ril lə-VEEN; born 27 September 1984) is a Canadian singer-songwriter. She was born in Belleville, Ontario, but spent most of her youth in the small town of Napanee. By the age of 15, she had appeared on stage with Shania Twain; by 16, she had signed a two-album recording contract with Arista Records worth more than $2 million. In 2002, when she was 17 years old, Lavigne broke onto the music scene with her debut album Let Go.
Let Go made Lavigne the youngest female soloist to reach No. 1 in the UK, and the album was certified four-times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. By 2009, over 16 million copies had been sold worldwide. Her breakthrough single, "Complicated", peaked at No. 1 in many countries around the world, as did the album Let Go. Her second album, Under My Skin, was released in 2004 and was her first album to peak at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200, eventually selling more than 10 million copies worldwide. The Best Damn Thing, Lavigne’s third album, was released in 2007, becoming her third No. 1 album in the UK Albums Chart and featuring her first U.S. Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single, "Girlfriend". Lavigne has scored six number-one singles worldwide, including "Complicated", "Sk8er Boi", "I'm with You", "My Happy Ending", "Nobody's Home", and "Girlfriend". With more than 30 million copies of her albums sold worldwide, Lavigne is one of the top-selling artists releasing albums in the U.S., with over 10.25 million copies certified by the RIAA. Her fourth studio album, Goodbye Lullaby, was released in March 2011. Goodbye Lullaby gave Lavigne her fourth top 10 album on the U.S. Billboard 200 and the UK Albums Chart and her third No. 1 album in both Japan and Australia. Three months after the release of Goodbye Lullaby, Lavigne began work on her fifth album, which will be released on Epic Records following her departure from RCA Records.
Lavigne branched out from recording music, pursuing careers in feature film acting and designing clothes and perfumes. She voiced a character in the animated film, Over the Hedge, in 2006. That same year, she made her on-screen feature film debut in Fast Food Nation. In 2008, Lavigne introduced her clothing line, Abbey Dawn, and in 2009, she released her first perfume, Black Star, which was followed by her second perfume, Forbidden Rose, in 2010 and her third perfume, Wild Rose, in 2011. In July 2006, Lavigne married her boyfriend of two years, Deryck Whibley, lead singer and guitarist for Sum 41. The marriage lasted a little over three years, and in October 2009, Lavigne filed for divorce. Whibley and Lavigne continued to work together, with Whibley producing her fourth album, as well as Lavigne's single, "Alice", written for Tim Burton's film Alice in Wonderland.

Avril Ramona Lavigne was born in Belleville, Ontario. Her father, Jean-Claude Lavigne, named her "Avril" after the French word for the month of April. At the age of two, she began singing church songs with her mother,[1] Judith-Rosanne "Judy" (née Loshaw). Judy recognized her two-year-old daughter's talents after hearing her sing "Jesus Loves Me" in church.[2] Lavigne has an older brother, Matthew, and a younger sister, Michelle,[3] both of whom teased her when she sang. "My brother used to knock on the wall because I used to sing myself to sleep and he thought it was really annoying."[2]
When Lavigne was five years old, the family moved to Napanee, Ontario,[1] a town with a population of approximately 5,000.[4][5][6] Although she struggled to pay attention in school, sometimes being kicked out of class for misbehaving, her parents supported her singing. Her father bought her a microphone, a drum kit, a keyboard, and several guitars, and converted their basement into a studio. When Lavigne was 14, her parents would take her to karaoke sessions.[7] Lavigne also performed at country fairs, singing songs by Garth Brooks, The Dixie Chicks, and Shania Twain. She also began writing her own songs. Her first song was called "Can't Stop Thinking About You", about a teenage crush, which she described as "cheesy cute".[8]
“ | I’ve known all my life that this is what I was supposed to do.... Visualizing like what it would be like to be famous with my music. And always just dreaming, always daydreaming. | ” |
—Avril Lavigne, NBC News[7] |
In 1999,[9] Lavigne won a radio contest to perform with fellow Canadian singer Shania Twain at the Corel Centre (now Scotiabank Place) in Ottawa, before an audience of 20,000 people.[1][4] Twain and Lavigne sang "What Made You Say That",[1] and Lavigne told Twain that she was going to be "a famous singer".[4] During a performance with the Lennox Community Theatre, Lavigne was spotted by local folksinger Stephen Medd. He invited her to contribute vocals on his song, "Touch the Sky", for his 1999 album, Quinte Spirit. She later sang on "Temple of Life" and "Two Rivers" for his follow-up album, My Window to You, in 2000. In December 1999, Lavigne was discovered by her first professional manager, Cliff Fabri, while singing country covers at a Chapters bookstore in Kingston, Ontario.[1][4] Fabri sent out VHS tapes of Lavigne's home performances to several industry prospects, and Lavigne was visited by several executives.[10] Mark Jowett, co-founder of the Canadian management firm Nettwerk, received a copy of Lavigne's karaoke performances recorded in her parents' basement.[11] Jowett arranged for Lavigne to work with Peter Zizzo during the summer of 2000 in New York, where she wrote the song "Why". Lavigne was noticed by Arista Records on a subsequent trip to New York.[10]
Lavigne would go on to sell more than 30 million copies of her albums worldwide,[12] becoming one of the top-selling artists releasing albums in the U.S., with over 10.25 million copies certified by the RIAA.[13] In 2009, Billboard named Lavigne the No. 10 pop artist in the "Best of the 2000s" chart.[14] She was listed as the 28th overall best act of the decade based on album and single chart performance in the U.S.[15]
In November 2000,[5] Ken Krongard, an A&R representative, invited Antonio "L.A." Reid, then head of Arista Records, to producer Peter Zizzo's Manhattan studio to hear Lavigne sing. Her 15-minute audition "so impressed" Reid that he immediately signed her to Arista with a deal worth $1.25 million for two albums and an extra $900,000 for a publishing advance.[6][1] By this time, Lavigne had found that she fit in naturally with her hometown high school's skater clique, an image that carried through to her first album, but although she enjoyed skateboarding, school left her feeling insecure. Armed with a record deal, she dropped out to focus on her music career,[5] but she still had to inform her parents of her decision. "I wasn't going to turn [the record deal] down. It's been my dream all my life. They knew how much I wanted this and how much I've put into it."[16][8]
Reid gave A&R Joshua Sarubin the responsibility for overseeing Lavigne's development and the recording of her debut album.[17] They spent several months in New York working with different co-writers trying to forge an individual sound for her. Sarubin told HitQuarters that for while they struggled finding her sound and although early collaborations with songwriter-producers including Sabelle Breer, Curt Frasca and Peter Zizzo resulted in some good songs, they didn't match her and her voice.[17] It was only when Lavigne then went to Los Angeles in May 2001 and created two songs with The Matrix production team – including "Complicated" – that the record company felt she had made a major breakthrough.[17] Lavigne then worked further with The Matrix and also with singer-songwriter Cliff Magness. Recording finished in January 2002.[17]
Lavigne released her debut album, Let Go, on 4 June 2002 in the U.S., where it reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200. It peaked at No. 1 on the Australian, Canadian, and UK charts. This made Lavigne, at 17 years old, the youngest female soloist to have a No. 1 album in the UK until that time.[18] By the end of 2002, the album was certified four-times platinum by the RIAA, making her the bestselling female artist of 2002 and Let Go the top-selling debut of the year.[19] By May 2003, Let Go had accumulated over 1,000,000 sales in Canada, receiving a diamond certification from the Canadian Recording Industry Association.[20] As of 2009, the album has sold over 16 million units worldwide,[21] and the RIAA has certified the album six-times platinum, denoting shipments of over six million units in the U.S.[22]
“ | I don't get overwhelmed, just because I feel like I've kind of prepared myself for it. All my life this is what I've wanted, what I've dreamed about, and I knew this would happen. I've been singing ever since I was really young and I've wanted this so bad, and I told myself I would do it. | ” |
—Avril Lavigne on her success, MTV[5] |
Lavigne's debut single and the album's lead single, "Complicated", peaked at No. 1 in Australia and No. 2 in the U.S. "Complicated" was one of the bestselling Canadian singles of 2002, and it was also featured on the teen television show, Dawson's Creek. "Complicated" later ranked on the Hot 100 Singles of the Decade list at No. 83.[23]
Subsequent singles, "Sk8er Boi" and "I'm With You" reached the top ten in the U.S.[24] Thanks to the success of her first three singles, Lavigne was the second artist in history to have three No. 1 songs from a debut album on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40.[25] For the music video to "Complicated", Lavigne was named Best New Artist at the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards.[26] She won four Juno Awards in 2003 out of six nominations,[27] received a World Music Award for "World's Bestselling Canadian Singer", and was nominated for eight Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist and Song of the Year for "Complicated" (2003).[28]
In 2002, Lavigne made a cameo appearance in the music video to "Hundred Million" by the pop punk band Treble Charger.[29] In March 2003, Lavigne posed for the cover of Rolling Stone magazine[30] and, later in May,[31] performed "Fuel" during MTV's Icon tribute to Metallica.[32] During her first headlining tour, the Try To Shut Me Up Tour, Lavigne covered Green Day's "Basket Case".[33]
Lavigne was featured in the 2003 game, The Sims: Superstar, as a non-playable celebrity.[34]
Lavigne co-wrote "Breakaway" with Matthew Gerard, which was recorded by Kelly Clarkson for the soundtrack to the 2004 film The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.[35] "Breakaway" would later be included on Clarkson's second album and released as the album's lead single. Lavigne covered the Goo Goo Dolls song "Iris", performed with the band's lead singer John Rzeznik at Fashion Rocks,[36] and she posed for the cover of Maxim in October 2004.[37] She also recorded the theme song for The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. "I made the song a little more edgy", Lavigne said. "There are a lot of loud guitars, and we picked the tempo up a little and sang it with a little more attitude." Lavigne rearranged the song with the help of producer Butch Walker.[38]
Lavigne's second studio album, Under My Skin, was released on 25 May 2004, debuting at No. 1 in several countries, including Australia, Mexico, Canada, Japan, the UK, and the U.S.[39] The album has sold more than 10 million copies. Lavigne wrote most of the album's tracks with Canadian singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk. Kreviazuk's husband, Our Lady Peace front man Raine Maida, co-produced the album, along with Butch Walker and Don Gilmore. Lavigne went on the Live and By Surprise twenty-one-city mall tour in the US and Canada to promote the album, accompanied by her guitarist, Evan Taubenfeld. Each performance consisted of a short live acoustic set of songs from the new album. At the end of 2004, Lavigne embarked on her first world tour, the Bonez Tour, which had stopovers in almost every continent and lasted for the entire 2005 year.
“ | This record definitely proves that I'm a writer and people can't knock that, because each song comes from a personal experience of mine, and there are so much emotions in those songs. | ” |
—Avril Lavigne, The Ledger[40] |
"Don't Tell Me", the lead single of the album, went to No. 1 in Argentina and Mexico and reached the top five in the UK and Canada and the top ten in Australia and Brazil. "My Happy Ending", the album's second single, went to No. 1 in Mexico and the top five in the UK and Australia. In the US, it reached the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 and went to No. 1 in the Mainstream Top 40, making it her fourth-biggest hit there. The third single, "Nobody's Home", did not make the top 40 in the US, reaching No. 1 only in Mexico and Argentina. The fourth single from the album, "He Wasn't", reached top 40 positions in the UK and Australia and was not released in the U.S.[41]
Lavigne won two World Music Awards in 2004 for "World's Best Pop/Rock Artist" and "World's Bestselling Canadian Artist". She received five Juno Award nominations in 2005, and picked up three, including "Artist of the Year". She won the award for "Favorite Female Singer" at the eighteenth annual Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards[42] and was nominated in every MTV Award show shown around the world.
On 26 February 2006, Lavigne represented Canada at the closing ceremony of the Torino Olympics, performing her song "Who Knows" during the eight minute Vancouver 2010 portion.[43]
While Lavigne was in the studio for her third studio album, Fox Entertainment Group approached her to write a song for the soundtrack to the 2006 fantasy-adventure film Eragon. She wrote and recorded two "ballad-type" songs, but only one, "Keep Holding On", was used for the film.[44] Lavigne admitted that writing the song was challenging, making sure it flowed with the film. She emphasized that "Keep Holding On", which later appeared on the album, was not indicative of what the next album would be like.[45][46]
Lavigne's third album, The Best Damn Thing, was released on 17 April 2007, which Lavigne immediately promoted with a small tour. Its lead single, "Girlfriend", topped the Billboard Hot 100 the same week The Best Damn Thing debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. "Girlfriend" was Lavigne's first single to reach this No. 1 position.[47] The single was a worldwide hit; it also peaked at No. 1 in Australia, Canada, Japan, and Italy and reached No. 2 in the UK and France. "Girlfriend" was recorded in Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, German, Japanese, and Mandarin. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry ranked "Girlfriend" as the most-downloaded track worldwide in 2007, selling 7.3 million copies, including the versions recorded in eight different languages.[48][12] "Girlfriend" ranked on the Hot 100 Singles of the Decade list at No. 94.[49]
"When You're Gone", the second single, went to No. 3 in the UK, the top five in Australia and Italy, the top ten in Canada, and was close to reaching the top twenty in the U.S. In December 2007, Lavigne, with annual earnings of $12 million, was ranked number eight in the Forbes "Top 20 Earners Under 25".[50] "Hot" was the third single and has been Lavigne's least successful single in the U.S., charting only at No. 95. In Canada, "Hot" made the top ten, and in Australia, the top 20. The Best Damn Thing has sold over 6 million copies worldwide.
During this era, Lavigne won nearly every award she was nominated for, including two World Music Awards for "World's Bestselling Canadian Artist" and "World's Best Pop/Rock Female Artist". She took her first two MTV Europe Music Awards, received one Teen Choice Awards for "Summer Single", and was nominated for five Juno awards.
