Take a wicked trip to the dark side with director Joe Dante (Gremlins, The Howling) as he explores the twisted secrets of American suburbia in the outrageous cult comedy The 'Burbs.
Ray Peterson (Academy Award® winner Tom Hanks, Forrest Gump, Castaway) is currently a man of leisure. But his is not the holiday away from home that normal folk take - no far off lands, tropical islands or caravan parks. To the disappointment of wife Carol (Carrie Fisher, Star Wars Episodes IV-VI), Ray decides to spend a relaxing week at home in his slippers and dressing gown, but soon finds himself embroiled in a suburban conspiracy of the most bizarre order. Teaming up with nosy neighbour Art (Ric Ducommun, Groundhog Day), old-school ex-soldier Mark (Academy Award® nominee Bruce Dern, Nebraska) and laid-back teenager Ricky (Corey Feldman, The Goonies), Ray becomes the unlikely leader of a clandestine operation to investigate the background of their mysterious new neighbours the Klopeks.
Convinced there is more to the Klopeks than meets the eye - Ray and his band of bumbling brothers manage to turn the otherwise quiet cul de sac upside-down in the process - watch out pizza dude, there goes the neighbourhood!

The 'Burbs
The 'Burbs is a 1989 American black comedy film directed by Joe Dante starring Tom Hanks, Bruce Dern, Carrie Fisher, Rick Ducommun, Corey Feldman, Wendy Schaal and Henry Gibson. The film was written by Dana Olsen, who also has a cameo in the movie. The film pokes fun at suburban environments and their eccentric dwellers.
Plot
On Mayfield Place, a quiet cul-de-sac in the fictional suburban town of Hinkley Hills, Ray Peterson (Tom Hanks) is trying to learn more about his mysterious new next-door neighbors, the Klopeks. Art Weingartner (Rick Ducommun), the Petersons' other next-door neighbor, believes the Klopeks are murderers.
One evening, Ray, Art, and veteran Lt. Mark Rumsfield (Bruce Dern) watch Hans Klopek (Courtney Gains) drive his dilapidated car from the garage to the curb, then carry a large, heavy garbage bag from the trunk, place it in his garbage can and bang it repeatedly with a garden hoe. During the night, Ray watches the Klopeks digging in their back yard with pick-axes in a rainstorm. The following morning, Art runs out to check the contents of the garbage truck as it is collecting the Klopeks' can. He is quickly joined by Rumsfield and Ray, but they find no human remains.

But his is not the holiday away from home that normal folk take - no far off lands, tropical islands or caravan parks. To the disappointment of wife Carol (Carrie Fisher, Star Wars Episodes IV-VI), Ray decides to spend a relaxing week at home in his slippers and dressing gown, but soon finds himself embroiled in a suburban conspiracy of the most bizarre order. Teaming up with nosy neighbour Art (Ric Ducommun, Groundhog Day), old-school ex-soldier Mark (Academy Award® nominee Bruce Dern, Nebraska) and laid-back teenager Ricky (Corey Feldman, The Goonies), Ray becomes the unlikely leader of a clandestine operation to investigate the background of their mysterious new neighbours the Klopeks.

Ward and June Cleaver have nothing on suburban couple Ray and Carol Peterson (Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher). Together with their perfect son, Ray and Carol are so clean that they squeak. Thus, when new neighbors Dr. Werner Klopek (Henry Gibson), Uncle Reuben (Brother Theodore), and Hans (Courtney Gains) begin evincing bizarre behavior, Ray is slightly put out. Carol thinks that Ray is getting all worked up over nothing. Ray and his fellow suburbanites endure all sorts of slapstick misadventures in the vain hope of getting "the goods" on the newcomers.

Trying to show my older brothers I was tough as I watched both parts of the miniseries cost me many sleepless nights and extra laundry for my mom ... “The ‘Burbs” PG ... “The ‘Burbs” is more of a comedy than it is a scary film ... Stine, the author of the Goosebumps books ... The movie is directed by Joe Dante, the same guy that directed “The ‘Burbs” and “Gremlins.” So the movie has an '80s teenager flick vibe to it, but also has some good scares....