In mid-2007, Lavigne was featured in a two-volume graphic novel, Avril Lavigne's Make 5 Wishes. She collaborated with artist Camilla D’Errico and writer Joshua Dysart on the manga, which was about a shy girl named Hana who, upon meeting her hero Avril Lavigne, learned to overcome her fears. Lavigne said, "I know that many of my fans read manga, and I'm really excited to be involved in creating stories that I know they will enjoy." The volumes were released on 10 April (one week prior to the release of The Best Damn Thing) and in July, respectively. The publication Young Adult Library Services nominated the series for "Great Graphic Novels for Teens".[51]
In March 2008, Lavigne undertook a world tour named The Best Damn Tour to support the album. In that same month, she also appeared on the cover of Maxim for the second time of her career.[52] In mid-August, Malaysia's Islamic opposition party, the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, attempted to ban Lavigne's show in Kuala Lumpur, judging her stage moves "too sexy". Her concert on 29 August was considered as promoting wrong values ahead of Malaysia's independence day on 31 August.[53] On 21 August 2008, MTV reported that the concert had been approved by the Malaysian government.[54]
Only a month after completing The Best Damn Tour, Lavigne began recording in her home studio in November 2008 with the song "Black Star",[55] written to help promote her first fragrance of the same name.[56] By July 2009, nine tracks had been recorded for the new album,[55] including the songs "Fine", "Everybody Hurts" and "Darlin". Several of the tracks were written in Lavigne's youth. "Darlin" was the second song Lavigne wrote as a 15-year-old while living in Napanee, Ontario. Lavigne described the album as being about "life". She stated, "It's so easy for me to do a boy-bashing pop song, but to sit down and write honestly about something that's really close to me, something I've been through, it's a totally different thing."[56] With the exception of the album's lead single, "What the Hell", Lavigne described the songs on the album as different from her earlier material: "I'm older now, so I think that comes across in my music, it's not as pop-rock".[57]
In January 2010, while simultaneously writing and recording for her new album, Lavigne worked with Disney clothing designs inspired by Tim Burton's feature film, Alice in Wonderland. She asked the executives if she could write a song for the film. The result was the song "Alice",[58] which was played over the end credits[59] and included on the soundtrack, Almost Alice.[60]
On 28 February, Lavigne gave a performance at the concert portion of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics closing ceremony, performing "My Happy Ending" and "Girlfriend".[61] Lavigne was honoured to perform at the ceremonies, but she regretted not being able to attend the U.S. vs. Canada hockey match. "They had us on lockdown. We weren't allowed to leave our trailers, for security purposes."[62]
In September 2010, Lavigne's third single from her debut album, "I'm With You", was sampled by Rihanna on the track "Cheers (Drink to That)", which is featured on Rihanna's fifth studio album, Loud.[63][64] In August 2011, she was featured in the music video for Cheers (Drink To That). "It's exciting to me because that was always one of my favorite songs, and for it to come out 10 years ago and so now to have it sampled and back out on the radio is pretty dope".[65] In December 2010, American singer Miranda Cosgrove released "Dancing Crazy", a song written by Lavigne, Max Martin and Shellback. It was also produced by Martin.[66] On 23 September 2011, Lavigne appeared in the Hub network show Majors & Minors as a guest mentor, alongside other singers including Adam Lambert and Leona Lewis. About the show, Lavigne stated, "I sang for them, and they performed for me. I was just blown away. I got to talk to them about music and the music industry, and they were all just so excited".[65]
The release dates for Goodbye Lullaby and its lead single were pushed back several times. In response to these delays, Lavigne said, "I write my own music and, therefore, it takes me longer to put out records 'cause I have to live my life to get inspiration",[67] and that she had enough material for two records.[67] In November, Lavigne was featured in Maxim, where she revealed that Goodbye Lullaby took two and a half years to complete,[68] but she cited her record company as the reason for the album's delays, stating that the album had been completed for a year.[69] Goodbye Lullaby was released on 8 March.[70][57] The lead single, "What the Hell", premiered on Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve on 31 December.[70]
Three months after the release of Goodbye Lullaby, Lavigne announced that work on her fifth studio album had already begun, with eight songs written so far. The new album will musically be the opposite of Goodbye Lullaby, with a release date rumored for sometime in 2012. [71] Lavigne explained, "[Goodbye Lullaby] was more mellow, [but] the next one will be pop and more fun again. I already have a song that I know is going to be a single, I just need to re-record it!"[72][73][74] Later, in July 2011, Lavigne revealed the title of two of the songs from her fifth album as "Fine" and "Gone". The tracks were originally recorded for Goodbye Lullaby but never made the final cut. In late 2011, Lavigne confirmed that she had moved to Epic Records, which is now headed by L.A. Reid.[75][76]
Production-wise, Lavigne stated in an interview with Virgin Radio 96 that she would begin production on the album in January 2012. [65] During recording, she has been confirmed to have worked with the hip hop production duo The Runners, [77] Chad Kroeger of rock band Nickelback and former member of rock band Evanescence David Hodges. [78] In April 2012, Lavigne confirmed that she had "finally" finished work on her fifth album and that she would be taking a short hiatus before releasing it and embarking on "[her] next artistic journey".[citation needed]
Themes in Lavigne's music include messages of self-empowerment from a female or an adolescent view.[79] Lavigne believes her "songs are about being yourself no matter what and going after your dreams even if your dreams are crazy and even if people tell you they're never going to come true."[80] On her debut album, Let Go, Lavigne preferred the less mainstream songs, such as "Losing Grip", instead of her more radio-friendly singles, such as "Complicated", saying that "the songs I did with the Matrix... were good for my first record, but I don't want to be that pop anymore."[81] Lavigne's second album, Under My Skin, had deeper personal themes underlying each song. Lavigne explained, "I've gone through so much, so that's what I talk about.... Like boys, like dating or relationships".[82] In contrast, her third album, The Best Damn Thing, was not personal to her. "Some of the songs I wrote didn't even mean that much to me. It's not like some personal thing I'm going through."[83] Her objective in writing the album was simply to "make it fun".[84] Goodbye Lullaby, Lavigne's fourth album, was much more personal than her earlier records,[55] with Lavigne describing the album as "more stripped down, deeper. All the songs are very emotional".[85] Ian McKellen defined her as “... a punk chanteuse, a post-grunge valkyrie, with the wounded soul of a poet and the explosive pugnacity of a Canadian.” on the Craig Ferguson show in 2007. [86][87]
Growing up, Lavigne listened to Blink-182, Goo Goo Dolls, Matchbox Twenty and Shania Twain,[81] and her influences include Courtney Love and Janis Joplin.[82] Because of these influences, musical genres, and her personal style, the media often defined her as punk, something she denied being. Lavigne’s close friend and guitarist, Evan Taubenfeld, said, "It's a very touchy subject to a lot of people, but the point is that Avril isn't punk, but she never really pretended to claim to come from that scene. She had pop punk music and the media ended up doing the rest".[88] Lavigne also commented on the matter: "I have been labeled like I'm this angry girl, [a] rebel... punk, and I am so not any of them."[40]
“ | I know my fans look up to me and that's why I make my songs so personal; it's all about things I've experienced and things I like or hate. I write for myself and hope that my fans like what I have to say. | ” |
—Avril Lavigne, Girl.com.au[80] |
Most of critics identify Lavigne as some form between teen pop and pop-punk: Publications such as The New York Times, Rolling Stone, NME, MusicMight, IGN and Popmatters have identified Avril Lavigne as a mix of rock, teen pop and pop-punk,[89][90][91][92][93][94] influenced by a grungey pop-rock sound.[95][96][97][98][99]
While Lavigne denied being angry, her interviews were still passionate about the media's lack of respect for her songwriting. "I am a writer, and I won't accept people trying to take that away from me", adding that she had been writing "full-structured songs" since she was 14.[40] Despite this, Lavigne’s songwriting has been questioned throughout her career. The songwriting trio, the Matrix, with whom Lavigne wrote songs for her debut album, claimed that they were the main songwriters of Lavigne’s singles, "Complicated", "Sk8er Boi" and "I'm with You". Lavigne denied this, asserting that she was the primary songwriter for every song on the album. "[N]one of those songs aren't from me".[81] In 2007, Chantal Kreviazuk, who wrote with Lavigne on her second album, accused Lavigne of plagiarism[100] and criticized her songwriting. "Avril doesn't really sit and write songs by herself or anything".[101] Lavigne also disclaimed this, and considered taking legal action against Kreviazuk for "clear defamation" against her character.[101] Kreviazuk later apologized: "Avril is an accomplished songwriter and it has been my privilege to work with her".[100] Shortly after that, Tommy Dunbar, founder of the 1970s band, the Rubinoos, sued Lavigne, her publishing company, and Lukasz "Dr. Luke" Gottwald for allegedly stealing parts of "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" for her song "Girlfriend".[102] Gottwald defended Lavigne, stating, "me and Avril wrote the song together…. It has the same chord progressions as ten different Blink-182 songs, the standard changes you'd find in a Sum 41 song. It's the Sex Pistols, not the Rubinoos."[101] In January 2008, the lawsuit was closed after a confidential settlement had been reached.[103]
Lavigne became interested in appearing on television and in feature films. The decision, she said, was her own. Although her years of experience in making music videos would be to her advantage, Lavigne admitted her experience in singing removed any fear of performing on camera. She specifically mentioned that the video "Nobody's Home" involved the most "acting".[80] Her first television appearance was in a 2002 episode of Sabrina, the Teenage Witch,[104] performing "Sk8er Boi"[105] with her band in a nightclub.[106] She later made a cameo appearance in the 2004 film Going the Distance. The main characters bump into her backstage at the MuchMusic Video Awards[107] after her performance of "Losing Grip".[108]
She moved into feature film acting cautiously, choosing deliberately small roles to begin with. In November 2005, after going through an audition to land the role, Lavigne travelled to New Mexico[109] to film a single scene in the 2007 film, The Flock.[110] She starred as Beatrice Bell, the girlfriend of a crime suspect, appearing alongside Claire Danes and Richard Gere. Gere gave Lavigne acting tips between takes.[110] On her role in The Flock, Lavigne said, "I did that just to see how it was and to not jump into [mainstream acting] too fast".[80] The Flock would not be released in American theatres, and because it would not be released in foreign markets until late 2007, it would not be considered Lavigne's debut. The film made $7 million in the foreign box office.[111]
Lavigne's feature film debut was voicing an animated character in the 2006 film Over the Hedge, based on the comic strip of the same name. She voiced the character Heather, a Virginia Opossum. Recording the characters' voices was devoid of interaction with other actors. Lavigne stated, "All the actors went in individually, and [director] Tim and [screenwriter Karey] and directors were there with me every time I went in, and they made it go so smoothly; they made me feel comfortable.... That was the interesting part, going in by yourself, with no one else to kind of feed off of."[112] Lavigne found the recording process to be "easy" and "natural", but she kept hitting the microphone as she gestured while acting. "I'd use my hands constantly and, like, hit the microphone stand and make noises, so Tim and Karey had to tell me to hold still.... It's hard to be running or falling down the stairs and have to make those sounds come out of your mouth but keep your body still." Lavigne believed she was hired to perform Heather because of her rock-star status. "[The director] thought I'd give my character... a bit of attitude".[80] The film opened on 19 May 2006, making $38 million over its opening weekend. It went on to gross $336 million worldwide.[113]
In December 2005, Lavigne signed on to appear in Fast Food Nation, based on the book Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal.[114] The fictionalized adaptation, directed by Richard Linklater, traces fast-food hamburgers contaminated with cow feces back to the slaughterhouses.[115] Lavigne starred in her on-screen acting debut[116] as a high school student intent on freeing the cows.[117] The film opened on 17 November 2006 and remained in theatres for 11 weeks, grossing $2 million worldwide.[118]
Both Over the Hedge and Fast Food Nation opened at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, which Lavigne attended. Lavigne felt honoured to be able to attend and was proud of her work. When asked if she would pursue her film career, she stated that she wanted to take her time and wait for the "right parts and the right movies." Lavigne was aware of the roles she had chosen. "I wanted to start off small and to learn [that] I wouldn't just want to throw myself into a big part."[80] In August 2006, Canadian Business magazine ranked her as the seventh top Canadian actor in Hollywood in their second-annual ranking Celebrity Power List. The results were determined by comparing salary, Internet hits, TV mentions, and press hits.[119]
In July 2008, Lavigne launched the clothing line Abbey Dawn, featuring a back-to-school collection.[12] It is produced by Kohl's, which is the brand's exclusive U.S. retailer. Named after Lavigne's childhood nickname, Abbey Dawn is designed by Lavigne herself.[120][121] Kohl's describes Abbey Dawn as a "juniors lifestyle brand",[12] which incorporates skull, zebra, and star patterns, purples and "hot pinks and blacks". Lavigne, who wore some of the clothes and jewellery from her line at various concerts before its official launch, pointed out that she was not merely licensing her name to the collection. "I actually am the designer. What's really important to me is that everything fits well and is well-made, so I try everything on and approve it all."[122] The clothing line incorporates Lavigne's musical style and lyrics, "after the release of my first album, I realized how much fashion was involved in my musical career".[65]
“ | I just love clothes and colors and patterns. I'm very visual and very hands-on. | ” |
The designs were also featured on the Internet game Stardoll, where figures can be dressed up as Avril Lavigne.[124] On 14 September 2009, Lavigne took her then latest collection for her clothing line to be a part of the New York Fashion Week,[125] returning in 2011.[65] In December 2010, the clothing line was made available to over 50 countries through the line's official website.[126][85] "It's fun to be a chick and design clothes and things I'd like for myself. I design things I [can't] find."[62] At the end of 2008, Lavigne signed a contract with Canon Canada to appear in advertising campaigns and commercials to promote the latest line of cameras and a full range of other accessories.[127]
Lavigne released her first fragrance, Black Star, created by Procter & Gamble Prestige Products. The fragrance was announced on Lavigne's official website on 7 March 2009. Black Star, which features notes of pink hibiscus, black plum and dark chocolate, was released in summer 2009 in Europe, and later in the US and Canada.[128] When asked what the name meant, Lavigne replied, "I wanted [the bottle] to be a star, and my colors are pink and black, and Black Star resembles being different, and standing out in the crowd, and reaching for the stars; the whole message is just about following your dreams, and it's okay to be unique and be who you are."[129] Black Star won the 2010 Best "Women's Scent Mass" by Cosmetic Executive Women (CEW).[130] Black Star was followed by a second fragrance in July 2010,[131] Forbidden Rose, which took two years to develop.[132] It features notes of red apple, winepeach, black pepper, lotusflower, heliotrope, shellflower, praline agreement, sandalwood, and vanilla.[131] Its message is an extension of Black Star's "follow your dreams",[133] though the tagline for the new perfume is "Dare to Discover".[134] The commercial takes place in a gothic garden setting,[133] where Lavigne, upon entering the garden, finds a single, purple rose.[134] Lavigne launched a third fragrance, Wild Rose, in August 2011 and filmed the commercial for it in late 2010.[85] The tagline for the fragrance is "Dare to discover more".[135] It features notes of mandarin, pink grapefruit, plum, orange blossom, frangipani, blue orchid, musk, sandalwood and crème brûlée.[136]
In January 2010, Lavigne began working with Disney to incorporate Alice in Wonderland-inspired designs into her Abbey Dawn line of clothing.[58] Her designs were exhibited at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in California beginning in May through September, alongside Colleen Atwood's costumes from the 2010 film.[137]
Lavigne has been involved with many charities, including Make Some Noise, Amnesty International, Erase MS, AmericanCPR.org, Camp Will-a-Way, Music Clearing Minefields, U.S. Campaign for Burma, Make-a-Wish Foundation and War Child. She has also appeared in ALDO ads with YouthAIDS to raise money to educate people worldwide about HIV/AIDS. Lavigne took part in the Unite Against AIDS concert presented by ALDO in support of Unicef on 28 November 2007 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.[138] In November 2010, Lavigne attended the Clinton Global Initiative.[139]
Lavigne worked with Reverb, a non-profit environmental organization, for her 2005 east coast tour.[140] She covered "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" for War Child's Peace Songs compilation, and she recorded a cover of the John Lennon song "Imagine" as her contribution to the compilation album Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur. Released on 12 June 2007, the album was produced to benefit Amnesty International's campaign to alleviate the crisis in Darfur.[141]
On 5 December 2009, Lavigne returned to the stage in Mexico City during the biggest charity event in Latin America, "Teleton". She performed acoustic versions of her hits "Complicated" and "Girlfriend" with Evan Taubenfeld and band member, Jim McGorman.[142] In 2010, Lavigne was one of several artists who contributed their voices to a cover of K'naan's "Wavin' Flag" as a benefit single to help raise money for several charity organizations related to the 2010 Haiti earthquake.[143]
On 14 September 2010, Lavigne introduced her charity, "The Avril Lavigne Foundation". The next day, the foundation's official website was launched. The foundation aims to help young people with serious illnesses and disabilities[139][144] and works with leading charitable organizations;[126] The foundation partners with the Easter Seals, Make-A-Wish foundation and Erase MS,[145] the latter two being charities Lavigne has previously worked with. Her work with the Make-A-Wish foundation was the inspiration behind her own charity, with Lavigne stating, "I just really wanted to do more".[144] Lavigne said on the foundation's website, "I have always looked for ways to give back because I think it’s a responsibility we all share".[146] Philanthropist Trevor Neilson's 12-person firm, "Global Philanthropy Group", advises Lavigne with her foundation as well as several other celebrities, including musician John Legend.[139]
“ | I have to fight to keep my image really me.... I rejected some gorgeous publicity shots because they just didn't look like me. I won't wear skanky clothes that show my booty, my belly or my boobs. I have a great body. | ” |
—Avril Lavigne, MTV[5] |
When Lavigne first gained publicity, she was known for her tomboyish style,[147] in particular her necktie-and-tank-top combinations.[148][149] She preferred baggy clothes, skater shoes or Converses,[62] wristbands, and sometimes shoelaces wrapped around her fingers.[7] During photo shoots, instead of wearing "glittery get-ups", she preferred wearing "old, crumpled T's".[5] In response to her fashion and musical influences, the media would call her the "pop punk princess".[150][151] Press and fans regarded her as the "anti-Britney", in part because of her less commercial and "real" image, but also because she was noticeably headstrong. "I’m not made up and I’m not being told what to say and how to act, so they have to call me the anti-Britney, which I’m not."[7] By November 2002, however, Lavigne stopped wearing ties, claiming she felt she was "wearing a costume".[6] Lavigne made a conscious effort to keep her music, and not her image, at the forefront of her career. "I'm just saying, I don't want to sell sex. I feel that's sort of lame and low. I've got so much more to say."[152]
Lavigne eventually took on a more gothic style as she began her second album, Under My Skin, trading her skating outfits for black tutus[151] and earning an image marked by angst.[153] During The Best Damn Thing years, Lavigne changed directions. She dyed her hair blonde with a pink streak, wore feminine outfits,[154] including "tight jeans and heels",[62] and modelled for magazines such as Harper's Bazaar.[147] Lavigne defended her new style: "I don't really regret anything. You know, the ties and the wife-beaters and all... It had its time and place. And now I'm all grown up, and I've moved on".[154] She now tries to eat healthy foods and practises yoga, soccer, surfing, rollerblading, and street hockey.[62]
Only a few of Lavigne's tattoos are unique to her; the rest are matched with those of her friends.[62] Lavigne had a star tattooed on the inside of her left wrist that was created at the same time as friend and musical associate Ben Moody's identical tattoo.[155] In late 2004, she had a small pink heart around the letter "D" applied to her right wrist, which represented her then-boyfriend, Deryck Whibley.[62][156] Lavigne and then-husband Whibley got matching tattoos in March 2010, in celebration of his 30th birthday.[62] In April, Lavigne added another tattoo on her wrist: that of a lightning bolt and the number 30.[157]
“ | Everything is always spur-of-the-moment. All of my tattoos, I decide that second and do it. | ” |
—Avril Lavigne, Inked[62] |
Her love of tattoos, however, gained media attention in May 2010, after Lavigne and Jenner each got matching tattoos of the word "fuck" on their ribs.[158][159] Lavigne appeared in the June/July cover story for Inked magazine, where she discussed and showed off her tattoos, including an "Abbey Dawn" on her left forearm and an "XXV" and star on her right. Although she confirmed the "fuck" tattoo verbally in the article (calling it her "favorite word"[62]) she had it applied after the magazine's photo shoot.[160] She added that she eventually wanted to get a "big-ass heart with a flag through it with a name.... I'm going to wait a few years and make sure I still want it then. I have to wait for that special someone to come back into my life."[62] In July 2010, Lavigne had her boyfriend's name, "Brody", tattooed beneath her right breast.[161]
Lavigne and Deryck Whibley, lead singer and guitarist for the band Sum 41, began dating when she was 19 years old, after being friends since she was 17.[162] Only a few weeks before they met, Lavigne admitted that she was not meeting boys because her bodyguards were frightening them away. In June 2005, Whibley surprised Lavigne with a trip to Venice, including a gondola ride and a romantic picnic, and on 27 June, he proposed to her.[163]
She at first wanted to have a "rock n' roll, goth wedding", but she admitted to having doubts about going against tradition. "I've been dreaming about my wedding day since I was a little girl. I have to wear the white dress.... People thought that I would [wear a] black wedding dress, and I would have. But at the same time, I was thinking about the wedding pictures, and I wanted to be in style. I didn't want to be thinking, 20 years later, 'Oh, why did I wear my hair like that?'"[164]
The wedding was held on 15 July 2006. About 110 guests attended the wedding, which was held at a private estate in Montecito, California.[165] Lavigne, wearing a gown designed by Vera Wang walked down the aisle with her father, Jean-Claude, to Mendelssohn's "Wedding March". Lavigne chose a colour theme of red and white, including red rose petals and centrepieces of distinctly coloured flowers. The wedding included cocktails for an hour before the reception and a sit-down dinner. The song "Iris", by the Goo Goo Dolls, was played during Lavigne and Whibley's first dance.[166]
Seven months into their marriage, Lavigne stated that she was "the best thing that's ever happened to him", and suggested that she helped Whibley stay off drugs since they had begun dating. "He doesn't do drugs. Clearly, he used to, because he talked about it, but I wouldn't be with someone who did, and I made that very clear to him when we first started dating. I've never done cocaine in my life, and I'm proud of that. I am 100 percent against drugs."[164] The marriage lasted a little more than three years. It was announced on 17 September 2009 that Lavigne and Whibley had split up and that divorce papers would soon follow.[167] On 9 October 2009, Lavigne filed for divorce, releasing the statement, "I am grateful for our time together, and I am grateful and blessed for our remaining friendship."[162] The divorce was finalized on 16 November 2010, officially ending the marriage.[168]

Cher Lloyd (born 28 July 1993) is an English recording artist. Lloyd rose to fame when she finished fourth in the seventh series of The X Factor. Shortly afterwards, Lloyd was signed by Simon Cowell to Sony Music subsidiary Syco Music.
Cher Lloyd's debut single "Swagger Jagger" was released in June 2011. Despite receiving negative reviews, the single entered at number one on the UK Singles Chart and number two on the Irish Singles Chart. Her second single "With Ur Love" was released on 31 October, featuring Mike Posner, and peaked at number four in the UK, and number five in Ireland, preceding her debut album Sticks + Stones, which peaked at number four in the UK Albums Chart and number seven on the Irish Albums Chart.[1]

Cher Lloyd used to live in Malvern with her parents Darren and Dina, and three younger siblings brother Josh, and sisters Sophie and Rosie. Lloyd attended Dyson Perrins CE Sports College, where she studied performing arts.[2] She also attended theatre arts school Stagecoach.
Lloyd had previously auditioned for The X Factor twice before (when the minimum age was lower) singing ballads, but did not make it through.[3] Lloyd has previously performed at holiday camps and said she gets a mixed reaction to her music, but was a big hit with x-factor judge at the time Cheryl Cole. She remarked on their similarity and Cheryl went on to support her throughout the show.[4] She auditioned singing the Keri Hilson version of "Turn My Swag On".[4] At bootcamp she sang a rap version of "Viva La Vida"[5] adding lyrics she claimed to have written herself, but this was disputed and reports claimed she took them from a song by rapper Swizz Beatz.[6][7] At the judges' houses she performed "Cooler Than Me"[8] but suffered from tonsillitis and was unable to complete her song.[9] She was given a second chance, but broke down sobbing and could not complete the song. Despite this, she was still picked as one of the final three girls by mentor Cheryl Cole.
Lloyd sang a rendition of "Just Be Good to Me" in the first of the live shows. In the second live show she sang "Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)". In the third live show, she sang a mashup of "No Diggity" and "Shout", and in the fourth live show she sang "Stay". This was the first time Lloyd did not rap in her performance, and Cowell even called it "the performance of the season". In week five, Lloyd sang "Empire State of Mind", but judges stated that after last week they were disappointed, and Cowell said it was copycat. However, the judges agreed that she redeemed herself with her rendition of "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word" mixed with "Mockingbird", by Elton John and Eminem respectively, in week 6. In the seventh week, Lloyd was in the bottom two for the first time after her rendition of "Imagine", but Cowell, Cole and Walsh all saved her in the final showdown, resulting in Paije Richardson being eliminated. In the following week Lloyd performed "Girlfriend", followed by "Walk This Way". Both performances were credited by the judges and she was saved by the public vote the following night, securing her position in the semi final.[10] In the semi-final, Lloyd performed "Nothin' on You" and "Love the Way You Lie" and was in the bottom two with Mary Byrne. She was saved by the judges again and put through to the final, even though voting statistics after the show revealed that Lloyd had the fewest votes.[11] In the final she performed a mash-up of "The Clapping Song" and "Get Ur Freak On", followed by a duet with will.i.am, which was a mashup of "Where Is the Love?" and "I Gotta Feeling". Lloyd was then eliminated in fourth place, having received the fewest public votes.[12]
After the final it was announced that Lloyd had been signed by Syco Music.[14] Lloyd and nine other contestants from the series participated in the X Factor Live Tour from February 2011 to April 2011. The tour saw Lloyd performing for 500,000 people throughout the UK.[15] Songwriter Autumn Rowe[16] and producer RedOne[17] worked on her debut album, scheduled for release in November 2011.[18] Her debut single, "Swagger Jagger", received its first airplay on 20 June 2011 after it had been leaked onto the internet on 15 June 2011[19] however, this version was later confirmed as only the demo of the track on Lloyd's Twitter account.[20] The single was released on 31 July 2011[21] and peaked at number one on the UK Singles Chart on 7 August 2011.
On 28 July 2011, Lloyd previewed five tracks from her upcoming album during a Ustream session, including tracks featuring Busta Rhymes, Mike Posner, Ghetts, Mic Righteous and Dot Rotten.[22] Lloyd confirmed on Twitter that "With Ur Love" featuring Mike Posner was to be released has her second single. The single was released on 30 October 2011. The single received its first radio airplay on 21 September 2011. The music video premiered on 1 October 2011, on morning show T4. The single sold 74,030 copies in its first week becoming the highest-selling number four single since Rihanna's "Only Girl (In the World)", which sold 74,248 copies in October 2010.[23] Lloyd confirmed the album's title "Sticks + Stones" on her twitter. The album was released on 7 November 2011.[24] The album peaked at number four and has sold 198,199 copies in the United Kingdom as of January 2012.[25]
On 21 November 2011, Lloyd announced her debut headlining UK tour, the Sticks + Stones Tour, set for March and April 2012.[26] In December 2011, two more dates were added due to popular demand for tickets.[27] "Sticks + Stones" will be released in 2012 through Epic Records in the United States[28] On 13 December, a music video for "Dub on the Track" featuring underground artists Mic Righteous, Dot Rotten and Ghetts, who also all appear in the accompanying video, premiered on SBTV.[29][30] The song will not serve as the third single.[31]
December 2011, Cher Lloyd signed a record deal with L.A. Reid to Epic Records in the United States. She is expected to release her debut album in the United States in late 2012.[28]
"Want U Back" was confirmed[32] as the third single from the album. The single version features vocals from American rapper Astro and was released 19 February 2012.[33] Following the release of the music video on 6 January 2012, the single peaked at number twenty-six on the UK Singles Chart, due to digital downloads from the album.[34] Cher confirmed via her official website that "Beautiful People" is the fourth single from the album, but there is no official release date.[35]
In February 2012, Lloyd spoke out to BBC Radio on her consistent cyber-bullying and how she fears for her safety after becoming a victim of online bullying. "I'm public property and there's nothing I can do — I have got to deal with it." She continued: "The message that I have got for people is: I have always tried to act the hard person and that was just a front for me. It is about time now that I let people realise that I am a real person and if I can do it, with all these people that want a piece of me, then other victims can speak out as well. There have been many times when I have cried myself to sleep. I am very scared because I like to think people think I'm strong, because if they don't, then they might not think I can do it."[36] Lloyd also spoke to Newsbeat on how she thinks the government should take more action in preventing cyber-bullying.[37] On 24 February 2012, it was announced that Cher Lloyd has signed a modelling contract with Select. Select's special bookings revently stated:
Her strong individuality represents everything that we love about the youth today and their music. Like everyone, she is a melting pot of different emotions, from super confidence oozing fun to a vulnerability
Lloyd has previously appeared on the cover of RWD Magazine and modelled for fashion bible Wonderland.[38]
On 10 April 2012, Cher Lloyd announced she has started work on her second album, and has done a few songs.[39] Lloyd plans to re-release her single Want U Back in the US without Astro, but has recorded a remix with Snoop Dogg.[40] L.A. Reid also plans to introduce Lloyd to American media in New York, hoping Lloyd will make a breakthrough in America.[41] Cher Lloyd has recently confirmed her engagement to boyfriend Craig, and hopes to get married as soon as possible.[42][43][44] However, Lloyd has received controversy due to marriage at a young age, but has argued her "Gypsy background means she should have already married by now". She hopes to get married sometime in the summer of 2012.[45]

Enrique Iglesias (born Enrique Miguel Iglesias Preysler; May 8, 1975) is a Spanish singer, songwriter and occasional actor, popular in both the Latin market and the Hispanic American market in the United States. He is the son of the famous Spanish singer Julio Iglesias. Within five years of beginning his musical career in the 1990s, he became the biggest seller of Spanish-language albums of that decade. He made his crossover into the mainstream English language market before the turn of the millennium, signing a multi-album deal with Universal Music Group for an unprecedented US$50,000,000 with Universal Music Latino to release his Spanish albums and Interscope to release English albums. In 2010, he parted with Interscope and signed with another Universal Music Group label, Universal Republic.
Iglesias has sold over 100 million records worldwide, making him one of the best selling Spanish language artists of all time.[1] He has had five Billboard Hot 100 top five singles, including two number-ones, and holds the record for producing 22 number-one Spanish-language singles on the Billboard's Hot Latin Tracks.[2] He has also had ten number-one songs on Billboard's Dance charts, more than any other single male artist. Altogether, Iglesias has amassed 55 number-one hits on the various Billboard charts. Billboard has called him The King of Latin Pop and The King of Dance. Billboard also named Enrique the number two Latin artist of the years 1986–2011 (Luis Miguel taking the first spot).[3]

Iglesias was born in Madrid, Spain,[4] and is the third and youngest child of singer Julio Iglesias and socialite and magazine journalist Isabel Preysler. His mother is Filipina[5][6] and his father is of Spanish ancestry from Galicia.[7][8] His parents' marriage was annulled in 1979.
In 1986, Iglesias' grandfather, Dr. Julio Iglesias Puga, was kidnapped by the armed Basque terrorist group ETA. For their safety, Enrique and his brother, Julio Iglesias, Jr., were sent to live with their father in Miami.[9] He also lived in Belgrade, Serbia, for one year with his mother.[10] As his father's career kept him on the road, the young Iglesias was raised by the family nanny. He attended the prestigious Gulliver Preparatory School, where he made his singing debut in a production of Hello, Dolly!.[11] Iglesias later went on to study business at the University of Miami.[12]
Iglesias did not want his father to know about his plans for a musical career and did not want his famous surname to help advance his career. He borrowed money from his family nanny and he recorded a demo cassette tape which consisted of a Spanish song and two English songs. Approaching his father's former publicist, Fernan Martinez, the two promoted the songs under the stage name 'Enrique Martinez' with the backstory of being an unknown singer from Guatemala. Iglesias was signed the Mexican label Fonovisa. After dropping out of college, he traveled to Toronto to record his first album.[13]
On July 12, 1995, Iglesias released Enrique Iglesias, a collection of light rock ballads, including hits such as "Si Tú Te Vas", "Experiencia Religiosa", and others. The record sold half a million copies in its first week, a rare accomplishment then for an album recorded in a language other than English, going Gold in Portugal within the first week of release, and sold over a million copies in the next three months.[11]
His song "Por Amarte" was included in Televisa's telenovela Marisol, but with a twist: instead of Por amarte daría mi vida (To love you, I'd give my life), the words were Por amarte Marisol, moriría (To love you, Marisol, I'd die). The CD also yielded Italian and Portuguese editions of the album, with most of the songs translated into those languages.
Five singles released from this album, such as "Por Amarte", "No Llores Por Mí", and "Trapecista" topped the Billboard's Latin charts. The album went on to win Iglesias a Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Performance.
In 1997, Iglesias' star continued to rise with the release of Vivir (To Live), which put him up with other English language music superstars in sales for that year. The album also included a cover version of the Yazoo song "Only You", translated into Spanish as "Solo en Tí".
Three singles released from Vivir ("Enamorado Por Primera Vez", "Sólo en Ti" and "Miente") topped the Latin singles chart as well as those in several Spanish-speaking countries. Along with his father and Luis Miguel, Iglesias was nominated for an American Music Award in the first-ever awarded category of Favorite Latin Artist. It was said beforehand that the elder Iglesias would walk out if he did not win the award. Iglesias lost out to his father, but did perform the song "Lluvia Cae" at the event.
Insisting on playing stadiums for his first concert tour, that summer, Iglesias , backed by sidemen for Elton John, Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel, played to sold-out audiences in sixteen countries. Beginning in Odessa, Texas the tour went on to three consecutive nights in Mexico's Plaza de Toros, two consecutive nights at Monterrey's Auditorio Coca Cola and two at the Estadio River Plate in Buenos Aires, Argentina to over 130,000 people as well as 19 arenas in the U.S.[14]
In 1998, Iglesias released his third album, Cosas del Amor (Things of Love). Taking a more mature musical direction, the album, aided by the popular singles "Esperanza" and "Nunca Te Olvidaré", both of which topped the Latin singles chart, helped cement his status in the Latin music scene.
Iglesias did a short tour of smaller venues to accompany the release of the album, with one show being televised from Acapulco, Mexico. This was followed by a larger world tour of over eighty shows in even bigger venues. The Cosas del Amor Tour was the first ever concert tour sponsored by McDonald's.
He won an American Music Award in the category of Favorite Latin Artist against Ricky Martin and Los Tigres del Norte. The song "Nunca te Olvidaré" was also used as the theme music for a Spanish soap opera of the same name and he sang the song himself on the last episode of the series.
By 1999, Iglesias had begun a successful crossover career into the English language music market. Thanks to other successful crossover acts, most notably that of Ricky Martin and Selena, Latino artists and music had a great surge in popularity in mainstream music. After attending one of his concerts Will Smith asked Iglesias to contribute to the soundtrack of his movie Wild Wild West, his contribution "Bailamos" was released as a single and became a number one hit in the US.
After the success of "Bailamos", several mainstream record labels were eager to sign Iglesias. Signing a multi-album deal after weeks of negotiations with Interscope, Iglesias recorded and released his first full CD in English, Enrique. The pop album, with some Latin influences, took two months to complete. It contained the song Rhythm Divine, a duet with Whitney Houston entitled "Could I Have This Kiss Forever", and a cover of the Bruce Springsteen song "Sad Eyes".
In 2000 Iglesias performed at the Superbowl halftime show with Christina Aguilara. Shock jock Howard Stern repeatedly played a tape of a supposedly very off-key Iglesias on his radio show and accused the Iglesias of not being able to sing live. On June 8th 2000 Iglesias sang the song live on Stern's show with just a guitar accompanying him. After the performance Stern remarked "I respect you for coming in here; you really can sing".[15] Iglesias would remark that the controversy was the best promotion he could have. The album's single Be With You became Iglesias's second #1 single on Billboard's Hot 100.
In 2001 Iglesias released his second English language album Escape. Where most of the Latin crossover acts of the previous year experienced some difficulty matching the record sales of their first English language albums, Iglesias actually went on to sell even more. The album's first single, "Hero", became a number one hit in the United Kingdom, and in many other countries. The entire album was co-written by Iglesias.
Escape is his biggest commercial success to date. The singles "Escape" and "Don't Turn Off The Lights" became radio staples, fairing well and placing highly or topping various charts both in North America and elsewhere. A second edition of the album was released internationally and contained a new version of one of Iglesias's favorite tracks, "Maybe", as well as a duet with Lionel Richie called "To Love a Woman".
Iglesias capitalized on the album's success with his "One-Night Stand World Tour" consisting of 50 sold-out shows in 16 countries. Including Radio City Music Hall and three consecutive nights in London's Royal Albert Hall, the tour ended with a big show at Stadium National Lia Manoliu in Bucharest, Romania. The concert launched MTV Romania, with the video for "Love to See You Cry" being the first to be shown on the channel.
The second leg of the tour, "Don't Turn Off The Lights", was completed in the summer of 2002, with two sold-out nights in Madison Square Garden and another two in Mexico's National Auditorium. The tour finished with a single show in the Roberto Clemente Coliseum in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
In 2002, Iglesias chose to release a fourth Spanish-language album titled Quizás (Perhaps). A more polished musical production than his previous Spanish albums and containing more introspective songs, the album's title track is a song about the strained relationship Iglesias has with his famous father.
The album debuted at number 12 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, the highest placement of a Spanish language album on the chart at the time. Quizás sold a million copies in a week, making it the fastest-selling album in Spanish in 5 years. The three singles released from the album all ended up topping the Latin chart, giving Iglesias a total of 16 number ones on the chart. He currently holds the record for the most number one singles on Billboard's Latin Chart. His last single from the album, "Para Que la Vida", reached a million spins on U.S. radio, the only Spanish language song to do so.[16]
The video to the song "Quizás" was the first Spanish language music video to be added to the selection on one of MTV's popular show Total Request Live. Iglesias performed the song on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, becoming the first to sing a Spanish song on the show, and opening doors for other artists such as Ricky Martin, Juanes and Jorge Drexler to perform their Spanish material. Iglesias included songs from Quizás in his "Don't Turn Off the Lights Tour", and the album went on to win a Latin Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album.
By 2003 Iglesias released his seventh album, which he called 7, the second to be co-written by Iglesias. Among its more 1980s-inspired material, it features the song "Roamer", which he wrote with his friend and longtime guitarist, Tony Bruno. The CD also contained the song "Be Yourself", a song about independence (the chorus talks about how Iglesias' own parents did not believe he'd ever succeed in his singing career). The first single was the song "Addicted", and was followed closely by a remix of the song "Not in Love", featuring Kelis.
With this album, Iglesias went on his biggest world tour to date. The highly publicised tour started with twelve shows in the United States ending with Iglesias playing at Houston Rodeo and continued on to several countries, most of which he'd never previously visited playing to sold-out arenas and stadiums in Australia, India, Egypt and Singapore before ending his tour in South Africa.
Iglesias released his new album Insomniac on June 12, 2007. The album was so named due to it being recorded mainly at night. The album contained a more contemporary pop style than that of previous albums. The album's highlights include "Push", with rapper Lil' Wayne, as well as "Ring My Bells", and a cover of Ringside's "Tired of Being Sorry".
The first single "Do You Know? (The Ping Pong Song)" was released on April 10, 2007. It was the Iglesias's highest charting song on the Hot 100 since "Escape" it was also a hit throughout Europe peaking in the top 10 in many countries and the Spanish version entitled "Dímelo" was #1 on Hot Latin Tracks for 12 weeks becoming his second best performing song on that chart.
Iglesias followed up with the ballad "Somebody's Me", which was released as a single in the American continent. The song was played extensively on AC radio and peaked high on Billboard's Hot AC, where the Spanish version also performed well. In Europe, the second single was "Tired of Being Sorry", which performed well in many countries; he recorded a version of the song with French singer Nâdiya which was #1 in France for eleven weeks.
On July 4, Enrique Iglesias became the first Western artist to play a concert in Syria in three decades when he performed for a sold-out crowd of 10,000 in the capital [Damas] and in the same week performed on Live Earth in [Hamburg].
The Insomniac World Tour was launched at the Dome in Johannesburg, South Africa, the same venue he ended his last world Tour and took him to sold out arenas throughout Europe. It was his first arena tour of the UK with him playing venues such as Manchester's MEN Arena and Wembley Arena. The tour ended with Iglesias performing at newly opened L.A. Live. A second leg of the tour has taken him throughout Latin America from Mexico to Argentina.
A solo version of "Push" was added to the soundtrack of the movie Step Up 2 the Streets. The song was regarded as the third single from the album. A music video was shot which features the film's lead actors. Despite never being officially added to radio the song has charted in several countries and is one of his most highly rated songs amongst fans.
Iglesias's song "Can You Hear Me" has been chosen as the official song of the UEFA Euro 2008 football tournament.[17] He performed the song live at the June 29, 2008 final in Vienna, Austria.[18] The song featured on a re-issue of the Insomniac album being released in certain countries.
Iglesias released a Spanish Greatest Hits album on March 25, 2008 which included his seventeen #1 songs on Hot Latin Tracks chart, plus two new songs. The first single was the song "Dónde Están Corazón", which is written by Argentine star Coti and became Iglesias's 18th #1 single on Billboard's Hot Latin Songs. The album debuted at #1 on Billboard's Latin Albums Chart and #18 on the overall Billboard 200 albums chart. It was Iglesias's second Spanish album to debut in the top 20 of the Billboard 200 (Quizás debuted at #12 in 2002). The album was certified double Platinum (Latin field) in the U.S. and in some Latin American countries.
The album's second single "Lloro Por Ti" had an official remix featuring Wisin & Yandel which also reached #1. Iglesias did a tour of the US. Beginning in Laredo, Texas and ending at the Izod Center in New Jersey he was accompanied though most of the tour with Bachata band Aventura who also performed "Lloro Por Ti" with him at the Premios Juventud.
Iglesias was a surprise performer at the Lo Nuestro Awards, opening the show with a medley of "Dónde Están Corazón" and "Dimelo". He also performed at the Billboard Latin Music Awards, where he received a special award.
After the success of his Spanish Greatest Hits compilation, Iglesias released a compilation of his English language hits on November 11. The album includes "Can You Hear Me" as well two new songs. The first single is entitled "Away" featuring Sean Garrett and was followed by "Takin' Back My Love" featuring Ciara.[19]
The compilation includes English hit songs such as "Bailamos", "Hero", "Be with You", "Not in Love" and "Escape" which have topped various Billboard charts (two of which did so on the Hot 100) as well as songs such as "Rhythm Divine", "Tired of Being Sorry" and "Do You Know? (The Ping Pong Song)", which have also topped charts in Europe.
After the successful collaboration with Nadiya Iglesias has recorded a second duet with her called "Miss You" which featured on a deluxe edition of the album.
The album debuted at #3 on the official UK Albums Chart and sold over 80,000 copies in its first two weeks of release alone.
Iglesias was the winner of two World Music Awards in the categories of "World's Best Selling Latin Performer" and "World's Best Selling Spanish Artist", in the ceremony held in Monaco on November 9, 2008.
Earlier in 2010, Iglesias featured in the charity song We Are the World 25 for Haiti along with 25 other top artists from USA in order to raise funds for the Earthquake hit Haiti area. It was produced by Quincy Jones, and executively produced by Lionel Richie, and Haitian-American musician Wyclef Jean. Enrique also recorded the song "It Must Be Love" for the album Download to Donate for Haiti for the same cause.
On July 5, 2010, Iglesias released his ninth and tenth studio albums, Euphoria, his first work to be released under his new label, Universal Republic. The album is Iglesias's first bilingual album with seven original English songs and six original Spanish songs.[20] The album has won Billboard Music Award for Top Latin Album, Billboard Latin Award for Latin Album of the Year and Latin Pop Album of the Year and was nominated for Latin Grammy Award for Album of the Year.
Iglesias worked with three (actually four but one isn't mentioned) producers whom he has worked with before; RedOne, Mark Taylor and Carlos Paucer. The album features collaborations with Akon, Usher, Nicole Scherzinger, Ludacris, Pitbull, Juan Luis Guerra and his third duet with Wisin & Yandel. In a joint venture with Universal Latino Iglesias will release different singles in both languages simultaneously to different formats.
The first English single from the album, "I Like It", which features the rapper Pitbull, was released on May 3, 2010 in the U.S. and became a success, reaching number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.
"Cuando Me Enamoro" was released as the lead Spanish single from the album. The song debuted at number 8 and number 25 on U.S Latin Pop Songs and U.S. Hot Latin Songs, respectively. The song became his 25th top 10 single on the U.S. Billboard Hot Latin Songs & after 4 weeks of its release date it became his 21st No.1 song on this chart.[21][22]
As of January 2011 "Tonight (I'm Fuckin' You)" broke into the top 10 on the Billboard charts reaching no 4.[23] The song was released only for digital download in the U.S. although was featured on some Editions of "Euphoria" in Europe and some Asian areas. The song has became his first #1 on the US Pop Songs and Hot 100 airplay Charts.[24]
A remix version of "Dirty Dancer" was released and became his ninth Dance Club play chart topper making him the male with the most number-one dance singles. tying with Prince & Michael Jackson.[25][26] "Ayer" serves as the albums seventh single.
The Euphoria Tour has taken him across the US, Canada UK and Europe. A second which has taken him to Australia will include leg will include fellow artists Pitbull and Prince Royce and will be across North America. Iglesias was finalizing production for an extension to Euphoria, titled Euphoria Reloaded, however due to the poor commercial performance of I Like How It Feels featuring rapper Pitbull, plans of the rerelease were cut.The song topped the Billboard Hot Dance-Club Songs, making him the male artist with most number-one dance singles. Iglesias has recently collaborated with Dev on a song called "Naked". It was released on iTunes on December 20, 2011. This song was written by Iglesias.
Iglesias announced on 30 April, 2012 in a press conference at Boulevard3 that he would go on a joint world tour titled Jennifer Lopez and Enrique Iglesias in Concert with Jennifer Lopez & Wisin & Yandel. The trek is presented by State Farm Insurance and promoted by AEG Live. [27]
On May 22, 2012 Iglesias performed at the first Q102 Springle Ball 2012 concert, among the songs he performed were "Tonight I'm Loving You", "Hero", and "I Like It".
Iglesias has collaborated with songwriter Guy Chambers to write "Un Nuovo Giorno", the lead single from Andrea Bocelli's first pop album. The song was later translated into English as "First Day of My Life" and recorded by Spice Girl Melanie C. The song has since gone to become a huge hit throughout Europe, and peaked in the number one spot in numerous countries. Iglesias also wrote the single "The Way" for American Idol runner up Clay Aiken. Four songs co-written by Iglesias appear on the UK band The Hollies' current album. Many times Iglesias has said that should he ever retire, he wants to write and produce songs for other artists. In 2010 Idol Allstars 2010 (Swedish Idol Series) released a song "All I Need Is You" co-written by Iglesias with Andreas Carlsson, Kalle Engström and Kristian Lundin. It went straight to iTunes #1.
In 2000, Iglesias co-produced an off Broadway musical called Four Guys Named Jose and Una Mujer Named Maria. In the musical, four Americans of Latin heritage possess a common interest in music and meet and decide to put on a show. The show contained many references and allusions to many classic and contemporary Latin and pop songs by the likes of Carmen Miranda, Selena, Richie Valens, Santana, Ricky Martin and Iglesias himself.
Iglesias also developed an interest in acting, starring alongside Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek and Johnny Depp in the Robert Rodriguez film Once Upon a Time in Mexico, in which he played the foul-mouthed gun-wielding Lorenzo. In 2007, he had guest starred in the TV comedy Two and a Half Men as a carpenter/handyman. He says that he would act again if given small roles that he could fit in between his musical commitments.
He also guest starred as Gael, an Argentinean guitar playing/surfer/massage therapist love interest of Robin in season 3 of the CBS hit TV show How I Met Your Mother.
Iglesias also played the part of an evil Roman emperor in an ambitious TV commercial for Pepsi, which sponsored his last world tour. He starred alongside Britney Spears, Beyoncé and Pink, who turn the tables on him in the commercial. He's also starred in commercials for Tommy Hilfiger, Doritos and for Viceroy watches.
Iglesias started dating tennis player Anna Kournikova in late 2001 (she appeared in his video, "Escape"), and rumors that the couple had secretly married circulated in 2003 and again in 2005. Kournikova herself has consistently refused to directly confirm or deny the status of her personal relationships. But in May 2007, Enrique Iglesias was quoted (incorrectly, as he would clarify later) in the New York Sun that he had no intention of marrying Kournikova and settling down because they had split up[citation needed]. The singer would later deny these rumors of "divorce" or simply separation[citation needed]. In June 2008, Iglesias told the Daily Star that he had married Kournikova the previous year and that they are currently separated.[28] In an interview with Graham Norton in 2010, Kournikova confirmed that she and Iglesias have been together for over eight years but have no plans to marry in the near future.[citation needed]

Roger Federer (German pronunciation: [ˈfeːdəʁɐ]) (born 8 August 1981) is a Swiss professional tennis player who held the ATP No. 1 position for a record 237 consecutive weeks from 2 February 2004 to 18 August 2008.[2] Federer has occupied the #1 ranking for 285 overall weeks, one week short of the record 286 weeks held by Pete Sampras. As of 28 May 2012, he is ranked World No. 3. Federer has won a men's record 16 Grand Slam singles titles. He is one of seven male players to capture the career Grand Slam and one of three (with Andre Agassi and Rafael Nadal) to do so on three different surfaces (clay, grass, and hard courts). He is the only male player in tennis history to have reached the title match of each Grand Slam tournament at least five times and also the final at each of the nine ATP Masters 1000 Tournaments. Many sports analysts, tennis critics, and former and current players consider Federer to be the greatest tennis player of all time.[3][4][5][6][7][8][9]
Federer has appeared in an unprecedented 23 career Grand Slam tournament finals, including a men's record ten in a row, and appeared in 18 of 19 finals from the 2005 Wimbledon Championships through the 2010 Australian Open, the lone exception being the 2008 Australian Open. He holds the record of reaching the semifinals or better of 23 consecutive Grand Slam tournaments over five and a half years, from the 2004 Wimbledon Championships through the 2010 Australian Open.[10] At the 2012 Australian Open, he reached a record 31st consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinal. During the course of his run at the 2012 French Open in Roland Garros, Federer eclipsed Jimmy Connors long standing record of 233 match wins in Grand Slam tournaments when he defeated Adrian Ungur in a second round match.
Federer has won a record six ATP World Tour Finals and 20 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments. He also won the Olympic gold medal in doubles with his compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. He spent eight years (2003–2010) continuously in the top 2 in the year-end rankings and nine (2003–2011) in the Top 3, also a record among male players. His rivalry with Rafael Nadal is considered one of the greatest of all time in the sport. Federer is greatly respected by fans and by fellow players alike as shown by the fact that he has won the ATPWorldTour.com Fans' Favorite Award a record nine consecutive times (2003–2011) and the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award (which is voted for by the players themselves) a record seven times overall and six times consecutively (2004–2009, 2011). Federer also won the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian of the Year Award in 2006. In 2011, he was voted the second most trusted and respected person in the world, second only to Nelson Mandela.[11][12]
As a result of Federer's successes in tennis, he was named the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year for a record four consecutive years (2005–2008)[13] and in 2012 he topped a list of the "100 greatest tennis players of all time" (male or female) by Tennis Channel.[14] He is often referred to as the Federer Express[15] or abbreviated to Fed Express, or FedEx, the Swiss Maestro,[15] or simply Maestro.[15][16][17][18]

Federer was born in Binningen, Arlesheim near Basel, to Swiss national Robert Federer and South African-born Lynette Durand.[19] He holds both Swiss and South African citizenships.[20] He grew up in nearby Münchenstein, close to the French and German borders and speaks Swiss German, German, French and English fluently, Swiss German being his native language.[19][21][22] He was raised as a Roman Catholic and met Pope Benedict XVI while playing the 2006 Internazionali BNL d'Italia tournament in Rome.[23] Like all male Swiss citizens, Federer was subject to compulsory military service in the Swiss Armed Forces. However, in 2003 he was deemed unfit due to a long-standing back problem and was subsequently not required to fulfill his military obligation.[24] Federer himself also credits the range of sports he played as a child—he also played badminton and basketball—for his hand-eye coordination. "I was always very much more interested if a ball was involved," he says. Most tennis prodigies, by contrast, play tennis to the exclusion of all other sports.[25]
Federer is married to former Women's Tennis Association player Mirka Vavrinec. He met her while both were competing for Switzerland in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Vavrinec retired from the tour in 2002 because of a foot injury and has since been working as Federer's public relations manager.[26] They were married in Basel on 11 April 2009, surrounded by a small group of close friends and family at Wenkenhof Villa (municipality of Riehen).[27] On 23 July 2009, Mirka gave birth to twin girls, Myla Rose and Charlene Riva.[28]
Federer supports a number of charities. He established the Roger Federer Foundation in 2003 to help disadvantaged people and to promote sports.[29][30] In 2005, he auctioned his racquet from his US Open championship to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina.[31] He was appointed a Goodwill Ambassador by UNICEF in 2006.[32] At the 2005 Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells, Federer arranged an exhibition involving several top players from the ATP tour and WTA tour called Rally for Relief. The proceeds from the event went to the victims of the tsunami caused by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. Since then, he has visited South Africa and Tamil Nadu, one of the areas in India most affected by the tsunami.[33] He has also appeared in UNICEF public messages to raise public awareness of AIDS. In response to the 2010 Haiti earthquake, Federer arranged a collaboration with fellow top tennis players Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Andy Roddick, Kim Clijsters, Serena Williams, Lleyton Hewitt, and Sam Stosur to forgo their final day of preparation for the 2010 Australian Open to form a special charity event called Hit for Haiti, in which all proceeds went to Haiti earthquake victims.[34] He was named a 2010 Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in recognition of his leadership, accomplishments, and contributions to society.[35]
Similar to the 2010 event, Hit for Haiti, Federer organized and participated in a charity match called Rally for Relief on 16 January 2011, to benefit those that were affected by the 2010–2011 Queensland floods.
Federer is currently number 31 on Forbes top 100 celebrities as of May 2012. [36]
Federer's main accomplishments as a junior player came at Wimbledon in 1998, where he won both the boys' singles tournament over Irakli Labadze,[37] and in doubles teamed up with Olivier Rochus, defeating the team of Michaël Llodra and Andy Ram.[38] In addition, Federer lost the US Open Junior tournament in 1998 to David Nalbandian. He won four ITF junior singles tournaments in his career, including the prestigious Orange Bowl, where he defeated Guillermo Coria, in the finals.[39] He ended 1998 as the junior world no. 1.
Federer's first tournament as a professional was Gstaad in 1998 (12th grade), where he faced Lucas Arnold Ker in the round of 32 and lost.[40] Federer's first final came at the Marseille Open in 2000, where he lost to fellow Swiss Marc Rosset.[41] Federer won the 2001 Hopman Cup representing Switzerland along with Martina Hingis. The duo defeated the American pair of Monica Seles and Jan-Michael Gambill in the finals. Federer's first win was at the 2001 Milan Indoor tournament, where he defeated Julien Boutter.[41] Although he won his first ever title already in 1999 on the challenger tour, winning the doubles event in Segovia, Spain together with Dutchman Sander Groen, the finals was played on Federer´s 18th birthday. In 2001, Federer made his first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the French Open, and at Wimbledon that same year defeated four-time defending champion Pete Sampras to reach the quarterfinals. The most prestigious event final he reached during this period was the 2002 Miami Masters event, where he lost to Andre Agassi, on hard court.[42] In addition, Federer won his first Master Series event at the 2002 Hamburg Masters on clay, over Marat Safin; the victory made him a top-10 player for the first time.[42] Federer made 10 singles finals between 1998 and 2002, of which he won four and lost six.[40][41][42][43][44] He also made six finals in doubles. Of note are Federer and partner Max Mirnyi's defeat in the final of the Indian Wells Masters in 2002, and their victory in the same year in the final of the Rotterdam 500 series event. Federer had won the latter a year earlier with partner Jonas Björkman.[42][44]
In 2003, Federer won his first Grand Slam singles title at Wimbledon, beating Mark Philippoussis.[45] Federer won his first and only doubles Masters Series 1000 event in Miami with Max Mirnyi,[46] and made it to one singles Masters Series 1000 event in Rome on clay, which he lost.[45] Federer made it to nine finals on the ATP Tour and won seven of them, including the 500 series events at Dubai and Vienna.[45] Lastly, Federer won the year-end championships over Andre Agassi.[45]
During 2004, Federer won three Grand Slam singles titles for the first time in his career and became the first person to do so since Mats Wilander in 1988. His first Grand Slam hard-court title came at the Australian Open over Marat Safin. He then won his second Wimbledon crown over Andy Roddick.[47] Federer defeated the 2001 US Open champion, Lleyton Hewitt, at the US Open for his first title there.[47] Federer won three ATP Masters Series 1000 events. One was on clay in Hamburg, and the other two were on hard surfaces at Indian Wells and in Canada.[47] Federer took the ATP 500 series event at Dubai and wrapped up the year by winning the year-end championships for the second time.[47]
In 2005, Federer failed to reach the finals of the first two Grand Slam tournaments, losing the Australian Open semifinal to eventual champion Safin and the French Open semifinal to eventual champion Rafael Nadal.[48] However, Federer quickly reestablished his dominance on grass, winning the Wimbledon Championships over Andy Roddick. At the US Open, Federer defeated Andre Agassi in the latter's last Grand Slam final.[48] Federer also took four ATP Masters Series 1000 wins: Indian Wells, Miami, and Cincinnati on hard court, and Hamburg on clay.[48] Furthermore, Federer won two ATP 500 series events at Rotterdam and Dubai.[48] Federer lost the year-end championships to David Nalbandian in the final.[48]
In 2006, Federer won three Grand Slam singles titles and reached the final of the other, with the only loss coming against Nadal in the French Open. This was the two men's first meeting in a Grand Slam final.[49] Federer defeated Nadal in the Wimbledon Championships final. In the Australian Open, Federer defeated Marcos Baghdatis,[49] and at the US Open, Federer defeated Roddick (2003 champion).[49] In addition, Federer made it to six ATP Masters Series 1000 finals, winning four on hard surfaces and losing two on clay to Nadal. Federer won one ATP 500 series event in Tokyo and captured the year-end championships for the third time in his career.[49]
In 2007, Federer reached all four Grand Slam singles finals, winning three of them. He won the Australian Open over Fernando González, Wimbledon over Rafael Nadal for the second time, and the US Open over Novak Djokovic. Federer lost the French Open to Nadal.[50] Federer made five ATP Masters Series 1000 finals in 2007, winning the Hamburg and Cincinnati titles.[50] Federer won one 500 series event in Dubai and won the year-end championships.[50]
In 2008, Federer won one Grand Slam singles title, which came at the US Open over Briton Andy Murray.[51] Federer was defeated by Nadal in two Grand Slam finals, at the French Open, and at Wimbledon, when he was going for six straight wins to break Björn Borg's record.[51] At the Australian Open, Federer lost in the semifinals to Djokovic, which ended his record of 10 consecutive finals.[51] Federer lost twice in Master Series 1000 finals on clay to Nadal, at Monte Carlo and Hamburg.[51] However, Federer captured two titles in 250-level events at Estoril and Halle and one title in a 500 level event in Basel. In doubles, Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka won the gold medal at the Olympic Games.[52]

In 2009, Federer won two Grand Slam singles titles, the French Open over Robin Söderling, and Wimbledon over Andy Roddick.[53] Federer reached two other Grand Slam finals, losing to Nadal at the Australian Open, and to Juan Martín del Potro at the US Open.[53] Federer won two more events, the first at the Madrid Masters over Nadal in the final on clay.[53] The second was in Cincinnati over Djokovic, although Federer lost to Djokovic in Basel, later in the year.[53] Federer completed a career Grand Slam by winning his first French Open title and won a men's record fifteenth Grand Slam singles title, surpassing Pete Sampras's mark of fourteen.[53]
In 2010, Federer slowed down in his milestones and achievements. The year started with a win at the Australian Open,[54] where he defeated Andy Murray in the final and improved his Grand Slam singles record to sixteen titles.[51] But at the French Open, Federer failed to reach a Grand Slam semifinal for the first time since the 2004 French Open, losing to Söderling, in the quarterfinals, and losing his no. 1 ranking.[54] At the French Open, Federer won his 700th tour match and 150th tour match on clay.[54][55] Federer was just one week away from equaling Pete Sampras's record of 286 weeks as world no. 1. In a big surprise at Wimbledon, Federer lost in the quarterfinal to Tomáš Berdych, and fell to world no. 3 in the rankings.[54][56][57] At the 2010 US Open, Federer reached the semifinals, avenging his French Open loss to Söderling in the quarterfinals, but then lost a five-set match to third seed Novak Djokovic.[54] Federer made it to four Masters 1000 finals, losing three of them (the Madrid Open, the Canadian Masters, and the Shanghai Masters) while winning the Cincinnati Masters against Mardy Fish.[58] In 2010 Federer equaled Agassi for the number of Masters wins at 17 and tied Bjorn Borg's mark for number of total titles won, moving to just one behind Sampras. Towards the middle of July, Federer hired Pete Sampras' old coach Paul Annacone to put his tennis game and career on the right path on a trial basis.[59] Federer won two lesser titles at the Stockholm Open and the Davidoff Swiss Indoors which brought his tally to 65 career titles. Lastly, Federer won the year-end championships by beating rival Rafael Nadal, for his fifth title at the event. He showed much of his old form, beating all contenders except Nadal in straight sets. Since Wimbledon 2010, Federer had a win-loss record of 34–4 and had multiple match points in two of his losses: to Novak Djokovic in the semifinal of the US Open, and to Gaël Monfils in the semifinal of the Paris Masters. Federer did not play in the 2010 Davis Cup.
The year 2011, although great by most players' standards, was a lean year for Federer. He was defeated in straight sets in the semifinals of the 2011 Australian Open by eventual champion Novak Djokovic, marking the first time since July 2003 that he did not hold any of the four Major titles. In the French Open semifinal, Federer ended Djokovic's undefeated streak of 43 consecutive wins with a stunning four-set victory. However, Federer then lost in the final to Rafael Nadal. At Wimbledon, Federer advanced to his 29th consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinal, but lost to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. It marked the first time in his career that he had lost a Grand Slam match after winning the first two sets. At the US Open, Federer lost a much-anticipated semifinal match with Novak Djokovic, after squandering two match points in the fifth set which repeated his previous year's result against Djokovic and added a second loss from two sets up in Grand Slam play to his record. The loss at Flushing Meadows meant that Federer did not win any of the four Majors in 2011, the first time this has happened since 2002.
During this 2011 season, Federer won the Qatar Open, defeating Nikolay Davydenko in the final. However, he lost the final in Dubai to Djokovic and lost in the Miami Masters and Madrid Open semifinals to Rafael Nadal. In pulling out of the 2011 Shanghai Masters, Federer dropped out of the top 3 for the first time since June 2003.[60] Later in the season, things picked up for Federer. He ended a 10-month title drought and won the Swiss Indoors for the fifth time, defeating youngster Kei Nishikori, who had defeated an ailing Djokovic in the semifinals. Federer followed this up with his first win at the Paris Masters, where he reached his first final at the event and defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. At the 2011 ATP World Tour Finals, Federer crushed Rafael Nadal in exactly one hour en route to the semifinals,[61] where he defeated David Ferrer to reach the final at the year-end championships for the seventh time, his 100th tour-level final overall. As a result of this win, Federer also regained the world no. 3 ranking from Andy Murray. In the final, he defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga for the third consecutive Sunday and, in doing so, claimed his record sixth ATP World Tour Finals title.[62]
Federer began his 2012 season with the Qatar Open, where he withdrew in the semifinals. He then played in the 2012 Australian Open, where he reached the semifinals, setting up a 27th career meeting with Nadal, a match he lost in four tight sets. He then participated in the Davis Cup representing Switzerland in the 2012 Davis Cup World Group, but Switzerland was eliminated in a home tie against the United States played on indoor clay in Fribourg. The loss included a four-set defeat for Federer at the hands of John Isner as well as a tight four-set loss with Stanislas Wawrinka in the doubles rubber against Mardy Fish and Mike Bryan. He then played the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament for the first time since winning the title in 2005. He beat del Potro in the final to clinch his second title in Rotterdam. Federer then played in the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships where he defeated Andy Murray in the final, improved his record against him to 7–8, and won the championship title for the fifth time in his career. Federer then moved on to the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, where he defeated Rafael Nadal in the semifinal, and defeated John Isner in the final. Federer won the title for a record fourth time, and, in doing so, equalled Rafael Nadal's record of 19 ATP Masters 1000 titles. Federer then lost in the third round of the Sony Ericsson Open to Andy Roddick in three sets. Federer went on to compete at the Madrid Masters on new blue clay, where he beat Milos Raonic, Richard Gasquet, David Ferrer, Janko Tipsarevic and Tomáš Berdych in the final and regained the world no. 2 ranking from Rafael Nadal in the process. Federer then participated in the Internazionali BNL d'Italia tournament in Rome where he won over Carlos Berlocq, Juan Carlos Ferrero and Andreas Seppi en route to the semifinal, where he was defeated in straight sets by the defending champion and 2012 runner up Novak Djokovic.
Federer and Nadal have been playing each other since 2004, and their rivalry is a significant part of both men's careers.[63][64][65][66][67]
They held the top two rankings on the ATP Tour from July 2005 until 14 September 2009, when Nadal fell to World No. 3 (Andy Murray became the new No. 2).[68] They are the only pair of men to have ever finished four consecutive calendar years at the top. Federer was ranked number 1 for a record 237 consecutive weeks beginning in February 2004. Nadal, who is five years younger, ascended to No. 2 in July 2005 and held this spot for a record 160 consecutive weeks before surpassing Federer in August 2008.[69]
Nadal leads their head-to-head 18–10. However, most of their matches have been on clay. Federer has a winning record on grass (2–1) and indoor hard courts (4–0) while Nadal leads the outdoor hard courts by 5–2 and clay by 12–2.[70] Because tournament seedings are based on rankings, 19 of their matches have been in tournament finals, including an all-time record 8 Grand Slam finals.[71] From 2006 to 2008 they played in every French Open and Wimbledon final, and then they met in the 2009 Australian Open final and the 2011 French Open final. Nadal won six of the eight, losing the first two Wimbledons. Three of these matches were five set-matches (2007 and 2008 Wimbledon, 2009 Australian Open), and the 2008 Wimbledon final has been lauded as the greatest match ever by many long-time tennis analysts.[72][73][74][75] They have also played in a record 9 Masters Series finals, including their lone five hour match at the 2006 Rome Masters which Nadal won in a fifth-set tie-break having saved two match points.
The two have met 25 times with Federer leading 14–11, and 5–4 in Grand Slam events. Djokovic is the only player besides Nadal to have defeated Federer more than once in a Grand Slam tournament since 2004, the only player besides Nadal to defeat Federer in consecutive grand slam tournaments (2010 US Open and 2011 Australian Open) and the only player besides Nadal who has "double figure" career wins over Federer. Djokovic is one of two players (the other again being Nadal) currently on tour to have defeated Federer in straight sets at a Grand Slam (2008 Australian Open and 2011 Australian Open) and the only player to do it two times.
Because of the continuously improving game and general rise of Djokovic in the last 3 years, many experts include Djokovic when talking about Nadal and Federer (all 3 have played each other at least 25 times) and Federer has cited his rivalry with Djokovic as his second favorite after his rivalry with Nadal. Experts such as John McEnroe have said that this is the beginning of a new change in tennis. Djokovic's recent back-to-back-to-back wins against Federer at the Australian Open, Dubai and Indian Wells tournament have made this rivalry even more intense. During that span, Djokovic had gone on a 43–0 winning streak dating back to the Davis Cup final the previous year. Federer ended Djokovic's perfect 41–0 season defeating him in the semifinals of the 2011 French Open, but Djokovic was able to avenge his loss at the 2011 US Open, and Federer lost with a score of 6–7, 4–6, 6–3, 6–2, 7–5.[76] Federer cited this as one of the greatest losses in his career, as he had 2 consecutive match points in set five, with his serve, and was 2 sets up before Djokovic came back in what has become one of the greatest comebacks in tennis history (according to John McEnroe). McEnroe claimed that Djokovic's crosscourt forehand return was "one of the great all-time shots in tennis history" and that the semifinal was one of the greatest matches in history. Djokovic contributed to ending Federer's eight-year streak of winning at least one Grand Slam title per year and Djokovic became the second male tennis player to have at least 10 wins against Federer (the other being Nadal).
Many experts have included the rivalry between Federer and Djokovic as one of the best hard-court rivalries in the Open Era.[77]
Federer and Murray have met 15 times, all hard courts, with Murray leading 8–7.[78] Federer has won each of their Grand Slam matches (both were in the final) in straight sets at the 2008 US Open[79] and 2010 Australian Open,[80] but Murray leads 5–1 in ATP 1000 tournaments. They have met three times in the ATP World Tour Finals, with Murray winning in Shanghai in 2008[81] and Federer in London in 2009 and 2010.[82] Their most recent encounter was in the 2012 Dubai final where Federer was victorious. Apart from Nadal, Murray is the only other active player to have a positive head to head record against Federer.
Federer and Lleyton Hewitt have played each other on 26 occasions. Early in their careers, Hewitt dominated Federer, winning seven of their first nine meetings, including a victory from two sets down in the 2003 Davis Cup semifinal which allowed Australia to defeat Switzerland. However, from 2004 onward, Federer has dominated the rivalry, winning 16 of the last 17 meetings to emerge with a 18–8 overall head-to-head record.[83] This is Federer's longest rivalry as these two first played each other as juniors in 1996. They have met in one Grand Slam final, the 2004 US Open final, where Federer won to win his first US Open title. Federer is 9–0 against Hewitt in Grand Slams, and has won six of the Grand Slams in which he has defeated Hewitt.
One of Federer's longstanding rivalries is with American Andy Roddick. Federer and Roddick have met on many occasions, including in four Grand Slam finals (three at Wimbledon and one at the US Open). Federer leads 21–3, making Roddick the ATP player with the most tournament losses to Federer. Roddick lost his World No. 1 ranking to Federer after Federer won his first Australian Open in 2004.
In the 2009 Wimbledon final, Roddick lost to Federer in five sets. It included a fifth set made up of 30 games (a Grand Slam final record) and a match that was over 4 hours long. With that victory, Federer broke Pete Sampras' record of 14 Grand Slam titles.
David Nalbandian was Federer's biggest rival earlier in his career. Both players had an outstanding junior career, Federer won the Wimbledon junior title and Nalbandian won the US Open junior title (beating Federer). Even though Federer has a narrow advantage against Nalbandian, leading their meetings 11–8, Nalbandian beat Federer in their first five meetings after turning professional, including the fourth round of both the Australian Open and US Open in 2003. Their most impressive match was in the 2005 Shanghai Tennis Master Cup, where Nalbandian came back from being two sets to love down against Federer and ultimately prevailed in a fifth set tiebreak. The loss prevented Federer from tying John McEnroe's 82–3 all-time single year record, set in 1984. Nalbandian, Lleyton Hewitt and Andy Murray have beaten Federer 8 times, with only Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic recording more victories over Federer.
Federer's versatility was summarised by Jimmy Connors: "In an era of specialists, you're either a clay court specialist, a grass court specialist, or a hard court specialist...or you're Roger Federer."[84]
Federer is an all-court, all-round player known for his speed, fluid style of play, and exceptional shot making. Federer mainly plays from the baseline but is also comfortable at the net, being one of the best volleyers in the game today. He has a powerful, accurate smash and very effectively performs rare elements in today's tennis, such as backhand smash, half-volley and jump smash (slam dunk). David Foster Wallace compared the brute force of Federer's forehand motion with that of "a great liquid whip,"[85] while John McEnroe has referred to Federer's forehand as "the greatest shot in our sport."[86] Federer is also known for his efficient movement around the court and excellent footwork, which enables him to run around shots directed to his backhand and instead hit a powerful inside-out or inside-in forehand, one of his best shots. Though Federer plays with a single-handed backhand which gives him great variety. Federer's forehand and backhand slice are both known as the best ever to enter the game. He employs the slice, occasionally using it to lure the opponent to the net and pass him. Federer can also fire topspin winners and possesses a 'flick' backhand where he can generate pace with his wrist; this is usually used to pass the opponent at the net.[85] His serve is difficult to read because he always uses a similar ball toss regardless of what type of serve he is going to hit and where he aims to hit it, and turns his back to his opponents during his motion. He is often able to produce big serves on key points during a match. His first serve is typically around 200 km/h (125 mph);[87][88][89] however, he is capable of serving at 220 km/h (137 mph).[87][88] Federer is also accomplished at serve and volleying,[90] and employed this tactic especially frequently in his early career.[91] His speciality is a half-volley from the baseline which enables him to play close to the baseline and to pick up even the deeper shots very early after they bounce, giving his opponents less time to react.[citation needed] Later in his career Federer added the drop shot to his arsenal, and can perform a well-disguised one off both wings. He sometimes uses a between-the-legs shot, which is colloquially referred to as a "tweener." His most notable use of the tweener was in the semifinals of the 2009 US Open against Novak Djokovic, bringing him triple match point, on which he capitalised for a straight-set victory over the Serb.[92]
Federer currently plays with a customised Wilson Pro Staff Six.One 90 BLX tennis racquet,[93] which is characterised by its smaller hitting area of 90 square inches, heavy strung weight of 357.2 grams, and thin beam of 17.5 millimeters. His grip size is 4 3/8 inches (sometimes referred to as L3).[94] Federer strings his racquets at 21.5 kg mains/20 kg crosses pre stretched 20%, utilizing Wilson Natural Gut 16 gauge for his main strings and Luxilon Big Banger ALU Power Rough 16L gauge (polyester) for his cross strings.[94] When asked about string tensions, Federer stated "this depends on how warm the days are and with what kind of balls I play and against who I play. So you can see – it depends on several factors and not just the surface; the feeling I have is most important."[95]
Federer is one of the highest-earning athletes in the world. He has a contract with Nike footwear and apparel.[96] For the 2006 championships at Wimbledon, Nike designed a jacket emblazoned with a crest of three tennis racquets, symbolising the three Wimbledon Championships he had previously won, and which was updated the next year with four racquets after he won the Championship in 2006.[97] In Wimbledon 2008 and again in 2009, Nike continued this trend by making him a personalised cardigan.[98] He also has his own logo, an R and F joined together.[99] Federer endorses Gillette,[100] Jura, a Swiss-based coffee machine company,[101] as well as Mercedes-Benz and NetJets. Federer also endorses Rolex watches,[102] although he was previously an ambassador for Maurice Lacroix.[103] Also in 2009 Federer became brand ambassador for Swiss chocolate makers Lindt.[104] In 2010 his endorsement by Mercedes-Benz China was extended into a global Mercedes-Benz partnership deal.[105]

Place of death |
This is the first day of my last days
I built it up, now I take it apart
Climbed up real high, now fall down real far
No need to me to stay, the last thing left I just threw it away
I put my faith in god and my trust in you
Now there's nothing more fucked up I could do
Wish there was something real, wish there was something true
Wish there was something real in this world full of you
I'm the one without a soul, I'm the one with this big fucking hole
Now new tale to tell, twenty-six years on my way to hell
Gotta listen to your big time
hard line, bad luck, fist fuck
Don't think you're having all the fun
you know me, I hate everyone
Wish there was something real, wish there was something true
Wish there was something real in this world full of you
Wish there was something real, wish there was something true
Wish there was something real in this world full of you
Wish there was something real, wish there was something true
Wish there was something real in this world full of you
in this world full of you
in this world full of you
in this world full of you
I'll never be happy, I wish that I would
Unless you can love me, if only you could
I used to be lonely, knock on wood
What do you think of me? It's understood
And now I wander all my life just to get by
The tears flow like wine
And now I find you're so far away
And I love you
Love you
Apart from Jesus, I find new hope
I seek salvation in a bar of soap
To wash away my sins before I go
And make a new day, say 'Hey, I can cope'
I've always been lonely, 'Till I met her
Making me shine, all the time
Her love was mine
And I love her
Love her
If you were just for me, that would be good
I'd be really happy, I wish that I could
I used to be lonely, knock on wood
I wish that you'd love me, I misunderstood
I just can't get by, you were a high
You were so lovely, I really believed
Now you're so far away
I still love you
this is the first day of my last days
i built it up now i take it apart climbed up real high now fall down
real far.
no need for me to stay the last thing left i just threw it away
i put my faith in god and my trust in you
now there's nothing more fucked up i could do
wish there was something real wish there was something true
wish there was something real in this world full of you
i'm the one without a soul i'm the one with this big fucking hole
no new tale to tell twenty-six years on my way to hell
gotta listen to your big time hard line bad luck fist fuck
don't think you're having all the fun
you know me i hate everyone
wish there was something real wish there was something true
wish there was something real in this world full of you
i want to but i can't turn back
transformation
unable to sleep
burning tears
the pain goes too deep
every night
a pulsating stream
tested motions
electric beam
give me love
give me pain
recreation
endless solitude
transformation
emotion interlude
shiny wires
implanted veins
I desire
memory remains
wrong conclusions
I go insane
controlled illusions
remain the same
give me love
so you found
a better hiding place than on the ground
inside the image
of who they think you are
I wish the best of everything for you
I hope you know that honestly I do
how long can you run
turn your back on everyone
just let me know
when you're tired of being alone
so you wait
all through the night and day to day
wait for the illusion of the perfect song
I wish the best of everything for you
hope you know that I honestly I do
how long can you run
turn your back on everyone
just let me know
Was standing in the darkness
I was watching over you
And all the fears came drifting back
With every little breath you drew
Wished upon a falling star
Cold and pale against the night
And all the fears came drifting back
To cloud the view and steal the light
Was underneath a falling snow
I was lying next to you
And all the fears came floating down
With every little wind that blew
Wished upon a passing cloud
Cold and pale against the gray
And all the fears came floating down
To cloud the view and steal the day
May you never know this darkness
May you never be so blind
May you always know the peace
That I could never seen to find
May you never know this darkness
May you always see the light
May you always know the peace
I wish it was spring
I wish it was your house
We'd invite the beggars
Hanging 'bout your front fence
Wish I was your tree
I wish we could bend and bow
Like the branch of ash
Bum idols for love
Bum idols for love
I wish we could dress
In only happy cloaks
And blow rave waves
In the lily pond
I wish I was your mirror
Give you up my wand
Wish I was your mirror
Be your fine shine
Wish I was a nomad
Living in your land
An Irish tinker
Drinking juice of rose
From your hand
Wish I was a beggar
Waiting at your door
I wish we could dress
In only happy cloaks
And blow rave waves
To the lily pond
I wish I was your mirror
Give you up my wand
Wish I was your mirror
Be your fine shine
I wish I could rush
To see the first sun
Rise to your call
Sometimes
I Still Hear You
In Someone Else's Voice
Sometimes
It Get's Lonely
But Do I Have A Choice
No One Seems To Notice
The Breaking Of A Heart
No One Sees My Dreams Falling Apart
I Wish I Didn't Need You
I Wish You Never Looked Into My Eyes
I Wish I didn't Need You
But I've Been Blinded By Your Lies
I Never Knew
That Love Could Be So Wrong
Can I Walk Away
From Where My Heart Belongs
Somewhere
In This Madness
I'm Lost Without A Guide
Somehow
Though I Fight It
The Memory Subsides
No One Seems To Notice
The Breaking Of A Heart
No One Sees My Dreams Falling Apart
I Wish I Didn't Need You
I Wish You Never Looked Into My Eyes
I Wish I didn't Need You
But I've Been Blinded By Your Lies
I Never Knew
That Love Could Be So Wrong
Can I Walk Away
This is the first day of my last days

don't think you're having all the fun
you know me I hate everyone
wish there was something real, wish there was something true
wish there was something real in this world full of you
I want to but I can't turn back
All they found was a foot inside a shoe
In a little town in a hotel room
And a pile of ashes on the floor
And a note that read
I can?t live to love you anymore
Wish I could with all my might
Grab the stars in the night
Dig my feet into the ground
And stop this world from spinning 'round
Then you might see and understand
And turn around and come back again
'Cause you?re the only thing I?m living for
I wish you could find your little peace of mind
I wish you would try to overcome your self-denial
I wish that one day you'll come and make me say
I swear, I can fly, I will take you to the sky
yeah, yeah
what can I do for you my son?
I'll grant you any wish you want
what can I do for you my son?
I'll give you everything I own
hey
I'll pick the stars out of the sky
and make a necklace for your smile
I'll sail the seas to make you trust in me
I'll walk from here to eternity
to become the man you are for be
I wish you could fly, to take me to the sky
what can I do for you my son?
I'll grant you any wish you want
no need to prove to you my son
I'll give you anything I own
what can I do for you my son?
I'll grant you any wish you want
what can I do for you my son?
I'll give you anything I own
I will not speak strangely of this
Just put myself where you are
Life is so much clearer adrift
Just put myself where you are
Your wish is my sentence
And your truce, I can't deny
Blocked veins in the system
I think there you are
So I just put myself where you are
I could come much closer than this
To put myself where you are
But if life is just to hold and resist
I'll lose myself
Your wish is my sentence
Your truce, I can't deny
Blocked veins in the system
I think there you are
So I just put myself where you are
I just put myself where you are
So your wish is my sentence
Your truce, I can't deny
Blocked veins in the system
I think there you are
So I just put myself where you are
I will not speak strangely of this
I just put myself where you are
Life is so much clearer adrift
I just put myself where you are
I could come much closer than this
Just put myself where you are
I will not speak strangely of this
Just put myself where you are
See the sun
Shine above your head
See the love
That you once had
Don't ever let go
Oh no
[x2]
See the dreams
That you hold inside
See the hope
See the colors fly
Don't ever let go
Oh no
[x2]
And if you wish upon it
With open eyes
The world will sing to you
Yeah if you really want it
Then hold on tight
You've got everything to loose
See the world
Through a child's eyes
Never give up
Or let it slip by
Don't ever let go
Oh no
Don't ever let go, don't ever let go
When fortunes open wide
And if you wish upon it
You'll be surprised
How the world will sing to you
If you really want it
Then hold on tight
You've got everything to loose
Don't ever let go
You need to keep the dream alive
Don't ever let go, don't ever let go
This is the first day of my last days

Make a wish, make a succotash wish
You live the pompous life
Throw kisses all the time
Make wishes don't break mine
Cold fire use to inspire all not now
These are tired, maybe they'll find their nitch
Or resort to wish
Make a wish, make a succotash wish
You live the pompous life
Throw kisses all the time
Make wishes don't break mine
Don't be low, you better watch the road
Don't be low, you got the strength and the balls
Chimes use to break my wish
Back.. won't you bring him back? Not now
Pretty Girl
With heels on legs
If I had your brain instead
Then I probably wouldn't feel a thing
What do you think your Daddy said
If he ever really cared
Get your lipstick on
Get in the ring
Don't wish it all away
Tuck me up with me on one
It's over just for fun
Ain't we the lucky ones
Tuck me up with me on one
Ain't we the lucky ones
Throw me over
Waste me just for fun
In the street there's a heavy sound
All the people moving underground
If you're quiet you can hear them breathe
Feel it shake beneath your feet
Drop the rhythm
Cut the beat
Time is moving in
Don't wish it all away
Tuck me up with me on one
It's over just for fun
Ain't we the lucky ones
Tuck me up with me on one
Ain't we the lucky ones
Throw me over
Waste me just for fun
Don't wish it all away
Tuck me up with me on one
It's over just for fun
Ain't we the lucky ones
Tuck me up with me on one
Ain't we the lucky ones
Throw me over
Waste me just for fun
Don't wish it all away
Please just give me a Chan Marshall eulogy.
If I was ever anything at all, it's all breaking news to me.
Breaking down in a rage just to apologize. It's really so strange
watching all these strangers sigh.
If feels like I'm living through my last days every day.
On your strongest of days you couldn't make me feel any less insane.
Wish the ongoing theme about me
wasn't "he's just crazy"
Wish I knew safety.
Wish nothing phased me.
Wish I felt more than just feelings of unrest.
Last night in a dream
An angel came to me
She granted me one wish
And when she asked what it would be
Did I wish that we all could live in peace?
Did I wish for an end to poverty?
No, I wished it away so selfishly
When I wished that you would always love me
This morning when I woke
I found myself in pain
Though it was just a dream
I was so ashamed
Did I wish that we all could live in peace?
Did I wish for an end to poverty?
No, I wished it away so selfishly
When I wished that you would always love me
If I could only dream that dream once more
I wouldn't make the same mistake that I made before
With my one wish, I'd wish for three wishes more
I'd wish that we all could live in peace
I'd wish for an end to poverty
And here's what my last wish would be

Wish..........
For just a moment I wish I could have been there
To see your first step
To hear your very first word
Tell me did you ever fall and scrape your knee
Did you know your wounds would one day heal the world
For just one moment I wish I could have seen you growing,
Learning the ways of a capenter's son
Just a little boy gazing at the stars
Did you remember creating every one
If you passed by would I see a child or a king
Or would i have known
Chorus:
I wish I could have been there
My only wish is to see you face to face
I wish I could have been there
Just to see you Jesus face to face
For just one moment I wish I could have been there
When you left your footprints upon the waves
To walk along beside you never look away
Just your whisper and the wind and sea obey
To see you feed the people
To feel the healing in your touch
I wish I could have been there
Chorus
To hear you pray in the garden alone
Laying youe will with each tear
To see you walk that lonely road
Willing to die for me
And in that
Moment I know I should have been there
You took my cross and gave your life
But you live again
I wish I could have been there
I wish thatI could have seen you rise again
I wish I could have been there
My only wish is to see you face to face
Someday i'll be there
I'm gonna be there
I'll see your face
Your mercy and grace
Someday
I thought I got the A-Z but now I'm lost
And I don't know where I'm going', I don't know what I'm looking for
I'm all burnt out
There ain't that much I care about
And I know I'm missing something
I don't know what I'm supposed to do anymore
I won't let it get to me
But I really miss you badly
I wish I knew how I'm gonna be happy without you
I don't know what I'm supposed to do
I thought I got it all mapped out but now I'm lost
In a world that ain't got you in I don't know what I'm living for
Hopeless without the only thing I cared about
Cos you've been my salvation in a place where there's no love anymore
I won't let it get to me
But I'm gonna miss you badly
I wish I knew how I'm gonna be happy without you
I don't know what I'm supposed to do
I wish I knew how I'm gonna be happy without you
In a different world without you
I wish I knew how I'm gonna be happy without you
I don't know what I'm supposed to do
I wish I knew how I'm gonna be happy without you
Thoughts and focus
sounds and motion, back and forth
To reap rewards
Moving slowly, ever slowly
Cannot wait for you solution
And it's over now
Had all the drama we could take
Casting shadows south
Within a promise we can't break
And it's over now
Had all the smiles I could fake
Casting shadows south
Within a promise we can't break
All I ever wanted
All ever need was proof
I feel lack of motive
I wish my own mind soared
I wish that I could seed the truth
I want you to notice
Words are spoken, silence broken
Nevermind man, it was nothing
An appointment with your vision
Sometimes I feel alone in the dark
Sometimes I feel the pressure will tear me apart
But you disappeared
When madness creeps around me
Wish you were here
The sound of devils and angels fill my mind
Whispering spirits
Unholy and Divine
But you disappeared
When darkness creeps around me
Wish you were here
We were not ordinary people
Bound to every fairy tale we're told
Without you I get no mercy
From a world that feels so desolate and cold
Sometimes I feel I'll see you once again
But I know there's nothing to save us in the end
So you disappeared
When darkness creeps around me
Wish you were here
I WISH I
COULD GO TO SLEEP AND
HAVE A DREAM OF YOU
IT’S BEEN SO LONG
I'VE GONE TO SLEEP AND
HAD A DREAM OF YOU
ESTE SON Y EL TIEMPO MALO
HAVE TAKEN ME AWAY FROM YOU
AND ALL THE BAD DREAMS I’VE HAD I’LL LEAVE THEM UNDER THE
BRIDGE I PROMISE I WON'T GIVE OUT I PROMISE I WILL GIVE
IN IF YOU WOULD ONLY LOOK BACK LOOK BACK AND LET YOURSELF
IN IF YOU WOULD JUST COME AND STAY BY MY SIDE AND ALL THE
BAD DREAMS I'VE HAD I'LL LEAVE THEM UNDER THE BRIDGE I
PROMISE I WON’T GIVE OUT I PROMISE I WILL GIVE IN IF YOU
WOULD ONLY LOOK BACK LOOK BACK AND LET YOURSELF IN IF YOU
WOULD JUST COME AND STAY BY MY SIDE
I WENT BY
THE DAYS OF UNDER WITHOUT A DREAM OF YOU
I CAN'T WAIT CAN’T TAKE ANOTHER WITHOUT A LITTLE DREAM
I HOPE YOU SEE ME TOO
BEEN SAVING ALL MY DREAMS FOR YOU
AND ALL THE BAD DREAMS I'VE HAD I'LL LEAVE THEM UNDER THE
BRIDGE I PROMISE I WON'T GIVE OUT I PROMISE I WILL GIVE
IN IF YOU WOULD ONLY LOOK BACK LOOK BACK AND LET YOURSELF
IN IF YOU WOULD JUST COME AND STAY BY MY SIDE AND ALL THE
BAD DREAMS I'VE HAD I'LL LEAVE THEM UNDER THE BRIDGE I
PROMISE I WON'T GIVE OUT I PROMISE I WILL GIVE IN IF YOU
(oh, oh, oh, oh, oh)
(Oh yeah)
Every minute I'm away from you
Is a minute I can't get through
Wish I knew just what to do
Coz it doesn't feel right
Sometimes when I close my eyes
I can hold in my mind
But it never really satisfied
Wish I could keep dreaming.
I wanna tell you
What I've been going through
I wanna hold you
Close to my heart
And make you smile again
Just like I did back then
I would but we're so far apart.
I wish you were here
Instead of my tears
Wish I could close my eyes
And make you appear
Wish I could snap my fingers
Back to the time when you were mine
And I wish that hocus-pocus
Could change your goodbye
Girl I wish you could see this eyes
Baby I apologize...
Should've been there when you cried
Can you forgive me?
I know I say these words in vain
Right now you can't hear my pain
I wish that like the rain
You'd come down from the sky
I've never told you, how much I love you
Just let that moment passed me by
I couldn't see it, what you really needed
Now that I know it
I wish you could hear this
I wish you were here
Instead of my tears
Wish I could close my eyes
And make you appear
Wish I could snap my fingers
Back to the time when you were mine
And I wish that hocus-pocus
Could change your goodbye
I wish you were here
Instead of my tears
Wish I could close my eyes
And make you appear
Wish I could snap my fingers
Back to the time when you were mine
And I wish that hocus-pocus
Could change your goodbye
I just can't stop
Thinking about us
If you can hear this
Grant me this wishes (ooh, ooh)
Listen babe...
Star light, star bright
First star I see tonight
Wish I may, wish I might
Have my wish tonight
Star light, star bright
First star I see tonight
Wish I may, wish I might
Have my wish tonight
I wish you were here
Instead of my tears
Wish I could close my eyes
And make you appear
Wish I could snap my fingers
Back to the time when you were mine
And I wish that hocus-pocus
Could change your goodbye
I wish you were here
Instead of my tears
Wish I could close my eyes
And make you appear
Wish I could snap my fingers
Back to the time when you were mine
And I wish that hocus-pocus
Could change your goodbye
(oh, yeah, oh)

Well you're in control and I know it 'cause I'm miserable again
I don't understand how any of this makes me a better man
You know I always run to You for some help with my life
You know I always come to You for a little wise advice
And all I get is pain
Okay, so I'm exaggerating,
I'm just saying that's how it seems to me
If all good things come to an end, then what about the bad?
Am I cursed to never see the fruits of the life I wish I had?
And can I try, one more time, to be pleasing to You?
My futile efforts never seem to make my wish come true
What can I do?
I'll follow through with all these claims I never cease to make
A promise to myself is one I promise to break
But when I have You by my side then I can do what's right
I'll become the co-pilot and You control this flight
Then everything will be alright
This song's for me
A reminder of how I intend my life to be
Every word I sing
Is an anthem against my own hypocrisy
Where have I landed I don't quite remember
I feel to pieces one night in December
Pictures in boxes remind me of something
I miss the days when our fingers were touching
Chorus:
The memories of losing you
You're like a ghost
Tracing where I said to you
I wish you would listen to get through it
Verse 2
All my decisions were just second guesses
Looking for love like a bride looks for dresses
Every mistake turned to some sort of yearning
Eyes closed
Just the other day
Tried hard, I turned and walked away
Situation always the same
Things gotta change
Broke down,
Fallen to this wicked game
We lie, anything to numb the pain
Situation always the same
It's gotta change
Sometimes pretty ain't pretty at all
You draw me in, let me fall
Can't quit it, baby,
I'm a junkie for ya
Yeah, I wish I was something
Yeah, I wish I could fly
Ooh, I need that much
Someone else's touch
Must be some kind of luxury
Tell everybody that you're free
Having fun when you're trying to stop
I'm the freak stomping in the rain (?)
It was a roll of the dice
We paid a heavy price
It was the best damn bet we should've never made
Sometimes pretty ain't pretty at all
You draw me in, let me fall
I can't quit it, baby,
I'm a junkie for ya
Yeah, I wish I was something
Yeah, I wish I could fly
Yeah, I wish I was something
Yeah, I wish I could fly
Have you ever seen the devil at night?
Oh no,
Don't you know he's the only one who lives in your mind?
Have you ever felt that pain inside?
Don't you know I'm the only one who looks through your eyes?
Have you ever seen the devil at night?
Don't you know I'm the only one who looks through your eyes?
Yeah, I wish I was something
Yeah, I wish I could fly
Yeah, I wish I was something
Yeah, I wish I could fly
Don't you know that I'm tryin to get through to you?
Don't you know that I'm tryin to get to you?
Don't you know that I try too hard?
Well, I try, I try, I try, try, try
Don't you know that I'm tryin to get through to you?
Don't you know that I'm tryin to get to you?
Don't you know that I try too hard?
Well, I try, I try, I try, try
We can try to get out the web we have around us
If you don't want me to leave
If we're tangled we'll try to get out of the web we
have around us
If you don't want me to leave
I'm only staying if you belong to me
And if theres no more suffering
We've already tried this but we were younger then
Can you push from your memory and let me begin
So we can try to get out of the web we have around us
If you don't want me to leave
I'm only staying if you belong to me
And if theres no more jealousy
It's the same old story on a different day
You think your close enough to love me
Then you change your mind
We can try to get out the web we have around us
If you don't want me to leave
If we're tangled we'll try to get out of the web we
have around us
If you don't want me to leave
Get out of here, move on
Get out of here, before i break and start thinking
happy isn't everything
I don't want nothing, no i don't want nothing
Break, start thinking happy isn't everything
I just wanna be your wish
Don't you wish
If only for a night or two
All the things I love to do
New temptations calling you
Dont I wish
That you will leave your woman arms
Capture you with all my charms
just to have my way with you
I remember as the seasons turned to fall
Wind was sitting and the leaves fell a hinting a sign
Of the near winter's ball
Chill in the air as I strolled down the back steps
Looking for a tale to tell
Then she slipped me a stare as I slid into my chair
She already knew me too well
She said, "Hello" in that beautiful voice
My reply was nowhere as sweet
She seemed impressed by the state of my mess
She laughed at the wigs on my feet
Offered me a cigarette but before I could even refuse
We were standing alone and she was chilled to the bone
She told me to sing the blues
Hey, hey now I feel alright and I just wanted to see
If I may, if I might be the king of your world tonight
So I told her of the books I'd read and details about the time
How I stole 6 dollars from a man named Jed
To turn around and pay him back 9
Quoted my favorite poem but I ended it terribly wrong
She said, "I understand" and then she clapped both her hands
And said "That's my favorite song"
Hey hey now I feel alright and I just wanted to see
If I may, if I might be the king of your world tonight
If I may, if I might be the king of your world tonight
Just then a man walked in and took her away
She said her sweet goodbye and I'll see you again one day
So it was over and I was standing right here all alone
And I said to myself as I dusted my shelf
This time I think it was love
Hey, hey now I feel alright and I just wanted to see
If I may, if I might be the king of your world tonight
Hey hey now I feel alright and I just wanted to see
If I may, if I might be the king of your world tonight
The stars and me were speaking,
They told me you were leaving.
If jupiter is moving,
Then maybe you should stay.
Heaven doesn't know me,
As much as you have shown me.
Your happiness is happy,
My envy is in rage.
Turn low the radio.
Silence resume again.
Fly high the brightest light.
Don't let me put you out.
Green eyes on a blue-eyed child.
Please can you stay (a while).
Maybe i'll wait, until my thoughts about you change,
I love the look in your eyes
When you're looking at me
Love the way your cheek brushes against mine
In the disco when it's loud
And you're whispering something in my ear
Love the way you do your hair
Love the way you make me stare
When you're moving through the crowd
And everyone is grey
But you are white
Oh if I could have you
Only for a while
Oh if I could have you
Original sin - I know what you like
And sinners ain't got nothin' on you
Personify their dreams & pacify the schemers
Welcome into the race
You got the mind for miracles
You got a smile to charm the dead
And you can always score with your 57' ford
But you can't get that wish out of your head
Start me up - Cos you know what I like
I like the way you makin' me laugh
I like the magic tricks and all the things you fix
Even when they ain't been broke
I like all your freakin' havoc
I like your dog that ain't been fed
I like your messed up face and your 67' case
But I can't get this wish out of my head
I don't know if it's the way you talk
That's drivin' me outta my mind
You gotta certain style - The way you walk that mile
Y'know I'm down with that
But have you ever even noticed
Or heard a single word I said
When your only friend left you with nothin' in the end
Cos we all want these wishes in our head
I don't want to draw the line
For just a moment
I wish I could have been there
To see Your first step, hear Your very first word
Tell me, did You ever fall and scrape Your knee?
Did You know Your wounds would one day heal the world?
For just one moment
I wish I could have seen You growing
Learning the ways of a carpenter's son
Just a little boy gazing at the stars
Did You remember creating every one?
If you passed by, would I have seen a child or a King?
Would I have known?
I wish I could have been there
My only wish is to see You, face to face
Wish I could have been there
Just to see You, Jesus, face to face
For just a moment
I wish I could have been there
When You left Your footprints upon the waves
To walk along beside You and never look away
Just Your whisper and the wind and sea obey
To see You feed the people
To feel Your healing in Your touch
I wish I could have been there
My only wish is to see You, face to face
Wish I could have been there
Just to see You, Jesus, face to face
To hear you pray in the garden alone
Laying down Your will with each tear
To see You walk that lonely road
Willing to die for me
And in that moment
I know I should have been there
You took my cross and gave Your life
And you live again, oh
And You live again!
Wish I could have been there
My only wish is to see You rise again
Wish I could have been there
My only wish is to see You, Jesus, face to face
Someday I'll be there, I'm gonna be there
I'll see Your face, Your mercy, Your grace
Someday, someday
I'm going to see You, Jesus
This is the first day of my last days
I built it up now I take it apart
Climbed up real high now fall down real far
No need for me to stay
The last thing left I just threw it away
I put my faith in God and my trust in you
Now there's nothing more fucked up I could do
Wish there was something real
Wish there was something true
Wish there was something real
In this world full of you
I'm the one without a soul
I'm the one with this big fucking hole
No new tale to tell twenty-six years
On my way to hell
Gotta listen to your big time hard line bad luck fist fuck
Don't think you're having all the fun
A wish of peace
Or is that too much to ask
Clear my mind from anger
Can't throw away this masque
A wish of harmony
Or hate is the first priority
A shrouded reality
No vision no dream
A world of hate and disharmony
Wish
Wish, my own abide is what I wish
Wish, it's I for I and I know it's selfish
Wish, my life in a dream is what I wish
[Instrumental]
The leaves were falling early, the year fortune looked away
Gold and green looked brighter then, gold seems grey today
The hands of the clock never went my way, nothing ever did
So in the arms of indifference is where I'm going to stay
Set the burning sails (horizon)
Time weighs more than gold (a heartbeat)
More than shoulders can bear
All the years aflame (we're yearning)
Burnmarks never fade (though we are)
Going nowhere fast
Have I lost you for the first time, it won't be the last
For I'll lose you everytime my dreams fall apart, to dust
I may have questions, I may have answers but I sure don't have you
No one shakes an empty hand, let alone embrace the man
Set the burning sails (horizon)
Time weighs more than gold (a heartbeat)
More than shoulders can bear
All the years aflame (we're yearning)
Burnmarks never fade (though we are)
Going nowhere fast
Never walk away
Never turn your back on me
Never walk out on me
Set the burning sails
Time weighs more than gold
More than shoulders can bear
All the years aflame
Burnmarks never fade
Going nowhere fast
Breathing barely audible while I watch you fighting sleep
But somewhere in the empty land, wolves among the sheep
And all the promises I've ever made seem to break at first touch
But that was then and all we've had is shattered for ever
Never walk away
Never turn your back on me
And I was so much younger then, there where the young men were
I had it all and more... so much more...
Until the clouds came in
And I watched from a distance how they touched the shore
Of my island, of the laughing sea
I saw them climb my walls and I was frightened
And I gained nothing besides the rain...
Write my name in dust, write my name in heaven
Alas the sun always shines too late
Write my name in dust, write my name in heaven
Alas the sun always shines too late
Where have all the poets gone since the clouds have stayed
I had it all...
Now that the summer's gone
Will they stay with me, will you stay with me
Through times and lives and rain and shine
We'll meet again, like we have met before
Maybe I'm wrong but all seemed better
Yesterday, yesterday, yesterday, jesters day
Echoeing through an empty world
And I gained nothing besides the rain...
Our dreams mean nothing once you're not here
I swear I'll never dream again without you to stop the rain
Like circles in the water I know you'll be a wave once you'll reach the shore
And I promise I will try to catch you there, please stop the rain
If I could give the world, you know I would, just to see you one more time
So many stars were out there but none of them did fall
I guess none wanted to carry the burden of it all
A time to cry, so much time to cry, little time to say goodbye
And I would tell you I'll be brave and you'd know that it's a lie
And the days'll turn weeks and the weeks'll turn years and I'll know that you were wrong
There's nothing at the rainbows end but just another song
So close and yet so far away is the mask she wears today
It seems the open hand is closing, some things shell never give away
Thelena, wear the crown of golden thorns
Thelena, nail your hands onto your kite
No spotlight on your self-made cross but your eyes come shining through
Is desire just temptation or do angels long too?
Don't need wings to be an angel, just the wind to pull you up
No strings, no wings, no songs to sing as we dance into the sun
Thelena, wear the crown of golden thorns
Drifting over fields of gold, I'm a monument or at least that old
The sun never shines on me, I'm a shadow myself and for others I might be
Catch your stare before you turn your head from my appearance, but I saw you stare
Afraid to see my face, afraid to see yourself reflected in my button-eyes
In a field of straws I pick the shortest ones
Harvest desire
Beside the lamenting wind nothing ever moves me, we kiss without breath
In the midst of a tight embrace, recall the famous phrase: "You too, my son?"
Eye for an eye, a stake for a spine, I'm the mirror that stands before you
Birds come picking at your eyes, come picking at your smile, just to remind you
The world ain't a pretty sight
In a field of straws I pick the shortest ones
Sowing a wish
Gazed into the sun
For far too long
Burned...
My eyes
Was I wrong to dream my dreams?
I've been holding my breath so long that I don't know how to breathe
Like an actor in a final scene, he falls down to the stage
Never convincing though as the audience stands and leaves
So no one ever sees that he never gets up again
And the curtains of the night will fall upon the sun
Bleeding with a smile, I try
To think of all the lies he swallowed
Pull the stake out of my heart
I won't forget
Never forgive
No excuse
No forgiveness
Was I wrong to believe in the virtue of man?
So blind that I never saw that the fields around me burned down to the ground
So I stand tall in a withered field once more
Rooted in the dirt, I'm bound
Yet my arms stretch to the sky where I belong
So the clock keeps ticking but I'm not moving to the sound of breaking hearts
If I stand still then I'm not noticed, together silence and me
How should it feel when the novelty is over down again, on my knees once more
Should I believe that there is hope for us anyway but I don't know, I never did know
Here we stand on the verge of falling, two alike but never the same
Spinning down like the wheel that's turning round again without an end
I believe in a true introspection and I believe in living a lie
I've been caged and the cage is burning, the key is neatly tucked away
Superstition, I keep learning, all my trust went up in smoke
Sometimes when the world stops turning I know that I'm a world too soon
Driven like the rain that's falling, down again, on our souls once more
All these years I've been searching for shelter to save me from these gathering storms
The clock's still ticking, time comes crawling, the sound of my solitudes metronome
But it's always better than breaking hearts and to find out that you're the one to blame
Still we dance in the house of the dreamer fire's eating the walls away
But one glance at the world outside and I know that I would rather burn
Down goes the sand slipping through our hands, round go the hands of our speeding clock
But no time wasted when there's no time spent, no crystal ball to see where this all ends
From the wheels of tragedy we never had a chance, to tear it all down and start over again
Come closing in when you start closing down. I know you are, it's all coming round
You closed the door while I kept it open, slammed in the face like a 2-by-4
Then came questions and then no answers, if I only could I would open the door again
No words to keep our worlds together, we were always more strangers than dreamers
Snakes come crawling through the sand, you don't see them from where I stand
But you'll hear them speak, two tongues
Like tears their words fall down, it you lay your ear down to the ground
You'll hear them touch the floor
Their voices never silence, they'll stay with me until the end
Forever, forever and again... and again
Wastelands, deserts, I've seen it all, where the dead seeds of our dreams will fall
In love, in time, elsewhen
Masked faces and masquerades, nothing is new and all's facade
Wear the darkest face, hide in shades
I've seen the angels and talked to some, I've met the demons and walked with them
I have yet to see the truth
Tell me where your desert lies, where your inspiration and imagination dies
I know that you can show me, everyone can
Some things change and many don't, some may try and others won't
They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions
I've seen too many days turn night, ghosts mean more than man alive
Because no one gets out of here alive
I've seen it all too many times, shut the door while it's open wide
No one reaches out for more once they've touched the end
Embraced the end, once they've seen the end
Through wavelenghts, frequencies, I know you're there, zero's and one s through stars transmitting
In sleep, in your nightmare and in your dreams
Call me a devil and count me down, call me a saint and kiss my walking ground
But I still don't think that you know who I am
'Cause I've slept with angels and walked away danced with the devil and did the same
Because I still haven't seen the difference in their game
So close and far
So soft and hard
Why don't you tell me what's your game, elsewhen on a higher plane
The trail of the snake will lead us to another century or more
A crown upon it's head and poison in it's tongue
W ill make you hear the end
Two yards thick and seven miles long, I'll be your king if you unlock the door
In love, in time, elsewhen
Call me a devil and call me a saint, call me every thing that you want me to be
In sleep, in your nightmares and in your dreams
The fires in the engines burn again, try to solve the riddles that come put of them
It's been dark for hours now but still here I stand
At the bottom of a grey wide river
Somewhere, nowhere, neverland
And I just saw a brave new world for the first time I was born
The young god is bleeding colours while he's waiting for the dawn
Go see the river runs wild again
So wild now the damage is done
Please take me to the riverside
Someone, no one, anyone
And I just live in memories, I'm the burden in your eyes
It's the freedom that still brings you down but eventually it dies...
Don't want you to follow me whenever I may follow on
'Cause I will wear my golden wings and I'll crash into the sun
Someone has been here before, took my heart and walked away
So I can't feel I'm growing cold
Sometime, someday, anyday
I've done time in isolation, silence is a king to me
And in this kingdom only strangers remind me how I used to be
Don't want you to follow me whenever I may follow on
'Cause I will wear my golden wings and I...
I saw the sun burn...
I saw the tide turn...
I saw the whole world speechless, odd to me
Like numbness wrapped it's arms around me
Talking to myself I see how words will always disagree with me
There's a star in the sky tonight
and it trembles like my heart
And in this world, we're all alone tonight,
so close and yet so far.
My heart would never lie
I can feel you want me too (I can feel you want me too)
And if that star should fall,
then baby, here's what we should do
Wish, take me by the hand and wish
Hold your breath and we may find
it might come true on this starry, starry night
Wish, look into my eyes and wish
Reach out for that dream it's there
for me and you and we might fall in love again.
Mayroong (mayroong) kaba sa 'king dibdib
ito nga kaya'y pag-ibig?
Huwag mo nang labanan pa
Tunay mong damdamin
'Di na maitatagong
Ikaw ay mahal ko rin (ikaw ay mahal ko rin)
Kung panaginip man, sana ay huwag nang magising
Wish... Sana bawat bukas ay
lagi kong kasama ang pag-ibig mo--Dito sa puso ko
Wish... Sana bawat sandali
ay maging walang hanggan
Awakened this dying season such a beauty to behold
Oh autumn hath arrived a tragedy painted dead
Fallen am I without thee I am lost
In a region of doleful shades I am withering away
I dwell in the shadows of life
A dismal state of mind I'm in pain
Oh sun I hate thy beams
Leave me here to sleep and dream
In the midst of falling leaves
In a garden of endless grief
I yearn for thee my precious one
Beneath a pale grey sky I dream of your embrace
How I wish I had yo near in this oh so dolorous life
Where dreams turn to dust I have lost all my hope
Of lasting pain and unpresent bliss
This soul of mine I welcome thee
Eternal sleep
Silent advent of white death
I feel so cold
Silent advent of white death
I feel so cold
Crystallized tears falling still
Oh autumn hath died
Enshrouded am I in thy mist of endless gloom
Enthralled am I by thy beauty
How I wish how I wish
In the midst of falling snow
In a garden of endless grief
My forlorn soul of misery
Where peace and rest can never dwell
Hope never comes
I see no point in going on
Still I dream but now I know
I dream a lie so I close my eyes and I sigh
A life of shattered dreams I can no longer bear
i see that winter has come early to your house and left a
frost upon your grounds i should be stretched out in the
sun but something pulls me back to now i want to raise my
muddy face want you to pull me out when i came around you
were the richest man in the world i used your name as my
password but just when i was getting used to the back of
your head you threw the race, stole the taste out of my
winning i want to trade, give you my back, and watch you
walk right out i want to fade, take back the past, and
turn it inside out who am i to question fate but only
fatalists settle and i won't sit here idly by and watch
you idle we're supposed to vanish in time but i've been
blinking to keep you in focus if it's my turn to shine i
I wish that we could be alone.I wish that we could be
alone.
Just the two of us.
'Cause baby, I just turn me on.
Baby, I just turn me on
When you turn me on,
When you turn me on.
Well who wouldn't wanna be the lucky little girl?
And watch me smoke this cigarette
And watch me set this world on fire.
Well I'll see you later.
Well I'll see you later.
Don't forget your friend and don't forget to say hello.
I only came to say 'Hello,'
Like I didn't know.
I wish that I could take you home.
(Take me home.)
(Take me home.)
I wish that I could take you home.
(Take me home.)
(Take me home.)
But I didn't know
What I didn't know.
Would you wanna be the lucky little girl
That watched me smoke the cigarette
And watched me set this world on fire.
Well I'll see you later.
When I see you later.
Don't forget your friend and don't forget to say hello.
Hello.
Hello.
Hello.
When I see you later,
When I see you later,
When I see you later,
When I see you later,
When I see you here again,
You'll dump your boyfriend,
You'll have your way with me.
You'll say you love me.
Don't try to take this too far.
I'll have you brought up on charges.
Don't try to take this too far.
I'll have you brought up on charges.
Don't try to take this too far.
I'll have you brought up on charges.
I'll drag your worthless name all over this whole damn
town.
Don't try to take this too far.
I'll have you brought up on charges.
Don't try to take this too far.
I'll have you brought up on charges.
I'll drag your worthless name all over this whole damn
town.
Don't try to take this too far.
I'll have you brought up on charges.
Don't try to take this too far.
I'll have you brought up on charges.
Don't try to take this too far.
These days hope rides an empty shell
And I know this feeling only too well
If a word could have changed where I am now
Then I'd wish if it were
Dreams hang in frailty
And glimmer out of reach
The threads of imagination
Thinner than air
I'll be happy when I am
WISH I COULD BE LIKE JESUS MORE
INSTEAD OF ALWAYS GETTING SORE
WISH I CONTROLLED MY DESTINY
INSTEAD OF IT CONTROLLING ME
WISH I COULD TAME THE SAVAGE BEAST
WISH I COULD TAME MYSELF AT LEAST
THEN I COULD TAME THE OTHER GUYS
THEN I COULD CHANGE THE WORLD
BUT I CAN’T CHANGE
WHAT I DON’T UNDERSTAND
I CAN ONLY REACT TO A LINE IN THE SAND
SO I RANT AND I RAVE
TILL I THINK THAT I’M BRAVE
BUT NOTHING GETS DONE IN THE END
WISH I COULD SAIL OUT TO THE BRINK
AND NEVER FEAR WHAT PEOPLE THINK
WISH I COULD MAKE MY LIFE'S DESIGN
AND KNOW THAT IT WAS TRULY MINE
WISH I COULD TRUST MY COMPASS MORE
NOT BE AFRAID TO LEAVE THE SHORE
FOR ALL MY CASTLES ON THE SAND
WASH OUT TO SEA IN TIME
WHY SHOULD I CARE
IF NO ONE WRITES ON MY GRAVE
HERE LIES A PERSON WHO ALWAYS BEHAVED
'CAUSE NO ONE IS SAVED
BY NOT MAKING WAVES
DESPITE HOW WE TRY TO PRETEND
AND THE SPIRIT SAYS
COME, TAKE MY HAND
I WILL MAKE YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE
COME, TAKE MY HAND
IN THE MORNING I WILL TAKE THE
TIDE WITH YOU
WISH I COULD BE 16 AGAIN
AND KNOW WHAT I KNOW NOW BACK THEN
I WONDER WHAT MY LIFE WOULD BE
IF I COULD’VE DONE THINGS DIFFERENTLY
BUT THAT WAS THEN AND THIS IS NOW
I’LL HAVE TO GET ALONG SOMEHOW
WITH WHAT THE WORLD HAS GIVEN ME
INSTEAD OF WASTING TIME
‘CAUSE I CAN’T CHANGE
IF I NEVER BEGIN
AIN’T NO USE IN ME WORRYING ‘BOUT
WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN
SO I LEARN AS I GO
‘CAUSE YOU JUST NEVER KNOW
WHAT’S WAITING FOR YOU
‘ROUND THE BEND
COME, TAKE MY HAND
WE WILL MAKE OUR DREAMS COME TRUE
COME, TAKE MY HAND
WHEN YOU SEE YOURSELF IN SOMEONE
AND THEY SEE THEMSELVES IN YOU
AND YOU CHASE YOUR DREAMS TOGETHER
Since I have received your letter, every efort, every
word
Is no more a mean, it’s just an aim, I’m waiting
Impacient for your call.
I can’t hold myself, I’m no start, I’m no end…
But don’t yet knock at my door, I’ve been waiting so
Long but something has changed, I think I can control
Myself,
I can control myself.
My last wish for individuals, I hope that I’m not
Pointing too far,
Take control back on your own, raise united, dream
Together, don’t you ever be divided!!
I can’t hold myself, I’m no start, I’m no end…
I’ve been waiting so long, don’t knock at my door ‘cuz
Something has changed I feel I can control myself
I can control myself.
We must control ourselves.
Every smole has turned into a frown /
Every green has faded into brown /
Every peace has turnes into a fight /
Every day has turned into a night /
And the world, once colourful and free, is caving in and all comes down
on me /
so why should I keep going on? /
Still words remain unspoken, feelings left unfelt /
So I take this token and throw it in the wishing well /
I wish I could come clean again /
I wish I could recall the time when everything was all right /
Every time I laugh every time I smile, telling everybody that I feel fine, it´s
a lie /
Every love always had to go /
Every friend has turned into a foe /
And the world is empty all around, for I see the things I gaven´t found /
So why should I be hopeful now?! /
Can I free my mind from all I´ve left behind /
Loves of every kind and still it seems as though I´m blind /
